SiriusXM host/former Ohio State student-athlete Ben Hartsock cites the disparate approaches being taken by Ole Miss and Kansas, noting Rebels AD Carter earlier this week explaining Vaught-Hemingway Stadium renovations were put on hold to focus more on NIL efforts. “Ole Miss is slowing facilities upgrades to buy players, while Kansas is spending $448M on a stadium upgrade. Will be an interesting case study in the coming years.” Jayhawks AD Travis Goff responds: “Unique time for sure. Reality is for us it’s both: must provide world-class facilities where our S-A’s spend their time developing, while offering great fan experience & driving revenue…PLUS ALSO building one of the best NIL programs to maximize our Jayhawks’ opportunities.” (link)

Regarding further MAC expansion, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports: “Industry sources have also told me if Western Kentucky could not be persuaded, the MAC is unlikely to target an FCS program in the immediate future.” With UMass off the board as a potential candidate for Conference USA, Brown notes C-USA’s most likely potential expansion candidates include Missouri State, Tarleton State, Eastern Kentucky, and Central Arkansas. Also from Brown: “UMass officials also confirmed to me that A-10 bylaws require the school to pay a $4M exit fee, with $1M due in 30 days, and the balance due before UMass formally joins the MAC. UMass will also owe the MAC an entrance fee, but I’m told some of the specific financial details between UMass and the MAC have not been completely finalized.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann highlights 10 key issues for Dartmouth men’s basketball moving forward, starting with the importance of the team voting 13-2 in favor of unionization. “The overwhelming vote signals the players are largely unified and that Dartmouth’s efforts to persuade the players to vote no—such as warning the team could be deemed ineligible by the NCAA or suggesting international players will run afoul of their F-1 visas—failed. Likewise, to the extent parents and friends urged the players to vote no, the players weren’t persuaded.” Also, Dartmouth is expected to request a stay from the NLRB to postpone collectively bargaining with the team until after the board has reviewed the school’s appeal, a process which could take months, if not more than a year. In the event there is no delay, Dartmouth must negotiate in good faith on “mandatory subjects of employment: wages, hours, insurance, health care, disciplinary procedures and support services. If Dartmouth refused to bargain, the union could file unfair labor practice charges with the NLRB.” The union could also file such charges in the event Dartmouth were to try and eliminate the men’s hoops program. Also from McCann: “If the NCAA disqualifies Dartmouth for paying players, or if Dartmouth refuses to pay players on account of NCAA membership rules, Dartmouth players could respond through the NLRB. But they have other legal options, including decertifying and suing on antitrust grounds.” Lots more. (link)

Some college football fans are wondering why the onus to pay players falls on them, according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, who is told by Georgia fan Brent Freeman: “No ill will toward the university or anything. My gripe is with the system. Asking us fans, I think, is wrong. I think it’s comical the money the NCAA brings in, and the fact they’re asking fans — and not just Georgia fans, but fans across the country — to give more, it’s just kind of comical. You can’t explain to me that this is the best way to do it.” The sentiment is becoming increasingly common, according to Walker Jones, executive director of the Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective, who tells Emerson: “It certainly is on the minds of all of us right now. I think there’s an understanding that the donor-led and fan-led model is not equitable and not sustainable. … I think it’s wise for these power conferences to figure out a revenue share and to figure out a way to collectively bargain. Which would then address donor fatigue, it would add sustainability and it would give the athletes the ability to truly capitalize on name, image and likeness, through revenue sharing.” Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) Founder Jason Belzer also weighs in and says donor fatigue was inevitable with the current setup: “Those people have now had to step up to pay not only the university’s regular operating costs but now the payroll of these teams. We’re now in the third year of NIL, and a lot of schools’ donors aren’t getting a return on their investment. Before you at least got your name on the building. Now you pay for the payroll, and your team doesn’t win.” More from Emerson. (link)

The Collegiate Commissioners Association confirms the December football signing period will be moved from the end of the month to the beginning – specifically December 4-6 this year. A new early signing period is also being considered for 2025 to add a three-day window starting the last Wednesday of June. The CCA is targeting June 2024 as the date for taking action on this proposal and says in a statement: “The CCA supports providing high school and two-year college prospective student-athletes with the opportunity to sign NLIs before coaches turn their focus to four-year transfers during the opening of the Division I transfer window in December.” (link)
|
By moving National Signing Day to the beginning of December, football coaches will likely be fired sooner than they are now, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who hears from one agent: “Now, the cycle is going to start a lot sooner. If they stumble out of the gates, even if it’s not their contract year, they could be one or two years in, a lot more moves are going to start being made. The pressure coaches are under is going to be tremendously amplified. It’s going to cause a real issue with the coaching stability in the marketplace.” Another agent posits that the “pressure is going to be so intense and look, the institutions are going to want to get ahead of the game, right? They’re going to want to start looking for the next guy sooner rather than later, especially if they know that they’re going to make a move. The other ramification of this is the school’s buyouts. Oh, they’re going to explode exponentially.” It’s also likely that this could result in collectives gaining more power, as one agent explains: “It used to be that if the coach was fired, then the whole recruitment class fell apart. Now, they fire the coach, and it doesn’t matter because this guy from the collective still called me and said that they’re going to honor my deal. … You and I both know collectives are really the backbone financially of roster management roster acquisition. I think some of these programs are going to have a lot more reliance on them.” (link)

Fox’s college football coverage will include a package of Friday night games starting this season. The AP’s Joe Reedy: “The college football package will fill a void for Fox on Friday nights during the fall when WWE’s ‘Friday Night SmackDown’ moves to USA Network in October. A couple of games could air on Fox in September with ‘SmackDown’ moving to FS1, which is what happened during the baseball playoffs and World Series. … The schedule of games, which will include matchups from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Mountain West conferences, likely won’t be announced until late May or early June after conferences and the networks hold their selection meetings.” (link)

Sexual assault survivor Brenda Tracy intends to sue Michigan State and former Spartans Football HC Mel Tucker seeking $75M in damages, arguing that her reputation was damaged by Tucker’s sexual harassment and subsequent threats, his release of her private text messages with her deceased best friend and business assistant, and the university’s failure to both prevent his misconduct and maintain the confidentiality of its investigation into her claim against him. The filings also allege her ability to continue charitable work has been hampered, her potential for future earnings has been damaged, and she has suffered severe psychological and emotional harm. Tracy is seeking $50M for herself and $25M for her nonprofit. MSU declined to comment. (link)

West Virginia has received a “generous gift” from alumnus and Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick to support the baseball team. In recognition of the gift, WVU will rename the Monongalia County Ballpark as Kendrick Family Ballpark at the Monongalia County Baseball Complex. Mountaineers AD Wren Baker: "What a giant step forward for Mountaineer baseball to add this year-round facility to our training and practice schedule. Ken Kendrick is a friend to WVU, our athletics department and Mountaineer baseball, and it is with great pride that this ballpark be renamed to honor his family and his legacy. The unionization of college athletes is “going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg,” according to U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who appeared on Fox News yesterday to voice his displeasure over the NLRB’s Dartmouth decision. Tuberville went on to say that he and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) had kept references to unionization and employment status out of their bill at the urging of Democrats in the Senate. “That’s the reason we haven’t gotten (the bill) to the floor. But this will absolutely kill college sports. You know, the last time I looked, they’re not employees. These students are student-athletes. And if you want the federal government involved and ruin something, you try to make the student-athletes employees. … Coaches right now have a little bit of control of the football team or the basketball team or gymnastics. Problem is, [if] unions get involved, they will go on strike right before a championship game. They will hold hostage the people that are paying the bills.” (link)

Helmet communication won’t solve the problem of sign-stealing, nor is it being universally praised among coaches, according to FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett, who is told by one coach that sign stealing may only become worse. "The NFL is all huddle, so talking in one headset makes sense. We are no huddle. Having one person talking will not eliminate the need for signals. Sign-stealing will be at an all-time high." Texas Tech HC Joey McGuire adds: "The current proposal will not fix the problems in college football. We should not limit this technology to just one player on each side of the ball. We also shouldn't always compare our game to the NFL. Our game is special. Let's keep it that way and put together a proposal that gets it right the first time and not fix it years later." Another coach believes helmet communication will incentivize teams to go slower. For instance, the coordinator can call a play, watch how the defense aligns, then make an adjustment with 16 or 17 seconds left on the play clock, forcing the defense to adjust to their adjustment without the defensive coordinator able to speak to the mike linebacker. "Slower teams have a different advantage because they can make formation adjustments after mics are killed forcing the defense to 'manually' adjust.” (link)

In a lengthy deep dive into whether private equity is worth the risk, Financial Times’ Robbin Wigglesworth notes it’s important to remember that “large institutional investors are buying private equity’s future returns, not its historical record. And there are a lot of indications that returns are going to be much lower in the coming decades. First, the industry is far larger today, and is sitting on an astonishing $2.59T of capital it is struggling to deploy. There’s therefore more competition for the sweetest deals, ‘pass-the-parcel’ LBO fund-to-LBO fund transactions are becoming more common, and returns will inevitably be eroded. … Second, one of the dominant factors behind overall private equity returns over the past four decades was declining interest rates. That has now gone into reverse.” Wigglesworth goes on to contend that “despite private equity insisting that they improve companies, Bain’s latest report on the industry estimates that ‘nearly all the value creation’ in private equity-owned companies between 2012 and 2022 actually came from revenue growth and multiple expansion. ‘Margin expansion barely registers,’ the consultancy noted drily. With interest rates now higher and unlikely to return to zero — though they’re unlikely to return to the 1980s highs either — the private equity golden era is almost certainly over.” (link)

North Texas AD Jared Mosley fields questions from fans, including one about how UNT is working to improve men’s basketball attendance. He explains: “We constantly evaluate this challenge of increasing engagement both with our student population and the community at large. Both have unique challenges, and our marketing team and staff are constantly working to ensure ticketing strategies, external marketing efforts and in-game production are aligned to ensure people want to attend a game. Just this past year alone we have increased our marketing budget by over $200K. This includes investments to target students on campus, improve tailgate and live music experiences around athletic contests, enhanced in-game production and entertainment, and leaning into very targeted marketing campaigns through social media.” As conference alignment continues to shift, Mosley says UNT’s “plan currently is to elevate our programs to the top third of the American Athletic Conference in resources which we feel will allow us to consistently compete for conference championships. Consistent competitive success is critical for future realignment opportunities and our recent years elevating our resources to top the third of CUSA confirm this model leads to improvement of on-field performance.” He also points out that “given the size of our alumni base we have a great opportunity. Collectively, we need everyone who is currently engaged to help us in pulling more people into the fold. We can deliver in every other key metric listed above (attendance, donations, number of donors, television ratings), but if we cannot get the improvement in engagement, it will be difficult to add the value needed for inclusion in the new landscape of college realignment.” (link)

The Tampa Bay Times’ Joey Knight points out that USF’s last three men’s basketball crowds – all sellouts – have each been worth ~$50K more in revenue than average crowds in the past. Specifically, Knight estimates the Bulls’ AAC home opener against Temple on January 4, which drew 3,388 fans, generated $23,716 in revenue, whereas the last three games have generated $71-74K each. “Translation: The last three crowds would have drawn $147,700 more than what three Temple crowds would have drawn. That’s enough to pay the year’s salary of a lower-level assistant. Or perhaps finance the annual travel of a non-revenue sport. Or cover a recruiting budget. The men’s hoops team spent $130,581 on recruiting in the 2022-23 fiscal year, according to the school’s NCAA report. Toss in increased booster donations (a surefire byproduct of the Bulls’ 23-5 season), an uptick in game-day alcohol sales (more to celebrate this season) and more novelty items being purchased, and the coffers are cushioned even more.” (link)

Former Northeastern/Tennessee/Penn State Track & Field AC Steve Waithe was sentenced to five years in prison for “setting up sham social media and email accounts in an attempt to trick women, including some he coached, into sending him nude or seminude photos of themselves.” Waithe last year pleaded guilty to 12 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and one count of computer fraud. According to prosecutors, Waithe, while at Northeastern, also requested the cellphones of women student-athletes under the pretense of filming them at practice and meets, but he instead covertly sent himself explicit photos of the women that had previously been saved on their phones. Sportradar yesterday released the results of its annual integrity report, which analyzed findings coming from active monitoring of about 850K events across 70 sports last year. Overall, results were on par with those from 2022, with suspected manipulation found in 0.21% of events, or one in every 467. New this year, however, was the use of AI, which assisted with 73% of the flagged events, more than double the previous year. Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher notes that “most of Sportradar’s flagged events came from outside of North America, with Europe, Asia, and South America combining for 1,186 of the company’s 1,329 suspicious matches. Just 35 were from North America.” (link)

Genius Sports’ revenue rose by 21% to $413M in 2023, exceeding initial guidance of $391M. Meanwhile, the company’s 2023 adjusted EBITDA more-than-tripled to $53M, also exceeding initial guidance of $41M. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey: “Of Genius’ three operating segments, betting technology, content and services remained the largest and the fastest-growing, posting a 31% advance in 2023 to $274.2M. In particular, gross gaming revenue in the U.S. increased about 50% last year, pushing the country to about a 35% share of Genius’ global business.” (link, link)

Authentic Brand Group, which owns Sports Illustrated, will receive a $50M exit fee from 888 Holdings, which has opted to end its relationship with SI Sportsbook. Sportico’s Jacob Feldman reports Authentic “will embrace a ‘Gambling 2.0’ strategy, attempting to distribute Sports Illustrated content on a non-exclusive basis to other sportsbook operators. … Gambling-related royalties currently represent approximately 10% of Authentic’s SI-connected revenues, which itself makes up a small portion of the company’s licensing empire. In its editorial licensing deal with Arena Group Holdings, Authentic set up a carve-out allowing it to capitalize betting content, while incentivizing the publisher to create such stories.” As such, Awful Announcing’s Andrew Bucholtz points out Authentic doesn’t necessarily “need SI’s editorial operations to make a huge amount of money. … But they need the overall brand to continue as something that’s liked and respected, which it generally still is despite all the recent challenges. Thus, that will be notable to watch during the ongoing discussions over who will get to operate SI…as well as who will work there.” In addition to the $50M payout, Awful Announcing’s Ben Koo notes ABG could also receive $45M from Arena Group after the magazine licensing deal fell apart. “That’s $95M JUST in deals that went bad,” almost as much as the $110M ABG paid for SI in the first place. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says there is “no reason to think” the U.S. is headed toward a recession and suggested to the House Financial Services Committee that rate cuts are on the horizon this year – but not until officials have “gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably.” Powell adds: “We want to see a little bit more data so that we can become confident. We’re not looking for better inflation readings than we’ve had. We’re just looking for more of them.” (link)
