New Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould tells JohnCanzano.com’s namesake that she’s instructed staff to not use the “Pac-2” moniker: “I don’t get mad, but I tell my team never to say that.” Gould on opportunities: “We have to be realistic and we need to spend our time on the options and scenarios that we think have the most likely success, but John, I don’t think anything is off the table. We have to stay open-minded to anything and everything that is out there and I owe that to these programs to not have any forgone conclusions about what’s the best.” As for how the league’s $255M “war chest” could be used: “The settlement money and the ‘war chest’ as you call it I think is really intended for different, long-term, more strategic uses. Yeah, a possible rebuild, realignment, there’s all kinds of things that money could be used for.” Also, what’s in the cards for the Pac-12 Networks assets? “We’re really trying to figure out long term how it can not only be a profitable business entity but also something we can leverage since it’s a one-of-a-kind facility at the A5 level.” (link)

Ohio AD Julie Cromer sat down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NCAA Convention in Phoenix, where she talks about the feasibility for Group of 5 departments to compensate student-athletes in the event they become employees, how her football coaching staff has approached the transfer portal while sustaining success and more. In the event student-athletes become employees, Cromer says: “I think what you have to do is be very connected to your institutional leadership, probably also your conference leadership, and understand what the philosophical underpinning will be at your organization and then follow that and plan for that. I have colleagues, we all have colleagues, who are very comfortable with moving into that space and talk about it and have ideas about it and ways that it would go. … I would say at a school like ours that seems very untenable, and so what we have to do is think about what are the elements and takeaways that people are really trying to achieve with employment and are there ways that we can move closer to that in a structure that works and allows education to be the center of the experience. Lots more in the full Q&A on Connect. (link)

During Friday’s Board of Regents meeting, Western Kentucky President Timothy Caboni when asked about the level of institutional financial support for athletics: “It doesn’t need to be athletics versus. We do lots of things here and we invest in a wide range of experiences and activities for our students. [...] If we are gonna do it [athletics], then we are gonna do it right. The same way we do academics right. We can do all of it, because that’s the kind of institution we are. So this ‘us versus them’ stuff, this disinvestment stuff, just stop it. I’m not talking to the people in this room. The people who need to hear it are probably listening, and I want them to hear that from me. I’m just tired of it.” (link)

Mountain West leaders are set to discuss revenue sharing at league meetings this spring & here’s San Diego State AD J.D. Wicker’s take: “I’m fine sharing revenue if we’re going to share it all. If we’re going to pay others for perceived recognition of what they built, yeah, we deserved more of what we generated last year. [...] We either share all the revenue equally, and there’s no $1.8 million extra for Boise State from TV. Or if it’s the claim that because Boise is who Boise is, they generate extra revenue for TV so they should get some of it, then we should pay those who generate the revenue (in other sports). I’m good either way. It’s either all equal or give it to the earners. Someone like Boise has to sit there and calculate, ‘Alright, do I benefit from this or not? Is this what’s best for the league?’” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana Softball is off to a 14-5 start & HC Rick Fremin joined D1.ticker/Coaches.wire’s Matt Roberts to talk about the impact of recruiting rule changes over the past few years, the transfer portal, the evolution of today’s student-athletes and its impact on coaching, and more. Fremin says the main difference between coaching student-athletes pre-social media versus now is the amount of distractions. Fremin notes today’s student-athletes are “showing up with a speed coach, a defensive coach, a strength coach, a hitting coach, so after the game they're reaching out to all of these people instead of their actual coaches. But these people may have not seen them play in eight months, so they're trying to give them something that they gave them in an air-conditioned, comfortable environment…where somebody typically is sitting on a bucket taking $55 to tell them how good they are. And it's not like that in the game, that's not reality.” Fremin goes on to outline problems with the travel ball model, including its lack of emphasis on fundamentals: “They play more than they practice. When they get to us they're going to do the very opposite. We don't play any more than two games in a day, they do the opposite of that. They all typically play. That's not reality. … The majority of players that are reporting to college campuses – I’m gonna go out and throw out a statistic I think 75% of them are damaged when they get into programs now.” Asked to clarify whether he means physically or mentally, Fremin responds: “Both.” Full Q&A. Iowa Women’s Basketball star Caitlin Clark will play her final regular season game today as the Hawkeyes host Ohio State for a tip that will be carried by Fox. Additionally, per Front Office Sports, “Fox will livestream her postgame Senior Night festivities across YouTube, TikTok, and FoxSports.com, as well as on the Fox Sports app, according to sources with direct knowledge of the strategy.” (link)

WNBA President Cathy Engelbert talks about Clark’s soon-to-be-arrival to the league: “This couldn’t have come at a better time. I keep calling it the confluence of huge momentum around the WNBA as it is today, generational players like Caitlin coming in from the NCAA, expansion, and media disruption. It’s all feeding our growth. [...] A generational player like Caitlin will help all of our players get more recognition, help our league get more value, and that goes from the patch on the uniform, to placement on the court, to a media ad buy. We need to have all those values go up, and that’s what’s going to happen here as people recognize the quality of this league, the quality of these players, and Caitlin being this national phenom leading that, it’s going to raise valuations across the board.” More from Sportico. Vox has joined the list of media companies vying for the rights to publish Sports Illustrated, according to Axios’ Sara Fischer, who notes that “RedBird IMI, a joint venture run by former CNN boss Jeff Zucker, also looked at Sports Illustrated but passed on the opportunity.” As for the layoffs at SI, a spokesperson for Simplify Inventions, the venture firm that said it planned to acquire a majority stake in the Arena Group, indicated that “most [employees] are still working — they received 60 days' notice.” What happens after that depends on the licensing and negotiations. (link)
|
Meanwhile, Arena Group, whose license to publish SI was revoked, has made a pitch to revive SI that includes the creation of an SI-branded TV channel. According to the New York Post’s Josh Kosman, Five-Hour Energy Founder Manoj Bhargava has proposed paying more than $15M a year in “licensing fees it had balked at paying Authentic Brand Group’s Jamie Salter to pull off the unusual pivot.” Kosman also reports Bhargava “hinted that he would retain some of the 82 unionized workers that are about to lose their jobs but that there isn’t enough money to keep marquee writers like Tom Verducci, Jon Wertheim, Chris Mannix, Greg Bishop and Pat Forde.” Bhargava earlier this month: “We looked at a different path and we looked at the cost structure. We just couldn’t afford these great journalists. Those days when people are paying for those [great articles] are not here anymore.” (link)

SI’s financial struggles notwithstanding, Authentic Brands CEO Jamie Salter threw an SI-branded party in Las Vegas the night before the Super Bowl with guests including Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and others. According to Salter, the party set a record for the most money generated at a nightclub party in Las Vegas history, and the Washington Post’s Ben Strauss reports: “The parties weren’t Salter’s only Super Bowl headlines. He and [Shaquille] O’Neal gave Taylor Swift a jewel-encrusted football-shaped Judith Leiber purse — from another of Authentic’s brands, naturally — and visited her suite at Allegiant Stadium, where they snapped a photo with the pop star. Salter: “It went viral!” Asked if the proceeds from the parties or the live events get funneled to the media side of the business, Salter said they did not. Authentic Executive Vice Chairman for Tactical Ops Daniel Dienst, who tells the Post the party turned a profit of at least several million dollars, explains the bifurcation was in part to protect SI’s journalism. “We would never call an editor, a journalist or even know how to find the newsroom. Without that editorial independence, the brand is dead. Salter adds that SI is central to Authentic’s mission: That’s the mouthpiece to the brand. It’s not as critically important from the financial side, but what we put out there from journalism [is the] core. If you took the shoes out of Reebok, I’m not sure Reebok would be Reebok anymore.” More from Strauss. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Can the Faculty Athletics Representative's (FAR) role overlap with their research and professorial responsibilities?
As a Faculty Athletics Representative at Texas Tech, Professor Brian Shannon is responsible for advocating for student-athlete welfare. While his primary teaching responsibility is contract law, he focuses his policy and research work on mental health law, an area he has been researching for a lifetime due to his family experience with mental illness.
Professor Shannon explains that mental illness patients often get caught in the criminal justice system without receiving treatment. He also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between having a mental illness and dealing with mental health challenges. As mental health is a top issue faced by NCAA student-athletes, the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices are continuously updated to provide support. Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts

Sportico’s Michael McCann & Daniel Libit report in follow-up to the NCAA’s memo yesterday that it will “pause and not begin investigations” connected to NIL: “(NCAA President Charlie) Baker had no real choice but to pause enforcement unless the NCAA were to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.” Brown AVP for Athletics, Governance & Recreation/SWA & President of the National Association for Athletics Compliance Shoshanna Engle Lewis: “Much like the environment immediately following the first iteration of the interim NIL policy in 2021, campus personnel, including compliance professionals, must use the best information available to advise and assess risk, both for institutions and individual student-athletes. While we don’t have clarity on when exactly this will play out, we are able to utilize today’s information to make a more informed risk assessment.” Headlining attorney Tom Mars: “First, it seems clear the NCAA is not going to waste more money appealing a decision that has no chance of being overturned. Second, considering that Judge Corker has telegraphed how he thinks the Tennessee case will end, it’s also sensible that the D-I Board basically directed the enforcement staff to stop breaking the law.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel writes on the future of the NCAA Committee on Infractions amid a landscape of constant rule changes & legal challenges. Northern Colorado President Emerita & COI Chair Kay Norton: “Our coaches want rules, and there's going to have to be a body that enforces those rules regardless of if it's at a conference level or at the NCAA level. So I don't see that changing ever in college athletics. There'll be some set of rules. If we didn't exist they'd have to invent us.” Missouri Valley Conference Deputy Commissioner Jill Redmond: “I would say 'no' to having enough in our arsenal as an association. We don't have subpoena power, so in some circumstances we don't know the full set of facts, and then it's hard to [figure] what is the right punishment? You've got student athletes that I would say accept benefits and do things that they know are not appropriate, and they know that there are consequences, but we don't want to punish a team because the team also has innocent student athletes. You've got programs that don't follow the rules, but then they also don't want to face those consequences. But what do we do for the programs that are compliant? To me, it's nearly impossible to issue a penalty and not somehow impact somebody in a disparate way when they didn't do anything wrong.” More. (link)

"Automatic first-round byes for the Big Ten and SEC is like the NFL saying the Cowboys get a first-round bye since they have more fans than the Bengals. How preposterous is that?” That’s TCU Football HC Sonny Dykes on the current 14-team College Football Playoff model that would include the conference champions from the SEC and Big Ten getting the only two byes. ESPN’s Dave Wilson and Heather Dinich get additional feedback from coaches in the ACC and Big 12, none of whom agree with the proposed idea. NC State HC Dave Doeren: “The champions from each of those four deserve to be in, and I agree with that. ... After the four champions, then let those teams that have earned that over the course of their season with strength of schedule, their ranking, quality wins and all that be what matters.” Oklahoma State HC Mike Gundy: “We need to let the teams decide it on the field and reward those who are most deserving.” (link)

As the Tennessee-Virginia decision reverberates nationally about third-parties’ ability to communicate with prospects about NIL opportunities, other pressing NIL-related scenarios continue surfacing on campus when it comes to student-athletes and their healthcare. MB Sports Founder/CCH+A Senior Advisor Matt Banker, U.S. Council for Athletes' Health President & CEO Dr. James Borchers, M.D.; and CCH+A attorneys Connor Glass and James Nussbaum pen an article examining the intersection of NIL and healthcare. The group points out that student-athletes who have engaged in NIL opportunities promoting or endorsing a physician, a hospital system, a clinic, a medical equipment supplier, or a nutritional supplement manufacturer may find themselves seeking care, medical advice, second opinions, and/or free products or services from individuals, companies, and organizations that operate in healthcare. This is where some of the potential complexities begin to surface. The co-authors noted NIL activities invite new dynamics to a student-athlete’s medical management and how those NIL pursuits may eventually intersect with a university’s sports medicine policies, state laws, and/or other existing NCAA rules not impacted by recent court decisions such as the NCAA’s banned substance list. The co-authors noted NIL activities can lead to a student-athlete insisting on seeking a second opinion from an outside healthcare provider the student-athlete is endorsing through use of their NIL; the potential for disparities in treatment suggested by the school’s medical staff and the NIL-endorsed outside healthcare provider; and the student-athlete endorsing a supplement that may include a substance banned by the NCAA. Lots more. (link)

That agreement includes a non-disclosure clause, those sources said. Sanderson’s departure follows a Dec. 7 confrontation with Michigan head coach Juwan Howard that resulted in Sanderson no longer working with the men’s basketball program. Siena Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Angie Jabir sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2024 NCAA Convention and shares how she balances priorities as a sport administrator, NCAA committee member and senior leader within her department. Jabir also reflects on her early transition from coach to administrator while at Dayton, when she learned the importance of sport oversight. On that topic, Jabir explains: “You have to become a subject area expert in the sports you oversee. … There’s nothing more frustrating for a coach to be sitting with their administrator and feel like either you’re not asking the right questions, you don’t have a baseline understanding of their sport.” Jabir and Brown also break down the value of an “inbox zero” approach and how organization and communication are the keys to balancing multiple responsibilities in her primary role and an NCAA committee member: “I pride myself on having a small inbox, so I try to frequently check in with the folks back home and also take advantage of this opportunity to be here with colleagues” from around the country. “I think being organized and being intentional with your time, but also making sure that you're communicating you're still accessible even when I'm in Phoenix I'm still accessible to the coaches back at Siena.” Full interview on ADU. The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman breaks down the financial components of Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark’s decision to turn pro, noting that while it may seem “from a distance” like Clark could make more by staying in college, the reality is more nuanced. For instance, while the rookie salary for a WNBA player drafted in the top four is $76K, Clark could make up to $250K per year as a marketing ambassador for the league, up to $100K for team marketing deals and other bonuses for winning league awards. Clark can also earn more from sponsorships in the WNBA. Bachman also points out that “Clark’s top sponsors—Gatorade, Hy-Vee and State Farm—told The Wall Street Journal they’ll maintain their partnerships with Clark into the pros. And she’s certain to add sponsors when she goes to the WNBA.” On top of that, Clark is likely to field bids for shoe deals worth upwards of $3M per year. BCE Senior Advisor Matt Powell: “She is a once-in-a-generation player. I think this is an opportunity for brands to really get after the women’s side of the business, which they really continue to fail at.” More from Bachman. (link)

The IRS will begin auditing dozens of companies over the personal use of corporate jets by executives and other wealthy travelers. According to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, the agency will start with three to four dozen audits of large corporations and partnerships with audits of high-income individuals likely to follow. “These aircraft audits will help ensure that high-income groups aren’t flying under the radar. What we believe is happening is there’s not enough robust record-keeping going on, and there is systemic overstating of these business deductions.” The Wall Street Journal’s Ashlea Ebeling and Theo Francis report the audits will “span multinational corporations, domestic corporations, and complex partnerships across a diverse set of industries, focusing on whether they overstated deductions. Then, once the IRS gets a better understanding of the issue, the next wave of audits would be on individuals who aren’t reporting personal trips as income.” It is unclear whether higher ed and/or athletic departments will be included in the audits.
