Alabama AD Greg Byrne tells Yea Alabama Director of Content Aaron Suttles he “doesn’t want to be the AD anywhere but Alabama,” adding: “Regina and I have felt genuinely supported by President Bell, our trustees, coaches, staff and fan base since the day we arrived seven years ago. We are excited about our future." (link)

ESPN’s Chris Low offers a highly detailed look behind the scenes of Alabama’s transition from Football HC Nick Saban to new HC Kalen DeBoer and notes Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne promised the team he would have a new coach in place within 72 hours. Byrne: "It ended up being 49. I thought I would beat the 72-hour window but wanted to give myself some padding.” Byrne, however, did have more time to prepare, at least mentally, as Low reports Saban informed the AD following the 2022 season that he was nearing the end of his coaching career. Byrne had his staff research the college head-coaching hires over the past 25 years from the winningest 25 programs during that span. “Part of what I was trying to understand is what were the analytics, and our studies showed that 75% of the time you're basically hiring a Group of 5 head coach, Power 5 coordinator or NFL coordinator. That's not necessarily a negative, but when it comes to the theory that you're going to hire just whoever you want, the percentages don't support that." While Saban has made clear that NIL and the transfer portal weren’t the reasons he retired, he says: “I thought we could have a hell of a team next year, and then maybe 70 or 80% of the players you talk to, all they want to know is two things: What assurances do I have that I'm going to play because they're thinking about transferring, and how much are you going to pay me? … So I'm saying to myself, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore, that the goals and aspirations are just different and that it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's bad. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that's never been what we were all about, and it's not why we had success through the years." Saban also says he was disappointed in his players’ reactions after losing to Michigan in the Rose Bowl: “You gotta win with class. You gotta lose with class. We had our opportunities to win the game and we didn't do it, and then showing your ass and being frustrated and throwing helmets and doing that stuff…that's not who we are and what we've promoted in our program." Lots more from Byrne, Saban, DeBoer and others. (link)

More from Ole Miss AD Keith Carter amid growing talk about a potential split involving the SEC and Big Ten and everyone else, Carter acknowledges he does believe it’s inevitable, at least in football. “I don’t know that it’s imminent. I don't know that it's going to happen next year or the year after, but I just I feel like at some point there has to be a split in order to really make everyone feel like they can still compete. … I just feel like there's a group that’s a little bit lower that it would be good for them to have their own level, you know, and maybe compete for a national championship with that group because it's just hard when the budgets are what they are and the resources are what they are. It’s just hard for everyone to compete, that's for sure.” (link)

The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports the college football December signing period “will move up to the Wednesday before conference championship games. It'll be three days. This was officially approved by the CCA today. … Decision on adding a summer signing period has been delayed to June.” Also from Auerbach: “The summer signing date — that would begin in June 2025 — has been tabled until this June so that it can presented in conjunction with adjusted recruiting calendars.” (link)

The NCAA announces a new corporate partnership that makes GEICO its official home and auto insurance partner. The partnership includes all 90 NCAA men's and women's championships beginning with this year’s March Madness. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt: "We are thrilled to welcome GEICO back to the NCAA Corporate Champion and Partner Program. GEICO's commitment to supporting NCAA championships and student-athletes while engaging creatively with millions of zealous college sports fans is appreciated and elevates the championship experience." The Oregonian’s James Crepea shares more from Oregon’s response to a Title IX lawsuit filed by several women’s beach volleyball and rowing student-athletes. UO’s outside counsel, Perkins Coie LLC, argues: “Plaintiffs fail to allege plausible facts to show that, on balance, female varsity student athletes receive unequitable treatment and benefits compared to male varsity student athletes department-wide. Notably, Plaintiffs’ Complaint refers only to beach volleyball and football, two very different sports, while omitting that the University’s facilities and equipment for women’s track and field, golf, softball, and basketball are acknowledged nationally as some of the finest in the country. … The University admits that none of the beach volleyball Plaintiffs received athletic financial aid, although they did receive numerous other benefits including free meals, snacks, equipment, travel, team building events, strength, conditioning and medical services, academic support, and the Alston payment if eligible — at levels that are likely greater than other Power-Five institutions. Prior to the filing of this lawsuit, the University allocated six scholarships to the women’s beach volleyball team for use in recruitment in the upcoming years.” (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin reaffirms his position that the current system is a “disaster” while acknowledging he’s neither complaining nor refraining from working within it. He tells On3’s Andy Staples: “It just probably sounds strange to a lot of people for me to say the disaster when we’re out there — some would say — maximizing it as well as you can and as well as anybody. But to me, that tells you how much of a disaster it is. Even though it benefits us, I’m still telling you it’s a disaster even though it benefits us at Ole Miss a lot.” Asked how he would fix the system, Kiffin says: “I would get some structure around it to make [student-athletes] employees so they have real contracts that everyone can see. So you know what the market and people can’t say ‘I have this’ or ‘I’m making this.’ Then there would be revenue sharing involved, so it would be more equal what they’re getting. And then there would be a cap.” That cap could vary by conference, Kiffin adds, “so at least there’s some level playing field.” Additionally, Kiffin says he would install as a lieutenant to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey someone intimately familiar with the inner workings of recruiting at the grassroots level in order to identify the pitfalls of proposed rules and shine a light on how things really work. “They have these committees. They have these ADs. They have all these meetings. But they don’t go to the streets to find out what’s really happening.” (link)

Endeavor/TKO President Mark Shapiro asserts the ESPN/Fox/Warner Bros. Discovery sports super streamer is a “big nothing, that's what it is. It’s a big nothing. It’s just another bundle out there. Who is going to pay $40, $50, $60 for half the NFL package?” (link); Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand submits that “what has been lost in ESPN’s involvement in the joint venture is their goal: It is attempting to make its services available in as many places as possible so its overall subscriber numbers start to go up again.” However, Sports TV Ratings argues that the “idea of ever increasing subscriber numbers again in an era of virtually unlimited entertainment/boredom avoidance options seems pretty goofy. I'd argue that what's been lost is how much smarter Fox has been about this than the others. How much? SO SO Much…” (link)

More from Dartmouth’s NLRB appeal, as Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out the school argues that international athletes will not be able to compete in college sports if the employment ruling is upheld. At least 20% of the Dartmouth team is made up of international athletes. The appeal also accuses NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks of creating a “new definition of ‘employee’ that not only exceeded her authority but promises to have significant labor and public policy implications.” (link)

Ole Miss AD Keith Carter joins SportsTalk Mississippi to discuss several topics, including renovations to Vaught Hemingway Stadium. He notes the campaign was launched just prior to the advent of NIL, “and when we saw kind of where the landscape was going, we decided, you know, that's a huge project. That was a big part of the campaign, going to be probably close to $300M by the time it was all said and done to do that west side. We still have it, we know right where it is on the shelf, we're going to come back to it someday. It’s a project that we feel like is important, but we're just not in a place to do that right now until we find out where this college athletics landscape is going to land eventually.” Carter also says he could see the several lawsuits facing the NCAA merging into one bigger lawsuit that could potentially be settled more easily. “I would love to see it settled before it goes to trial because I think if you go to trial, that's not good for anybody. I certainly don't think it's good for our side for sure.” Rather than a solution coming via Congress, Carter believes college athletics will “get to closer to a finish line on this really through the litigation and the courts. I think that's what's going to push it.” A congressional solution, Carter notes, would likely come with some form of federal oversight. “You can’t really have your cake and eat it too. You feel like you might need some help from Congress on a few of the matters and a few of the items, but at the end of the day I’m not sure you want them running your enterprise and I’m not sure you can get one without the other. TCU AD Jeremiah Donati shares his excitement about the snow room that will be included in the Simpson Family Restoration and Wellness Center: “This technology they found over in Europe, and my team started laughing, because once I saw that I was like, ‘We have got to have that.’ If you think about [former coach] Dutch Meyer’s immortal words, ‘Fight 'em till hell freezes over, then fight 'em on the ice.’ This was perfect. I've never seen anything so freaking perfect.” Of the wellness center project itself, Donati says: “Every single one of our student athletes will be positively impacted. And that's a great thing, because there's very few projects where you can do that.” (link)

Former Pac-12 Commissioner “George Kliavkoff’s catastrophic 973-day tenure atop the Pac-12 ended late last week with a multi-million settlement, zero signs of regret and no issuance of public comment,” The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner observes, adding: “The radio silence in the final chapter of his tenure stands in stark contrast to the grandiose posturing in the initial phase of the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations, when Kliavkoff boasted of ‘shopping’ for Big 12 schools and eventually ‘catching’ the Big Ten in annual revenue.” Wilner acknowledges that Kliavkoff’s settlement may preclude him from discussing details, “but Kliavkoff also has refrained over the past six months from offering any public expression of remorse or accountability. That makes perfect sense because, according to multiple sources who have spoken to Kliavkoff recently, he takes no responsibility for the demise of the 109-year-old conference. Instead, sources said, Kliavkoff blames the collapse entirely on the presidents’ poor leadership, the difficult circumstances he inherited and the schools’ refusal to accept the deal placed before them.” Wilner acknowledges the blame for the Pac-12's demise cannot all be laid at Kliavkoff’s feet, but “any suggestion that Kliavkoff bears no responsibility is, of course, ludicrous. … Maybe Kliavkoff will tell his side in a documentary after his non-disclosure agreement ends — and for which he likely will be compensated handsomely. For now, he exits the scene in silence, with ash and ruin in his wake.” (link)

Two House Committee on Education and the Workforce subcommittees – the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee and the Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee – have scheduled a legislative hearing for March 12, titled “Safeguarding student-athletes from NLRB misclassification,” according to On3’s Pete Nakos. U.S. Congressman Brendan Boyle: “Rather than having yet another hearing on NIL or this, maybe we should hold a hearing on what’s really hurting college football: the tremendous greed on the part of a few programs and conferences that is threatening to ruin the sport.” (link)

Michigan State has received a $10M gift from Joan Secchia to support the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Additional enhancements and upgrades using the funds will be determined later.” (link)

Iowa State has selected Goldenrod to spearhead the next phase of the CyTown project. Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard: “We thought if anybody took it on, it might be a local developer. And we had two locals that wanted to do it. But in the end, Goldenrod just had too much experience. Their capitalization was really important, and their experience working in higher education. Their proximity in Omaha, they've done [work at] the University of Nebraska, they've done University Nebraska-Omaha. It kind of made it feel like they were local, even though they're a regional/national developer.” (link)

Several athletic departments at North Carolina public universities will receive a boost once sports betting goes live on Monday thanks to a provision in the law that distributes some of the tax revenue their way. In total, the state allocated $300K for each of the 13 colleges, all of which are public regionals and/or HBCUs (North Carolina and NC State are not among those who receive funding). Additionally, some other sums are distributed, including an allotment to a state agency to run addiction-treatment programs, 20% of the remaining tax revenue will be divided equally among the 13 schools. UNC Asheville AD Janet Cone wouldn’t speculate on how much the department would get but said: “I’m excited no matter how much it is.” The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Nell Gluckman reports the state legislature’s Fiscal Research Division estimates North Carolina will bring in $64.6M in tax revenue after its first fiscal year. Four years out, the division estimated revenue would reach $100.6M, meaning each athletic department would get $1.2M in the first year and $1.7M four years later. While the revenue will benefit the schools, Cone emphasizes the importance of educating student-athletes themselves about the consequences of gambling. To that end, the Bulldogs have partnered with RealResponse and U.S. Integrity. Cone: “Education is a big part of this.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand: “This morning, I was chatting with a top executive as we tried to recall the last athlete to have this sort of impact on their entire sport (as Iowa’s Caitlin Clark). The best we could come up with was…Tiger Woods.” In fact, Clark has been so good for ratings that, according to Ourand, “Fox executives contemplated reaching out to other networks to see if they could come up with an enticing NIL offer that would convince her to stay in the college ranks for one more season. Alas, talks never materialized (nobody ever approached Clark).” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports that “Legends and Blueprint Sports (BPSE) will soon unveil a strategic partnership designed to arm NIL collectives and Power 5 schools with added pro operational capacities, service offerings and NIL industry expertise.” BPSE CEO Rob Sine: “There are three real hallmarks of Blueprint in this industry. One is the front-end membership technology. [Legends will] be working with us on merchandising opportunities, event-creation opportunities for members to continue to drive that base. The second dimension is the ground game, really making sure that we have the best people in the industry representing the student athletes and the collectives, and, by extension, the universities in the space of helping us promote from an HR standpoint … And then last is really the back-end technology piece and continuing to make sure that we have the best technology to run all the student-athlete engagements, contracting discussions.” (link)

The BIG EAST is launching the Legends Recognition Program through which each of the 11 member schools was tasked with selecting a former prominent coach or player from both their men’s and women’s basketball programs to be honored at the upcoming conference tournaments. The program will be conducted each year, and BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman says: “We are excited to launch this annual celebration of former players and coaches who have had profound impacts on the history and success of our 22 basketball programs. This first group of BIG EAST Legends includes trailblazers as well as more recent stars, all of whom have contributed significantly to their schools and many of whom are part of BIG EAST basketball lore. We look forward to giving them another big round of applause during our upcoming tournament festivities." Full list of the 22 individuals set to be recognized. (link)
