Missouri will pay TurnkeyZRG at least $125K for its AD search, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff, who notes Mizzou “will pay that search fee plus expenses in two installments to TurnkeyZRG, according to a copy of the contract. The contract also states TurnkeyZRG “shall manage candidate communications, as well as the vetting/interview process.” Additionally, the firm will provide three candidate assessments, “suggesting that is the target number of finalists for the job,” per Hoff. There is also a one-year warranty period that states if the eventual new AD is terminated, Turnkey would conduct another search at no additional charge.” (link)

The NFL is still trying to convince College Football Playoff leaders to change its schedule this year to avoid encroaching on Saturday dates in December that have traditionally been the NFL’s turf. Puck’s John Ourand: “The CFP has said that it will hold one game in the early afternoon, one in the late afternoon, and one in the evening [on December 21]. Sources tell me the NFL knows that it’s unlikely the CFP will move all three games off of that Saturday. Its new tactic is to convince CFP to move at least one of those games from Saturday to Friday. (There is already a game on Friday, and this would allow for two games on each day.) This appears to be the most likely scenario, but it will be fascinating to watch this game of Vulcan chess play out.” (link)

Dayton AD Neil Sullivan this week sent a letter to season ticket holders to share news that recruits can now negotiate NIL deals with third parties before committing: “To date, this is my most important update and I urge you to take a moment to read this information and find a way to support the NIL program. … The University of Dayton may not use any institutional funds (from season tickets, donations, etc.) to compensate players for use of their name, image, and likeness. I think this rule will ultimately change, but for the current recruiting period, UD may not contribute financially. As a result, the NIL compensation students receive is entirely reliant on third parties like you, Dayton 6th, corporations, organizations, and individual contributors. We continue to focus on long-term, sustainable relationships, not fleeting transactions of talent acquisition fees. However, never before has supporting Dayton 6th and other NIL related organizations who support our student-athletes been more important to player attraction and retention. I am asking you to visit Dayton 6th website to learn all the various ways you can support this effort. Further, I ask you to support our corporate partners who have actively stepped up to partner with our players. NIL helped build our current roster, and will help build our next.” (link)

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf catches up with several ADs to find out how they’re keeping men’s basketball fans engaged this season, and Baylor AD Mack Rhoades explains the Bears offer a non-traditional option for fans to arrive at the new Foster Pavilion: via the Brazos River. “We'll have fans come to the Foster Pavilion on a boat. You can take recruits down [on the river]. It's a uniqueness for us that we've done a good job emphasizing." Rhoades also says of the decision to shrink the arena’s capacity: "We thought a lot about supply and demand. And if you're not here, you feel like you're left out. And so, it was this idea of creating this demand of, 'I want to be there.'" Medcalf notes that in the top seven men's college basketball conferences, combined average attendance has dropped from 75,818 in 2007-08 to 66,963 last season. Meanwhile, a recent study by North Carolina professor Nels Popp found that 48 schools had a 37% "no-show" rate during their nonconference games last season. Therefore, selling tickets appears to be only part of the problem. The other is getting fans who do buy tickets to come. As such, Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison believes it’s wiser to invest in areas other than adding seats. For instance, he says: "We had to get our food game on point. People don't mind spending money in sport venues if you give them something that they can't get elsewhere or you give them something that excites them. It was very important to get some local restaurants in there. You can get your Nashville hot chicken in there. ... That's like a taste of going downtown without having to leave the building. We've gotten a lot of compliments." Harrison adds: "We've quadrupled our season-ticket sales already. That is what it was designed to do. …. We're better this year than we have been, but I think what we've been able to provide has been a huge part of that." More. (link)

Stanford AD Bernard Muir acknowledges frustration with the performance of his men’s hoops team and says in a statement: “Stanford has a deep history of men’s basketball success, and I can understand why the on-court outcomes of recent seasons have been disappointing to many Cardinal supporters. As with each sport, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of all aspects of the program at the conclusion of the season. … Coach Haase and I agree that the on-court results of our men’s basketball program are not what we want them to be. Having said that, I believe that the young nucleus of talent on our team and promising recruiting will propel us to take the next steps we all desire while our program continues to operate with great integrity and achieve the highest levels of academic excellence. I look forward to my continued partnership with Coach Haase.” (link)

UTSA AD Lisa Campos joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Roadrunners’ Senior Assoc. AD/CFO position opening, including its daily duties, areas of oversight, what types of experience she is looking for and lots more. Campos also says of the UTSA culture: “It’s the San Antonio Way. San Antonio, we’re multicultural, we're just a family atmosphere and that's how we've run this institution, that's how we've run our athletics program, that we're all in this together. We're all rowing in the same boat. We have a relatively small department with about 130-140 positions.” Campos also acknowledges that “winning helps, building facilities helps, having this momentum really helps, but I would be remiss if I didn't say we also have great institutional support from [President Taylor Eighmy] to our chief enterprise officer in Veronica Salazar. This university and the city is behind UTSA athletics.” As far as potential candidates, Campos says UTSA is looking for someone who has previously served in this role or has learned from a solid mentor. Also: “We are in such a growth pattern right now and I need someone who’s going to be really innovative in keeping up with this growth.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

UCLA Football HC DeShaun Foster’s five-year contract will pay him $3M in the first year, followed by raises of $100K each subsequent year. The Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch reports Foster also received a hiring bonus of $250K and will receive one $500K retention bonus if he is still employed by the school on March 15, 2026. He will receive another $500K retention bonus if he remains employed on March 15, 2028. Bolch also explains that “Foster’s buyout comes with a declining percentage of his remaining salary over the remaining years on his contract. For instance, if UCLA was to buy him out after the end of his second season on Dec. 2, 2025, it would owe 60% of of his remaining salary in Year 3 and 40% of his remaining salary in Years 4 and 5 — a total of roughly $5.27M. That buyout figure would drop to $3.35M if the Bruins were to buy out Foster on Dec. 2, 2026, after the end of his third season.” If Foster were to leave UCLA on or before Dec. 31, 2024, he would owe $10M. That figure drops to $7M if Foster departs on or before Dec. 31, 2025; $5M if he left on or before Dec. 31, 2026; $2.5M if he left on or before Dec. 31, 2027; and $1M if he left on or before Dec. 31, 2028. Foster can earn $100K for making the Big Ten championship and another $100K for winning it. Additionally, Foster will receive $100K for making a bowl game and another $50K for winning it. Making the College Football Playoff would net Foster a $200K bonus, with an additional $150K for each victory. Foster would pocket $200K more for winning the title. (link)

The Friends of UNILV collective is examining ways it can legally accept support from the casino industry, and Chairman Bill Paulos explains: “I was in the gaming business for 50 years. Giving to a specific player or specific team is just a no-no. The Gaming Control Board says, ‘How can you do that and take bets on that school, too?’ And rightly so. What we figured out is, then maybe they can help us sponsor some promotions we’ve got planned.” To that end, the Rebels held a “dry run” for a promotion through which a fan could make $150K by making a half-court shot during Wednesday night’s game against San Diego State. The Las Vegas Sun’s Mike Grimala: “The Palms is sponsoring the promotion by putting up the prize money, but that’s not all the company is doing. It’s a bit convoluted, but here’s how it works: If a UNLV fan wants to enter their name to possibly be chosen for the halfcourt shot, they can head to the Friends of UNILV website and donate (for every $1 spent, the donor earns one entry for the drawing). The Palms is then offering vouchers, matching all donations up to $100, which can be redeemed for food, beverages and free play at Palms properties within a week of purchase. That means if a UNLV fan wanted to donate, say, $50 to the basketball program, they could do it through the NIL half-court shot promotion, and in return they would receive a $50 voucher to The Palms. For potential donors who plan to be at The Palms in the near future, it’s essentially a free donation.” All of the money collected by the collective will be earmarked for basketball players, and Paulos was hoping to have secured $50K in donations by the time the game tipped off. As of now at least, head coaches will not be part of EA Sports’ College Football 25, but Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin says he’d be in the game for free. He tells On3’s Andy Staples: “The kids like to play it. When they’re picking the team, you would want recruits to play with the coach. … My brain thinks about ‘What would help in recruiting?’ If you did pay me for that, I wouldn’t want it. I’d want you to put it into our NIL.” (link)

In a second day of testimony on Capitol Hill, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated his position that the central bank was looking for greater confidence that inflation was returning to its 2% target, but he went one step further in noting how soon interest rates may come down: “When we do get that confidence, and we’re not far from it, it will be appropriate to dial back.” Powell went on to say he thought interest rates “now are well into restrictive territory” and “well above neutral,” an expected rate that would occur when supply and demand are in balance. SiriusXM host/former Ohio State student-athlete Ben Hartsock cites the disparate approaches being taken by Ole Miss and Kansas, noting Rebels AD Carter earlier this week explaining Vaught-Hemingway Stadium renovations were put on hold to focus more on NIL efforts. “Ole Miss is slowing facilities upgrades to buy players, while Kansas is spending $448M on a stadium upgrade. Will be an interesting case study in the coming years.” Jayhawks AD Travis Goff responds: “Unique time for sure. Reality is for us it’s both: must provide world-class facilities where our S-A’s spend their time developing, while offering great fan experience & driving revenue…PLUS ALSO building one of the best NIL programs to maximize our Jayhawks’ opportunities.” (link)

Regarding further MAC expansion, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports: “Industry sources have also told me if Western Kentucky could not be persuaded, the MAC is unlikely to target an FCS program in the immediate future.” With UMass off the board as a potential candidate for Conference USA, Brown notes C-USA’s most likely potential expansion candidates include Missouri State, Tarleton State, Eastern Kentucky, and Central Arkansas. Also from Brown: “UMass officials also confirmed to me that A-10 bylaws require the school to pay a $4M exit fee, with $1M due in 30 days, and the balance due before UMass formally joins the MAC. UMass will also owe the MAC an entrance fee, but I’m told some of the specific financial details between UMass and the MAC have not been completely finalized.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann highlights 10 key issues for Dartmouth men’s basketball moving forward, starting with the importance of the team voting 13-2 in favor of unionization. “The overwhelming vote signals the players are largely unified and that Dartmouth’s efforts to persuade the players to vote no—such as warning the team could be deemed ineligible by the NCAA or suggesting international players will run afoul of their F-1 visas—failed. Likewise, to the extent parents and friends urged the players to vote no, the players weren’t persuaded.” Also, Dartmouth is expected to request a stay from the NLRB to postpone collectively bargaining with the team until after the board has reviewed the school’s appeal, a process which could take months, if not more than a year. In the event there is no delay, Dartmouth must negotiate in good faith on “mandatory subjects of employment: wages, hours, insurance, health care, disciplinary procedures and support services. If Dartmouth refused to bargain, the union could file unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB.” The union could also file such charges in the event Dartmouth were to try and eliminate the men’s hoops program. Also from McCann: “If the NCAA disqualifies Dartmouth for paying players, or if Dartmouth refuses to pay players on account of NCAA membership rules, Dartmouth players could respond through the NLRB. But they have other legal options, including decertifying and suing on antitrust grounds.” Lots more. (link)

Some college football fans are wondering why the onus to pay players falls on them, according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, who is told by Georgia fan Brent Freeman: “No ill will toward the university or anything. My gripe is with the system. Asking us fans, I think, is wrong. I think it’s comical the money the NCAA brings in, and the fact they’re asking fans — and not just Georgia fans, but fans across the country — to give more, it’s just kind of comical. You can’t explain to me that this is the best way to do it.” The sentiment is becoming increasingly common, according to Walker Jones, executive director of the Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective, who tells Emerson: “It certainly is on the minds of all of us right now. I think there’s an understanding that the donor-led and fan-led model is not equitable and not sustainable. … I think it’s wise for these power conferences to figure out a revenue share and to figure out a way to collectively bargain. Which would then address donor fatigue, it would add sustainability and it would give the athletes the ability to truly capitalize on name, image and likeness, through revenue sharing.” Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) Founder Jason Belzer also weighs in and says donor fatigue was inevitable with the current setup: “Those people have now had to step up to pay not only the university’s regular operating costs but now the payroll of these teams. We’re now in the third year of NIL, and a lot of schools’ donors aren’t getting a return on their investment. Before you at least got your name on the building. Now you pay for the payroll, and your team doesn’t win.” More from Emerson. (link)

The Collegiate Commissioners Association confirms the December football signing period will be moved from the end of the month to the beginning – specifically December 4-6 this year. A new early signing period is also being considered for 2025 to add a three-day window starting the last Wednesday of June. The CCA is targeting June 2024 as the date for taking action on this proposal and says in a statement: “The CCA supports providing high school and two-year college prospective student-athletes with the opportunity to sign NLIs before coaches turn their focus to four-year transfers during the opening of the Division I transfer window in December.” (link)

By moving National Signing Day to the beginning of December, football coaches will likely be fired sooner than they are now, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who hears from one agent: “Now, the cycle is going to start a lot sooner. If they stumble out of the gates, even if it’s not their contract year, they could be one or two years in, a lot more moves are going to start being made. The pressure coaches are under is going to be tremendously amplified. It’s going to cause a real issue with the coaching stability in the marketplace.” Another agent posits that the “pressure is going to be so intense and look, the institutions are going to want to get ahead of the game, right? They’re going to want to start looking for the next guy sooner rather than later, especially if they know that they’re going to make a move. The other ramification of this is the school’s buyouts. Oh, they’re going to explode exponentially.” It’s also likely that this could result in collectives gaining more power, as one agent explains: “It used to be that if the coach was fired, then the whole recruitment class fell apart. Now, they fire the coach, and it doesn’t matter because this guy from the collective still called me and said that they’re going to honor my deal. … You and I both know collectives are really the backbone financially of roster management roster acquisition. I think some of these programs are going to have a lot more reliance on them.” (link)

Fox’s college football coverage will include a package of Friday night games starting this season. The AP’s Joe Reedy: “The college football package will fill a void for Fox on Friday nights during the fall when WWE’s ‘Friday Night SmackDown’ moves to USA Network in October. A couple of games could air on Fox in September with ‘SmackDown’ moving to FS1, which is what happened during the baseball playoffs and World Series. … The schedule of games, which will include matchups from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Mountain West conferences, likely won’t be announced until late May or early June after conferences and the networks hold their selection meetings.” (link)

Sexual assault survivor Brenda Tracy intends to sue Michigan State and former Spartans Football HC Mel Tucker seeking $75M in damages, arguing that her reputation was damaged by Tucker’s sexual harassment and subsequent threats, his release of her private text messages with her deceased best friend and business assistant, and the university’s failure to both prevent his misconduct and maintain the confidentiality of its investigation into her claim against him. The filings also allege her ability to continue charitable work has been hampered, her potential for future earnings has been damaged, and she has suffered severe psychological and emotional harm. Tracy is seeking $50M for herself and $25M for her nonprofit. MSU declined to comment. (link)
