St. Augustine’s accreditation appeal with the SACSCOC has been denied, meaning the university’s accreditation has been removed. SAU has 10 days to request arbitration, which no institution has ever participated in with the accrediting body. Interim President Marcus Burgess: “We disagree with the decision made by SACSCOC and plan to appeal to a higher authority with evidence supporting the institution’s progress in resolving non-compliance. We will move quickly to file a lawsuit against SACSCOC seeking an injunction that, if granted, will allow Saint Augustine’s University to remain accredited with SACSCOC on Probation for Good Cause until the conclusion of litigation.” (link)

Postseason Updates:

+ The 540-student-athlete field for the Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships is set. Competition will begin next Friday, March 8 at Pittsburg State. (link)

+ The field is also set for the NCAA Skiing Championships, where 74 men and 74 women will compete at Steamboat Spring, Colorado March 6-9. (link)

+ The first ranked hoops regional rankings are live. On the Men’s Basketball side, Gannon, Minnesota State, St. Thomas Aquinas, Indianapolis, Nova Southeastern, West Texas A&M, Lander and Cal State San Bernardino top their respective regions. (link)

+ Gannon, Southern Nazarene, Assumption, Ashland, Texas Woman’s, Valdosta State, Catawba and Azusa Pacific lead their respective Women’s Basketball regions. (link)

Johnson C. Smith has opened its new weight room, as part of its multi-million dollar multipurpose athletic facility that also includes a football locker room. Funding for the project was provided by Red Ventures CEO Ric Elias who bought into the vision for JCSU. Football HC Maurice Flowers telling HBCU Gameday: “We had a couple of meetings (with Ric Elias Red Ventures) and he said, Hey, I like your vision. And he invested in us. The football field is Rick Elias, his vision for the program and the school, the weight room, the locker rooms, Ric Elias. Our turf fields, one of the better ones anywhere, you know, between one point to 1.4 and this entire building, about 1.2 to 1.4. And so you’re looking at this as an investment not just for this year, but for the years to come at JCSU. […] Now it’s who’s got the best locker rooms, who’s got the best weight rooms, who’s got the best fields, and who’s got the best academic support. And we can say that now when it comes to division II and HBCU, we’re going to be near the top when we talk about those areas.” (link)

With only four other college programs in the state, there just has not been enough opportunity for those athletes past high school and club. + The University of Minnesota System has named Michigan (DI) VP for Research and Innovation Rebecca Cunningham as its next system president, effective July 1. (link)

+ William Jewell President Elizabeth MacLeod Walls announces she is stepping down in the fall to accept the same role at Washington & Jefferson (DIII). (link)

+ Lawmakers in Mississippi are considering a bill that would close three public universities in the state. The legislation – Senate Bill 2726 – doesn’t specify which three, deferring that decision to the Institutions of Higher Learning, which oversees the state’s eight public universities. If the bill passes, IHL will have until June 30, 2025, to select them, with closure mandated by 2028. Of the eight schools the IHL oversees, one is DII (Delta State) and one is DIII, and three are DI HBCUs. (link); Delta State President Dan Ennis says the bill is not expected to move out of committee, adding: “What we really need to do is look at our resources and operate more efficiently through a downturn. We need to be careful with what we have in front of us, and, of course, preserve the institutions, because they are needed long term for economic development.” (link)
