Former Wisconsin AD/Football HC Barry Alvarez with strong thoughts on the impact of NIL during a radio interview with ESPN Wisconsin: “It’s going to ruin college football as we know it. It’s out of control and unsustainable. The paying of the players. It’s supposed to be illegal for coaches to use cash to recruit players, but that’s exactly what is happening. [...] I just see the whole thing blowing up unless we have some drastic changes. It’s just out of control, unsustainable, it’s going to screw up college football.” (link)

The Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency confirmed to Sports Illustrated on Friday that Loyola (MD) men’s basketball squad is the subject of an inquiry into unusual wagering activity. A statement from the school: “Loyola was made aware of an individual’s gambling violation that was promptly reported to the NCAA. The individual was immediately removed from the program, and the NCAA accepted the self-report and took no further action. The conference office investigated to ensure the integrity of League contests by reaching out to U.S. Integrity, the conference’s monitoring partner. U.S. Integrity analyzed contests and no anomalies were discovered. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency provided contact information on operators licensed in the state, and those operators confirmed all previously known information.” The Greyhounds finished 7-25 this season and Head Coach Tavaras Hardy will not return. Front Office Sports broke the news on an eight-team in-season Men’s Basketball tournament to be played next season in Las Vegas with each program receiving at least $1M for NIL deals & the winning program doubling to $2M. EverWonder Studio & AND1 CEO of Basketball Seth Berger are behind the effort, dubbed “Players Era.” Programs reportedly in the mix to participate include Alabama, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Houston, Kansas, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State, St. John’s, Syracuse & Virginia. On3’s Eric Prisbell catches up with multiple men’s basketball stakeholders to discuss the most likely path for NCAA Tournament expansion and notes: “In the short term – with the short term being the operative words – stakeholders express cautious optimism that they can thread a needle with an evolved structure that entails modest expansion to appease power leagues while also maintaining tournament access for conference tournament champions from one-bid leagues. The long-term realistic expectation? No one interviewed for this story could project that with any confidence.” One source tells Prisbell: “It’s a balancing act. There’s a tipping point here, where those [Power 4] conferences and schools could really have backlash. It’s unnecessary because there’s a way to achieve some balance here. Modest expansion that keeps the magic of this event whole while still providing more access, more opportunity.” Meanwhile, another source tells Prisbell that expanding the tournament would only marginally add value to the property. “If you think regular-season men’s basketball has limited media value now, expanding the tournament might just wipe it out completely. Why bother to watch the regular season if everyone is going to make the tournament? Why not make the entire season one giant triple-elimination tournament? Once a school is eliminated, it can drop down to the triple-elimination NIT tournament. Once eliminated from that, it can drop down to some other tournament.” More. (link)

Thousands of fans waited in line at yesterday’s Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament to see Iowa star Caitlin Clark in action. However, retired journalist Lyle Muller was onsite & questioned why the league sold all tournament tickets as general admission: “You bought all session tickets. You can watch games like Maryland-Ohio State. Great, right? However, they clear the arena after each session. Here’s what happens: You have to get in line to get your GA seat. That means standing in line to get a decent seat. Your choices are: stand in line for a seat, attend Big10 rally stuff or watch early session. [...] 1st person in line for popular Iowa game at 5:30 pm CST got here at 5.50 AM. [...] So, these people bought full session tickets to stand in line all day. Maryland beating Ohio State in an upset bid? Gotta go to get in line. [...] Haven’t met one person who isn’t angry with the Big10. That includes some ushers who have to explain this BS to entering fans.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken underscores the importance of former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban’s comments regarding the changes brought by NIL and the transfer portal and posits that “in reality, those rule changes did more to spread the talent around than it did to help Saban collect blue-chip recruits. … It’s also completely understandable how such an arrangement would alter the relationship Saban had previously enjoyed with the blue-chip recruits who chose to play for him. If players were no longer convinced that the long-term developmental advantages of playing at Alabama were greater than the amount of NIL money they could make at other programs, then the system that made Saban dominant for so long would begin to show cracks even he couldn’t paper over.” However, rather than using Saban’s remarks as an excuse to try and go backward, Wolken contends it would be wiser to view them as further confirmation that “bemoaning this new world or prodding lawmakers…just won’t cut it anymore. … College sports can choose order through action or disorder through complaint and complacency. Saban’s words should be a warning that the latter is no longer the best option at their disposal.” (link)

BakerHostetler Partner Todd Lebowitz highlights some of the realities associated with student-athletes becoming employees and points out the NLRA “obligates employers to bargain over a broad range of issues, including compensation, scheduling, work rules, discipline and work assignments.” He then applies those criteria to schools as employers and asks: “Can the coach set the starting lineup (work assignments) without consulting the union? Set the practice schedule? The travel schedule? The play-calling? … What happens when two starters get benched for objecting to curfew? File a charge. Disciplined for violating a team rule that you and a teammate called unfair? File a charge. Did the coach make the whole team run laps because one player was late? (Yes, in the Dartmouth case). If two players refuse and get disciplined, file a charge. An administrative law judge will decide who plays and whether the discipline stands.” Furthermore, if student-athletes are employees under the NLRA, they may be employees under other laws too. “The NLRA is just one tree in a forest of employment laws.” Additionally, Lebowitz points out the irony in which the “Dartmouth Student Athlete Handbook prohibits players from receiving compensation for employment obtained ‘because of athletic ability.’ … But that’s exactly what the regional director concluded is happening. Quite the conundrum. The regional director would likely say that her ruling applies only to the NLRA, and technically that’s correct. But other laws apply the same test. So either the regional director is right in her ruling, or she is misapplying the test. Or are we prepared to say that the players are employees under the right-to-control test and simultaneously not employees under the right-to-control test?” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben reports that several major college football awards will not be included in EA Sports’ College Football 25. Among them: Bednarik Award (top defensive player), Davey O’Brien Award (top quarterback), Doak Walker Award (top running back), Jim Thorpe Award (top defensive back), Outland Trophy (top interior lineman), Lou Groza Award (top kicker) and the Ray Guy Award (top punter). Still no word on if the Butkus Award (top linebacker) or Bronko Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player) will be a part of the game. Hoops magazine and lifestyle company Slam has acquired college basketball apparel company 19nine. Sportico’s Dylan Manfre: “The deal merges Slam’s merchandise team with 19nine, which has licenses with more than 80 colleges and universities. It also allows for expansion into a new facility in Indiana. Slam’s parent company, sports and entertainment private equity firm JDS Sports, made an investment in 19nine back in 2020 to expand business operations and sell 19nine products on its online store.” Slam CEO Les Green: “Now we have our stamp on NCAA products, lifestyle products, products featuring NBA players, and really the acquisition of 19nine was to shore up the full lifestyle of basketball. It solidifies our merch side to be as encompassing and inclusive as our media side.” (link)

From in front of the Law360 paywall: ”The Georgia Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a trial court’s ruling that Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium can’t be held liable for injuries a woman sustained in a brawl at a 2017 college football game, but said the men she fought with have to face her assault and battery claims.” The game was the September 2017 tilt between Florida State and Alabama. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “in a proposal socialized with administrators this week, the Big Ten and SEC would combine to earn about 58% of the [College Football Playoff’s] base distribution — a figure that will certainly grow in participation distribution as their individual schools earn more revenue for qualifying and advancing through the playoffs. The figure would greatly exceed the ACC and Big 12’s combined distribution number, which is expected to be around 31%. The remaining amount (roughly 10%) will be distributed to Notre Dame and the 64 Group of Five teams.” In total, the SEC/Big Ten would earn roughly $760M per year while the ACC/Big 12 would net ~$440M. The G5/Notre Dame’s cut comes out to about $115M. Dellenger: “Considering the distribution percentages, SEC teams will earn as much as $23M annually, Big Ten $21M, ACC around $13.7M and Big 12 around $12.3M. Group of 5 teams are expected to earn a figure just south of $2M. The contract is expected to include a definitive ‘look-in’ provision in 2028. The look-in provision can be triggered before that date from any conference realignment — a provision that Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark encouraged to be added.” Format concerns aside, the revenue distribution is “is causing anxiety in both the ACC and Big 12, with some of the administrators asking a vexing question: ‘Would the Power Two really leave if we say no?’” Lots more from Dellenger. In the face of public backlash, the idea of awarding automatic first-round College Football Playoff byes to the Big Ten and SEC in a 14-team field is “starting to lose some steam among conference commissioners,” according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich, who adds: “It's likely the details of the 14-team format aren't determined in advance of the TV contract, which sources said remains on target to be done in the coming weeks. CFP leaders want to ensure they are aligned on revenue distribution and CFP governance before signing the TV deal, and they have had multiple meetings and calls recently to make progress in both areas. … Sources cautioned that as long as the format is up for debate, all options will be considered but that ‘some things will be punted’ until after the TV deal is done. It's possible that CFP leaders will wait to see how the 12-team format unfolds this season, but sources have indicated they would like a resolution sooner than later.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne covers a lot of ground with Bama247’s Alex Scarborough, including changes to the football recruiting calendar, about which he says: “There’s talk about adding a signing day in June. I don't know what that accomplishes other than potentially high school kids opting out of their senior year of high school. When the portal opens up is when you're competing, and so I would hope that if we're going to do anything, we would maybe move up this December signing day to sometime in November when most of the high school seasons are done or they're right at the end and everybody in our space is still competing. And in a lot of ways -- it may not be the popular thing -- but it would be nice to go back to one signing day in February.” As for whether student-athletes becoming employees will inevitably lead to sports getting cut, Byrne says the “money will come from somewhere, and we realize at the University of Alabama that our investment in our football program allows the opportunity for all of our other sports.” He adds: “Our lowest net financial loss for a program is one of our tennis programs which loses just under a million dollars a year. Combined, men’s and women’s tennis lose close to $2M a year. And you look at it, there's a lot of bus rides, there's a lot of experiences that are done at where we're making very challenging economic decisions already.” Lots more. (link)

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) will hold an NIL roundtable next Tuesday in Washington, D.C., with panelists including former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban, Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS), Alabama AD Greg Byrne, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, NIL stars Hanna and Haley Cavinder, The Collective Association President Russell White and Heitner Legal proprietor Darren Heitner. The focus of the roundtable will be on the “urgent need for Congress to find consensus and pass bipartisan legislation to codify NIL rights for student-athletes.” (link)

+ A clip from this morning’s D1.ticker presented two different statements from Stanford AD Bernard Muir adjacently. To clarify, the quote issued by Muir on Thursday was, “Stanford has a deep history of men’s basketball success, and I can understand why the on-court outcomes of recent seasons have been disappointing to many Cardinal supporters. As with each sport, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of all aspects of the program at the conclusion of the season.” After announcing a decision to retain head men’s basketball coach Jerod Haase two years ago, Muir said, “Coach Haase and I agree that the on-court results of our men’s basketball program are not what we want them to be. Having said that, I believe that the young nucleus of talent on our team and promising recruiting will propel us to take the next steps we all desire while our program continues to operate with great integrity and achieve the highest levels of academic excellence. I look forward to my continued partnership with Coach Haase.”

U.S. Integrity issued an alert to casinos yesterday regarding unusual betting activity in the UAB-Temple men’s basketball game. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports the “line moved significantly during the day Thursday leading up to the game. At one casino, the line moved from UAB as a 1.5-point favorite over Temple at the beginning of the day to UAB as an eight-point favorite by mid-afternoon, then settling at seven closer to tip-off. The Blazers routed the Owls, 100–72.” Forde also notes U.S. Integrity has been monitoring Owls games for a while, and Temple Director of Strategic Communications for Men’s Basketball Chad Cooper says: “We are aware of the social media posts regarding last night’s men’s basketball game. We will review the reports thoroughly in accordance with university and NCAA policies. While we can’t comment any further at this time, we take this matter very seriously.” (link)

Kansas State has a couple things working in its favor when it comes to preventing court-storming, according to Sportico’s Eric Jackson. The first is MBB HC Jerome Tang’s relationship with the students, as Jackson notes Tang has made it a point to engage the student body. “His relationship shows up in different ways—he hands out his phone number to K-State students, and he calls out the student body for only a few people showing up to a game after an overtime win over West Virginia last month. It also shows up in the happier moments like when his team pulls off big upsets at home. So, when Tang asks the students to not storm the court after big wins, the students listen to him.” It also helps that after big wins, the players go into the student section to celebrate. Beyond that, K-State also has a logistical advantage, as Jackson points out: “Unlike at other basketball arenas, the student section at Bramlage Coliseum…is located across the court from both teams’ benches, several rows up above a designated area where dignitaries and donors sit, which makes it more difficult for students to get on the court in a matter of seconds.” Wildcats AD Gene Taylor: “We’re unique in how we’re set up. A lot of folks don’t have the natural barriers that we do.” Taylor also tells Jackson he understands K-State’s situation is unusual and acknowledges he doesn’t have an all-encompassing solution, “but I think continuing to talk about it and find other ways to celebrate with student fans. … Obviously, fines aren’t helping.” (link)

While EA Sports has secured over 10K opt-ins for College Football 25, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes the “bulk of the current uncommitted athletes, I’m told, are closer to ‘regular players who just haven’t signed the paperwork yet’ than ‘huge names holding out over money.’” Brown is also told that Texas QB Arch Manning, the most notable opt-out so far, was offered the standard $600 contract as well as a secondary marketing deal. The fact that the overwhelming majority of players want to participate has given EA leverage that has led to some tension among MMR companies who believe EA hasn’t paid for the amount of social media impressions generated by players who have opted in. Staff members at several schools are also somewhat chafed about the licensing process, telling Brown they felt pressure to get student-athletes to engage with deals. One SEC official says: “It wasn’t OneTeam that got 10,000 athletes to sign up so quickly…it was us. We did the legwork.” Why the pressure? Recruiting. Another staffer tells Brown: “If the coach feels like the game matters to recruits, and that being all in on the game will benefit the program, then they’re going to push that contract.” (link)

The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee has upheld the findings against former Tennessee Football HC Jeremy Pruitt “because Pruitt failed to demonstrate that there was a lack of information in the case record to support the decision by the Committee on Infractions. Additionally, he failed to show that no reasonable person would have made the same determinations based on the credibility of the witnesses and information. … Pruitt filed an appeal asserting that the findings of violations regarding monetary benefits were not supported by the case record, which in turn would then not support a finding that he provided false or misleading information during the investigation. Generally, he challenged the credibility of the information used by the Committee on Infractions to determine its decision. In addition to the appealed findings, the Committee on Infractions also found that Pruitt violated other recruiting, impermissible benefits and head coach responsibility rules. He did not appeal those other findings.” (link)

Ball State Baseball finally plays a home game today & shows off improvements to Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex, which include, “Daktronics installed the new audiovisual system…features an outfield video display that measures 18-feet high by 32.5-feet wide and a Sportsound 1500HD audio system. The padding and decor, installed by Sport Graphics of Indianapolis, accents a visual facelift that showcases the success of the Cardinals program.” (link)

Northwestern is still searching for a venue to host its home football games this year, according to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Patrick Finley. The Wildcats could play some games at SeatGeek Stadium or Wrigley Field but that “likely would allow the Wildcats to play only in November,” per Finley, who adds that “they have to get in line behind two tenants” at Soldier Field – the Bears and Fire. As reported earlier this week, Northwestern has studied building a temporary structure, but it’s “unclear how realistic it is for 2024.” Meanwhile, uncertainty about their home stadium “has clouded the ability of opponents to book nearby hotels for their traveling parties.” (link)
