#8: D3sports.com’s Ryan Scott reports the NEWMAC will be the second DIII conference to sign a streaming deal with FloSports
. On the bigger picture for Flo, EVP for Global Rights Acquisition Phil Wendler: “We’re not going after Tier 1 rights. We want to be in spaces where there’s a good fit, with opportunity and demand, where there’s a need for a holistic media partner. I believe there’s not only a national market (for Division III), but an international market — we’re pushing these feeds around the world. If we could have every D-III competition on our network today, it would be great for us and great for the schools.”
Landmark
Commissioner Katie Boldvich tells Scott her league has seen a total viewership dropoff around 60-70%, with Olympic sports being closer to 50%, as she notes “So many of our free views were just someone tuning in for a play or two, to check the score. With the subscription model almost all of our viewers are watching the entire game and the number of people watching entire games haven’t decreased all that much.” Further, the Landmark is “paying extra” to have free on-demand replays after three days to “keep our Landmark Network operational to give people as much access as they want after the fact.” Lots more. #4: Former Sewanee Women’s Basketball HC Brody Curry violated NCAA
sports gambling rules by placing over $93K in bets over a 26-month period, including $28K on college athletics across 407 bets. The DIII Committee on Infractions
writing: “Moreover, these types of behaviors have become normalized in society and, at least in this case, do not appear to have had any influence on the integrity of intercollegiate competitions or resulted in any competitive advantage. Regardless of the evolving views and prevalence of sports wagering, such activities remain against NCAA rules. Given the prevalence of sports wagering activities on college campuses, it is arguably even more important that those closest to student-athletes refrain from such behaviors to protect student-athletes and the integrity of the game. To that end, institutional educational efforts pertaining to sports wagering activities are critical.” Penalties include one year of probation, a two-year show-cause order for Curry, a $1,500 fine and two years of in-person attendance at the NCAA Regional Rules Seminars.
