Arizona has tapped Missouri AD Desireé Reed-Francois for the same post, effective March 3. Terms of Reed-Francois’ five-year contract starts with a $1M base salary in the first year with incremental raises to $1.2M in the fifth year. She will also receive an additional $250K annual contribution from the UA Foundation and be eligible for additional incentive compensation based on the department's athletic and academic success, as well as retention bonuses after four and five years of employment with the University. UA President Robert Robbins: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Desireé to the University of Arizona family, and we could not be more excited about the leadership experience and outstanding credentials she brings. Respected nationally for her commitment to student-athletes, Desireé has a history of success everywhere she's served and is exactly the right person we need to modernize our athletics operations and usher in an ongoing culture of success in all aspects of Athletics. This is a tremendous win for our university and I cannot wait for her to get started." Reed-Francois adds: "There are very few institutions that would entice me to leave an SEC athletics department with strong momentum. The University of Arizona has tremendous potential and is an institution — and an athletics program — on the rise, and I want to be a part of shaping that future.” (link); According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Ben Frederickson, “there had been some low-key friction” between Reed-Francois and “certain members of MU board of curators. Lots of university ‘oversight’ that suggested lack of united front, but didn’t think it was something that would lead to immediate departure. Comments should be something.” (link)

Colorado State AD Joe Parker will “step back” from his position and serve as special advisor to CSU President Amy Parsons. He will be succeeded on an interim basis by John Weber, the executive director of the Rams-focused Green and Gold Guard collective. Parsons on Parker: “Joe has been instrumental to all of our athletic programs’ success during his tenure at CSU. On behalf of the entire Ram community, I want to sincerely thank Joe for his leadership and commitment to building a program that values and strives for excellence on the field and in the classroom. … The Rams aspire to play at the highest levels, and that means we have to look at innovative ways to support our student-athletes and coaches as well as engage our fans, alumni, students, faculty, staff and donors. Over the last year, I have spent time assessing and evaluating our athletics program, and navigating the rapidly changing landscape will require a new style of leadership.” Parsons adds of Weber: “John has built the Green and Gold Guard from scratch, and as part of that incredible effort he has earned the respect and trust of our coaches, student-athletes and supporters. Not only is he on the sidelines of nearly every game, but John is engaged on the national level with the fast-changing intricacies of NIL and seeking new and innovative ways to support all of CSU’s student-athletes and programs. I am confident in John’s capacity to take on this interim role.” (link)

The Pac-12 has promoted Deputy Commissioner Teresa Gould to commissioner, effective March 1. Washington State President/Pac-12 Board of Directors Chair Kirk Schulz: “Teresa’s deep knowledge of collegiate athletics and unwavering commitment to student-athletes makes her uniquely qualified to help guide the Pac-12 Conference during this period of unprecedented change in college sports. As the first female commissioner of an Autonomy Five conference, Teresa will be able to bring new perspectives and fresh ideas to the table as the industry works to find its way through this shifting landscape. We look forward to her leadership as we write the next chapter in the Pac-12’s storied history." Gould: “We find ourselves navigating an extraordinarily complex time in our industry. The challenges we face must be met head on, with a reinvigorated energy to transform and forge ahead. I look forward to working with both campus and national leaders to find solutions that will preserve opportunities for student-athletes and set us up for long term viability and success.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger examines what life is like as a Group of 5 football program, and Southern Miss HC Will Hall explains the offseason is largely dedicated to raising money. “I do zero football anymore. Zero football in my life right now. I do culture and recruiting. Most of my day is spent all across the southern United States raising money – for NIL.” Liberty HC Jamey Chadwell adds: “We are a farm system. No matter who you are, you are going to have to try hard to hold on to your top players. That gets taxing. We are taking the approach that if a freshman plays and he does well, we are only going to have him for one more year.” With the departures of several HCs for AC positions – in both the NFL and in college – AFCA Executive Director/former Wyoming HC Craig Bohl observes: “It is more movement than what I have ever seen. What has changed is the salary scales, job demands and the uncertainty of where things are going in the next five years. I got a feeling of uncertainty and angst at our coaches’ meeting. There are seismic changes happening.” Looking ahead, Dellenger notes that “43 Power Five public school athletic departments generated more revenue than the highest-producing G5 department (San Diego State)” last year, and “that gap is on a path of inevitable growth.” After losing three players to the portal despite going undefeated last year, Chadwell sums it up like this: “Those guys would be all-conference for us. LSU paid for a car and an apartment and like $300,000. What do you do?” More. (link)

Former Nebraska women’s basketball student-athlete Ashley Scoggin has filed a lawsuit against the university alleging Huskers AD Trev Alberts and WBB HC Amy Williams failed to take appropriate action when her romantic relationship with Huskers AC Chuck Love became widely known. In a complaint filed in federal court, Scroggin alleges Love took a special interest in her and that the relationship turned sexual, causing Scoggin to fear retaliation if she refused to engage in it. Per the AP: “On the night before a game at Penn State in February 2022, team members and practice players created a ruse to confirm and videotape Scoggin's presence in Love's hotel room. A male practice player falsely represented himself to the desk clerk as Love to obtain a duplicate room key. Two team members confronted Scoggin in Love's room. They reported their findings and showed the video to Williams.” From the suit: “Williams cast Ashley in the role of a seducer and a liar. She allowed the players to berate and accuse Ashley for hours. … NU, Williams and Alberts allowed the speculation and perception to fester that Ashley was ‘equally to blame’ or otherwise had done something improper when they should have sent a clear message that it is always improper for a professional coach to pursue a sexual relationship with a student-athlete.” (link)
|
More from the Lincoln Journal-Star’s Chris Dunker, who reports “Love was suspended with pay before the [Penn State] game, while Scoggin was removed from the team. The lawsuit states another unnamed player told Scoggin that Love would lose his job if she said anything, while Love encouraged her to claim she was mentally ill. Scoggin later had a meeting with her parents, Williams, and Alberts, in which she said the university employees ‘were motivated to avoid scandal and embarrassment’ to the women’s basketball team instead of protecting a student-athlete.” More details. Baylor on Sunday retired the jersey of former women’s hoops star Brittney Griner, whose return marked her first appearance at a Bears game since her college career ended in 2013. At an alumni event on Saturday, Griner acknowledged she hadn’t been around much but promised that will change. Bears HC Nicki Collen: “All I wanted was Brittney to feel loved, by our team, by our university, by our community. It was emotional to see her tears. It was emotional to see her smiles yesterday. Whether this is healing or whatever, she’s a part of our family and I’m so grateful that we were able to get this done.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports that “several involved parties say the administrative momentum is there” to expand March Madness by anywhere from four to 12 teams, “whether there is public support for it or not.” Forde adds: “Commissioners and athletic directors will trot out a line about percentage of participation in the championship. Currently, the field of 68 comprises 18.8% (8) of Division I—a lower percentage than some other sports have in their championship fields. But keep these two things in mind: The NCAA keeps letting more schools move up to Division I, from 326 two decades ago to 345 in 2011, when they inflated the field from 64 to 68, to the current 362. Stop the bloat. Every team that competes in its conference tournament has a chance to earn an NCAA bid. That’s the true start of March Madness, when leagues gather and compete in a single-elimination format for one of 32 automatic bids. … The tournament is perfectly contained in three weeks of competition, laid out on a bracket that fits snugly on a printed piece of paper or a single computer screen. Expanding it would be like building a dream home and then deciding to put a tacky aluminum siding addition on the back. Bigger is not often better, and eventually bigger becomes worse. This would be worse.” (link)

The NBA is on pace to break last year’s record for attendance and sellouts, per Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, who reports attendance is up 2% over last year, which set records for total attendance (22.2M) and average per game (18,077). Meanwhile, the 791 sellouts are also poised to be eclipsed, with the league already at 524 sellouts at the All-Star break. (link); In addition, through the All-Star Game, the league’s TV ratings are up at least 5% YoY, with 18 franchises having increased their linear TV viewership over last year. The Nuggets lead the way with a 139% uptick. On the other end of the spectrum, the Trail Blazers have experienced a 49% decrease in ratings. Playfly Sports President Craig Sloan: “Twice as many teams are up in NBA over being down. That's not normally the case. It should be 50-50 – somebody's winning, somebody's losing. Usually, interest will wane in markets where a team's losing, and the others will go up. But having two-thirds of your teams in a positive growth is a good story. ... If you look at it, the local market part of the ecosystem is really strong.’’ (link)

The College Football Playoff has not agreed to a new media rights deal, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher in a memo to league administrators described reports of the CFP agreeing to or having concluded an extension of the media rights deal with ESPN as “incorrect.” From the February 13 email: “Several news outlets are reporting that a new six-year television deal has been concluded for the College Football Playoff. Be advised, these reports are incorrect. Neither the Management Committee (commissioners) nor the Board of Managers (presidents) have reviewed a draft agreement nor has any vote been taken.” Dellenger explains that under “typical protocol, the CFP Management Committee…would make a recommendation to the Board of Managers for the adoption of any CFP decisions. The Board of Managers is the highest ranking governance body of the CFP. While the CFP continues to work toward an extension with ESPN, no deal can be formally agreed to or signed because of a litany of unresolved matters related to the long-term structure of the playoff, multiple commissioners tell Yahoo Sports.” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione and Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg talk with The Oklahoman’s Ryan Aber and Scott Wright about the current landscape, and Castiglione remarks: “I can't say I feel good about anything related to the structure because there isn't one. I guess you could say by default, the market has filled the void created by the lack of forward thinking in this space. It's created the most chaotic and disruptive environment in the history of college athletics, period. That is indisputable.” Weiberg, who serves on the NCAA NIL Committee, says there may be some order to the chaos coming soon: “I think you’ll see some things in April along those lines that will give the university more ability to get involved, stopping short of bringing (NIL) in house at this point, but allowing us to get more involved as an institution. I think there are advantages and disadvantages of it coming in-house, but the longer we are in it, I think the more convinced I am that it needs to come in-house.” He adds of the voluntary agent registry and standardized contracts being proposed: “It’s providing some protections for the student-athletes. They can have more education about what kinds of questions they need to be asking. The reporting (of NIL deals) is intended to start to shed some light on what is going on in this space … so there starts to be an understanding of the market. By shedding light on the market, if there’s something that seems very different from that, it allows the student-athlete, again, to ask questions about why it is so different.” (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley during last night’s All-Star Game asserted that “we’ve screwed up college sports with the NIL thing” and asked NBA Commissioner Adam Silver if he could “get together with the NCAA because, number one, the NCAA, they’re boneheads. The reason I call them boneheads is they’re always reactive. … So, what do you think we’re going to be able to do between the NIL and the G League?” Silver says he’s met several times with NCAA President Charlie Baker and notes: “For the domestic U.S. players, without a great development system – you guys didn’t just fall off the turnip truck. You guys all came up through incredible systems that developed you into NBA players. We’re seeing that internationally. I think there’s a reason why you’re seeing so many top-notch players coming into the league now so skilled. It’s not just at the college level; we’ve got to address youth basketball in this country. There’s a whole big ecosystem that we have to fix.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner answers a reader question about how events might have turned out differently if the Pac-12 had hired Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. First, he points out that now former Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff and Yormark inherited very different situations. Most notably, The Big 12 was “both devoid of schools coveted by the SEC or Big Ten and stocked with presidents and athletic directors who prioritized survival and stability over all else. … Yormark had another advantage — one of his own making: He hustled. He understood the urgency baked into the media rights negotiations; Kliavkoff never did. He understood that college sports is a relationship business; Kliavkoff never did. He realized the realignment rock fight required rocks; Kliavkoff brought a teddy bear.” More from Wilner. (link)

Missouri FAR Pam Bruzina and Tennessee FAR Don Bruce joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss the industry’s most pressing topics from the FAR’s perspective. Bruce emphasizes the importance of understanding the “academic performance of our transfers is a function not just of what happens after they transfer, but also what was going on before they transferred. You think about it, you get to the point where you're transferring universities or colleges, you've gone through something that didn't go well, and maybe it's to the point of crisis or trauma. In many cases transfers are absolutely necessary and in everyone's best interest. We have to resist the temptation to think of this as free agency and people are just moving around to maximize athletic opportunities – sure, that happens, but there's a lot more to it. … Let's be careful to rush to judgment. Let's really be careful about looking at the data and understanding there's a lot going on for these students even before they click yes on that transfer portal.” Full interview on ADU. (link)

Former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski last week criticized Ohio State’s decision to part ways with MBB HC Chris Holtmann: "After three years at Duke, I'd be fired. Part of building a culture is going through adversity. We were fortunate to be allowed to do that. Our schools were fortunate because we were allowed to build a culture. Our culture is still there at Duke. That's what you want to keep going." Coach K’s comments came on his SiriusXM radio show, where former Villanova MBB HC Jay Wright was a guest and added: "This situation with Chris Holtmann, we've got to win now. It's almost like everybody is a junior college coach now. … They might not be patient with us. That's why I brought up Holtmann; 70% of Ohio State's points come from freshmen and sophomores. If those guys stay, whoever gets that job next year is going to have a hell of a team. No one is waiting on those young teams anymore. It's so different." (link)

College football coaching is not “nearing an apocalypse,” according to USA Today’s Dan Wolken, who contends the profession is simply evolving the same way others do. “Just like the journalist, the computer programmer, the airline pilot or the dentist, few people leave an industry doing the same job the same way they did at the beginning of their careers. Most of us can relate to the idea that change in the workplace is hard, and not always for the better.” The two biggest departures from the sport this offseason – former Alabama HC Nick Saban and former Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh – that are often cited as a sign of the coming coachpocalypse, are easily explained away by other factors: “Saban is 72 years old with seven national championships and more money than he could ever spend. His eventual retirement has been a major topic for nearly a decade. It’s completely normal for him to call it a career at this stage.” Harbaugh, meanwhile, stayed longer in Ann Arbor than anywhere else in his coaching career and is leaving after delivering a national championship to his alma mater. “Now he’ll try to add a Super Bowl, a goal he's never been shy about.” The reality, Wolken posits, is there’s never been a better time to be a college football coach. “Guys at the top end of the sport are making $10M per year on guaranteed contracts that are running for seven or eight years.” Yes, Wolken acknowledges, changes in the system are making coaches’ jobs harder, “the same way disruptions in every other industry have made people's jobs more complicated. Welcome to the real world.” (link)

ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski has committed $50K to the St. Bonaventure-focused Team Unfurl collective. In a video released yesterday, Woj added: “We’re going to match another $50K if you’ll subscribe, if you’ll give. We have a chance here to raise $150K before the end of this basketball season. St. Bonaventure, once again, one of the elite mid-major programs in this country. We have a chance to keep coach [Mark] Schmidt and this team and university competitive with anybody in the country.” (link)

CNBC’s Alex Sherman joins The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch Sports Media podcast and says he believes ESPN is “quite content for their DTC product not to be a monster as long as the cable bundle survives. So, I think what they’re hoping is that whatever that number may be, 45M, 50M American households will just continue to subscribe to cable. The amount of people canceling cable will at some point plateau and flatten out. That product will not go to zero like some people think, and we will not just evolve into a full streaming universe – and/or there will be some sort of streaming bundle that doesn't exist today where ESPN’s direct to consumer service will be in effect bundled with Max and Netflix and whatever other streaming service exists in a couple years from now. And that will replace the cable bundle, and the economics will be something that resembles the cable bundle today so it's sort of an equal switch for ESPN.” Sherman and Deitsch also talk about the value of the College Football Playoff to ESPN, and Sherman believes ESPN’s strategy is to “lock up as many sports rights of significance as I can for as long as I can and if I do that, then I'll be able to stay relevant whether we're living in a cable world or a streaming world.” Sherman also believes ESPN will take advantage of sublicensing certain CFP games or packages. “I also do wonder how much competition there really was for this whole package to begin with because I think ESPN needs it way more than any of the other outlets out there. … In essence, I think the deal makes sense for ESPN. I think it makes sense for the NCAA, and I think ESPN will be in a mode of trying to figure out any way they can to to remain profitable and and to have a healthy balance sheet in this world we're entering where suddenly the bidders for all the marquee sports will change from the broadcast networks to Apple, Amazon, Google and probably Netflix, even though we're not there yet.” (link)

MLB’s new Nike jerseys have been a flop so far with fans and players, who claim the new duds look more like replicas. One complaint has to do with the size of the lettering on the back, as USA Today’s Gabe Lacques points out: “If you’re 6-foot-2, 245-pound lefty Jose Alvarado, the ALVARADO on the back of the jersey reads more like alvarado.” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred last week said of the jerseys, which debuted to rave player reviews during last year’s All-Star Game: “They are designed to be performance wear as opposed to what’s traditionally been worn. They have been tested more extensively than any jersey in any sport. … I think when people wear them a little bit, they’re going to be really popular.” While several players, including some notable Nike athletes, have lauded the new jerseys, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, who also has an endorsement deal with Nike, says he’s reached out to the company about some of the design choices, including the coloring. “Cubbie blue is its own blue, right? This blue on the uniform is a little bit different than Cubbie blue. So how can we just recapture that? … With some of those things, it’s like this makes a Cubs uniform a Cubs uniform. It doesn’t need to change. I think that they will probably have to end up figuring out a way to kind of go back to what it used to be.” (link, link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams shares a graphic breaking down the revenue sources of the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS. Most notably, 66% of the NFL’s revenue comes via “national revenue” while 1% comes from local media. MLB, meanwhile, generates 26% of its revenue from national revenue and 23% from local media. Seating/suites account for the biggest chunk of MLB revenue at 31%. The same category accounts for 44% of the NHL’s revenue. National revenue also accounts for 41% of the NBA’s overall receipts.
