NC State AD Boo Corrigan inks an extension through June 2029. Chancellor Randy Woodson: "Under Boo's outstanding leadership, NC State Athletics is experiencing new levels of competitive, academic and financial success. We are fortunate to have such an experienced and well-respected leader to help us navigate through the ever-changing landscape of college athletics." Financial terms of the extension have yet to be made available. (link); CollegeAD reports Corrigan’s base salary will start at $713,125 and increase $50K each year. Additionally, Corrigan will receive $700K as part of a supplemental package, which will also increase by $50K each year. He is also eligible to receive up to $300K in bonuses and would be owed the remaining base pay due to him for the remainder of the contract if he is let go without cause. Should Corrigan leave for another DI AD post, he would owe the university 50% of his current base salary times the number of years left on his contract. (link)

Louisiana Tech was set to begin interviewing AD candidates this week, and President Jim Henderson says: “We hope to announce the new AD the last week of February. That’s our timeline and it is very aggressive. But your timelines are flexible. Finding the right person is non-negotiable. That’s what we’re going to do.” Henderson also notes school leaders have met with constituents from on and off campus, including fans and alumni. “We had a number of conversations with fans and alumni that have an interest. And to their credit, they have said, ‘you know, I don’t want to get into the business, but kind of tell me what where we’re going and what you think.’ And, and all of them seemed to support this idea that we can compete with any like institutions.” Meanwhile, Henderson acknowledges Tech’s budget challenges may cause a slight change to the definition of success for the next AD: “If we can get an athletic director who is going to give us at least five to six years, and if they want to lead, they leave better than they found it, that’s going to be the real success. And I think most fans would be thoroughly satisfied with it.“ More. (link)

The NCAA has begun its RFP process following last month’s adoption of NIL transparency and consumer protection measures, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who notes the NCAA is now accepting bids for its agent registry, disclosure database and education program. The deadline to submit proposals is next Friday with a decision expected by the end of March. Nakos adds: “The registration of NIL service providers will include agents, financial advisors and others who support college athletes in NIL arrangements. Completely voluntarily, information sent to the NCAA would be published in a registry for athletes to access. In the registry, athletes could review their experiences with those service providers. In a previous statement, the DI council said it would be similar to a ‘rate my professor’ platform. (link)

Western Carolina AD/Women’s Basketball Selection Committee member Alex Gary joins Southern Conference Assoc. Commissioner for Brand Strategy and Broadcast Dave Friedman to discuss the latest updates from the committee’s meetings. Gary explains the process of selecting officials for the tournament has left him confident in the those who are chosen: “Officials are evaluated, they’re graded, they try to eliminate any sort of conflicts when it comes to officials going to certain schools and officiating those games and being from certain areas and officiating those games. There's a lot that goes into it, so I was really happy to see all of the oversight associated with officiating.” Asked what teams and leagues can do to differentiate themselves from one another once conference play starts, Gary says: “You’ve certainly got to win games, but also it’s how you win. I know when we were evaluating a couple of teams for top 16 consideration, when you look at how they're winning the games, it’s not just that they’re winning games, but they're beating teams by double digits repeatedly. They’re winning games on the road, they're winning games at home. I think that how you look and that eye test that we talked about a little bit in our last conversation is extremely important.” Full interview. (link)

During its February 12 meeting, the Committee for Legislative Relief reviewed the previously approved waiver for postgraduate transfer participation and removed the limitation only allowing it to be used once by a postgraduate transfer student-athlete. The committee also removed the required written statement from the previous institution, explaining that the “removal of the written statement from the previous institution does not remove the previously approved waiver requirement that a student-athlete must have left the previous institution in good standing (i.e., not under disciplinary suspension). The committee noted that this information is available on the transfer tracer, therefore, a written statement from the previous institution is not necessary.” Also, the committee received an update on the use of the previously approved waiver checklist for official visit transportation expenses to a prospective student-athlete’s siblings. The committee amended the previously approved waiver checklist to encompass all official visit expenses (i.e., transportation, meals, lodging, entertainment) to a prospective student-athlete’s parents, legal guardians and legal minor aged siblings (i.e., under 18 years old). A bill in Oregon that would prohibit the NCAA, conferences and any other athletics governing body from punishing an athlete or school for violating NIL rules is headed to the House floor. The bill also provides liability protection for universities and their employees “for any damages to a student athlete’s ability to exercise the student athlete’s (NIL) rights due to any decision or action” by the school or any of its employees that is “routinely taken in the course of intercollegiate sports” or is “part of identifying, facilitating, enabling or supporting opportunities for the current student athlete to exercise the student athlete’s” NIL rights at the school. Representative Zach Hudson (D-Troutdale) offers a hypothetical scenario: “Let’s say a student is making money off of [an NIL] deal. Let’s say that student has some accusation against them and the college kicks them off a team — let’s say for a weapons charge or something. It turns out that that charge was false. It turns out that the college should have known it was false and didn’t do their due diligence to make sure it was a legitimate complaint. But the student has still lost tens of thousands of dollars from the actions of the college. If the student were to sue the college for what they did in that scenario, would a judge dismiss that case based on what’s in the bill?” That scenario will likely be the subject of debate on the House floor. Oregon, Oregon State, Portland and several other universities in the state have voiced support for the bill. (link)

Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint reports Fox will develop the platform and tech for the new sports streamer, which “will be based on News Corp.'s Australian sports platform Kayo Sports. (link); Hulu Sports has made the short list of possible names for the ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports super streamer, and The Desk’s Matthew Keys notes the Hulu Sports name is favored because “executives feel the Hulu brand name is already familiar with consumers who have ditched cable and satellite for streaming services.” Awful Announcing’s Joe Lucia adds: “The joint venture existing as Hulu Sports also could allow for an easy tiered experience in the Hulu app. You could go with the streaming option with no live content, Hulu Sports with all the sports content (and maybe library content outside of ESPN+?), or Hulu Live TV, with everything in the previous two tiers. Hulu also lets you tack additional subscriptions onto your plan, which could allow for easier bundling with Disney+ or Max. I’m also curious if using the Hulu Sports brand could hold off attention from federal regulators. Instead of being a whole new brand, the joint venture could be looked at as a new tier of an existing brand.” (link)

Paramount Global and Comcast have engaged in recent talks about “joining forces in streaming through a partnership or joint venture, among several potential strategic options the entertainment company is pursuing, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Amol Sharma, who add: “A weaker-than-expected ad market and continued declines in pay-TV subscribers have pushed Paramount to aggressively cut costs to meet its promise to investors that it will deliver positive earnings growth in 2024. This week, the company cut around 800 jobs, or 3% of its workforce. … Bringing the two streaming apps under one roof could produce significant cost savings—from spending on programming to marketing—and create a more in-depth offering for consumers, especially with regard to live sports. A commercial partnership or joint venture are among the arrangements the companies could pursue.” (link)

Congratulations to Iowa women’s basketball student-athlete Caitlin Clark on setting the NCAA women’s basketball all-time scoring record. Here’s the shot (from the logo, of course) that broke the record (link) and the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd hitting 116 decibels in celebration. (link); Clark: “I’m just thankful more than anything else. I will just be proud, proud of the way I worked for this more than anything.” The Athletic’s Ben Pickman notes that “although Clark has now set the NCAA record, she has yet to break Lynette Woodard’s women’s college basketball career scoring record of 3,649 points, set at Kansas in 1981 in the AIAW era. If Clark maintains her current scoring average, of 32.1 points per game, she’ll likely pass Woodard by the start of the Big Ten tournament in early March. Though it wouldn’t appear in the record book, Clark could pass Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA scoring record — men’s or women’s — of 3,667 points before the season ends.” (link); Vivid Seats saw a 68% jump in the overnight listed ticket price for last night’s game, per Sportico, which notes the average sold ticket price for the game was $270 as of Thursday. “This game was the best-selling women’s basketball ticket ever on StubHub.” (link)

ESPN could pull its six-year, $7.8B deal with the College Football Playoff if the “CFP organizational body doesn’t get its act together,” according to Puck’s John Ourand, who cites the ongoing uncertainty with the Pac-12 and Washington State and Oregon State, the SEC and Big Ten “continually levitating above the NCAA to become their own veritable semiprofessional leagues” and other issues that ESPN wants to see resolved. “The playoff committee needs to figure out how to placate the conferences, ensure that the larger format is more inclusive, and allow everyone (the conferences, the schools, and their broadcast partner, chief among them) to make enough money so that they play nice—at least for now. Nothing happens quickly in college athletics, but the committee better not assume that ESPN will wait around. I’m hearing that the network will not only be spending a lot more on NBA rights, but also that its executives have prioritized maintaining UFC rights, too. … [ESPN Chairman] Jimmy Pitaro is also looking at MLB rights. All in all, that’s a lot of cash outlay, and the CFP would be wise to accept the deal quickly while it has a bird in hand.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham has commissioned a working group to explore potential renovation options to the Smith Center as well as the possibility of building a new arena, according to Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes. Cunningham says that UNC is constricted by the Smith Center site due to significant rock on the west side of the facility and the expense involved with addressing that issue is why the arena does not have two concourses encircling the court. In a recent interview, Cunningham noted that “we actually had a plan 10 years ago that we could have acted upon, and we didn't. This is, quite frankly, another iteration of looking at our future and saying, 'Okay, where are we today? Where do we think we need to be in the future? And what's the best path to get there?' And that includes a basketball study. The other night, we had 21,000 people with a single concourse. It was a great atmosphere, but some of the amenities and services that you'd like to provide an elite program, we just can't do that right now, because of the facility that we have. So how can we continue to make sure that we remain elite?” There is currently no timetable for the group’s work. (link)

Former Manhattan AD Marianne Reilly has accepted the AD post at Cardinal Spellman High School and says of the transition: "It's just a different vibe, it really is, it's all about the student athletes, to be at the high school level, it's really nice to just refocus about what's important about athletics." Reilly also says an investigation that found multiple Jaspers student-athletes who were ruled ineligible just after her departure in June was due to diminished staff. Specifically, Reilly contends almost everyone either quit or wanted to work remotely after COVID, leaving her to rebuild the staff. Reilly adds that she only had one other staff member with her running the department, and nobody was in charge of compliance. “I say, well we could have tried this, or we could have done that, but I went into Manhattan College saying I will always run a program with integrity, class and character, and I feel that I did." Nike will lay off 2% of its workforce, according to CEO John Donahoe, who explained in an email to employees that the layoffs will not impact the company’s stores, distribution centers, or U.S. manufacturing facilities. The Oregonian’s Matthew Kish notes that means the roughly 1,500 lost jobs “could have an outsized impact at the company’s roughly 400-acre headquarters campus near Beaverton, where it employed 11,400 last spring.” Layoffs will begin this morning and continue through next week. Donahoe: “This is a painful reality and not one that I take lightly. We are not currently performing at our best, and I ultimately hold myself and my leadership team accountable.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Fischer reports the NFL “would effectively have veto rights over the sale of On Location Experiences” if Silver Lake takes Endeavor private.” One expert tells Fischer it’s “unthinkable” that the NFL doesn’t have a change-in-control provision in the license, given the importance of controlling the Super Bowl experience. Fischer adds: “The league could both steer a deal to its preferred buyer and profit through a renegotiation of its long-term license of Super Bowl tickets, the hospitality company’s most important asset. … At one point, the NFL held a large minority stake in the hospitality company it founded, but in 2022, it converted that 32% stake to a 1.5% stake in Endeavor. It still has huge sway through the ticket license, making any sale a tripartite negotiation.” (link)

Amid talk about his future in Stillwater, Oklahoma State Men’s Basketball HC Mike Boynton tells the Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten: “They can hire Billy Donovan or Phil Jackson or the coach at Langston or whoever, but OSU success in the Big 12 will be difficult unless the program strengthens its commitment to NIL. I’m coming up on the end of my seventh season as the head coach. What have you heard about (the possibility) of any significant upgrades for the men’s basketball program in seven years?” Asked how many Big 12 schools are sufficiently committed to NIL, Boynton says: “Without naming specific schools, I’ll tell you what I know. There are at least six programs operating above $2M (on 2023-24 NIL resources) for their roster. There are three or four others that operate between $1M and $2M, and we are last. We’re barely over $500K in total expenses (committed to basketball athletes). … Tyreek Smith did not want to leave Oklahoma State. He came in my office three times and asked what we could do for him. He went to SMU. We can’t beat SMU to keep our player? Two years in a row, TCU took one of our best players (Rondel Walker and Avery Anderson).” More from Boynton. (link)

More from Boynton, who says recruiting has “never been a challenge until recruiting became not recruiting anymore. What I did to get Cade Cunningham here was way more difficult than what it takes to get players on campus now.” Boynton explains he recruited Cunningham by making sure he was in front of him more than other coaches and building a relationship. “I can’t work that hard anymore. Not when you can say here’s $500K to come spend nine months over here. ‘I like you, Coach, but I might get hurt this year, and all you’ve got is a scholarship for me, and I’ve still got to give those books back at the end of the year.” (link)
