The College Football Playoff has not agreed to a new media rights deal, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher in a memo to league administrators described reports of the CFP agreeing to or having concluded an extension of the media rights deal with ESPN as “incorrect.” From the February 13 email: “Several news outlets are reporting that a new six-year television deal has been concluded for the College Football Playoff. Be advised, these reports are incorrect. Neither the Management Committee (commissioners) nor the Board of Managers (presidents) have reviewed a draft agreement nor has any vote been taken.” Dellenger explains that under “typical protocol, the CFP Management Committee…would make a recommendation to the Board of Managers for the adoption of any CFP decisions. The Board of Managers is the highest ranking governance body of the CFP. While the CFP continues to work toward an extension with ESPN, no deal can be formally agreed to or signed because of a litany of unresolved matters related to the long-term structure of the playoff, multiple commissioners tell Yahoo Sports.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione and Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg talk with The Oklahoman’s Ryan Aber and Scott Wright about the current landscape, and Castiglione remarks: “I can't say I feel good about anything related to the structure because there isn't one. I guess you could say by default, the market has filled the void created by the lack of forward thinking in this space. It's created the most chaotic and disruptive environment in the history of college athletics, period. That is indisputable.” Weiberg, who serves on the NCAA NIL Committee, says there may be some order to the chaos coming soon: “I think you’ll see some things in April along those lines that will give the university more ability to get involved, stopping short of bringing (NIL) in house at this point, but allowing us to get more involved as an institution. I think there are advantages and disadvantages of it coming in-house, but the longer we are in it, I think the more convinced I am that it needs to come in-house.” He adds of the voluntary agent registry and standardized contracts being proposed: “It’s providing some protections for the student-athletes. They can have more education about what kinds of questions they need to be asking. The reporting (of NIL deals) is intended to start to shed some light on what is going on in this space … so there starts to be an understanding of the market. By shedding light on the market, if there’s something that seems very different from that, it allows the student-athlete, again, to ask questions about why it is so different.” (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley during last night’s All-Star Game asserted that “we’ve screwed up college sports with the NIL thing” and asked NBA Commissioner Adam Silver if he could “get together with the NCAA because, number one, the NCAA, they’re boneheads. The reason I call them boneheads is they’re always reactive. … So, what do you think we’re going to be able to do between the NIL and the G League?” Silver says he’s met several times with NCAA President Charlie Baker and notes: “For the domestic U.S. players, without a great development system – you guys didn’t just fall off the turnip truck. You guys all came up through incredible systems that developed you into NBA players. We’re seeing that internationally. I think there’s a reason why you’re seeing so many top-notch players coming into the league now so skilled. It’s not just at the college level; we’ve got to address youth basketball in this country. There’s a whole big ecosystem that we have to fix.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner answers a reader question about how events might have turned out differently if the Pac-12 had hired Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. First, he points out that now former Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff and Yormark inherited very different situations. Most notably, The Big 12 was “both devoid of schools coveted by the SEC or Big Ten and stocked with presidents and athletic directors who prioritized survival and stability over all else. … Yormark had another advantage — one of his own making: He hustled. He understood the urgency baked into the media rights negotiations; Kliavkoff never did. He understood that college sports is a relationship business; Kliavkoff never did. He realized the realignment rock fight required rocks; Kliavkoff brought a teddy bear.” More from Wilner. (link)

Missouri FAR Pam Bruzina and Tennessee FAR Don Bruce joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the industry’s most pressing topics from the FAR’s perspective. Bruce emphasizes the importance of understanding the “academic performance of our transfers is a function not just of what happens after they transfer, but also what was going on before they transferred. You think about it, you get to the point where you're transferring universities or colleges, you've gone through something that didn't go well, and maybe it's to the point of crisis or trauma. In many cases transfers are absolutely necessary and in everyone's best interest. We have to resist the temptation to think of this as free agency and people are just moving around to maximize athletic opportunities – sure, that happens, but there's a lot more to it. … Let's be careful to rush to judgment. Let's really be careful about looking at the data and understanding there's a lot going on for these students even before they click yes on that transfer portal.” Full interview on ADU. (link)

Former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski last week criticized Ohio State’s decision to part ways with MBB HC Chris Holtmann: "After three years at Duke, I'd be fired. Part of building a culture is going through adversity. We were fortunate to be allowed to do that. Our schools were fortunate because we were allowed to build a culture. Our culture is still there at Duke. That's what you want to keep going." Coach K’s comments came on his SiriusXM radio show, where former Villanova MBB HC Jay Wright was a guest and added: "This situation with Chris Holtmann, we've got to win now. It's almost like everybody is a junior college coach now. … They might not be patient with us. That's why I brought up Holtmann; 70% of Ohio State's points come from freshmen and sophomores. If those guys stay, whoever gets that job next year is going to have a hell of a team. No one is waiting on those young teams anymore. It's so different." (link)

College football coaching is not “nearing an apocalypse,” according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken, who contends the profession is simply evolving the same way others do. “Just like the journalist, the computer programmer, the airline pilot or the dentist, few people leave an industry doing the same job the same way they did at the beginning of their careers. Most of us can relate to the idea that change in the workplace is hard, and not always for the better.” The two biggest departures from the sport this offseason – former Alabama HC Nick Saban and former Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh – that are often cited as a sign of the coming coachpocalypse, are easily explained away by other factors: “Saban is 72 years old with seven national championships and more money than he could ever spend. His eventual retirement has been a major topic for nearly a decade. It’s completely normal for him to call it a career at this stage.” Harbaugh, meanwhile, stayed longer in Ann Arbor than anywhere else in his coaching career and is leaving after delivering a national championship to his alma mater. “Now he’ll try to add a Super Bowl, a goal he's never been shy about.” The reality, Wolken posits, is there’s never been a better time to be a college football coach. “Guys at the top end of the sport are making $10M per year on guaranteed contracts that are running for seven or eight years.” Yes, Wolken acknowledges, changes in the system are making coaches’ jobs harder, “the same way disruptions in every other industry have made people's jobs more complicated. Welcome to the real world.” (link)

ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski has committed $50K to the St. Bonaventure-focused Team Unfurl collective. In a video released yesterday, Woj added: “We’re going to match another $50K if you’ll subscribe, if you’ll give. We have a chance here to raise $150K before the end of this basketball season. St. Bonaventure, once again, one of the elite mid-major programs in this country. We have a chance to keep coach [Mark] Schmidt and this team and university competitive with anybody in the country.” (link)

CNBC’s Alex Sherman joins The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch Sports Media podcast and says he believes ESPN is “quite content for their DTC product not to be a monster as long as the cable bundle survives. So, I think what they’re hoping is that whatever that number may be, 45M, 50M American households will just continue to subscribe to cable. The amount of people canceling cable will at some point plateau and flatten out. That product will not go to zero like some people think, and we will not just evolve into a full streaming universe – and/or there will be some sort of streaming bundle that doesn't exist today where ESPN’s direct to consumer service will be in effect bundled with Max and Netflix and whatever other streaming service exists in a couple years from now. And that will replace the cable bundle, and the economics will be something that resembles the cable bundle today so it's sort of an equal switch for ESPN.” Sherman and Deitsch also talk about the value of the College Football Playoff to ESPN, and Sherman believes ESPN’s strategy is to “lock up as many sports rights of significance as I can for as long as I can and if I do that, then I'll be able to stay relevant whether we're living in a cable world or a streaming world.” Sherman also believes ESPN will take advantage of sublicensing certain CFP games or packages. “I also do wonder how much competition there really was for this whole package to begin with because I think ESPN needs it way more than any of the other outlets out there. … In essence, I think the deal makes sense for ESPN. I think it makes sense for the NCAA, and I think ESPN will be in a mode of trying to figure out any way they can to to remain profitable and and to have a healthy balance sheet in this world we're entering where suddenly the bidders for all the marquee sports will change from the broadcast networks to Apple, Amazon, Google and probably Netflix, even though we're not there yet.” (link)

MLB’s new Nike jerseys have been a flop so far with fans and players, who claim the new duds look more like replicas. One complaint has to do with the size of the lettering on the back, as USA Today’s Gabe Lacques points out: “If you’re 6-foot-2, 245-pound lefty Jose Alvarado, the ALVARADO on the back of the jersey reads more like alvarado.” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred last week said of the jerseys, which debuted to rave player reviews during last year’s All-Star Game: “They are designed to be performance wear as opposed to what’s traditionally been worn. They have been tested more extensively than any jersey in any sport. … I think when people wear them a little bit, they’re going to be really popular.” While several players, including some notable Nike athletes, have lauded the new jerseys, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, who also has an endorsement deal with Nike, says he’s reached out to the company about some of the design choices, including the coloring. “Cubbie blue is its own blue, right? This blue on the uniform is a little bit different than Cubbie blue. So how can we just recapture that? … With some of those things, it’s like this makes a Cubs uniform a Cubs uniform. It doesn’t need to change. I think that they will probably have to end up figuring out a way to kind of go back to what it used to be.” (link, link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams shares a graphic breaking down the revenue sources of the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS. Most notably, 66% of the NFL’s revenue comes via “national revenue” while 1% comes from local media. MLB, meanwhile, generates 26% of its revenue from national revenue and 23% from local media. Seating/suites account for the biggest chunk of MLB revenue at 31%. The same category accounts for 44% of the NHL’s revenue. National revenue also accounts for 41% of the NBA’s overall receipts. The latest from Arizona President Robert Robbins on what the Wildcats need in a new AD: “We’ve got to get the right leader in our athletic department. Someone who has experience, preferably a national figure who’s going to be a leader, who can come in and solve these problems and navigate our change from, sadly, the demise of the Pac-12 into the Big 12.” Meanwhile, the Arizona Republic’s Greg Moore argues Arizona needs to hire a new AD who is forward thinking on NIL: “Robbins’ next athletic director needs to consider player endorsement deals as an opportunity instead of as an obstacle. If players can get paid by a car dealership, for example, that dealership should be prepared to promote the partnership, something that should help UA reduce its advertising costs. [...] If I were making the hire, I’d be looking for someone with a proven record of successful big ideas. I’d look for someone who could strike a balance that allows the business community to pay and promote athletes, while individual donors continue to boost the athletic department.” More. (link)

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver points to developments around NIL as one reason the league is reassessing what to do with its G League Ignite team going forward: “...now some of those same players who didn't want to be one-and-done players because they felt it was unfair and they wanted the ability not just to earn a living playing basketball but to do commercial deals that weren't available to them at college, to hire professional agents, an opportunity that wasn't available to them at college, they now -- all of those same opportunities have become available to them. [...] I think that now we've begun discussions with the NCAA, the vast majority of the top players will play in college and never play in the NBA, of course, so we have a common interest in just improving the game, developing players.” (link)

The Men’s Basketball NCAA Tournament Selection Committee’s bracket preview placed Purdue as the No. 1 overall seed, with defending champion Connecticut the overall No. 2 seed. While the Huskies are ranked No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press poll, the Boilermakers earned the edge because of better metrics across the board, nine Quadrant 1 wins and 15 Quadrant 1 and 2 wins, both tops in the country. Houston and Arizona rounded out the top seeds, while North Carolina, Tennessee, Marquette and Kansas were 2-seeds; Alabama, Baylor, Iowa State and Duke were 3-seeds; and Auburn, San Diego State, Illinois and Wisconsin were the 4-seeds. SWAC Commissioner/Committee Chair Charles McClelland said Dayton, Creighton and Clemson were in discussion for the final spots in the group of 16, as well. All four 1-seeds in last year's mock-bracket reveal ended up as 1-seeds in the bracket on Selection Sunday. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines the logistics of Kansas playing its home football games in two stadiums next year and points out that Children’s Mercy Park, the home of Sporting KC, has a capacity of just 20K. As such, Jayhawks Deputy AD for External Affairs and Revenue Generation Jason Booker says the school won’t sell any single-game tickets to the two matchups scheduled there (Lindenwood and UNLV) but will reserve seats for students and season ticket holders. Booker tells Brown KU plans to work with several groups on campus to help facilitate travel and make sure students can easily get to the games. Additionally, the school plans to work with local businesses in Lawrence to find ways to help them be involved in game days. Along with the challenges come opportunities, particularly as they relate to revenue generation from in-stadium signage, as Booker explains: “One of the tricky things about the old version of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is that we actually didn’t have a ton of great inventory for partners,” which is something the school plans to address with the renovations. “Playing these games at the other stadiums actually gives us better inventory.” Meanwhile, Booker says KU was able to send EA Sports renderings of what the stadium should look like after the renovations are completed to be used in the upcoming video game. CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd does a final analysis of the 2023 college football season, notes that scoring across the FBS was down for a third straight year, something that has not happened since the NCAA started tracking stats in 1937. Digging deeper, Dodd explains that average scoring was down to 27.78 points per team, the lowest mark since 2009; total offense was down for the fifth straight year (385.70 yards), the lowest since 2010; average yards passing (229.55) were the lowest since 2010; average yards rushing (156.15) the lowest since 2009; and average touchdowns per game (3.47) the lowest since 2008. Dodd explains his reasoning behind the drops: “The new first-down rule eliminated a handful of plays from the game [approximately 4.5 plays/game according to NCAA Secretary Rules Editor Steve Shaw]; elite defensive linemen have become more important because, for the most part, offensive linemen are losing that battle in the trenches; and defenses are simply getting smarter and more varied.” (link)

Texas Football HC Steve Sarkisian’s new four-year extension is pending approval from the Texas Board of Regents, but would make his 2024 salary $10.3M, compared to the previously slated $5.8M. He is set to receive annual $100K bumps, putting him at $10.9M in 2030. The new deal also comes with 20 hours of personal use for a private aircraft, country club membership, two vehicles, a special one-time payment of $300K due on or before April 1, 2024, up to 12 tickets and a suite for home football games plus other ticket perks, and annual performance incentives worth a maximum of $1.85M. Among those are $300K for a conference title, $200K for major CoY awards and $1.25M for a CFP championship. (link, link)

Sticking with the Longhorns, Texas Football DC Pete Kwiatkowski, OC Coach Kyle Flood and Assistant HC/Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends Jeff Banks are getting contract extensions through the 2026 season. Kwiatkowski, who was paid $1.7M in each of his first three years at Texas, is getting a guaranteed, three-year extension that will pay him $1.8M in 2024; $1.9M in 2025; and $2M in 2026. Flood, who was already contracted to earn $1.325M in 2024 and $1.4M in 2025, is getting a guaranteed, one-year extension that will pay him $1.475M in 2026. Banks, who was already contracted to earn $1.15M in 2024, is getting a guaranteed, two-year extension that will pay him $1.2M in 2025 and $1.25M in 2026. (link)

Our condolences to the Wolverine community as former Michigan AD Jack Weidenbach has passed away at the age of 99. He served as AD in Ann Arbor from 1990-94, but his time with Michigan spanned nearly three decades. Air Force has launched a fundraising campaign - expected to be in the neighborhood of $15M with a $2.5M lead gift already secured - for upgrades to its baseball stadium. Details: “The baseball stadium renovation will create a first-class facility and home for Air Force baseball. A modern concourse will be constructed to surround Erdle Field with 600-plus chairback seats, permanent concessions, restrooms, and a new press box. The project will also see renovations to both dugouts, along with a new home clubhouse that will feature a locker room, nutrition station, and training room.” (link)

JohnWallStreet is skeptical the ESPN-Fox-Warner Bros. Discovery sports bundle will have the impact on the industry that others are projecting. E.W. Scripps President/CEO Adam Symson agrees and remarks: “I’m not sure why there’s been this incredible overreaction [to the announcement]. As long as these networks follow rules around antitrust and collusion, which I’m sure they will, it’s [just] another virtual MVPD in an already very crowded entertainment marketplace. … This joint venture is not going to be bidding for rights. Nor does [it] materially change the amount that the [three] networks can afford to [each individually] bid against big tech for the rights.” Symson also contends that “without broadcast and local affiliates to actually underwrite the acquisition of sports rights, D2C [streaming doesn’t] make sense at all. That's why you've seen Netflix be smart about moving into sports.” A “top Disney executive” has assured Symson that broadcast affiliates will get carried along with the service, and that the station groups will be compensated, as they are with existing vMVPD partners, for that carriage. “The intention is for the exact same arrangement. Each company [will maintain] an arm's length negotiation with this product for the distribution of its signals, and for the local station to be the [affiliate] that [the subscriber] would receive [OTA] locally.” More from JWS. Apple in 2016 or 2017 approached ESPN about creating an aggregated sports broadcast platform that they would house, according to former ESPN President John Skipper, who says: “Apple at one point attempted to create this bundle, and they couldn’t do it because they couldn’t accept that they would have to pay the same prices that Comcast paid. It’s a good idea to be the person to aggregate sports.” At that point, Skipper explains ESPN was far more concerned about the revenue they generated from linear TV while Apple ultimately pivoted to signing their own rights deals.
