NCAA President Charlie Baker tells ESPN’s Dan Murphy he is not in favor of rules or federal laws that would place new limits on student-athletes' ability to transfer: "I've had conversations with a bunch of coaches who didn't…walk out on their contracts. One of the things I hear from kids when I talk to them about this issue is, 'Coaches walk out on their contracts. What about us?'" Baker goes on to point out the rate at which student-athletes transfer is actually less than their non-athlete peers. “Kids just transfer more because they have more information, more data, and they're more impatient about a lot of things." Baker also says that regardless of the outcome of antitrust cases, the NCAA will continue to ask Congress for help. "If we don't get it done this year, [we'll] certainly have more examples about why it would be important to take on preemption and compensation and employment and some of these other issues in the next Congress.” (link) 

Following the installation of its new 28’x28’ $157K scoreboard at Ray Dennison Memorial Field during Football season, Fort Lewis AD Travis Whipple is excited for the videoboard to be full go. “We’re striving to have the best game environment. We’ve seen some awesome increases in fan attendance and participation, and I think elements like this just continue to take it to another level. […] Our setting is the most beautiful in all of Division II , and we really wanted to make this upgrade and innovation to our game environment. … It’s something that Fort Lewis students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans in the community will all benefit from.” Beyond FB, the board will be used for Lacrosse and more, with Whipple noting: “We’re finding that we continue to have more and more uses for such a video board on campus.” (link) 

Postseason Updates:

+ The first Men’s Basketball regional rankings have been released in alphabetical order. (link)

+ The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Rifle Championships field has been announced. Team qualifiers include defending champion Alaska Fairbanks, Air Force (DI), Kentucky (DI), Navy (DI), Nebraska (DI), Ole Miss (DI), TCU (DI) and West Virginia (DI) . Forty of the 48 competitors come from those eight teams, with the remaining eight competitors selected based on scores submitted from the designated qualifier. The championships, hosted this year by the Mountaineers, will be held March 8-9 on campus at WVU Coliseum. (link)

Following the cancellation of the rest of its Women’s Basketball season, Western Oregon has placed its WBB coaching staff – HC Jessica Peatross and AC DJ Marlow – on paid leave while an investigation is conducted. (link)

The Intercollegiate Coach Association Coalition (ICAC) has made a formal submission to Congress's Commission on the State of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Sports underscoring the need to safeguard Olympic sports amid discussions surrounding protections for the NCAA. National Wrestling Coaches Association Executive Director Mike Moyer notes the letter “suggests that any aid provided to collegiate athletics [from Congress] should be contingent upon the protection of Olympic sports through antitrust exemptions or equivalent measures." Specifically, the letter points out that “of the 626 members of Team USA that competed in the 2020 Olympics, 76% of them were current or former student-athletes from 171 different colleges or universities with 82% of the medals coming from athletes that were trained in 86 unique schools.” It adds: “Almost every attempt by the NCAA to regulate in the area of revenue and competition has been met with litigation and much of it has been successful. This has caused financial strain that threatens to bankrupt the NCAA and destroy the relatively level playing field collegiate sports have enjoyed. By the same token, conversations about a ‘football super conference’ that might exist if antitrust protections are afforded are every bit as detrimental to the Olympic sports as no relief at all. … Relatively speaking, it won’t take much of the additional revenue to keep Olympic sports alive, but it will likely mean the difference between continued success on the world stage and the relative mediocrity that plagued so many of our Olympic teams only a few decades ago.” Full letter. Southern Connecticut State opened its Student-Athlete Wellness Center with the official support of Connecticut Orthopaedics. The facility will include a student-athlete recovery space, learning space and lounge. (link) 

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a new rule allowing women's volleyball players to contact the ball more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact when the ball is played to a teammate. However, if the ball is played over the net, the double contact would be ruled a fault, and the team would lose the point. The panel also approved allowing each team to designate two liberos for each set of the match. Only one libero would be allowed on the court at a time, and the libero would be allowed to serve in one position. Other rules changes include allowing the referee to issue an administrative sanction (red card) to the home team in instances where spectators encroach the playing area and the host administration fails to resolve the problem; allowing interference above the net (whether an opponent was touched) to be added to the list of plays that can be challenged in video review; expanding the jewelry rule to allow small, snug-fitting nose rings and ear cuffs; and requiring all protests to be resolved during the match.
