Antelope Valley has been ordered to close by this Friday, according to an emergency decision by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. The bureau states that the institution is not financially sound, has insufficient administration and lacks sufficient facilities and is ordered to cease all instruction, degree programs, and enrollment of and collection of money from new students. More from the decision: "These circumstances require immediate action by the Bureau to protect students, prevent misrepresentations to the public, and prevent the loss of public funds or monies paid by students." (link); As for where this leaves athletics right now, Cal Pac Commissioner Don Ott tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit, there is precedent for the hoops teams to continue playing without a school, stating it is “likely a formality, but an important one.” The Men’s Basketball team won the conference tournament last night, with the Women’s Basketball squad to play for their conference title tonight. Interim President Tim Campagna adding: “We are still working with state agencies and accrediting agencies to try and keep these guys active.” (link)

The Dartmouth (NCAA DI) men’s basketball team voted in favor of unionization by a vote of 13-2. Big Green student-athletes Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil: “Today is a big day for our team. We stuck together all season and won this election. It is self-evident that we, as students, can also be both campus workers and union members. … It’s time for the age of amateurism to end." (link, link); Sportico’s Michael McCann points out that “preferential admissions was one reason cited by NLRB regional director Laura Sacks in determining Dartmouth basketball players are employees within the meaning of labor law. Colleges that do the same for their athletes should be mindful of that.” Sacks wrote in her ruling that even though Dartmouth asserts players are admitted on the strength of their academic records, “the record reveals that Dartmouth first makes contact with the players as high school students because of their basketball abilities. The coaching staff is allotted a certain number of highly coveted admission spots for players they scout based upon their basketball skills and encourages players to matriculate to Dartmouth rather than at a school which might offer them an athletic scholarship because of the lifelong benefits that accrue to an alumnus of an Ivy League institution.” (link)

As a Faculty Athletics Representative at Texas Tech, Professor Brian Shannon is responsible for advocating for student-athlete welfare. While his primary teaching responsibility is contract law, he focuses his policy and research work on mental health law, an area he has been researching for a lifetime due to his family experience with mental illness.

Professor Shannon explains that mental illness patients often get caught in the criminal justice system without receiving treatment. He also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between having a mental illness and dealing with mental health challenges. The NAIA partners with GoRout to become the Official Coach-to-Player Communication System for the next three years.
