Eastern Tennessee District Judge Clifton Corker has issued a preliminary injunction for the attorneys generals in Tennessee and Virginia, thus suspending NCAA NIL rules. Corker: “In an apparent attempt to prohibit those (recruiting) inducements, the NCAA issued guidance classifying NIL collectives as ‘boosters’ to prevent them from negotiating with student-athletes during the recruiting and transfer processes. The NCAA's prohibition likely violates federal antitrust law and harms student-athletes. Accordingly, (plaintiffs) are entitled to a preliminary injunction enjoining enforcement of the NCAA's 'NIL-recruiting ban.’” From the injunction: “It is further ORDERED that, effective immediately, the NCAA is restrained and enjoined from enforcing the Rule of Restitution as applied to the foregoing NIL activities until a full and final decision on the merits in the instant action.” (link, link)

The city of Charlotte is pushing to bring the CIAA Football championship back to the Queen City in 2025, per The Charlotte Post. City Council member James Mitchell: “I think we’ve got to reimagine our relationship [with the CIAA]. The way we [lost] that basketball tournament, it tells me we need to rebrand and show the CIAA – particularly because their office is here – that we are committed to their conference. I think the best way to do that is take the football championship and make it a marquee event for them. […] We think it’s a better location,” Mitchell said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to rebrand the football championship and then at the same time, start to build goodwill with the CIAA.” (link)

A recent NCAA student-athlete health and wellness study found that men’s sports athletes were 20-30 percentage points higher than women's sports athletes on all measures of positive body image. When asked about their body image, 68% of men and 45% of women felt they have a good body, 53% of men and 35% of women were happy with their current weight, and 59% of men and 31% of women liked what they look like in pictures. Black student-athletes were more likely than other racial groups to hold positive perceptions of body image. The study also found that, “despite two-thirds of student-athletes perceiving themselves to be the right weight for their sport, a majority reported that they were actively trying to change their weight. Women's sports athletes were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight for their sport and report trying to lose weight, while men's sports athletes were more likely to report being underweight and report trying to gain weight.” Additionally, student-athletes reported using a range of supplements to enhance their diets, including protein products (44%), energy drinks (44%), multivitamins (41%), creatine (23%) and multivitamins/minerals with other additives, such as caffeine or probiotics (22%). Regarding access to healthy foods, 43% of men and 30% of women indicated that healthy food options are readily available after practice and competition. Meanwhile, 49% of men and 45% of women said they can afford to eat healthy meals each day, and 50% of men and 32% of women said they have time to eat healthy meals each day. More. (link)

The American sports betting industry recorded $10.92B in revenue for 2023 with a total handle of $119.84B, according to the American Gaming Association's annual report. The record revenue figure represents a 44.5% YoY increase, while the handle, also a record high, is 27.8% higher than 2022. AGA SVP of Government Relations Chris Cylke is tempering expectations for 2024: "I think we're in some ways victims of our own success over the past five years in that we now have 38 states plus DC that have already taken the step of legalizing and regulating sports betting, so there's a lot fewer states left on the board. Some of them have pretty significant political challenges in terms of getting sports betting itself enacted. When we look at the map, there could be potentially two or three states that have some activity and get it across the finish line this year. There could be zero, which would be disappointing, but that's where we are right now with the progress that we've made over the past almost six years." (link)
