Stephen F. Austin AD/incoming Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss several topics, including the unique value proposition of athletics within a university’s larger mission, about which he observes: “Athletics is the front porch of the institution but there’s a whole house behind that porch. You can have a house without a front porch but you can’t have a front porch without a house.” Ivey shares insight into navigating the values and expectations of permanent and interim university leaders, dives into the challenges of facilities planning and resource allocation during a time of presidential instability and discusses the importance of creating narratives around the academic outcomes of student-athletes. Ivey also talks about the process of garnering support from campus leaders: “What we've done as an enterprise is we've done a poor job of creating the narrative around the educational outcomes of what our student-athletes have on a daily basis. … The educational benefits of being a student athlete, I think, we have forgotten along the way. We've gotten caught up in everything else and we've done a poor job of communicating that aspect to campus, and if we could ever figure out a way to quantify that and be able to have dialogue or we can show campus the educational benefits and educational outcomes of being a student athlete, then I think we create that connection more with campus.” Full Q&A. Colorado State Interim AD John Weber talks about how his business experience will help him lead the department: “I’ve been the CEO of a company. I’ve been in the private equity space, I’ve been in the venture capital space. I understand business quite well, and when I look at the evolving landscape for collegiate athletics it mimics business more and more on any given day. I think it’s a great marriage between the two of us to make sure we're in a position to capitalize on what’s going to change as we go forward. We’ve got an opportunity to really set ourselves up for a tremendous amount of success.” Weber declined to specify whether he’ll seek the position full-time but adds: “We’re going to put a lot of effort in place to make sure that we are actually competitive at a lot of those levels, whether that be in competition, whether that be in fundraising, whether that be in progressive NIL support, we’re going to look at the changing landscape of collegiate athletics and use that to our strategic advantage as much as we possibly can.” (link)

Seton Hall Deputy AD for Revenue Generation, NIL & Strategic Initiatives Mike McBride says the Pirates’ success this men’s basketball season is leading to more interest among fans who want to support the team’s NIL efforts. “Engagement is through the roof compared to what it was before. Participation and donations obviously have increased.” St. John’s HC Rick Pitino and Georgetown HC Ed Cooley have both praised the Pirates’ success “without their NIL being exorbitant,” as Pitino put it. Cooley also suggested the program was behind on NIL, saying: “I hope they can keep [HC Shaheen Holloway] here.” Pirates AD Bryan Felt says that’s “an inaccurate and unfortunate narrative that’s out there – a narrative that is untrue. … We started with a bunch of donors putting up sizable dollars to build the foundation. We’ve seen people who were resistant who have now come aboard. Having more stakeholders in Onward Setonia has been incredibly helpful.” The team’s success, he continues, gives the collective “more of a platform to socialize it, promote it and get people to connect with it, because NIL is so much education and socialization so people understand its importance and its place in college athletics.” (link)

There are potential legal ramifications for court-storming, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who explains any individual “trampled or otherwise injured during a court-storming could file a negligence lawsuit against the arena, school, conference, NCAA and any other parties arguably responsible for stadium security. The core accusation would be that security was unreasonably lacking for the situation and that led to the injury. While game tickets usually contain waivers that attempt to extinguish potential legal claims for injuries, enforceability of those waivers can turn on whether the injuries were foreseeable and connected to the playing of the game.” Additionally, McCann notes ticket waivers don’t apply to players, coaches and staff. The incident involving Duke men’s basketball student-athlete Kyle Filipowski could also have ramifications if student-athletes become employees, as McCann points out players “could demand better working conditions as a condition of their employment. A union for college athletes could demand reforms that seriously punish schools that permit court storming. Stripping wins or taking away future home games would no doubt send a message.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde joins those calling for an end to court-storming following Duke men's hoops standout Kyle Filipowski’s injury on Saturday: “Yeah, they can produce unforgettable moments for fans and viral videos for the media. But they can clearly go wrong. Fans do not belong on the field or court, and giving them unchecked access in chaotic and emotionally charged situations is an abdication of responsibility by the home school. Don’t make excuses for them, shifting responsibility to the athletes and coaches. They’re supposed to be on the playing surface. It shouldn’t be incumbent upon them to safeguard themselves amid mayhem.” Forde suggests that “at bare minimum, a postgame countdown clock could be instituted to get both teams and the officials off of the floor or field. Maybe it’s 30 seconds in basketball and two minutes in football. But even then, and even with educating the fans on such a rule, good luck getting the fans not to jump the gun. … Ultimately, it’s time for leagues to reconsider the loss of a home game for schools that cannot adequately keep fans off of the playing surface. The only thing that would be a true disincentive is one that can lead to a material competitive disadvantage, and that would do it.” (link); A “power conference” AD tells Forde: “This would stop if the home team had to forfeit any game where the field/court was stormed. Draconian, but it would end the practice. If we truly wanted to change fan behavior, that would do it." (link)

ESPN anchor Chris Fowler pulls back the curtain on doing voice work for EA Sports’ College Football 25 and reveals: “Even the mundane plays, I’ve said into that microphone many, many different ways. A bunch of stuff you never see in a real game, I've described. You want to punt on second down? Try a 71-yard field goal? That's in the game, too. Along with the appropriate analysis of those decisions. Your quarterback throws five picks in the first quarter or five touchdowns, we got you covered there, too, in detail. … What I’ve seen of the game will blow people away.” (link)

Sportico’s Shoshy Ciment breaks down how Under Armour is progressing with its plan to turn around parts of the company, and Williams Trading analyst Sam Poser says: “We are slowly beginning to see small improvements, and expect to continue to see improvements in Under Armour’s product offerings, and better defined allocation and segmentation strategies. Those improvements, in our view, will lead to a stronger Under Armour brand, and position the company for a positive and profitable growth inflection in North America.” UBS analyst Jay Sole also shares an optimistic view: “We think the company has taken a number of actions aimed toward revamping product innovation and brand loyalty. We believe Under Armour will start to realize benefits from these strategic moves over the next 12 months.” (link)

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav commented on Spulu during last week’s earnings call, noting that there are “about 125M households in America and there’s more than 60M of those that are not in the traditional bundled cable ecosystem. And we see that with things like (our) Bleacher Report where we have 30M people, mostly under 30, that the overwhelming majority are not in the traditional cable universe, but they love sports. They’re on Bleacher and House of Highlights all day. And so we have a very rich target of over 60M people that love sports. And it’s a product that’s quite modern.” Zaslav also talked about the need to bundle streaming to resemble the cable model and explained there are two possible scenarios that could play out: One is a third party like Roku or Apple establishing a platform where all sports rights would be housed. The other involves content providers doing it themselves. “And I’ve always advocated that we should do it ourselves. And so we’re looking to do that domestically, we’re looking to do it outside the U.S. In some ways the sports venture is trying to meet that very need. That when you put our product together with… Fox’s product together with the ESPN product, it just has a much better, more fluid, more simple consumer experience. It’s not `Which channel is it on?’ It’s not `Where do I go? How do I go? Do I have it? Don’t I have it?’ It’s in one place. And I think more and more will be gravitating (in that direction).” (link)

Institute of Sports Humanities Director Ed Smith suggests businesses may be relying too much on process at the expense of creativity: “Decision-making is now expected to follow a definable process that is laid out in advance and according to tenets, as though all aspects of life must be shuffled towards the scientific method. This creeping scientism is bound up with a loss of confidence in the humanities: process feasts on the insecure longings of disciplines and domains that lack a ‘methodology.’ … As middle management has expanded exponentially, process is an endlessly useful ally. It creates work and fills hours, while also leveling the playing field against more talented rivals by boring them into submission.” Smith notes he is not anti-process, but “process, even when it’s helpful, cannot ever be sufficient. At best, it’s only one part of real-world problem-solving.” He goes on to observe that “with advancing AI, we know that human beings’ best chance of adding enduring value is to stay good at the most human bits – analogy, surprise connections, joining dots that aren’t obviously linked. Creativity. I distrust guides to ‘the creative process’ because a genuinely creative process is significantly unknowable. … But we should trust a little less in process and more in solitude. Think more, indulge our curiosity, naively follow the thread, protect freshness. Which is another way of saying that to arrive at better decisions, we might have to take on the hardest challenge of all: to live a bit better.” (link)

The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen observes that new Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois has served in 11 athletic departments in the past 27 years, adding: “She's done it all: compliance, student services, academics, finance, strategic projects, fund raising, damage control, overseeing football programs and men's basketball programs. If anything, she's a survivor.” Hansen points out Reed-Francois was hired in 2004 at Fresno State for perhaps her most challenging job, to “clean up a program under NCAA investigation for rules broken during basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian’s years. … No wonder Reed-Francois, a graduate of the UA College of Law, was agreeable to return to her alma mater. Compared to what Fresno State went through 20 years ago, Arizona's current financial challenges don't seem so daunting. … Reed-Francois' career has been two decades of crisis management.” Hansen also compares Missouri’s 2022-23 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup standing in its conference, “bottom-feeder territory” to Arizona’s success in the Pac-12 championship race the past 12 years, when the Cats took home titles in seven different sports, reached the Women’s Basketball Final Four and won a women’s golf national championship. Further, from Hansen: “Here's the killer statistic: A year ago, the UA led all Pac-12 schools in total attendance, roughly 785,000 in all sports, football included.” A bit more on her path back to Tucson. As you’ve probably already seen, Wake Forest’s Men’s Basketball victory over Duke ended with a court storming & an injured Blue Devil in sophomore standout Kyle Filipowski. Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer: “When are we going to ban courtstorming? When are we going to ban that? How many times does a player have to get into something where they get punched or they get pushed or they get taunted right in their face? It’s a dangerous thing. I don’t want that to take away from the game that Wake played because Wake played a big-time game… When I played, at least it was 10 seconds and then you could storm the court. Now, it’s the buzzer doesn’t even go off and they’re running off the floor.” Demon Deacons AD John Currie issued an apology and added, “Although our event management staff and security had rehearsed postgame procedures to protect the visiting team and officials, we clearly must do better. I appreciate the postgame comments of Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer and I am in complete agreement that something more must be done about the national phenomenon of court and field storming and Wake Forest looks forward to being a part of those conversations.” (link - video of incident, link - Scheyer, link - Currie)

A potential expansion to March Madness was discussed yesterday on ESPN College GameDay. ESPN’s Jay Bilas: “Never underestimate the NCAA’s capacity to do something stupid. If they did this, it would be profoundly stupid. If anyone says, ‘More teams need access to the tournament,’ every team has access to the tournament now, all you have to do is win your conference automatic bid against your peers. [...] It’s a National Championship event, you should have to do something hard to get in and if you think it’s too hard, then Division II is wide open. I just don’t understand this, why would you mess with this? [...] If this is just about money, then say so.” Lots more in the seven-minute segment, including Seth Greenberg’s plea for the sport to continue to be forward-thinking. (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban tells ESPN’s Chris Low he wants to stay involved & positively impact industry changes: “If my voice can bring about some meaningful change, I want to help any way I can, because I love the players, and I love college football. What we have now is not college football -- not college football as we know it. You hear somebody use the word 'student-athlete.' That doesn't exist. [...] I'm not really looking for a job, but I do know I'd like to impact college football the best way I can, whether it's being a spokesperson or anything else. Listen, I'm for the players. It's not that I'm not for the players. I want to see the players have a great quality of life and be able to create value for themselves. But we've gone to nobody talking about education, nobody talking about creating value for their future, to talking only about how much money can I make while I'm in college.” More. (link)

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast and says of the possibility of networks sublicensing the early-round College Football Playoff games from ESPN: “They’re going to want some of the good games, too. They don’t just want the first four because those games are going to be up against NFL competition probably, and they’d probably just rather stand pat unless they can get a shot at the semis and the finals.” Thompson also remarks that if he were Washington State President Kirk Schulz, he’d play every possible card in his deck because he has nothing to lose. “For him, he’s not going to get an auto-bid. So, 5+7 is actually better for him than 6+6. He's going to push to consider to still being a P5 in terms of money, and he's going to get that the next two years, there's no doubt… but for them, at this point, staying flexible and staying relevant is very important because there could be some more moves and they might get scooped up to to another conference. So, the last thing you want to do is burn a lot of bridges on the way out because you might have to cross those bridges again.” Thompson expects that “one or maybe two of the first four (opening round) games in the CFP playoffs might be behind a paywall,” explaining that “I just don’t know how they’re going to get to the dollar figure that they want to get to without making those first-round games a little more valuable than what they look like at face value. … There are going to be some chances and opportunities where the games might not be that good, so the broadcasters aren't going to write a huge check, but the streamers might.” Lots more. The Penn State Board of Trustees has approved a new compensation package for President Neeli Bendapudi. Bendapudi’s base salary will remain at $950K while her annual deferred compensation will increase by $255K to $555K per year. Trustees also approved an increase in her second five-year completion bonus payable in 2032 from $1.25M to $1.5M. She is already set to receive a $1.25M completion bonus in 2027. Board Subcommittee on Compensation Chair Mary Lee Schneider explains Bendapudi also will have an “evergreen” contract, “meaning each year with mutual agreement President Bendapudi will always have a five year contract.” (link)

Bradley extends its partnership with Collegiate Sports Connect to continue to enhance the Brave’s talent networking, identification, recruitment and acquisition efforts. Deputy AD Brad Chandler: “People are our greatest asset, and just as our coaches recruit the best young men and women to Bradley, we must recruit the best people to our athletics department. Collegiate Sports Connect is the way we're able to accomplish that.” (link)

The 25 announcers EA Sports will include in the College Football 25 game are all males. ESPN’s Holly Rowe and Molly McGrath aren’t having it. McGrath: “So exciting! I really hope @EASPORTSCollege included female broadcasters, as well. Women are a huge part of college football.” Rowe with a more direct approach: “How about including some women @EASPORTS 30 years on the college football sidelines.” (link)

The NCAA Women's Executive Committee approved new weight classes for use in women's NCAA collegiate wrestling, beginning in the 2024-25 season. Most classifications will stay close to the same, but the heaviest three will face significant changes. The biggest adjustment is at 170 pounds. Any current wrestler in that category would move up or down 10 pounds. The heaviest category is 207 pounds. Full chart included. The NAIA will now put this slate of weight classes forth to its National Administrative Council in the first week of March for its approval. (link)
