The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen observes that new Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois has served in 11 athletic departments in the past 27 years, adding: “She's done it all: compliance, student services, academics, finance, strategic projects, fund raising, damage control, overseeing football programs and men's basketball programs. If anything, she's a survivor.” Hansen points out Reed-Francois was hired in 2004 at Fresno State for perhaps her most challenging job, to “clean up a program under NCAA investigation for rules broken during basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian’s years. … No wonder Reed-Franciois, a graduate of the UA College of Law, was agreeable to return to her alma mater. Compared to what Fresno State went through 20 years ago, Arizona's current financial challenges don't seem so daunting. … Reed-Francois' career has been two decades of crisis management.” Hansen also compares Missouri’s 2022-23 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standing in its conference, “bottom-feeder territory” to Arizona’s success in the Pac-12 championship race the past 12 years, when the Cats took home titles in seven different sports, reached the Women’s Basketball Final Four and won a women’s golf national championship. Further, from Hansen: “Here's the killer statistic: A year ago, the UA led all Pac-12 schools in total attendance, roughly 785,000 in all sports, football included.” A bit more on her path back to Tucson. As you’ve probably already seen, Wake Forest’s Men’s Basketball victory over Duke ended with a court storming & an injured Blue Devil in sophomore standout Kyle Filipowski. Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer: “When are we going to ban courtstorming? When are we going to ban that? How many times does a player have to get into something where they get punched or they get pushed or they get taunted right in their face? It’s a dangerous thing. I don’t want that to take away from the game that Wake played because Wake played a big-time game… When I played, at least it was 10 seconds and then you could storm the court. Now, it’s the buzzer doesn’t even go off and they’re running off the floor.” Demon Deacons AD John Currie issued an apology and added, “Although our event management staff and security had rehearsed postgame procedures to protect the visiting team and officials, we clearly must do better. I appreciate the postgame comments of Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer and I am in complete agreement that something more must be done about the national phenomenon of court and field storming and Wake Forest looks forward to being a part of those conversations.” (link - video of incident, link - Scheyer, link - Currie)

A potential expansion to March Madness was discussed yesterday on ESPN College GameDay. ESPN’s Jay Bilas: “Never underestimate the NCAA’s capacity to do something stupid. If they did this, it would be profoundly stupid. If anyone says, ‘More teams need access to the tournament,’ every team has access to the tournament now, all you have to do is win your conference automatic bid against your peers. [...] It’s a National Championship event, you should have to do something hard to get in and if you think it’s too hard, then Division II is wide open. I just don’t understand this, why would you mess with this? [...] If this is just about money, then say so.” Lots more in the seven-minute segment, including Seth Greenberg’s plea for the sport to continue to be forward-thinking. (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban tells ESPN’s Chris Low he wants to stay involved & positively impact industry changes: “If my voice can bring about some meaningful change, I want to help any way I can, because I love the players, and I love college football. What we have now is not college football -- not college football as we know it. You hear somebody use the word 'student-athlete.' That doesn't exist. [...] I'm not really looking for a job, but I do know I'd like to impact college football the best way I can, whether it's being a spokesperson or anything else. Listen, I'm for the players. It's not that I'm not for the players. I want to see the players have a great quality of life and be able to create value for themselves. But we've gone to nobody talking about education, nobody talking about creating value for their future, to talking only about how much money can I make while I'm in college.” More. (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast and says of the possibility of networks sublicensing the early-round College Football Playoff games from ESPN: “They’re going to want some of the good games, too. They don’t just want the first four because those games are going to be up against NFL competition probably, and they’d probably just rather stand pat unless they can get a shot at the semis and the finals.” Thompson also remarks that if he were Washington State President Kirk Schulz, he’d play every possible card in his deck because he has nothing to lose. “For him, he’s not going to get an auto-bid. So, 5+7 is actually better for him than 6+6. He's going to push to consider to still being a P5 in terms of money, and he's going to get that the next two years, there's no doubt… but for them, at this point, staying flexible and staying relevant is very important because there could be some more moves and they might get scooped up to to another conference. So, the last thing you want to do is burn a lot of bridges on the way out because you might have to cross those bridges again.” Thompson expects that “one or maybe two of the first four (opening round) games in the CFP playoffs might be behind a paywall,” explaining that “I just don’t know how they’re going to get to the dollar figure that they want to get to without making those first-round games a little more valuable than what they look like at face value. … There are going to be some chances and opportunities where the games might not be that good, so the broadcasters aren't going to write a huge check, but the streamers might.” Lots more. The Penn State Board of Trustees has approved a new compensation package for President Neeli Bendapudi. Bendapudi’s base salary will remain at $950K while her annual deferred compensation will increase by $255K to $555K per year. Trustees also approved an increase in her second five-year completion bonus payable in 2032 from $1.25M to $1.5M. She is already set to receive a $1.25M completion bonus in 2027. Board Subcommittee on Compensation Chair Mary Lee Schneider explains Bendapudi also will have an “evergreen” contract, “meaning each year with mutual agreement President Bendapudi will always have a five year contract.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How does donor feedback and creativity fit in fundraising?
Alvin Hines, II, Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Revenue Generation at Florida Atlantic University, stops by 1Q to talk about fundraising. The key topics covered were how his personality fits within the specific niche of athletic development, what is the process of fundraising in an athletics department, and how much input do donors (and potential donors) have in how funds should be used.
• Personality is a big factor in fundraising • Season ticket holders are a starting point • Many big ideas come from donors • Donors will most likely support their own ideas
Hines notes that one of the biggest jobs of a fundraiser is to leverage your current assets, whether that be underutilized space or events that already exist. Listen on Apple Podcast (link) or Spotify (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect is the way we're able to accomplish that.” (link)

The 25 announcers EA Sports will include in the College Football 25 game are all males. ESPN’s Holly Rowe and Molly McGrath aren’t having it. McGrath: “So exciting! I really hope @EASPORTSCollege included female broadcasters, as well. Women are a huge part of college football.” Rowe with a more direct approach: “How about including some women @EASPORTS 30 years on the college football sidelines.” (link)

The NCAA Women's Executive Committee approved new weight classes for use in women's NCAA collegiate wrestling, beginning in the 2024-25 season. Most classifications will stay close to the same, but the heaviest three will face significant changes. The biggest adjustment is at 170 pounds. Any current wrestler in that category would move up or down 10 pounds. The heaviest category is 207 pounds. Full chart included. The NAIA will now put this slate of weight classes forth to its National Administrative Council in the first week of March for its approval. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker reacted to the NIL decision in Tennessee yesterday: “You’re talking about 95 percent of colleges that probably spend somewhere between ... $40 million and $5 million on college sports, and they lose money. They don’t have TV contracts and nobody can look at their income statements or balance sheets and conclude there would be a way for them to make money. [...] I think in the end, we are going to need Congress to do something. Because people will draw a lot of conclusions from court decisions. And then there will be new ones. [...] I think the most important thing here is let's deal with some of the issues around accountability and transparency and consumer protections first. And if we then want to have a conversation about other stuff, about how this should all work, especially if we get to the point where we give schools the ability to do more in this space, I'm all-in on that.” (link, link)

Outkick’s Chat Withrow asked Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti if he was ready to help reform all of college sports, now that he defeated the NCAA on NIL in his home state. Skrmetti: “We’re happy to talk with them if they want to start talking about ways to resolve this in the short run or the long run. We’re happy to keep litigating if that’s what it takes. We like our chances. But whatever happens, we are going to continue fighting to make sure that student-athletes have fair and clear rules that are going to let them enjoy the benefits of the sports that bring so much joy to everybody. Some key notes from Sportico’s Michael McCann: “Unless the NCAA successfully appeals the trial judge’s order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the injunction will remain in place for months—or possibly longer—depending on when a trial is held for Tennessee & Virginia v. NCAA. The order also restrains the NCAA from enforcing its Rule of Restitution (NCAA Bylaw 12.11.4.2) as applied to NIL activities. Under the rule, the NCAA can retroactively impose punishments if a player competes based on an injunction that is later vacated. By taking the Rule of Restitution off the boards, (Judge) Corker ensures (unless and until he is reversed by the Sixth Circuit) that athletes and schools relying on his order won’t later suffer a penalty if his injunction against the NIL-recruiting ban.” (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter to On3’s Pete Nakos: “I’m assuming the NCAA is going to do the same thing it did in the transfer rules case and say, ‘We’re not going to enforce our NIL rule anywhere.’ So, we’ll have no transfer rules or NIL rules in recruiting. What are collectives going to do now? They’re unleashed. This was already happening before. But now they’re going to do it without any fear of punishment. It will be interesting to see what rules the schools could have. They’re already involved with a lot of collectives as well, but this will just increase that involvement. Telling collectives what they want them to do and how much to offer. What is the recruiting process going to look like in the next few months?” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD Jay Artigues’ contract extension, which was announced earlier this month and runs through 2027, includes a base salary of $170K. That figure will increase by $20K in 2024-25, and he will receive raises of $10K the following two years. Artigues is also eligible for bonuses ranging from $500 to $25K. If the Lions raise $1.7M to $1.9M for NIL, corporate sponsorships or foundation funds, Artigues will receive $10K. That figures increases to $15K for fundraising between $2M and $2.2M and $25K for $2.5M+; however, Artigues’ bonus cap starts at $20K in the first year of his contract and increases $5K each subsequent year. Additionally, CollegeAD reports Artigues can bring home $5K for a balanced budget and $5K for reducing any cumulative deficit by 10% or more. Also, Artigues is only eligible for bonus pay if the department is not operating at a deficit or shows progress toward reducing a deficit by at least 3%. Should the Lions part ways with Artigues without cause, he would be owed the remainder of his salary for that fiscal year. If he leaves for another role at a four-year university, he would owe the school $50K. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde contends the Big Ten and SEC’s desire for “most favored nations status” is the “bigger and more troubling news” to come out of this week’s College Football Playoff Board of Managers and Management Committee meetings. “There is no satiating the appetite for the destruction of competitive balance. There is no pausing to actually see how the new format will work or to appreciate it in action. There is no caretaking of the overall sport. There is no concern about eventually pushing the envelope past the ripping point, the players past reasonable demands for non-professionals, the fans past what their wallets can support. Of course, these are many of the same people who want to expand the near-perfect NCAA basketball tournament beyond 68 teams, an ‘advancement’ that virtually nobody is clamoring for and who have expanded the richest conferences to 16 or 18 schools, in direct conflict with geography, academics and established traditions. They will always push for bigger, even when it’s not better.” More from Forde. (link)

On3’s Andy Staples and Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel offer their solution to fix the College Football Playoff as well as the offseason calendar. First, they submit expanding the CFP to 16 teams with no automatic qualifiers. Staples: “If you want an NFL-style, objective, standings-based model for making the playoff, then you’ll need a superleague that gets split into regionally and competitively balanced divisions. Maybe college football is headed there as the Big Ten and SEC consume the rest of the sport, but it’s not there yet. So instead let’s lean into the subjectivity and conference pride that make November arguments so much fun. … This wouldn’t guarantee access for a Group of Five team every year, but it would virtually guarantee access for Group of Five teams that deserve to play in the tournament and could actually win games in the tournament.” Their solution also includes playing games on campuses until the national championship game or permanent semifinal locations are established with the Rose and Sugar Bowls. Also: no conference championship games, which have “outlived their usefulness.” While the loss of revenue would cause leagues to push back, it would “allow the season to end on Thanksgiving weekend. Army-Navy gets played the next week. The Heisman Trophy isn’t voted on until after the CFP. Then the CFP starts on the second Saturday in December. This allows for semifinals on Jan. 1, either on campus or in the Rose/Sugar.” Finally, they suggest eliminating the early National Signing Day and going back to one NSD in February. “That way, the winter transfer portal window will have closed. … Coaches will know how many scholarships they have and what positions they need to fill. If coaches want time off, schools can enact NCAA rules to make March and July recruiting dead periods.” More. (link)

Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh gets a hold of the NIL contract EA Sports sent out to football student-athletes this week and notes: “One thing that immediately caught my attention was the ability of EA Sports to use slogans or logos. So, if an athlete creates their own phrase or logo, they’re giving EA Sports the ability to use it in the game without additional compensation. If I’m an athlete with the market power to profit off merchandise created with that slogan or logo, I’d probably think twice about that. … I also don’t love that they can use any derivative of the rights they’re procuring here. What if you don’t agree with how you’re being represented by a derivative use? Your only real recourse is to opt out of future games.” Dosh also catches up with several agents whose clients are being offered separate promotional deals, and “they tell me the most lucrative offers are four- to five-figures. … One agent suggested it’s less than the top 5% of players being offered these separate deals. [Extra Points publisher] Matt Brown…tells me approximately 200 football athletes are being targeted for the marketing pool.” Also from Dosh: “The term of the contract is from the time of being signed until the conclusion of the athlete’s last college football season…however, EA Sports has the right to continue to use the athlete’s NIL through the ‘commercial life of the Game(s) developed or released’ during the term, including the right to ‘use and distribute any Marketing Materials released’ during that term. Athletes can opt in now and then opt out of future games later.” Lots more. (link)

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a new rule allowing women's volleyball players to contact the ball more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact when the ball is played to a teammate. However, if the ball is played over the net, the double contact would be ruled a fault, and the team would lose the point. The panel also approved allowing each team to designate two liberos for each set of the match. Only one libero would be allowed on the court at a time, and the libero would be allowed to serve in one position. Other rules changes include allowing the referee to issue an administrative sanction (red card) to the home team in instances where spectators encroach the playing area and the host administration fails to resolve the problem; allowing interference above the net (whether an opponent was touched) to be added to the list of plays that can be challenged in video review; expanding the jewelry rule to allow small, snug-fitting nose rings and ear cuffs; and requiring all protests to be resolved during the match.
