Lots of action on Capitol Hill today, where the House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing on student-athlete employment and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) convened a roundtable discussion nominally focused on NIL but which Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes was more about employment and revenue sharing. Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban during his opening remarks at Cruz’s roundtable said he believes that NIL is a “great concept” but booster involvement is creating a “pay-for-play model.” Saban also noted an NFL coach informed him that players are coming into the league “less developed and with more entitlements” since the advent of NIL. Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne also participated in the discussion and warned that “if it weren’t for football, we would not have 21 sports at the University of Alabama. We do not want to see college sports lose women’s sports and Olympics sports." He also explained what college sports leaders are looking for in Congressional legislation, including “safe havens” regarding employee status, Title IX and antitrust. Meanwhile, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips told senators that student-athletes are receiving more benefits today than they ever have, adding: "I think if you classify them as employees a bunch of those benefits go away." He also said if student-athletes become employees, then universities can pay athletes in sports that make revenue and, to satisfy Title IX, would pay an “equivalent number of female athletes.” The rest could be cut. “You can go from 28 to 6 sports in one fiscal year.” Saban advocated for a revenue-sharing model that does not codify student-athletes as employees: “If we revenue-shared a certain amount, it’d be the same (in each state). That’s the issue right now. We don’t have that. We have collectives in some states raising huge amounts of money and competing against those who don’t have those kinds of funds to pay players. … You’re going to create a caste system where the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer." Cruz, who in the fall pegged the chances of a congressional bill at 60-40, has lowered his prediction to 50-50 “only because we’re running out of time” in an election year. He believes Congress has a two-month window to pass something. More from Dellenger. (link)

NCAA CMO Brian Hainline announces his retirement, effective May 31. Hainline, who was appointed as the NCAA’s first chief medical officer in 2013, also founded and oversaw the NCAA Sport Science Institute. (link)

Arizona State Deputy AD Jean Boyd talks about his decision to retire in May and tells 247Sports’ Chris Karpman that neither the investigation into the football program’s recruiting violations nor the school’s AD search factor into his departure. Instead, he says his desire to live full-time with his wife of less than two years and with her children requires him to do so in Colorado. "Over the holiday window of time, my wife and I spent a lot of time contemplating [the] best next steps for our family development. And it became clear to me that with the dynamics of being in two different places, changes that are happening, et cetera, that it was time for me to close out this chapter of my ASU career. … The reality of it is my entire adult life, not just career but life, has been shaped by ASU, with many unbelievable, unbelievably positive and progressive experiences, and obviously, some very challenging and negative ones as well. If it weren't for the family [situation], I would continue in a reinvigorated manner to try to help my alma mater be as dynamic as it can be moving forward." (link)

Rutgers announces the creation of Scarlet Assets Management Company (SAMCO) LLC, a private and wholly owned subsidiary of the university. SAMCO will “manage traditional digital and physical in-venue signage and broadcast advertising inventory as part of a full suite of commercial assets. It will deliver unparalleled access to gameday experiences and premium offerings, helping to strengthen the Rutgers Athletics brand. SAMCO will also collaborate with corporate partners to identify opportunities for student-athletes to serve as their brand ambassadors. In addition to its work with Rutgers Athletics, SAMCO will manage university-wide sponsorship and marketing efforts.” Scarlet Knights Assoc. AD for Marketing and Business Development Lisa Tirrell will serve as the president and CEO of SAMCO. Scarlet Knights AD Pat Hobbs: "The collegiate landscape is changing dramatically. Athletic departments will need to be innovative and entrepreneurial. SAMCO positions us to act quickly and creatively to grow our revenues in the years ahead." Also of note, the Scarlet Knights will “continue its collaboration with Learfield through a unique partnership to offer data and technology services, national sales support, and radio broadcasts to help amplify fan engagement, outreach, and revenue generation.” (link)

+ The New Mexico State Board of Regents has voted unanimously to restart the presidential search after finding that none of the five finalists were right for the role. Regent Ammu Devasthali: “After careful consideration, I do not believe that any of the current finalists fully meet the needs of New Mexico State University at this critical juncture. Finding the right leader is paramount. While the presented candidates possess impressive qualifications and are assets to their respective institutions, we have yet to see the next leader of our university.” (link)

Murray State AD Nico Yantko pens a letter to fans clarifying the NCAA’s new guidance on NIL restrictions and enforcement and notes that “recruits and their families can now negotiate and assess market values from various third-parties affiliated with schools they are considering.” Yantko adds: “Now more than ever, it is time to rally behind our men’s basketball program and invest in the critical resources, especially NIL, that it will take for us to find the success that we have all come to expect at Murray State. … We must anticipate and be prepared to manage the relevant variables that will define the future of college basketball and the NCAA Tournament. The NIL landscape is rapidly changing and is subject to change in the coming months, so I will continue to communicate as frequently as required to grow our position in college basketball and continue our transition into the Missouri Valley Conference.” (link)

Sunday’s Iowa-Nebraska Big Ten Women’s Basketball Championship averaged 3.02M viewers on CBS. The game peaked at 4.45M viewers, and Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis notes the game “surged four-fold over last year’s Ohio State-Iowa title game on ESPN.” The Hawkeyes’ overtime victory nearly drew more viewers than Saturday’s high-profile Duke-North Carolina game, which garnered 3.08M, and was the most-watched women’s college basketball game on CBS in 25 years. The SEC Championship between LSU and South Carolina brought 1.96M viewers to ESPN, more than double the viewership of last year’s final. Meanwhile, 1.44M tuned in to watch the USC-Stanford Pac-12 Tournament final. (link, link)

Fox Sports President of Insight and Analytics Michael Mulvihill points out that “it’s notable that the growth in women’s CBB viewing hasn’t come at the expense of the men’s game. Men’s CBB viewing across all networks – which is an average of over 1000 games – is up a little over last year and 21-22. The surge in interest in women’s CBB is all additive.” (link)

Apollo Global Management has reached out to a special committee formed by Paramount Global about a possible takeover or asset purchase, according to Axios’ Sara Fischer, who adds: “Apollo is said to be evaluating a deal only with Paramount,” and “it’s also possible that Apollo could wind up bidding only on select assets.” Fischer also points out that “Apollo could face regulatory pushback due to CBS' local broadcast stations. Regulators killed a proposed takeover of Tegna by Apollo affiliate Standard General last year.” (link)

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says he wouldn’t take the prospect of a recession “off the table” and believes the Federal Reserve should hold off on cutting interest rates. “The world is pricing in a soft landing, at probably 70-80%. Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois Q&As with the Arizona Daily Star’s Justin Spears and outlines the five priorities on which she will focus during the early part of her tenure. They include people, university alignment, budget, infrastructure and external constituents. Reed-Francois explains she has had everyone fill out a SWOT analysis and has begun “meeting with every single staff member. I want to find out about their motivations. Why do they work at the University of Arizona? Who are they as people? We’ve got to get to know our people.” Reed-Francois also explains: “I have to analyze our budget. It’s not so that we can just balance a budget. We have to build a model business. As an athletic director, you’re the CEO of a $150M company. You gotta build a business model that is based upon your core values, the student-athletes have to be at the center of what we do — and make no mistake about it, we’re a high-performing business.” There are also three to five special projects the department will focus on this quarter: “No. 1 being NIL. We have to analyze what’s working, what’s not working and how can we shore that up? Are we skating to where the puck is going? Or are we satisfied with where the puck is? ... I don’t know what’s working here — I’m only on Day 7 — and what’s not. That’s going to be part of that analysis.” More from Reed-Francois (link, link)

Wasserman CEO Casey Wasserman tells The Ringer’s Bill Simmons he believes college football is at a fork in the road: “Let’s not be shy. The Big Ten and the SEC look a whole lot like the AFC and the NFC, and that’s not an accident.” Wasserman also says college football brings in around $3B in revenue but is worth upwards of $7B. Puck’s John Ourand subsequently observes: “The big money guys in sports, people like Wasserman and RedBird’s Gerry Cardinale, all see college sports as undervalued. … Right now, the economic environment is truly extraordinary to behold, almost like watching a new currency or pharmaceutical become unregulated. As the NCAA essentially recedes into oblivion, colleges are spending on facilities, coaches, and travel while players are cashing in on name-image-likeness deals and entering the transfer portal like it’s a 7-11.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde sounds off on reports of the Big Ten and SEC’s College Football Playoff’s revenue distribution proposal: “This is an inevitable self-fulfilling prophecy of those two breaking away by just taking more and more and more away from everyone else. And it's soulless, it is gluttonous, it is ruinous and it also seems inevitable.” Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel adds: “Greg Sankey and Tony Petitti – I'm not sure Petitti cares, but maybe Sankey does – and some of these ADs in their leagues that are pushing for this need to really take a thought on whether they want to go down in history as the people that – ended is a bit much – but dramatically altered how college athletics works in this country. … Conference realignment and uneven revenue distribution and ridiculous advantages and getting away from competition and some level of fair play is what will end this operation, and that's what they're treading on. Maybe they don't care. Maybe they just want more guaranteed money for themselves. Maybe they don't care if the Pac-12 is gone, they don’t care if the ACC is gone, they don't care if the Big 12 is gone. They don’t really care. That’s fine. I can't get them to care, but they will go down as the ones that killed this. Because right now they can confuse the public and confuse the politicians…[but] it's conference realignment and it's stuff like this.” Wetzel goes on to note he has no problem with an uneven revenue distribution so long as it’s not codified. “The Big Ten and SEC are going to dominate this playoff. We know that. That’s fine. … Go earn your money, but once you start doing this, you are telling those leagues – everyone in that league – get the hell out of your league.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

The decision to keep the Pac-12 Network running raises several questions, according to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake, who says the “core expectation is that the entity will pick up a variety of outside production projects and continue to do work for Oregon State and Washington State. The Mountain West Conference has some minimum requirements for broadcasts for Oregon State and Washington State next year. That content will create work. Also, it’s possible the Pac-12 Network could pick up some production work with Apple, Amazon, and others. Sources at some of the departing Pac-12 schools tell me that they may need production work, too. Would it be ironic to see them contract with the Pac-12 Network? There’s a business buried in the network. How big? We’ll see. …I could see the Pac-12 streaming some content on the web next year. I like that idea. However, I would pump the brakes about seeing the network available as a channel for traditional providers. None of those distributors are going to carry the Pac-12 Network next year.” (link)

Student Athlete NIL (SANIL) CEO Jason Belzer breaks down the men’s basketball NIL market based on data from 50+ programs managed by SANIL and notes the top 10% of collectives, which are represented by schools from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, BIG EAST and SEC, will be over $3M in total comp next year, with a median at $1.25M. Additionally, the top 10% of MBB players will make over $750K, with a median of $175K. The graphic also shows that starters in the group of conferences with the lowest NIL will still earn a median of $15K. Full breakdown. (link)

Progressive was once again the top advertiser during men’s national TV college basketball games during the 2023-24 regular season. Citing data from iSpot.tv, SBJ’s Austin Karp notes the company spent $2.9M this season, down 21% from $3.7M last season. Meanwhile, Capital One, the second-highest spender once again, also decreased its spend from over $3M last year to $2.8M this season. Geico was next at $2.3M, followed by AT&T Wireless ($2.07M), Allstate ($2.06M), Lexus ($1.74M), Jersey Mike’s ($1.73M), Ram Trucks ($1.71M), Liberty Mutual ($1.59M) and Continental Tire ($1.57M). The NAACP published an open letter yesterday urging Black college athletes to “reconsider their decisions” to attend a public university in Florida after the University of Florida dismantled its DEI department pursuant to the state’s Stop WOKE Act. From the letter: “Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made no effort to conceal his administration's devaluation of Black America. … This imbalance of power and profit demands a response, particularly because these institutions reap considerable financial benefits from the very individuals they fail to stand by in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion." NAACP President/CEO Derrick Johnson: "Florida's rampant anti-Black policies are a direct threat to the advancement of our young people and their ability to compete in a global economy. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are paramount to ensuring equitable and effective educational outcomes. The value Black, and other college athletes bring to large universities is unmatched. If these institutions are unable to completely invest in those athletes, it's time they take their talents elsewhere. The NAACP will remain unwavering in our efforts to hold Governor Ron DeSantis, and all oppressive elected officials accountable for their attempts to unravel our democracy." (link)

NBA officials are considering the possibility of launching a standalone league in Europe. According to Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, the NBA has explored several options involving FIBA and the EuroLeague as it looks to expand its presence in the continent and has “been approached by stakeholders on several ways to expand the European business outside of a EuroLeague partnership. Any new property would be launched in cooperation with FIBA, which has a long relationship with the NBA and on whose central board NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum sits.” Last month, the league hired investment bank Raine Group to evaluate its opportunities in Europe, and one proposal involves an NBA- and FIBA-operated league similar to what the NBA has done in Africa with the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The NBA currently generates a “few hundred million dollars in Europe” but thinks the basketball ecosystem in Europe and Middle East could be worth as much as $3B in annual revenue, per Raine’s projections. The Buffalo Sabres have informed season ticket holders who have sold the “majority of their tickets/events since 2022” that they “need to purchase a state-required $5K reseller license before they can renew their membership” pursuant to “recent ticket reseller laws in New York State” that caused the team to change its season ticket membership terms and conditions. A team spokesperson says less than 1% of the season ticket base – many of whom live outside the state – received the communication. Season ticket holder Mike Czajkowski has subsequently filed a complaint against the Sabres with the New York State Attorney General for unfair business practices. He acknowledges he sells many of his Sabres and Buffalo Bandits (National Lacrosse League) tickets but notes the club offers an option to sell through Ticketmaster. “It’s almost like they encourage it. … And that’s what I’m doing, so why is it all of a sudden an issue?” Czajkowski, a season ticket holder since 1995, also asks: “Where’s the loyalty from the other side?” (link)
