GCAC Commissioner Kiki Baker Barnes sits down with HBCU Sports’ Kenn Rashad to dive more into the rebrand to the HBCUAC and its partnership with Hope Credit Union. The naming decision was a back-and-forth between administrators and student-athletes, with the students being proponents of the HBCUAC. Baker Barnes: “I always said to our presidents that at least you can always say that you sided with the students and that the student voice was paramount in this process. We thought it was edgy. For me personally, I wanted to own the search engines. Every time you put HBCU and athletic, once we go there, we’ll always show up first.” On Hope Credit Union, Baker Barnes says they will “go down in history as the conference’s first real partner” as the largest sponsorship in the league’s history. Jamestown hires South Dakota (NCAA DI) Director of Operations & Player Development Casey Bruggeman as the Jimmies’ new Men’s Basketball HC. AD Austin Hieb: “Casey was on our radar early on in the process, and the more we learned about him, the more impressed we were. His emphasis on culture stuck out from the beginning. Casey's knowledge of the region and familiarity with the NSIC are huge positives as we move to the NSIC. We are excited to have Casey leading our men's basketball program and think he's an incredible addition to the University of Jamestown athletic department.” (link)

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has rescinded the state's NIL Executive Order to "preserve the competitiveness of North Carolina post-secondary institutions in college athletics,” calling it “no longer necessary” in light of Tennessee vs. NCAA. (link)

Rockhurst (NCAA DII) AD Kristy Bayer pens for BOSCA on the transition from coaching to administration and the decision, preparation and aftermath of such a move. Bayer relays her decision came from her loss of excitement with the “rest of coaching,” outside of game day. Her preparation for a transition began early in her career, by serving in other roles, serving in committees and communicating her goals with her AD. “My strongest piece of advice is to serve on committees. […] You will expand your network, while gaining valuable knowledge about your organization. […] As I was preparing for the AD interview, I was discouraged because I didn’t have a lot of fundraising experience. I mentioned this to Tim Selgo, a DII legend and my former AD when I played at Grand Valley (NCAA DII). He said, ‘What do you mean you don’t have fundraising experience?! You were a successful head coach for 14 years. Your recruiting is your fundraising. You have years of experience.’ You can sell. You can speak in front of groups. You can persuade people. This is an underrated skill, that is greatly transferable to external roles in athletics.” On coping with the loss of a coaching identity, Bayer: “You will need to adopt a mindset shift. As a coach, you were an advocate for your players, budget, court time, and everything necessary for your team to be successful. As an administrator, not only do you look out for the entire department, but your decisions and actions need to be in the best interests of the entire university. You don’t have a singular domain anymore. You need to contribute to the collective good of university operations. […] Your path may forever lie in coaching or you may be deciding your next step. You may have transitioned out, but in your heart, mind, and body, you will always be a coach.” (link)

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says there is “no reason to think” the U.S. is headed toward a recession and suggested to the House Financial Services Committee that rate cuts are on the horizon this year – but not until officials have “gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably.” Powell adds: “We want to see a little bit more data so that we can become confident. We’re not looking for better inflation readings than we’ve had. We’re just looking for more of them.” (link); In a second day of testimony on Capitol Hill, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated his position that the central bank was looking for greater confidence that inflation was returning to its 2% target, but he went one step further in noting how soon interest rates may come down: “When we do get that confidence, and we’re not far from it, it will be appropriate to dial back.” Powell went on to say he thought interest rates “now are well into restrictive territory” and “well above neutral,” an expected rate that would occur when supply and demand are in balance.
