Notre Dame College will close at the end of the semester after over a century, citing “declining enrollment, a shrinking pool of college-aged students, rising costs and significant debt.” Board of Trustees Chair Terri Bradford Eason: “Throughout this long process, we evaluated every possible option to continue the mission of Notre Dame College. Our primary focus has been to ensure our students can successfully continue their education, graduate, and – in the tradition of the Sisters of Notre Dame – live a life of personal, professional and global responsibility.” NDC has signed teach-out agreements with nine institutions including Lake Erie, Mercyhurst, Ursuline and Walsh. From the latest DII Championships Committee meeting, the group is asking the DII Strategic Planning and Finance Committee to increase per diem sooner than currently scheduled in 2027-28, pointing to DIII increasing its per diem to $125 this year, which is above DII’s current per diem, and continually increase it each year through ‘27-’28 and to consider whether he next triennial budget will allow for Football Championship expansion. Championships Committee has recommended the DII Management Council grant oversight of the minimum sport sponsorship required for championships to Champs, as a lack of clarity leaves the responsibility with the DII Committee for Legislative Relief. With the ESPN media rights deal starting next year, the WorldWide Leader has “the rights to produce and distribute other rounds of those championships in addition to the football championship and that those rights revert to the host institutions if ESPN declines.” More from Championships Committee: (link)

+ Approved an access ratio model for Field Hockey that will see the 2024 championship expand from six to eight teams with three AQ bids.

+ Adjusted the AQ deadline for Men’s and Women’s Golf to provide two extra days to allow for more time for student-athlete recovery and committees to discuss at-large selections and evaluate cost-effective travel logistics, starting in 2025.

+ Require DII Volleyball regional sites to have a challenge review system with at least two cameras, effective with the 2025 championship. All costs would be absorbed by host institutions.

+ Adjusted the minimum participants requirements for championship selection in Swimming and Diving and Track and Field.

+ Asked the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committees to “review options to reduce their brackets to be in line with the access ratio (4.25 to 6) or provide rationale for why doing so would not be in their sport’s best interests.”

The Football Rules Committee is proposing the addition of sideline tablets for in-game video, a two-minute warning timeout at the end of each half, allowing all conferences the option of a replay review system and more. Further, the committee is proposing stronger penalties for uniform violations which would see a player have to sit out at least one play for a first violation and all subsequent uniform violations by a team result in a charged timeout or five-yard penalty once no timeouts remain. All proposals are pending Playing Rules Oversight Panel approval next month. (link)

The North Carolina System Board of Governors has formally approved a policy change that will grant it authority over conference realignment moves among system schools. The change requires state universities to now seek approval from the system president before switching conferences. As part of the approval process, campus chancellors must provide to the president “advance notice” of the move, as well as a “financial plan” associated with it. If the president approves the plan, he or she must notify the UNC Board of Governors, which could then bring the proposal to a vote. If the board rejected it, the school would have to submit a new financial plan, restarting the approval process. (link)
