Colorado came back from a 51-point deficit to take home the NCAA skiing championship. Buffs HC Jana Weinberger: "It feels surreal. That was very close, very nerve racking, everybody did what we had to do. We came back from our not-so-great day on Thursday and it turned out well." (link)

TCU clinched the program's fourth national championship in rifle, edging out host West Virginia by a score of 4,732 to 4,729. (link)

The latest from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on College Football Playoff discussions: “We have a reality for the College Football Playoff that says we need to be in conversations. And it’s been a four-year work project for me that others decided to just put on the shelf for basically two years. Part of my frustration is the details that we’re trying to grind through right now, we should’ve been grinding through back in 2022 or 2023, not 2024. But problems yield in effort, that’s a mantra of mine. [...] I told our ADs, I quoted (Mississippi State AD) Zac Selmon. So when Zac made a football change, in his press conference, he said unless it comes from me, don’t believe it. While I appreciate anonymous sources and the unnamed AD in this conference and unnamed AD in that conference, I told our athletics directors [and] our presidents and chancellors, unless it’s coming from me, don’t believe it and I’ll tell you when it’s true. It’s a high-level piece of work. [...] We’ve done something great with the College Football Playoff. We’ve clearly benefitted from them, I think the game has benefitted from the Playoff. There’s a future opportunity to continue to grow and build.” (link)

In an in-depth interview with the Tallahassee Democrat’s Gerlad Thomas, Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes shares one of the biggest lessons learned in her first year leading the department: “I know that I come in every day and make decisions for the future of our athletes first and coaches second. But I learned that you can’t always please everybody. While everyone may not understand or like my decisions, I sleep well at night knowing that the student-athletes have been the center of all the decisions that I’ve made. And I’ve got to be good with whether people like it or not.” Also from Sykes: “I’ve learned that it’s better to go slow than to try to go fast and not have anyone come along with you. Our supporters feel the need to be included in many processes.” Lots more on the Rattlers fundraising efforts and the five-point plan to balance the budget by the end of the fiscal year. (link)

Economist Andy Schwarz outlines what student-athlete unionization could look like for the New York Times’ Joe Nocera & Ephrat Livni: “You would have conference-level unions to negotiate the terms of employment and to enshrine in contracts the rights and duties of an athlete. In my view, the schools would provide the education and the conferences would be employing the athletes to be participants on a television program.” ESPN Men’s Basketball analyst Jay Bilas also provides perspective: “This is really simple. Just have a contract between the athlete and the school. Just like the rest of American business does. [...] At first, some players will be overpaid and some others might be underpaid, but pretty soon, a market will be established, and you’ll know what players are worth.” (link)

ESPN Men’s Basketball analyst Jay Bilas continues on the potential for NIL-based compensation to become standard for not just in-season events, but also post-season tournaments: “The money, that million dollars per team, goes into the university’s collective or into the school’s collective. And that way, it goes to the players. Like, who wouldn’t want to play in that? Rather than going into a tournament and spending money to get there, it costs you money, you’re not really making that much. Now, the players are making money, and it’s going to – as this gets bigger, and I think it will, it’s going to go into March. And can you imagine getting an invitation from a March tournament where you can make into your collective $2 [million] or $3 million? You go to the NCAA tournament, your players get a t-shirt? That’s going to be a thing, and the NCAA is gonna have to respond. Revenue sharing is coming, and they don’t want to admit it. But it’s coming, and now it’s here.” A bit more from On3 & Bilas’ comments from yesterday’s College GameDay. (link)

Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny discusses the league's Women's Basketball Tournament in Minneapolis & leveraging momentum created by Iowa student-athlete Caitlin Clark: "Timing is everything. It’s making sure that it’s not just this fleeting moment in time, but that you’re actually using this to attract new fans and younger fans who are going to like what they see and come back year after year regardless of where the tournament is." Thursday's second round games televised by the Big Ten Network were the highest rated in the history of the event. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit digs into the NIL efforts at Indiana State, where third year Men’s Basketball HC Josh Schertz and sophomore student-athlete Robbie Avila have led the Sycamores to a 28-5 record and likely an NCAA tourney bid. Libit: “The team’s national intrigue as a prospective Cinderella story has been signal-boosted by the unique allure of Avila, ISU’s roly-poly, bicep-tattooed, spectacle-adorned big man, whose methodical, below-the-rim guile has earned comparisons to Denver Nuggets MVP Nikola Jokić. It doesn’t take a financier like [ISU booster and former Board of Trustees President Mike] Alley to know that keeping both Avila and Schertz in Terre Haute next year is going to take more money—and right quick.” To that end, roughly 50 ISU alumni and boosters gathered last week to work on that, with the goal of having at least $300K in the bank for next year, with the intention of offering Avila $75K-$90K. Avila currently makes $30K through Crossroad of Champions plus a Chevy Blazer from York Chevrolet. Avila’s agent, Joseph Nery: “Robbie loves Indiana State, but like any college athlete, if there is an opportunity to capitalize on that, you want to do that—you would be crazy not to.” (link)

According to an examination of the team’s season by The Athletic, Temple men’s basketball played at least three other games that also generated irregular betting patterns, aside from the Temple vs. UAB one flagged by U.S. Integrity on Thursday. The other games were against Memphis, Rice and Tulsa. Specifically on the Owls vs. Blazers matchup, gambling expert and former casino executive Richard Schuetz offered this: “It’s like a stock price. You have buyers and sellers, and you settle on an equilibrium price. There’s nothing going, no earnings call, no disaster, no adverse legal ruling. And all of a sudden it went up 38 percent. Well, what would you think? Somebody’s got some information that the market doesn’t have.” Of note, from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Chris Vannini: “The betting patterns around the three additional games are not evidence of illicit behavior by anyone involved with the games, and no one has been publicly accused of wrongdoing. But they are the types of patterns that regulators look for when attempting to identify suspicious behavior.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Senior Advisor/former Virginia AD Craig Littlepage sits down with NCAA VP for Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman to discuss her career in college sports, her thoughts on what makes a successful basketball coach, the continued momentum of women’s basketball and more. Holzman remarks that despite the sport’s significant growth, particularly in the last few years, there “still feels as though, in some spaces, there’s still an undertone of, ‘Oh, it's just kind of a blip on the screen. Can women sports or women's basketball really sustain this? Should we continue to invest at this level? Are we going to really realize the potential?’ So instead of having the attitude of being opportunistic…it's a constant proving of yourself.” Holzman also talks about the myriad factors that have contributed to the growth in women’s sports overall, including the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s call for equal pay, student-athletes highlighting the resource inequities during March Madness in the COVID year, and Americans’ desire for community coming out of the pandemic, and notes that “in women’s basketball, because of all that, there is now greater exposure that allows storylines of our student-athletes to lead the way – and the storylines of our programs and our coaches…and to have that also with an elevated caliber of play on the court we've seen in women's basketball, the competitive parity and depth is better than it's ever been.” Full Q&A. Fitch Ratings warns that delays in processing FAFSA applications could threaten the credit and even the viability of small private colleges that serve low-income students. “For colleges that are almost solely dependent on student-generated revenues, this enrollment uncertainty is wreaking havoc on their already tight budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year. For colleges that suffer enrollment losses, even marginal, one-time disruptions in producing a robust incoming freshman class will dampen finances for several years.” (link)

Fubo Co-Founder/CEO David Gandler explains the overall goal of the company’s lawsuit against Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery over their announced sports streamer is to level the licensing and fee playing field between Fubo and other licensees of sports networks. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey points out that Fubo’s ad revenue rose 14% in the most recent quarter while the other companies struggled. Additionally, Fubo experienced double-digit growth in its subscriber base. Gandler contends that is not only a sign that Fubo has a legitimate business model, but that the company ultimately is a benefit to everyone in the sports rights industry. The problem, Gandler continues, involves the “anti-competitive behaviors” of the other companies. Fubo says it pays about $200M annually in fees to carry stations it sees little evidence people care about, such as Disney’s National Geographic and FXM. Cable carriers such as Spectrum have been able to drop those channels in recent years, but Fubo says it still must buy them with ESPN. Furthermore, Gandler says the premium Fubo pays comes with more restrictions than other services. For instance, Fubo says it is prohibited from compiling highlights of games for its cloud DVR service, but YouTube TV gets to. “We just want to compete fairly. Last year we paid out about $1.2B in fees, but we have to get something in return. I understand we execute well, so they think we can handle it, but the bullying has got to stop.” More from Coffey. NFL Hall of Famer and former Florida star RB Emmitt Smith reacts to Florida’s decision to eliminate its DEI programs, pursuant to a law recently signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, writing on X: “I’m utterly disgusted by UF’s decision and the precedent that it sets. We cannot continue to believe and trust that a team of leaders all made up of the same background will make the right decision when it comes to equality and diversity. History has already proven that is not the case. Instead of showing courage and leadership, we continue to fail based on systemic issues and with this decision, UF has conformed to the political pressures of today’s time. To MANY minority athletes at UF, please be aware and vocal about this decision by the University who is now closing doors on other minorities without any oversight.” The Athletic’s Jim Trotter applauds Smith’s sentiment but believes there is room to go further: “Beyond speaking out, minority athletes, parents, coaches and business leaders should take action against universities, conferences and states that do not respect racial and cultural diversity.” Trotter notes there are no Black Football HCs currently in the SEC despite what the league says are ongoing efforts to become more inclusive. Meanwhile, one college coach tells Trotter change needs to start at the top: “If the NFL guys (boycotted), then college coaches would follow. But everybody is scared. They’re scared to repost stuff on social media that they think won’t be becoming of them. They’re scared of retaliation. They saw what the NFL did to Kaepernick.” Lots more. (link)

Sean Frazier, VP & Director of Athletics at NIU, stops by 1Q to discuss a few items on his mind as college athletics continues to evolve.

Former Wisconsin AD/Football HC Barry Alvarez with strong thoughts on the impact of NIL during a radio interview with ESPN Wisconsin: “It’s going to ruin college football as we know it. It’s out of control and unsustainable. The paying of the players. It’s supposed to be illegal for coaches to use cash to recruit players, but that’s exactly what is happening. [...] I just see the whole thing blowing up unless we have some drastic changes. It’s just out of control, unsustainable, it’s going to screw up college football.” (link)

The Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency confirmed to Sports Illustrated on Friday that Loyola (MD) men’s basketball squad is the subject of an inquiry into unusual wagering activity. A statement from the school: “Loyola was made aware of an individual’s gambling violation that was promptly reported to the NCAA. The individual was immediately removed from the program, and the NCAA accepted the self-report and took no further action. The conference office investigated to ensure the integrity of League contests by reaching out to U.S. Integrity, the conference’s monitoring partner. U.S. Integrity analyzed contests and no anomalies were discovered. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency provided contact information on operators licensed in the state, and those operators confirmed all previously known information.” The Greyhounds finished 7-25 this season and Head Coach Tavaras Hardy will not return. Front Office Sports broke the news on an eight-team in-season Men’s Basketball tournament to be played next season in Las Vegas with each program receiving at least $1M for NIL deals & the winning program doubling to $2M. EverWonder Studio & AND1 CEO of Basketball Seth Berger are behind the effort, dubbed “Players Era.” Programs reportedly in the mix to participate include Alabama, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Houston, Kansas, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State, St. John’s, Syracuse & Virginia. On3’s Eric Prisbell catches up with multiple men’s basketball stakeholders to discuss the most likely path for NCAA Tournament expansion and notes: “In the short term – with the short term being the operative words – stakeholders express cautious optimism that they can thread a needle with an evolved structure that entails modest expansion to appease power leagues while also maintaining tournament access for conference tournament champions from one-bid leagues. The long-term realistic expectation? No one interviewed for this story could project that with any confidence.” One source tells Prisbell: “It’s a balancing act. There’s a tipping point here, where those [Power 4] conferences and schools could really have backlash. It’s unnecessary because there’s a way to achieve some balance here. Modest expansion that keeps the magic of this event whole while still providing more access, more opportunity.” Meanwhile, another source tells Prisbell that expanding the tournament would only marginally add value to the property. “If you think regular-season men’s basketball has limited media value now, expanding the tournament might just wipe it out completely. Why bother to watch the regular season if everyone is going to make the tournament? Why not make the entire season one giant triple-elimination tournament? Once a school is eliminated, it can drop down to the triple-elimination NIT tournament. Once eliminated from that, it can drop down to some other tournament.” More. (link)

Thousands of fans waited in line at yesterday’s Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament to see Iowa star Caitlin Clark in action. However, retired journalist Lyle Muller was onsite & questioned why the league sold all tournament tickets as general admission: “You bought all session tickets. You can watch games like Maryland-Ohio State. Great, right? However, they clear the arena after each session. Here’s what happens: You have to get in line to get your GA seat. That means standing in line to get a decent seat. Your choices are: stand in line for a seat, attend Big10 rally stuff or watch early session. [...] 1st person in line for popular Iowa game at 5:30 pm CST got here at 5.50 AM. [...] So, these people bought full session tickets to stand in line all day. Maryland beating Ohio State in an upset bid? Gotta go to get in line. [...] Haven’t met one person who isn’t angry with the Big10. That includes some ushers who have to explain this BS to entering fans.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken underscores the importance of former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban’s comments regarding the changes brought by NIL and the transfer portal and posits that “in reality, those rule changes did more to spread the talent around than it did to help Saban collect blue-chip recruits. … It’s also completely understandable how such an arrangement would alter the relationship Saban had previously enjoyed with the blue-chip recruits who chose to play for him. If players were no longer convinced that the long-term developmental advantages of playing at Alabama were greater than the amount of NIL money they could make at other programs, then the system that made Saban dominant for so long would begin to show cracks even he couldn’t paper over.” However, rather than using Saban’s remarks as an excuse to try and go backward, Wolken contends it would be wiser to view them as further confirmation that “bemoaning this new world or prodding lawmakers…just won’t cut it anymore. … College sports can choose order through action or disorder through complaint and complacency. Saban’s words should be a warning that the latter is no longer the best option at their disposal.” (link)

BakerHostetler Partner Todd Lebowitz highlights some of the realities associated with student-athletes becoming employees and points out the NLRA “obligates employers to bargain over a broad range of issues, including compensation, scheduling, work rules, discipline and work assignments.” He then applies those criteria to schools as employers and asks: “Can the coach set the starting lineup (work assignments) without consulting the union? Set the practice schedule? The travel schedule? The play-calling? … What happens when two starters get benched for objecting to curfew? File a charge. Disciplined for violating a team rule that you and a teammate called unfair? File a charge. Did the coach make the whole team run laps because one player was late? (Yes, in the Dartmouth case). If two players refuse and get disciplined, file a charge. An administrative law judge will decide who plays and whether the discipline stands.” Furthermore, if student-athletes are employees under the NLRA, they may be employees under other laws too. “The NLRA is just one tree in a forest of employment laws.” Additionally, Lebowitz points out the irony in which the “Dartmouth Student Athlete Handbook prohibits players from receiving compensation for employment obtained ‘because of athletic ability.’ … But that’s exactly what the regional director concluded is happening. Quite the conundrum. The regional director would likely say that her ruling applies only to the NLRA, and technically that’s correct. But other laws apply the same test. So either the regional director is right in her ruling, or she is misapplying the test. Or are we prepared to say that the players are employees under the right-to-control test and simultaneously not employees under the right-to-control test?” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben reports that several major college football awards will not be included in EA Sports’ College Football 25. Among them: Bednarik Award (top defensive player), Davey O’Brien Award (top quarterback), Doak Walker Award (top running back), Jim Thorpe Award (top defensive back), Outland Trophy (top interior lineman), Lou Groza Award (top kicker) and the Ray Guy Award (top punter). Still no word on if the Butkus Award (top linebacker) or Bronko Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player) will be a part of the game. Hoops magazine and lifestyle company Slam has acquired college basketball apparel company 19nine. Sportico’s Dylan Manfre: “The deal merges Slam’s merchandise team with 19nine, which has licenses with more than 80 colleges and universities. It also allows for expansion into a new facility in Indiana. Slam’s parent company, sports and entertainment private equity firm JDS Sports, made an investment in 19nine back in 2020 to expand business operations and sell 19nine products on its online store.” Slam CEO Les Green: “Now we have our stamp on NCAA products, lifestyle products, products featuring NBA players, and really the acquisition of 19nine was to shore up the full lifestyle of basketball. It solidifies our merch side to be as encompassing and inclusive as our media side.” (link)

From in front of the Law360 paywall: ”The Georgia Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a trial court’s ruling that Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium can’t be held liable for injuries a woman sustained in a brawl at a 2017 college football game, but said the men she fought with have to face her assault and battery claims.” The game was the September 2017 tilt between Florida State and Alabama.
