Henderson State selects Southeastern Oklahoma State Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Seth Dutton as its next AD, starting April 1. St. Edward’s AD Debbie Taylor will retire at the end of the academic year after 22 years leading the Hilltoppers. SEU President Montserrat Fuentes: "This is an exciting time for St. Edward's University, and we have a firm foundation in place to advance Athletics as a critical element of the university's strategic plan. Notre Dame College appears to have split the AD responsibilities left by former AD Scott Swain. Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA Emily Schwabenbauer will serve as AD for NCAA Compliance/SWA and Men’s Basketball AC/Director of Golf Duncan Williams will serve as AD for Facility and Community Advancement. @1QLeadership Question: Should a leader have a set process for making tough decisions?

We asked Keiko Price, Associate VP of Campus Life & Director of Athletics at Emory University, about making tough decisions while leading an athletics department. She answered on the topic of student-athlete accusations against coaches:

• Be present as much as possible
• Support the student-athletes and advocate for the coach
• Assess everyone involved to hear all sides
• Make the best possible and informed decision

Tennessee & Virginia v. NCAA: 

+ NCAA President Charlie Baker reacted to the NIL decision in Tennessee: “You’re talking about 95 percent of colleges that probably spend somewhere between ... $40 million and $5 million on college sports, and they lose money. They don’t have TV contracts and nobody can look at their income statements or balance sheets and conclude there would be a way for them to make money. [...] I think in the end, we are going to need Congress to do something. Because people will draw a lot of conclusions from court decisions. And then there will be new ones. [...] I think the most important thing here is let's deal with some of the issues around accountability and transparency and consumer protections first. And if we then want to have a conversation about other stuff, about how this should all work, especially if we get to the point where we give schools the ability to do more in this space, I'm all-in on that.” (link, link)

+ Outkick’s Chat Withrow asked Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti if he was ready to help reform all of college sports, now that he defeated the NCAA on NIL in his home state. Skrmetti: “We’re happy to talk with them if they want to start talking about ways to resolve this in the short run or the long run. We’re happy to keep litigating if that’s what it takes. We like our chances. But whatever happens, we are going to continue fighting to make sure that student-athletes have fair and clear rules that are going to let them enjoy the benefits of the sports that bring so much joy to everybody. + Some key notes from Sportico’s Michael McCann: “Unless the NCAA successfully appeals the trial judge’s order to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the injunction will remain in place for months—or possibly longer—depending on when a trial is held for Tennessee & Virginia v. NCAA. The order also restrains the NCAA from enforcing its Rule of Restitution (NCAA Bylaw 12.11.4.2) as applied to NIL activities. Under the rule, the NCAA can retroactively impose punishments if a player competes based on an injunction that is later vacated. By taking the Rule of Restitution off the boards, (Judge) Corker ensures (unless and until he is reversed by the Sixth Circuit) that athletes and schools relying on his order won’t later suffer a penalty if his injunction against the NIL-recruiting ban.” (link)

Fresno Pacific has broken ground on its new Baseball stadium, Daniel Martin Stadium, named after a $3M gift from the Daniel R. Martin Foundation and lead gift from Valley Iron, Inc. and the Briscoe family. The three-phase project will include covered seating for 700, new locker room, concession stand and press box. President André Stephens: “This facility promises to be much more than just a structure; it will stand as a beacon of opportunity, community and excellence for our baseball program and indeed for our entire university community. “It reflects our core values of leadership, service and excellence. It's about creating a space where our students can grow not only as athletes but as individuals prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.” The stadium will be unveiled to start the 2025 season. Alabama-Huntsville is adding a nutrition and mental health program, with a fueling station, nutrition education and “app-based daily assistant that provides student-athletes with effective tools to cope with stress.” AD Cade Smith: “How do we help our student-athletes have the best experience possible? The daily grind of trying to be a student, trying to be an athlete is not easy. Sometimes they’re going straight from the weight room to the classroom. No time to go to the cafeteria. […]  For young people and everyone else, I think we’re more aware of mental health concerns than we’ve ever been. […] We want to integrate this with campus resources. This is about providing resources for student-athletes to be able to take care of themselves. […] And the byproduct is we have better teams.” Funding for the program was partially supported by Bryant Bank. (link)

The NCAA Women's Executive Committee approved new weight classes for use in women's NCAA collegiate wrestling, beginning in the 2024-25 season. Most classifications will stay close to the same, but the heaviest three will face significant changes. The biggest adjustment is at 170 pounds. Any current wrestler in that category would move up or down 10 pounds. The heaviest category is 207 pounds. Full chart included. The NAIA will now put this slate of weight classes forth to its National Administrative Council in the first week of March for its approval. (link)
