The Dartmouth (DI) men’s basketball team voted in favor of unionization by a vote of 13-2. Big Green student-athletes Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil: “Today is a big day for our team. We stuck together all season and won this election. It is self-evident that we, as students, can also be both campus workers and union members. … It’s time for the age of amateurism to end." (link, link); The NCAA in a statement indicates that “NCAA and student-athlete leadership from all three divisions agree college athletes should not be forced into an employment model. The Association believes change in college sports is long overdue and is pursuing significant reforms. However, there are some issues the NCAA cannot address alone, and the Association looks forward to working with Congress to make needed changes in the best interests of all student-athletes. (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “This is the start of a wave. And I think this is something that is going to be really interesting to see play out in terms of employment rights and also how schools respond, how the NCAA responds. Do they declare Dartmouth is ineligible for sports? We'll see. Will schools convert teams to club teams and there are all sorts of possibilities ahead. This is about fundamentally changing the relationship between the athletes and their school.” (link); More from Dartmouth’s NLRB appeal, as Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out the school argues that international athletes will not be able to compete in college sports if the employment ruling is upheld. At least 20% of the Dartmouth team is made up of international athletes. The appeal also accuses NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks of creating a “new definition of ‘employee’ that not only exceeded her authority but promises to have significant labor and public policy implications.” (link)

Sioux Falls AD Jon Hart sits down with Cougars Women’s Soccer student-athlete Abigail Whittington on the Cougar Sports Show to talk about his vision, priorities and more. On the vision he laid out for USF in the interview process: “I just really felt like and still feel the same that University of Sioux Falls, specifically the athletic department, has a lot of potential and a lot of upside. There's no reason that we can't be one of the premier Division II athletic departments in the country and I feel like we have a lot of the tools, we have a lot of the right pieces in order to do that.” Hart’s short-term priorities include “hitting the fundraising trail” to fund appearance and general maintenance upgrades to facilities, budget enhancements and more, with a big picture emphasis on new turf, locker rooms and facility projects that impact all 18 sports at USF. For the Women’s Basketball, Gannon, Southern Nazarene, Assumption, Texas Woman’s, Valdosta State, Catawba and Azusa Pacific remain atop their regions, with Grand Valley State jumping to the top spot in the Midwest region. The NCAA announces a new corporate partnership that makes GEICO its official home and auto insurance partner. The partnership includes all 90 NCAA men's and women's championships beginning with this year’s March Madness. + Saint Augustine’s will move forward with arbitration with the SACSCOC, becoming the first school to ever do so with the accrediting body. As it does so, Interim President Marcus Burgess says the university is “feverishly working” to get through the applicant stage and to the candidacy stage with TRACS. SAU has cut 10 staff positions and hopes to meet payroll this Friday, after failing to make the last payroll. (link)

+ Central State is facing a $4M budget shortfall due in part to overspending using HREF funds on recurring expenses. CSU has paused hiring, travel and more. (link)

+ Mississippi Senate Bill 2726, which called for the closure of three unidentified state colleges or universities, died in committee this week; however, Senator John Polk (R-44), the sponsor of the original bill, has filed a new piece of legislation that would require a task force to conduct a review of schools’ enrollment, degree attainment, federal aid, tuition rates and local economic impact. Boyd: “This bill is about us taking a look, which we haven’t done in a while…at what is going on with our universities and colleges.” (link)
