Championships Talk:

+ During last month’s Championships Committee meeting, the group formally recommended the expansion of the Football bracket to 40 and merger of Pool B and C bids into one group of at-large selections, starting in 2024-25. Expansion of football will be left to the DIII Management Council to approve next month, at which point the DIII FB Committee will deliberate further on the timing of implementing that change. The committee is exploring adjusting the access ratio for team sports from 1:6.5 to 1:6 and to 1:7 for individual/team sports, with further discussions to come at this month’s meeting alongside financial analysis. The committee remains committed to capping team sport brackets at 64 teams and championship length at three weeks, excluding football. On increased flexibility for flights to protect higher ranked teams: “the committee broadened the goal to “protecting” those top seeds and acknowledged the challenges with the division’s philosophy and budget,” with more discussions to come. + Hoopsville’s Dave McHugh reports the Men’s Basketball title game “will NOT air live on CBS Sports Network. Championship will stream live at 4:00 PM ET on CBSSports.com. Game will then air on CBSSN at 10:00 PM ET Saturday night. This changes what was said in NCAA memos which we reported on last month.” (link)

WIAC Commissioner Danielle Harris joins D3.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss industry and DIII challenges, streaming and more. Amidst a shortage of officials and athletic trainers, Harris emphasizes the importance of “how we’re scheduling our events. We’re adding sports, which is a good thing because sometimes they’re enrollment drivers, but are we overlapping events? Are we having too many events in one day? Are we spreading things out so that I may have to work four or five hours here, but I may not have to work a 14 or 16 hour day two or three days back-to-back. So what can we do to lighten that load to make sure that we spread our contest out.” On athletic trainers specifically, Harris points to needing to take things off of their plate through more individuals being first aid, CPR and AED certified, as well as “the amount of resources our athletic trainers have, the hours we make them work, the restrictions we put on coaches” with last minute schedule changes and more. Rockhurst (DII) AD Kristy Bayer pens for BOSCA on the transition from coaching to administration and the decision, preparation and aftermath of such a move. Bayer relays her decision came from her loss of excitement with the “rest of coaching,” outside of game day. Her preparation for a transition began early in her career, by serving in other roles, serving in committees and communicating her goals with her AD. “My strongest piece of advice is to serve on committees. […] You will expand your network, while gaining valuable knowledge about your organization. […] As I was preparing for the AD interview, I was discouraged because I didn’t have a lot of fundraising experience. I mentioned this to Tim Selgo, a DII legend and my former AD when I played at Grand Valley (DII). He said, ‘What do you mean you don’t have fundraising experience?! You were a successful head coach for 14 years. Your recruiting is your fundraising. You have years of experience.’ You can sell. You can speak in front of groups. You can persuade people. This is an underrated skill, that is greatly transferable to external roles in athletics.” On coping with the loss of a coaching identity, Bayer: “You will need to adopt a mindset shift. As a coach, you were an advocate for your players, budget, court time, and everything necessary for your team to be successful. As an administrator, not only do you look out for the entire department, but your decisions and actions need to be in the best interests of the entire university. You don’t have a singular domain anymore. You need to contribute to the collective good of university operations. […] Your path may forever lie in coaching or you may be deciding your next step. You may have transitioned out, but in your heart, mind, and body, you will always be a coach.” (link)

Grove City removes the interim tag in naming Jason Baker as Women’s Basketball HC, effective immediately. AD Todd Gibson: "When we consider coaching candidates, it is imperative that they reflect the core values of Grove City College (Faithfulness, Excellence, Community, Stewardship and Independence) and that the program that they lead reflects those same values. Jason has embraced these values since coming on to our campus as an assistant coach three years ago, and in his season as our interim coach, Jason and his staff worked daily to uphold them.” (link)

+ Fitch Ratings warns that delays in processing FAFSA applications could threaten the credit and even the viability of small private colleges that serve low-income students. “For colleges that are almost solely dependent on student-generated revenues, this enrollment uncertainty is wreaking havoc on their already tight budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year. For colleges that suffer enrollment losses, even marginal, one-time disruptions in producing a robust incoming freshman class will dampen finances for several years.” (link)

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says there is “no reason to think” the U.S. is headed toward a recession and suggested to the House Financial Services Committee that rate cuts are on the horizon this year – but not until officials have “gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably.” Powell adds: “We want to see a little bit more data so that we can become confident. We’re not looking for better inflation readings than we’ve had. We’re just looking for more of them.” (link); In a second day of testimony on Capitol Hill, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated his position that the central bank was looking for greater confidence that inflation was returning to its 2% target, but he went one step further in noting how soon interest rates may come down: “When we do get that confidence, and we’re not far from it, it will be appropriate to dial back.” Powell went on to say he thought interest rates “now are well into restrictive territory” and “well above neutral,” an expected rate that would occur when supply and demand are in balance.
