Texas AD Chris Del Conte took the stage for a SXSW panel and said of private equity firms potentially investing in UT or college sports writ large: “I don’t know enough about it, but I do know enough when private equity gets in, they’re not giving you money for the heck of it. They’re going to get something out of it. It’s usually 10, 15, 20%. That 10, 15, 20% is critical to me to support our entire athletic program. I’m not trying to pay anybody else. I’m trying to get our student-athletes all the money they need.” Asked by Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams if that means the Longhorns are unlikely to take PE money anytime soon, Del Conte responds: “Factual.” (link)

Army West Point Deputy AD/CRO Tom Theodorakis sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to reflect on his experience as part of an NCAA men’s lacrosse championship at Syracuse and how he learned to push past his comfort zone during his time as a student-athlete. Theodorakis, who was recently elevated to the Deputy AD position, also discusses the evolution of ‘fit’ as he has progressed through his career, why he embraces feedback, how he ‘manages the clock’ when overseeing various external units and the importance of empowering staff. Theodorakis on evaluating and addressing any potential gaps in his skill set or work experience: “I’m very fortunate even in my current role at Army West Point to have great leadership there, and Mike Buddie’s a great example of that. I can be very candid and direct with him, whether that's a performance review or just our weekly one-on-one meetings, to say how am I doing and I think he not only comes from a place of caring and support, but will also say: ‘Hey, have you thought about this?’ or ‘What do you want to do? What are you missing?’ And I feel like he's helped me be prepared to, number one, answer that question and, number two, help provide a roadmap for me to get those types of experiences.” Theodorakis also says receiving feedback, including critical feedback, means people care. “It might sting a bit, but, wow, how great is it that someone is willing to…think thoroughly about your career? … I’ve always looked at that as a sign of love and care.” Full Q&A on ADU. The end of yesterday’s SEC Women’s Basketball Championship was interrupted by a fracas that resulted in the ejections of six players, leaving LSU and South Carolina with five and six players, respectively, to finish play the last two minutes. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes there are “conflicting reports about the impact of the game ejections on the eligibility of the players to play in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Participating in an on-court fight often leads to a suspension. However, according to reports, only USC’s Kamila Cardoso is expected to miss her team’s first NCAA tournament game. ESPN states her involvement in a fight makes her subject to a suspension that can be enforced in postseason play.” (link); Following the game, which South Carolina won, Gamecocks HC Dawn Staley said: "I just want to apologize to the basketball community. When you're playing in championship games like this, in our league, things get heated. No bad intentions. Their emotions got so far ahead of them that sometimes these things happen. So, I want to apologize for us playing a part in that. That's not who we are & not what we're about." (link); Tigers HC Kim Mulkey also addressed the incident and said: "What I saw, Flau'jae [Johnson] intentionally fouled Fulwiley because she stripped her. Great move because she was going to get a layup right there. And then some jawing went on with her and another player. Then the next thing I know Cardoso just waylaid her. So I ran out there because somebody came out of the stands, and I think it was Flau'jae's brother, trying to keep him from doing anything crazy. … It's ugly. It's not good. No one wants to be a part of that. No one wants to see that ugliness. But I can tell you this: I wish she would've pushed Angel Reese. Don't push a kid — you're 6-foot-8 — don't push somebody that little. That was uncalled for in my opinion. Let those two girls that were jawing, let them go at it." (link, link)

College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley takes an in-depth look at Colorado’s contract with the Big 12 and finds that the “difference between Colorado’s and Utah’s ‘Current Conference Affiliation’ language is much different. Colorado agrees to ‘immediately provide notice to its current conference…of its departure.’ While Utah, with the advantage of knowing the ‘notice of intent to leave’ was a contentious topic, does not agree to notify the Pac 12 of its pending departure.” Additionally, Farley finds that “in the rush to sign Colorado, the Big 12 Conference also missed a detail. It allows Colorado to simply warrant it has ‘institutional control of athletes.’ After some time to consider this section more fully, it expands the language, asking Utah to warrant that it is ‘not currently under investigation by the NCAA for any major violations, including allegations of lack of institutional control.’” Finally, Farley notes Utah’s contract includes a provision that it must adhere to bylaws except for a 99-year membership term while Colorado’s contract contains no such exception. Clemson Executive Senior Assoc. AD Natalie Honnen and Iowa State Director of Sports Medicine/Assoc. AD Mark Coberley join Kitman Labs CEO Stephen Smith and AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz for a conversation about the changing landscape of student-athlete care, including the impact of the NCAA Transformation Committee’s updated guidance on health and wellness requirements. They also discuss how NIL and the transfer portal play a role in the shifting needs and expectations of student-athletes and how these changing expectations have led to advancement in health and performance technology, including data portability and data aggregation. Honnen also talks about the importance of making sure she’s taking care of herself first, especially with so many things happening at once. “I can’t be my best if I’m not taking care of myself. I try to lead by example and let staff see that – that it’s okay to understand the ebbs and flows and take the time when you need it.” Coberley agrees and talks about being selective in filling out your staff. “If you hire pros and let them be pros, it frees your mind up to be able to handle things as they come unexpectedly like it happens to both of us every day.” Lots more in the full video on ADU. Spulu is “not close to being ready,” several former executives from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery tell Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, who notes: “The most serious issue is that the deal could entirely collapse. The three partners are still working off a nonbinding term sheet. According to a source with direct knowledge, they’re in the process of drafting definitive agreements, but it’s not a done deal yet.” Sports attorney Dan Wallach tells McCarthy: “Term sheets generally are not binding unless all the essential terms are agreed upon. They’re like agreements to agree.” One of the former execs adds: “They don’t have a contract. They don’t have a name. We don’t know who’ll run it. All they have is a press release. Somebody caught wind of this—and they all scrambled.” The distribution of ad revenue may prove to be a particularly tricky issue, as McCarthy wonders: “Will WBD, with no NFL rights, pocket some of ESPN’s Monday Night Football ad dollars?” A source with direct knowledge of the strategy says the partners will separately sell and retain all of the ad revenue generated by their content, but, as Puck’s Julia Alexander recently asked: “Why are the companies owning this equally when Disney and Fox bring the NFL and Warner [Bros.] Discovery does not?” McCarthy ultimately concludes: “There is a reason why in the face of all these difficulties, the partners are persisting: There is enormous potential reward here. If the super-streamer does take off, it could mark the beginning of the end for the traditional cable TV bundle and the birth of the streaming bundle—an innovation perhaps on par with Silicon Valley’s invention of the bus.” (link)

Major pay-TV operators, including Comcast, Charter, Altice and others, lost 5.035M subscribers in 2023, according to an analysis by Leichtman Research Group, bringing the total net losses in the past five years to over 20M. The firm estimates the companies ended the year with roughly 71.3M video customers, compared to 91.5M at the end of 2018. Charter currently has the most subscribers (14.122M) among cable companies, followed by Comcast (14.106M) and Altice (2.26M). Other traditional pay-TV services, which include DirecTV, Dish TV, Verizon Fios and Frontier, reported a total of 21M subscribers. The companies collectively lost more than 3.1M video customers in 2023, compared to a loss of 2.72M in 2022. Leichtman estimates that DirecTV led that group with 11.3M subscribers, followed by Dish (6.4M) and Verizon Fios (3M). The report also found that vMVPDs such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV and Fubo reported a total of 16.2M subscribers, an uptick of nearly 1.9M YoY. YouTube TV reported a total of 8M subscribers in February. Hulu + Live TV reported a total of 4.6M subscribers, while Sling TV and Fubo reported 2.055M and 1.618M, respectively. (link)

Colorado came back from a 51-point deficit to take home the NCAA skiing championship. Buffs HC Jana Weinberger: "It feels surreal. That was very close, very nerve racking, everybody did what we had to do. We came back from our not-so-great day on Thursday and it turned out well." (link)

The latest from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on College Football Playoff discussions: “We have a reality for the College Football Playoff that says we need to be in conversations. And it’s been a four-year work project for me that others decided to just put on the shelf for basically two years. Part of my frustration is the details that we’re trying to grind through right now, we should’ve been grinding through back in 2022 or 2023, not 2024. But problems yield in effort, that’s a mantra of mine. [...] I told our ADs, I quoted (Mississippi State AD) Zac Selmon. So when Zac made a football change, in his press conference, he said unless it comes from me, don’t believe it. While I appreciate anonymous sources and the unnamed AD in this conference and unnamed AD in that conference, I told our athletics directors [and] our presidents and chancellors, unless it’s coming from me, don’t believe it and I’ll tell you when it’s true. It’s a high-level piece of work. [...] We’ve done something great with the College Football Playoff. We’ve clearly benefitted from them, I think the game has benefitted from the Playoff. There’s a future opportunity to continue to grow and build.” (link)

In an in-depth interview with the Tallahassee Democrat’s Gerlad Thomas, Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes shares one of the biggest lessons learned in her first year leading the department: “I know that I come in every day and make decisions for the future of our athletes first and coaches second. But I learned that you can’t always please everybody. While everyone may not understand or like my decisions, I sleep well at night knowing that the student-athletes have been the center of all the decisions that I’ve made. And I’ve got to be good with whether people like it or not.” Also from Sykes: “I’ve learned that it’s better to go slow than to try to go fast and not have anyone come along with you. Our supporters feel the need to be included in many processes.” Lots more on the Rattlers fundraising efforts and the five-point plan to balance the budget by the end of the fiscal year. (link)

Economist Andy Schwarz outlines what student-athlete unionization could look like for the New York Times’ Joe Nocera & Ephrat Livni: “You would have conference-level unions to negotiate the terms of employment and to enshrine in contracts the rights and duties of an athlete. In my view, the schools would provide the education and the conferences would be employing the athletes to be participants on a television program.” ESPN Men’s Basketball analyst Jay Bilas also provides perspective: “This is really simple. Just have a contract between the athlete and the school. Just like the rest of American business does. [...] At first, some players will be overpaid and some others might be underpaid, but pretty soon, a market will be established, and you’ll know what players are worth.” (link)

ESPN Men’s Basketball analyst Jay Bilas continues on the potential for NIL-based compensation to become standard for not just in-season events, but also post-season tournaments: “The money, that million dollars per team, goes into the university’s collective or into the school’s collective. And that way, it goes to the players. Like, who wouldn’t want to play in that? Rather than going into a tournament and spending money to get there, it costs you money, you’re not really making that much. Now, the players are making money, and it’s going to – as this gets bigger, and I think it will, it’s going to go into March. And can you imagine getting an invitation from a March tournament where you can make into your collective $2 [million] or $3 million? You go to the NCAA tournament, your players get a t-shirt? That’s going to be a thing, and the NCAA is gonna have to respond. Revenue sharing is coming, and they don’t want to admit it. But it’s coming, and now it’s here.” A bit more from On3 & Bilas’ comments from yesterday’s College GameDay. (link)

Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny discusses the league's Women's Basketball Tournament in Minneapolis & leveraging momentum created by Iowa student-athlete Caitlin Clark: "Timing is everything. It’s making sure that it’s not just this fleeting moment in time, but that you’re actually using this to attract new fans and younger fans who are going to like what they see and come back year after year regardless of where the tournament is." Thursday's second round games televised by the Big Ten Network were the highest rated in the history of the event. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit digs into the NIL efforts at Indiana State, where third year Men’s Basketball HC Josh Schertz and sophomore student-athlete Robbie Avila have led the Sycamores to a 28-5 record and likely an NCAA tourney bid. Libit: “The team’s national intrigue as a prospective Cinderella story has been signal-boosted by the unique allure of Avila, ISU’s roly-poly, bicep-tattooed, spectacle-adorned big man, whose methodical, below-the-rim guile has earned comparisons to Denver Nuggets MVP Nikola Jokić. It doesn’t take a financier like [ISU booster and former Board of Trustees President Mike] Alley to know that keeping both Avila and Schertz in Terre Haute next year is going to take more money—and right quick.” To that end, roughly 50 ISU alumni and boosters gathered last week to work on that, with the goal of having at least $300K in the bank for next year, with the intention of offering Avila $75K-$90K. Avila currently makes $30K through Crossroad of Champions plus a Chevy Blazer from York Chevrolet. Avila’s agent, Joseph Nery: “Robbie loves Indiana State, but like any college athlete, if there is an opportunity to capitalize on that, you want to do that—you would be crazy not to.” (link)

According to an examination of the team’s season by The Athletic, Temple men’s basketball played at least three other games that also generated irregular betting patterns, aside from the Temple vs. UAB one flagged by U.S. Integrity on Thursday. The other games were against Memphis, Rice and Tulsa. Specifically on the Owls vs. Blazers matchup, gambling expert and former casino executive Richard Schuetz offered this: “It’s like a stock price. You have buyers and sellers, and you settle on an equilibrium price. There’s nothing going, no earnings call, no disaster, no adverse legal ruling. And all of a sudden it went up 38 percent. Well, what would you think? Somebody’s got some information that the market doesn’t have.” Of note, from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Chris Vannini: “The betting patterns around the three additional games are not evidence of illicit behavior by anyone involved with the games, and no one has been publicly accused of wrongdoing. But they are the types of patterns that regulators look for when attempting to identify suspicious behavior.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Senior Advisor/former Virginia AD Craig Littlepage sits down with NCAA VP for Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman to discuss her career in college sports, her thoughts on what makes a successful basketball coach, the continued momentum of women’s basketball and more. Holzman remarks that despite the sport’s significant growth, particularly in the last few years, there “still feels as though, in some spaces, there’s still an undertone of, ‘Oh, it's just kind of a blip on the screen. Can women sports or women's basketball really sustain this? Should we continue to invest at this level? Are we going to really realize the potential?’ So instead of having the attitude of being opportunistic…it's a constant proving of yourself.” Holzman also talks about the myriad factors that have contributed to the growth in women’s sports overall, including the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team’s call for equal pay, student-athletes highlighting the resource inequities during March Madness in the COVID year, and Americans’ desire for community coming out of the pandemic, and notes that “in women’s basketball, because of all that, there is now greater exposure that allows storylines of our student-athletes to lead the way – and the storylines of our programs and our coaches…and to have that also with an elevated caliber of play on the court we've seen in women's basketball, the competitive parity and depth is better than it's ever been.” Full Q&A. Fitch Ratings warns that delays in processing FAFSA applications could threaten the credit and even the viability of small private colleges that serve low-income students. “For colleges that are almost solely dependent on student-generated revenues, this enrollment uncertainty is wreaking havoc on their already tight budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year. For colleges that suffer enrollment losses, even marginal, one-time disruptions in producing a robust incoming freshman class will dampen finances for several years.” (link)

Fubo Co-Founder/CEO David Gandler explains the overall goal of the company’s lawsuit against Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery over their announced sports streamer is to level the licensing and fee playing field between Fubo and other licensees of sports networks. Sportico’s Brendan Coffey points out that Fubo’s ad revenue rose 14% in the most recent quarter while the other companies struggled. Additionally, Fubo experienced double-digit growth in its subscriber base. Gandler contends that is not only a sign that Fubo has a legitimate business model, but that the company ultimately is a benefit to everyone in the sports rights industry. The problem, Gandler continues, involves the “anti-competitive behaviors” of the other companies. Fubo says it pays about $200M annually in fees to carry stations it sees little evidence people care about, such as Disney’s National Geographic and FXM. Cable carriers such as Spectrum have been able to drop those channels in recent years, but Fubo says it still must buy them with ESPN. Furthermore, Gandler says the premium Fubo pays comes with more restrictions than other services. For instance, Fubo says it is prohibited from compiling highlights of games for its cloud DVR service, but YouTube TV gets to. “We just want to compete fairly. Last year we paid out about $1.2B in fees, but we have to get something in return. I understand we execute well, so they think we can handle it, but the bullying has got to stop.” More from Coffey. NFL Hall of Famer and former Florida star RB Emmitt Smith reacts to Florida’s decision to eliminate its DEI programs, pursuant to a law recently signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, writing on X: “I’m utterly disgusted by UF’s decision and the precedent that it sets. We cannot continue to believe and trust that a team of leaders all made up of the same background will make the right decision when it comes to equality and diversity. History has already proven that is not the case. Instead of showing courage and leadership, we continue to fail based on systemic issues and with this decision, UF has conformed to the political pressures of today’s time. To MANY minority athletes at UF, please be aware and vocal about this decision by the University who is now closing doors on other minorities without any oversight.” The Athletic’s Jim Trotter applauds Smith’s sentiment but believes there is room to go further: “Beyond speaking out, minority athletes, parents, coaches and business leaders should take action against universities, conferences and states that do not respect racial and cultural diversity.” Trotter notes there are no Black Football HCs currently in the SEC despite what the league says are ongoing efforts to become more inclusive. Meanwhile, one college coach tells Trotter change needs to start at the top: “If the NFL guys (boycotted), then college coaches would follow. But everybody is scared. They’re scared to repost stuff on social media that they think won’t be becoming of them. They’re scared of retaliation. They saw what the NFL did to Kaepernick.” Lots more. (link)
