NCAA President Charlie Baker tells ESPN’s Dan Murphy he is not in favor of rules or federal laws that would place new limits on student-athletes' ability to transfer: "I've had conversations with a bunch of coaches who didn't…walk out on their contracts. One of the things I hear from kids when I talk to them about this issue is, 'Coaches walk out on their contracts. What about us?'" Baker goes on to point out the rate at which student-athletes transfer is actually less than their non-athlete peers. “Kids just transfer more because they have more information, more data, and they're more impatient about a lot of things." Baker also says that regardless of the outcome of antitrust cases, the NCAA will continue to ask Congress for help. "If we don't get it done this year, [we'll] certainly have more examples about why it would be important to take on preemption and compensation and employment and some of these other issues in the next Congress.” (link)

Mississippi University for Women Interim AD Buddy Foster on the proposed name change to Wynbridge State University of Mississippi: “We don’t have to qualify that we’re a co-ed institution. It gets our foot in the door more for certainly male student-athletes, but also female student-athletes. Studies show only four percent of high school females want a single-gendered university experience so it opens doors to those female student-athletes as well.” Foster also notes retaining the “W” for recruiting and branding will be significant. If the legislation to change the institution’s name is passed, the change would go into effect July 1. (link)

+ Trinity (CT), Keene State, Oswego State, NYU, Widener, Hampden-Sydney and Wisconsin-Platteville remain atop their respective Men’s Basketball regions, with Case Western Reserve, WashU and Cal Lutheran moving into the top spot in their regions. (link)

The Sewanee Purple’s Smith Cochran gets perspectives from Tigers leaders about NIL in DIII. AD John Shackelford: “When I say that I received [NIL] with open arms, I don’t know that I did. I support our student-athletes… but the idea of pay-for-play is not what this is. […] If it stays within those parameters, I think it could be a healthy thing, but I would just say [the athletic department] has a very wary eye on the situation.” Men’s Basketball AC/Asst. Compliance Director Will Merrell’s role with NIL is focused on ensuring “student athletes are educated about opportunities that are available to them and how to take advantage of them without sacrificing your eligibility.” Merrell: “In Sewanee, I think this is where NIL stays. It’s a great opportunity for student athletes to make some extra money. We have plans to tie in with [the Career Center] because it’s a great networking tool for our student athletes to find internships. For Sewanee specifically, that is probably the best payout. Getting a couple brand endorsements and maybe turn that into some job opportunities.” (link)

Facility Features:

+ Skidmore’s Board of Trustees approves a $3.4M project to build a new turf baseball field with completion expected in time for the 2025 spring season. Donors will fund the bulk of the project with the rest covered by College capital reserves. (link)

+ Centre has officially opened its new Champions Hall, which includes an indoor track, fieldhouse, strength & performance center, locker room and more. (link)

Alfred State Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving HC Zach Healy chats with SwimSwam’s Riley Overend about the future of the program, which was expected to phase out after the decision to convert its pool to a basketball and volleyball space. Healy says there are discussions about using Alfred’s facilities for the 2024-25 season and potentially beyond “to help keep our program going.” The Pioneers have instituted a recruiting pause, with Healy adding: “When it comes to recruiting, we are in a situation that we can accept and bring new student athletes into our program, but are not explicitly reaching out as our future is unknown. We would love to continue keeping the program strong, but do understand with the current situation surrounding our program that potential student athletes may choose to compete elsewhere. At the very least we would love to talk with anyone interested and are very open with the current status of the team.” (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a new rule allowing women's volleyball players to contact the ball more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact when the ball is played to a teammate. However, if the ball is played over the net, the double contact would be ruled a fault, and the team would lose the point. The panel also approved allowing each team to designate two liberos for each set of the match. Only one libero would be allowed on the court at a time, and the libero would be allowed to serve in one position. Other rules changes include allowing the referee to issue an administrative sanction (red card) to the home team in instances where spectators encroach the playing area and the host administration fails to resolve the problem; allowing interference above the net (whether an opponent was touched) to be added to the list of plays that can be challenged in video review; expanding the jewelry rule to allow small, snug-fitting nose rings and ear cuffs; and requiring all protests to be resolved during the match. King’s Football HC Skyler Fultz steps down from his role after one season to pursue other opportunities, while AHC/Defensive Coordinator Mike Cebrosky is promoted to HC. AD Cheryl Ish: “Over the last 10 years [Fultz] has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our student-athletes and the College community. He truly embodies the NCAA Division III philosophy and always acts in the best interest of his players. I've always been impressed with Skyler’s ability to build positive relationships with everyone he encounters. William Smith Women’s Basketball HC Lindsay Sharman announces her intention to step away from coaching to pursue other professional opportunities after 18 seasons in charge of the program. She will remain on staff to assist with special projects through the end of the academic year. (link)
