The College Football Playoff Management Committee yesterday discussed the possibility of expanding the CFP field to 14 or 16 during its meetings when the new contract takes effect in 2026. The group also brought up the possibility of adding more AQ spots, and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti said after the meeting: “It was the most productive meeting I’ve been in since I started as commissioner and been fortunate to be in these meetings. We talked about some formatting and 14 came up. There was a good discussion about that. After that, no details other than we’ve got more work to do.” As for the potential of adding more AQ spots, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips cautioned: “All that stuff’s too premature. At the end of the day, it’s what’s the right model for (2026) and beyond?” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock added: “We need to be done with this within a month. I don’t know that anyone wants to put artificial deadlines on anything, but we need to be done with this. I think today left everyone with an encouraging feeling that we will be done.” Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand and Chris Vannini point out that “the idea of more first-round games has not been negotiated in current agreed-upon terms with ESPN, according to executives with knowledge of the discussions. While ESPN would be open to talking about them, the $1.3B annual agreed-upon average is the budget ESPN had set, so there is no guarantee that more games would mean significantly more money or any more at all.” (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel asserts that College Football Playoff leaders are trying to fix something that has yet to even be fully realized. “Suffice it to say, ‘what is best for college football’ is no longer their driving factor. At this point, it’s mostly what’s best for the Big Ten and SEC. Hence why the commissioners came out of the meeting to report they are discussing a potential 14- or 16-team field when the CFP’s contract expires in two years. The Big Ten, having ballooned from 14 to 18 teams, and the SEC, now at 16, want possibly three or even four automatic berths for themselves, and the ACC, Big 12, etc., have zero leverage with which to push back. None of this is an improvement on the format they’d already devised. … But the strangest thing about 14 teams is they’d just be delaying the inevitable next move to the nice, round number of 16. At which point the only teams getting an extra week of rest will be the lower-seeded teams that didn’t reach their conference title games. Pretty much the exact opposite of how the 12-team format incentivizes conference champions.” Ultimately, the decision comes down to money, Mandel continues, noting that “if the Big Ten winds up guaranteed four of the 16 Playoff berths, it would then have grounds to demand at least 25 percent of the revenue. Which is around double the slice it gets now. Here’s guessing revenue distribution will be the thorniest aspect of the negotiations to come.” (link)

Donors will pay up to $12.8M to help fund Arizona Men’s Basketball HC Tommy Lloyd’s five-year extension as well as incoming AD Desiree Reed-Francois’ annual $1.25M pay. According to documents filed with the Arizona Board of Regents, UA says donors will also cover up to $1M in retention bonuses to Reed-Francois and up to $1.5M of her reported $2.5M buyout at Missouri, though she is to “undertake best efforts to reduce or eliminate” that buyout. From the documents: “If any financial buyout is still owed following Reed-Francois’ best efforts, UArizona agrees it will contribute up to $1.5M toward any remaining buyout obligation of Reed-Francois to the University of Missouri.” The school also says former AD Dave Heeke’s $1.05M buyout will be funded by donors. In the third of a three-part conversation with the Waco Tribune-Herald’s Zach Smith, Baylor AD Mack Rhoades shares his thoughts on how the Big 12 will fit into the overall landscape moving forward: “I think the Big 12 will continue to be relevant and continue to have a spot when you think of highest level of college football and highest level of college athletics. Whether that remains a Power 4 or if that’s how [NCAA President Charlie] Baker describes this new NCAA Division I subdivision with the highest-resourced institutions. I like the Big 12 will continue to have its place.” He adds that Commissioner Brett Yormark is “extremely aggressive, and as things continue to change and evolve, I think we'll still be right in the thick of it along with the other three conferences.” Rhoades describes Baylor’s next big project as continuing to be nationally relevant “in the midst of this chaos and rapidly changing landscape” and says: “I think about the sustainability of NIL, it’s not going away. The new potential NCAA Division I subdivision. Scholarship limits increasing. How do you do that? All of the other deregulation. What happens if student-athletes become employees? That’s certainly on the table in and in the court systems. We want to be out in front when we think about all of those moving, changing pieces. (There’s) not a lot of clarity right now. So we're trying to figure out which ones we run out and which ones we wait and see for a little bit longer.” More from Rhoades. (link)

Missouri State AD Kyle Moats talks with the Springfield News-Leader’s Wyatt Wheeler about the Bears’ men’s basketball attendance struggles and says: "I feel like the people we have here, our staff, are good people that are working their tail off to try and get it done, trying to find the answers. It's not like we're sitting back twiddling our thumbs. I feel like the administration wants that to happen and supports it and I think that will continue." The president of MSU’s Bearpawcalypse student organization says he’s never met with Moats personally but has been in contact with representatives from LEARFIELD, and Moats notes: "If I thought that me being in every single meeting was going to get 500 kids there, I'd be there every single time…but I see where you could say 'administration doesn't have an interest.' But if it's that you have to be there in a meeting, we could have a lot of folks in that meeting. Whether or not that moves the needle, that's what I'm most worried about." As for his future in the position once President Clif Smart retires in June, Moats remarks: "I don't know if I need to sell myself. I think they'll do their due diligence and I'm sure they'll talk to people. I'm not one to do a whole lot of sales pitches. I just put my head down, work hard and do the right thing and either people will recognize it or won't recognize it. I've been on the other side of it where I've done pretty well and it doesn't make a difference. They just bring their own person in because they want to bring their own person in. I have no idea in this situation. All I can do is continue to do what I'm supposed to be doing." (link)

The Texas System Board of Regents has approved a $35M funding plan for UTSA’s basketball and volleyball training facility, with substantial completion targeted for August 2026. The project is set to be funded with $15M in bond proceeds, $10M in designated funds, and $10M in grant funding from Bexar County and City of San Antonio bonds. The two-story, 50K-square-foot facility, which would serve as home to the Roadrunners’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams, features practice courts, locker room space and coaching offices for each program, as well as shared strength and conditioning facilities. UTSA plans to repay the bond proceeds with ticket sales. (link)

Former NBA veteran/ESPN personality Kendrick Perkins and Edly Founder Chris Ricciardi have partnered to launch NILLY, an investment platform that helps student-athletes more quickly on their NIL earning potential. According to the venture’s press release, NILLY “acquires the NIL rights of student-athletes in exchange for upfront license payments and an ongoing revenue share, creating a financial opportunity for student-athletes that has never existed before. Earnings are then shared between student-athletes and investors. Offered in the form of a managed account strategy managed by Edly Advisors LLC, an SEC registered investment advisor, accredited investors can invest in portfolios comprising NIL licensing contracts for a variety of strategies. At launch, NILLY will offer investment opportunities focused on NCAA Division I football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and a strategy comprising Division I athletes across a variety of sports.” Ricciardi: “What we do is we look for players that are already committed to colleges, and specific college teams are able to underwrite what we believe their NIL rights are worth. Then we make those NIL rights available to investors. … The vast majority of the NIL rights percentage still remains with the athlete, but the investors get a chance to come along with that and get basically 25% of the NIL rights as they’re earned. We set it up for them on the platform and they're able to basically pick the strategy they want. So they could invest in a particular team’s NIL rights, they can invest in a sport – maybe they want women's basketball – or maybe they're just interested in participating in it for the general good.” (link, link)

Here is NCAA President Charlie Baker’s full quote regarding expansion of the NCAA Tournament, as expressed during his interview with ESPN yesterday: “Most of the people who follow college sports think that the NCAA tournament in basketball is perfect, so anything that is done to change it needs to be done with care and consideration. I certainly think there is an opportunity there to do more, to find a way to bring more teams into the tournament, and that's a conversation that the basketball committee is currently having. We may have more to say about that between now and the end of this year's tournament. I think expanding the tournament is about expanding access, I think that's a better way to think about it rather than using it as an opportunity to restrict access, especially given the fact that so many people believe that part of what makes the thing great is that everybody gets a chance to play." Missouri will be owed a $2.5M buyout for Tigers AD Desiree Reed-Francois’ departure to Arizona, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff. (link); ESPN’s Rece Davis and Pete Thamel discuss Reed-Francois’ decision to leave for Tucson, and both question the decision by the MU Board of Curators to establish an athletics oversight committee. Thamel goes on to note that since Mike Alden left, “Missouri had Mack Rhoades jump to Baylor after about a year – there were some extenuating circumstances there. Jim Sterk got fired, and it was a pretty underwhelming tenure although he did hire Eli Drinkwitz, and then Desireé Reed-Francois leaves after three years. So, at a certain point when you see the trendlines like that you say maybe the problem isn't with the ADs, maybe the problem is with the structure and how it's run there. And if you look at Arizona, it is a financial disaster right now, but if you want to come in for a fresh start and build, it’s a great opportunity. It’s at rock bottom, and so I really feel like if you don't feel welcome where you are, you go to somewhere where they're going to welcome you with open arms and let you build it back. … And if you look at Arizona right now, the financials are awful, but on the field and on the court you could argue things are as good as they’ve been in a while.” (link)

Colorado’s revenue via LEARFIELD increased 51% during Football HC Deion Sanders’ first season, according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Daniel Libit, who report the company is projecting to generate $8.3M in FY24, which includes Sanders’ first football season, up from $5.5M in FY23. They add: “The spike is good for LEARFIELD, but especially beneficial to Colorado under their current arrangement. Their contract stipulates that the school receives 60% of the first $5M of ‘adjusted gross revenue’ – total revenue minus some expenses – then 65% of everything over $5M. Last year, there was no AGR over $5M and Colorado pocketed $2.9M in rights fees. This year, the total AGR is $7.2M, so Colorado will see a chunk of money at the higher 65% share. CU is currently projected to receive $4.5M under the agreement in fiscal 2024, though not all the money has been collected.” CU recently extended its partnership with LEARFIELD for 10 years, and starting in FY25, the Buffs will receive 65% of the first $10M of AGR, then 70% of anything above that threshold. There are also guaranteed minimums, which start at $4M in year one and rise to $5.35M by FY35. (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham will not complain about the rigors of being a HC in the current landscape, telling AZ Sports: "You know how many people want my job? You know how many people want my assistants jobs and my analysts jobs? So, don’t complain about what we do. We’re blessed. I literally spent nine years of my life doing anything to become a coffee boy. So, don't give me the 'Oh, it's hard to be a coach right now.' Yeah, it's hard. Then quit. That’s how I look at it. You adapt, you adjust, and is it hard? Yes, but if you love it, you’re going to do it. Does it pull away from other things? Yes, but find a way to have life balance. Recruit the kids who understand that I’m not going to call you every single day because I’m going to go home to my kids and my wife. Find the balance that works for you, and it's very, very difficult because you never have to turn the switch off. You know, back in the day you used to have one phone call a week. Now you have unlimited texting, so every single day of the year, every minute, you can be working, and if you're not you, feel like you're being outworked. … There is never a spot that it says, ‘Oh, we can't text a kid,’ which means you're constantly working, and if you're not you're being outworked in your head, and I think for competitors that is the hardest part about college athletics.” (link)

+ Amid pushback from fans about playing a home football game at Lambeau Field – presumably against Wisconsin – next season, Northwestern has released a statement explaining it is “still exploring options for where the team will play next season. At this time, contracts with venues are still being finalized and we will share information with you as soon as possible." According to the Wildcat Report’s Matthew Shelton and Louie Vaccher, the team has just two game locations pretty much set, as the Wildcats will play Indiana on Oct. 5 at SeatGeek Stadium and host Ohio State at Wrigley Field on Nov. 16. They add: “Northwestern will play its home games this season at some combination of SeatGeek and Wrigley, for sure.” Guaranteed Rate, home of the Chicago White Sox, is “also an option, but not a likely one. Northwestern has an existing event and marketing partnership with Wrigley. … Northwestern may end up playing home games this season at four, possibly five different venues. The athletic department is still trying to piece together the scheduling puzzle. Fans are waiting to make plans.” (link)
