The MAC will add Massachusetts as a full-time member in all sports, including football, beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and Chris Vannini report that “Conference USA also had conversations with UMass about joining the conference, especially after announcing around Thanksgiving it would add Delaware in all sports. CUSA hopes to invite a 12th member this spring and Missouri State remains an option there with UMass now off the table.” (link); Meanwhile, the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland reports there “continues to be mutual interest between the MAC and Western Kentucky.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy chronicles Indiana’s investment in football, which was underscored by the Hoosiers spending $15.5M to buy out former HC Tom Allen’s contract and the addition of $2M to the AC pool for new HC Curt Cignetti. Portnoy: “The impetus for this philosophical shift in thinking in Bloomington is layered. The looming boogeyman, however, is the potential for a great divide in college football and the hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. … Indiana, for its efforts, isn’t waiting to find out where that line is drawn.” Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson: “The decision for us [to part ways with Allen and hire Cignetti] was really looking at, ‘What’s the trajectory of our program right now and where’s the trajectory of football in the Big Ten?’ With expansion and all that is happening in terms of football in the Big Ten, it became not ‘What is the cost of making the change?’; it was, ‘What is it going to cost us if we don’t make the change?’” Dolson also explains that during the search that landed Cignetti, the school reevaluated how it allocated resources, leading it to the aforementioned $2M bump to the FB AC pool. “The change [was] instead of just saying, ‘Hey, the old staff was $X million for everybody excluding the head coach. You just have to let us know what you want to do.’ We didn’t do it that way. We broke it down into buckets and said, ‘Here’s what we’ve got in these areas and let’s talk it through.’” IU has also more broadly coordinated NIL efforts, and Tyler Harris, executive director of the Hoosiers Connect and Hoosiers for Good collectives, says: “We’ve seen an uptick in support, whether that’s because IU is able to help push out the message now where they were limited in the past, or because people are really starting to realize, you know, this is just another way to support athletes.” More. As the USC-NLRB trial gets set to resume, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter tells On3’s Eric Prisbell he believes it’s “almost guaranteed the judge will declare the USC athletes are employees of the school. If you look at the Dartmouth decision, the factors the regional director focused on there are stronger in the USC case.” For Prisbell, the more interesting question is whether the NLRB will determine USC student-athletes are employees of the Pac-12 and/or NCAA. “The NLRB has jurisdiction only over private employers. But if the judge rules that the Pac-12 and NCAA are joint employers, then it could open the door for athletes at public schools to also be classified as employees, which would afford them the right to unionize and collectively bargain as well. It is possible for the judge to conclude the athletes are employees of USC but not the Pac-12 or NCAA. That decision could hinge on whether the judge finds the athletes are compensated by the conference and the NCAA, and how much control each exerts over the athletes. Because of the potential that the Pac-12 and NCAA are deemed joint employers, Winter views the USC decision as ‘potentially more important and more impactful’ than the Dartmouth decision in terms of its effect on the future model of college athletics.” (link)

As college athletes’ seemingly inexorable march towards employment continues, Sportico’s Michael McCann posits schools will face three choices: embrace, resist or cut. He also points out that “the timing couldn’t be worse for colleges. The college-athlete population in the U.S. is projected to ‘shrink dramatically beginning in 2025 and lasting until 2037’ due to declining birth rates.” That said, McCann notes it’s “worth considering why colleges ‘lose’ money on athletics. Some pay high salaries to coaches and athletic directors. Others invest in modernizing athletics facilities. Paying coaches less and spending less on facilities would presumably free up some money. … Even if those schools claim to be losing money on athletics, they’d privately admit net profit/loss calculations do not capture the transformative impact athletics can have on fundraising and enrollment.” For schools who will consider cutting sports in response to student-athletes becoming employees, McCann advises: “Any moves along those lines could trigger a bevy of legal consequences, but the school would be on stronger labor law grounds by cutting all programs instead of just a few. While labor law protects workers against partial closures (like closing one store in a chain) it can’t force a business to continue operations when it seeks a full closure.” More from McCann. (link)

With the NCAA Rules Committee expected to propose helmet comms legislation this week, NCAA Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw, who serves as the committee’s secretary-editor, tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd: "Especially at the FBS level there is a really big desire to really see if we can push this forward. We had all the FBS football administrators in, and we really talked through technology. There seems to be at least -- at those 10 FBS conferences – [that] desire to make this thing work. It's kind of maybe unprecedented." Big Ten VP of Football Operations AJ Edds adds: "We want this to be a single unified solution start to finish. Schools can determine, conferences can determine, if this is a priority. The feedback we had was extremely positive.” Shaw notes the “biggest issue of all with this is scope and scale. If we open this up, then are there going to be 130 [FBS] teams that want to do it. Do we have enough product that can get 130 teams covered?" Also from Shaw: "People think this was all generated because of current events. It clearly was not. It's been on the docket for years. … I don't know in Year 1 if we're going to eliminate signaling over time, [but] with cooperation from the conferences, this becomes potentially more doable." More from Dodd. (link)

The FCS Oversight Committee heard an update from the Football Recruiting Subgroup, which will continue to review the impact of the early National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing period on the recruiting calendar. The committee expressed support for the subgroup’s collaboration with the FBS Oversight Committee to “establish a calendar that coincides with potential changes to the early NLI signing period to alleviate the pressures that occur in the month of December. The subgroup will monitor the Collegiate Commissioners Association NLI Policy and Review Committee review of early football NLI signing dates. The subgroup will develop a recruiting calendar recommendation based on the Collegiate Commissioners Association’s decision about the timing of football’s early NLI signing period.” The committee also reaffirmed its support for increasing the preseason participant limit from 110 to 120 student-athletes for the 2023-24 academic year. Also, the committee “unanimously supported a narrow legislative change to the requirements for eligibility for single-sport conference voting to align the legislation with current practice. The current legislation requires a conference to conduct a full round-robin schedule to be eligible for voting rights. The FCSOC supported permitting a conference to satisfy the requirement with a schedule that includes a minimum of eight conference games for all institutions, while maintaining the option for full round-robin for smaller conferences. The FCSOC did not support the elimination of single-sport conference football voting rights at the DI Council level.” (link)

The Competition Oversight Committee discussed updates to the size of squad and travel party sizes and agreed the “current process and principles for squad and travel party sizes remain generally relevant. The committee agreed to conduct the review every four years moving forward and noted that sport committees could propose changes in a non-review year if there are significant changes in the sport, the championship or the sport’s playing rules. Per the committee’s request, staff provided a brief history of squad size development to help inform discussion, including a summary of the average number of roster members who participate in competition. COC members noted this to be a valuable metric, which should be used as a reference when determining appropriate squad size. The committee also confirmed that squad size positions should be matched with corresponding funded travel party positions.” The COC also approved the Women’s Bowling Committee’s request to host the 2025 championship at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas, approved 11 conferences for AQs in women’s rowing and approved a waiver for the Pac-12 to retain its AQ in wrestling with four members for the 2024-25 championships. Stephen F. Austin AD/incoming Louisiana Tech AD Ryan Ivey sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss several topics, including the unique value proposition of athletics within a university’s larger mission, about which he observes: “Athletics is the front porch of the institution but there’s a whole house behind that porch. You can have a house without a front porch but you can’t have a front porch without a house.” Ivey shares insight into navigating the values and expectations of permanent and interim university leaders, dives into the challenges of facilities planning and resource allocation during a time of presidential instability and discusses the importance of creating narratives around the academic outcomes of student-athletes. Ivey also talks about the process of garnering support from campus leaders: “What we've done as an enterprise is we've done a poor job of creating the narrative around the educational outcomes of what our student-athletes have on a daily basis. … The educational benefits of being a student athlete, I think, we have forgotten along the way. We've gotten caught up in everything else and we've done a poor job of communicating that aspect to campus, and if we could ever figure out a way to quantify that and be able to have dialogue or we can show campus the educational benefits and educational outcomes of being a student athlete, then I think we create that connection more with campus.” Full Q&A. Colorado State Interim AD John Weber talks about how his business experience will help him lead the department: “I’ve been the CEO of a company. I’ve been in the private equity space, I’ve been in the venture capital space. I understand business quite well, and when I look at the evolving landscape for collegiate athletics it mimics business more and more on any given day. I think it’s a great marriage between the two of us to make sure we're in a position to capitalize on what’s going to change as we go forward. We’ve got an opportunity to really set ourselves up for a tremendous amount of success.” Weber declined to specify whether he’ll seek the position full-time but adds: “We’re going to put a lot of effort in place to make sure that we are actually competitive at a lot of those levels, whether that be in competition, whether that be in fundraising, whether that be in progressive NIL support, we’re going to look at the changing landscape of collegiate athletics and use that to our strategic advantage as much as we possibly can.” (link)

Seton Hall Deputy AD for Revenue Generation, NIL & Strategic Initiatives Mike McBride says the Pirates’ success this men’s basketball season is leading to more interest among fans who want to support the team’s NIL efforts. “Engagement is through the roof compared to what it was before. Participation and donations obviously have increased.” St. John’s HC Rick Pitino and Georgetown HC Ed Cooley have both praised the Pirates’ success “without their NIL being exorbitant,” as Pitino put it. Cooley also suggested the program was behind on NIL, saying: “I hope they can keep [HC Shaheen Holloway] here.” Pirates AD Bryan Felt says that’s “an inaccurate and unfortunate narrative that’s out there – a narrative that is untrue. … We started with a bunch of donors putting up sizable dollars to build the foundation. We’ve seen people who were resistant who have now come aboard. Having more stakeholders in Onward Setonia has been incredibly helpful.” The team’s success, he continues, gives the collective “more of a platform to socialize it, promote it and get people to connect with it, because NIL is so much education and socialization so people understand its importance and its place in college athletics.” (link)

There are potential legal ramifications for court-storming, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who explains any individual “trampled or otherwise injured during a court-storming could file a negligence lawsuit against the arena, school, conference, NCAA and any other parties arguably responsible for stadium security. The core accusation would be that security was unreasonably lacking for the situation and that led to the injury. While game tickets usually contain waivers that attempt to extinguish potential legal claims for injuries, enforceability of those waivers can turn on whether the injuries were foreseeable and connected to the playing of the game.” Additionally, McCann notes ticket waivers don’t apply to players, coaches and staff. The incident involving Duke men’s basketball student-athlete Kyle Filipowski could also have ramifications if student-athletes become employees, as McCann points out players “could demand better working conditions as a condition of their employment. A union for college athletes could demand reforms that seriously punish schools that permit court storming. Stripping wins or taking away future home games would no doubt send a message.” (link)
|
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde joins those calling for an end to court-storming following Duke men's hoops standout Kyle Filipowski’s injury on Saturday: “Yeah, they can produce unforgettable moments for fans and viral videos for the media. But they can clearly go wrong. Fans do not belong on the field or court, and giving them unchecked access in chaotic and emotionally charged situations is an abdication of responsibility by the home school. Don’t make excuses for them, shifting responsibility to the athletes and coaches. They’re supposed to be on the playing surface. It shouldn’t be incumbent upon them to safeguard themselves amid mayhem.” Forde suggests that “at bare minimum, a postgame countdown clock could be instituted to get both teams and the officials off of the floor or field. Maybe it’s 30 seconds in basketball and two minutes in football. But even then, and even with educating the fans on such a rule, good luck getting the fans not to jump the gun. … Ultimately, it’s time for leagues to reconsider the loss of a home game for schools that cannot adequately keep fans off of the playing surface. The only thing that would be a true disincentive is one that can lead to a material competitive disadvantage, and that would do it.” (link); A “power conference” AD tells Forde: “This would stop if the home team had to forfeit any game where the field/court was stormed. Draconian, but it would end the practice. If we truly wanted to change fan behavior, that would do it." (link)

ESPN anchor Chris Fowler pulls back the curtain on doing voice work for EA Sports’ College Football 25 and reveals: “Even the mundane plays, I’ve said into that microphone many, many different ways. A bunch of stuff you never see in a real game, I've described. You want to punt on second down? Try a 71-yard field goal? That's in the game, too. Along with the appropriate analysis of those decisions. Your quarterback throws five picks in the first quarter or five touchdowns, we got you covered there, too, in detail. … What I’ve seen of the game will blow people away.” (link)

Sportico’s Shoshy Ciment breaks down how Under Armour is progressing with its plan to turn around parts of the company, and Williams Trading analyst Sam Poser says: “We are slowly beginning to see small improvements, and expect to continue to see improvements in Under Armour’s product offerings, and better defined allocation and segmentation strategies. Those improvements, in our view, will lead to a stronger Under Armour brand, and position the company for a positive and profitable growth inflection in North America.” UBS analyst Jay Sole also shares an optimistic view: “We think the company has taken a number of actions aimed toward revamping product innovation and brand loyalty. We believe Under Armour will start to realize benefits from these strategic moves over the next 12 months.” (link)

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav commented on Spulu during last week’s earnings call, noting that there are “about 125M households in America and there’s more than 60M of those that are not in the traditional bundled cable ecosystem. And we see that with things like (our) Bleacher Report where we have 30M people, mostly under 30, that the overwhelming majority are not in the traditional cable universe, but they love sports. They’re on Bleacher and House of Highlights all day. And so we have a very rich target of over 60M people that love sports. And it’s a product that’s quite modern.” Zaslav also talked about the need to bundle streaming to resemble the cable model and explained there are two possible scenarios that could play out: One is a third party like Roku or Apple establishing a platform where all sports rights would be housed. The other involves content providers doing it themselves. “And I’ve always advocated that we should do it ourselves. And so we’re looking to do that domestically, we’re looking to do it outside the U.S. In some ways the sports venture is trying to meet that very need. That when you put our product together with… Fox’s product together with the ESPN product, it just has a much better, more fluid, more simple consumer experience. It’s not `Which channel is it on?’ It’s not `Where do I go? How do I go? Do I have it? Don’t I have it?’ It’s in one place. And I think more and more will be gravitating (in that direction).” (link)

Institute of Sports Humanities Director Ed Smith suggests businesses may be relying too much on process at the expense of creativity: “Decision-making is now expected to follow a definable process that is laid out in advance and according to tenets, as though all aspects of life must be shuffled towards the scientific method. This creeping scientism is bound up with a loss of confidence in the humanities: process feasts on the insecure longings of disciplines and domains that lack a ‘methodology.’ … As middle management has expanded exponentially, process is an endlessly useful ally. It creates work and fills hours, while also leveling the playing field against more talented rivals by boring them into submission.” Smith notes he is not anti-process, but “process, even when it’s helpful, cannot ever be sufficient. At best, it’s only one part of real-world problem-solving.” He goes on to observe that “with advancing AI, we know that human beings’ best chance of adding enduring value is to stay good at the most human bits – analogy, surprise connections, joining dots that aren’t obviously linked. Creativity. I distrust guides to ‘the creative process’ because a genuinely creative process is significantly unknowable. … But we should trust a little less in process and more in solitude. Think more, indulge our curiosity, naively follow the thread, protect freshness. Which is another way of saying that to arrive at better decisions, we might have to take on the hardest challenge of all: to live a bit better.” (link)
