The Dartmouth (DI) men’s basketball team voted in favor of unionization by a vote of 13-2. Big Green student-athletes Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil: “Today is a big day for our team. We stuck together all season and won this election. It is self-evident that we, as students, can also be both campus workers and union members. … It’s time for the age of amateurism to end." (link, link); The NCAA in a statement indicates that “NCAA and student-athlete leadership from all three divisions agree college athletes should not be forced into an employment model. The Association believes change in college sports is long overdue and is pursuing significant reforms. However, there are some issues the NCAA cannot address alone, and the Association looks forward to working with Congress to make needed changes in the best interests of all student-athletes. (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “This is the start of a wave. And I think this is something that is going to be really interesting to see play out in terms of employment rights and also how schools respond, how the NCAA responds. Do they declare Dartmouth is ineligible for sports? We'll see. Will schools convert teams to club teams and there are all sorts of possibilities ahead. This is about fundamentally changing the relationship between the athletes and their school.” (link); More from Dartmouth’s NLRB appeal, as Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out the school argues that international athletes will not be able to compete in college sports if the employment ruling is upheld. At least 20% of the Dartmouth team is made up of international athletes. The appeal also accuses NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks of creating a “new definition of ‘employee’ that not only exceeded her authority but promises to have significant labor and public policy implications.” (link)

Consultants for Deloitte conducting an analysis of DIII’s finances have identified four themes according to the latest report from the DIII Presidents and Management Council: “improve financial posture, fund growth opportunities, invest in the student-athlete experience and design for threat resiliency.” Final recommendations will be made by the end of April and be used to finalize the FY25 and FY26 budgets. + The list of 180 Men’s Wrestling Championship participants have been released. Wrestlers will hit the mat in La Crosse, WI on March 15. (link)

+ HCAC Commissioner Jay Jones is the latest to speak out regarding Transylvania Women’s Basketball not hosting this weekend, stating: “It’s a rule that’s getting a lot of negative attention and because of that hopefully we can get it changed moving forward. […] There’s nothing nefarious that happened. There’s nothing that the NCAA wasn’t following. What I will say is it’s a policy that we don’t like.” (link)

+ Fort Wayne unveils its plans to “Paint the Town Blue” when the Men’s Basketball Championship comes to town. (link)

SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry chats with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue about the return of FB this fall and future expansion. On the latter, Hanberry notes “the phone still rings” and the league has not shut the door on expansion, adding: “We would be open to having those conversations if someone makes sense to us from many different vantage points, including geography, culture and sports sponsorship. […] There isn't any inherent pressure to move with more membership, but our group isn’t against considering additional members. I would be shocked if we get above 12 core members.” On a potential alliance with the ASC leading up to having an AQ bid in 2028, Hanberry states: “The overall sentiment right now is that our members feel that if we’re going to have SCAC football, we need to take away the ambiguity that a transition would entail. Our group wants to reestablish the SCAC connection, and playing an SCAC schedule is more important than trying to find a temporary fix.” Asked how the situation is different than in 2016, when the ASC added SCAC members as affiliates, and why the same affiliation is not being offered, Hanberry answers: “We would be going away from our core league and under someone else’s umbrella. At the end of the day, it made sense for us to move down the path of establishing SCAC football, and we need to go ahead and rip off the band-aid.” (link)

Buena Vista will break ground on an expansion of Siebens Fieldhouse thanks to three gifts totaling $6.3M. The 7K+ square-foot addition will include a new athletic performance facility and 1K+ square-foot turf space. This initiates the first phase of a $10M fundraising campaign which will upgrade spaces at “Al Baxter Wrestling Room, the Lamberti Recreation Center and Dennis Young Track, locker rooms, general workout space, meeting rooms, and coaches' offices, further supporting the development and well-being of all students.” President Brian Lenzmeier: “One of the core themes of BVU’s ten-year vision is building community, with the goal of this project to provide students access to facilities that better support their individual growth. This addition and renovation will be the first of several projects in the athletics area that will undoubtedly enhance the overall experience for all students.” (link)

The NCAA announces a new corporate partnership that makes GEICO its official home and auto insurance partner. The partnership includes all 90 NCAA men's and women's championships beginning with this year’s March Madness. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt: "We are thrilled to welcome GEICO back to the NCAA Corporate Champion and Partner Program. GEICO's commitment to supporting NCAA championships and student-athletes while engaging creatively with millions of zealous college sports fans is appreciated and elevates the championship experience." The Little East will add Babson and Norwich as Men’s Ice Hockey affiliate members in 2025-26, growing the membership to nine. Commissioner Pamela Samuelson: “Their addition further enhances what we believe will be a highly competitive sport at the national level for the LEC, and will allow long-standing rivalries to continue for our members currently playing in the New England Hockey Conference.” (link)

Kenyon will add Women’s Golf as its 23rd varsity sport starting in 2025-26. AD Jill McCartney: “Our goal is to have a head coach hired this spring and in place by August 1 so that the coach can take full advantage of the academic year to recruit and plan for the 2025-26 season. We want to be sure that we provide enough time to create an optimal competitive experience for the young women who choose to be part of the inaugural class of women golfers at Kenyon.” (link)

+ Mississippi Senate Bill 2726, which called for the closure of three unidentified state colleges or universities, died in committee this week; however, Senator John Polk (R-44), the sponsor of the original bill, has filed a new piece of legislation that would require a task force to conduct a review of schools’ enrollment, degree attainment, federal aid, tuition rates and local economic impact. Boyd: “This bill is about us taking a look, which we haven’t done in a while…at what is going on with our universities and colleges.” (link)

+ Mississippi Senate Bill 2715, which was originally written to change Mississippi University for Women’s name, has been amended to propose it become a part of Mississippi State (DI), effective July 1, 2025. The bill has made it out of committee, with President Nora Miller stating: “We became aware of the last-minute amendment made to Senate Bill 2715 yesterday. The proposed action to merge and rename the university 'The W at Mississippi State University’ was unexpected, but we are fully committed to ensuring our university’s health and sustainability and its 140-year legacy in the state of Mississippi.” (link)
