Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins Front Office Sports Today to talk about the changes coming for college sports and points out that a quid pro quo already exists for college athletes and says she herself benefited from the NCAA model. “I got a full scholarship to play basketball in college, had a host of other benefits because of my participation on my team, graduated debt-free, got into a school I probably wouldn’t have gotten into…so I guess I take issue with the notion that they're not getting anything for the experience. I think the precise way to describe it is there is a push now to go further than that and to declare them employees that would be subject to a minimum wage, overtime, workers comp in a taxable relationship. The benefits that athletes get right now are not taxable, so the notion that the relationship could be transformed into a taxable relationship would be very dramatic. … So, I think I would sort of amend your question to say are the schools and the NCAA ready for that and are the athletes ready for that? Because at the end of the day it may not be exactly the kind of arrangement that they would have expected, those of whom set this all in motion.” Ackerman goes on to say certain athletes, particularly those “playing high-level football at certain schools,” may need to have their relationships with their universities adjusted because of the benefits they’re providing to their universities. Division I is sort of a band, and those athletes are at the top level of the band. What I would submit is at the lower level of the band, the benefits are probably going more the other way. Playing on a team is providing more benefits to the athletes than it's providing to the university by virtue of their participation, and so there's a calculus there.” Lots more in the full Q&A. SBJ’s Ben Portnoy examines where men’s hoops fits into the increasingly football-focused industry and notes the general feeling among administrators is the NCAA has a good thing going with March Madness. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey: “Basketball is a rallying point. I was asked to be involved in the Division I Transformation Committee and we were asked, ‘What binds Division I together right now?’ I would argue, as of right now, it’s basketball, period, and it’s March [Madness] with an exclamation point, because that’s the one venue where now almost 400 colleges and universities do have some level of interaction.” Still, schools that are traditionally “basketball schools” like Indiana and Kansas continue to invest heavily in football because, as one Power 5 AD tells Portnoy: “Michigan and Ohio State look a lot different than Indiana and Illinois. [If] I’m Indiana, I’m investing in football, because I don’t want to wake up one day and Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson and Florida State get overtures from private equity and say, ‘You know what, we’re going to go create something totally different and we’re gonna leave Indiana behind, because they don’t carry their weight.’” Meanwhile, Jayhawks AD Travis Goff believes “there’s an evolution ahead in the basketball space. As much radical shifting that’s going on in college athletics…nothing’s untouchable. I do think basketball will at some juncture, maybe reasonably soon, reach a point where there’s a pretty major discussion on how that shifts going forward.” More. (link)

The Dartmouth men’s and women’s basketball teams reached out to Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Tony Clark before voting on unionization, and Clark tells the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham: “We believe that a lot of the challenges that currently exist in the college landscape can be remedied by guys having a formal seat at the table. So that call that we got from the Dartmouth men’s and women’s team at the time, I tip my hat to those guys and gals. The guys moving forward in the fashion that you’ve seen them and being able to come alongside them in whatever fashion that we can has been great. We’re hopeful that there are additional conversations that are had beyond the Dartmouth men’s basketball team.” Meanwhile, Abraham notes that since the MLBPA now represents MiLB players, college baseball student-athletes could be the next logical step, and Clark says: “There’s an opportunity as we continue to discuss among [the AFL-CIO’s Sports Council] and separately for all of us to engage in a way that’s a little bit different than happened at this point. Obviously our expertise would be in baseball.” Abraham notes the “MLBPA could aid college baseball players in a number of ways: improving facilities, finding more routes to NIL income, mentorship programs, and representing the players in any disputes with their schools or the NCAA.” (link)

College football attendance increased slightly from an average of 41,840 fans per game in 2022 to 41,867 last season. CBS’ Dennis Dodd: “That rise continues to shatter long-standing fallacies. In court filings the past few years, the NCAA has preached that player compensation would be the death of the amateur model. As a result, fans would stop watching and attending games. … The 2023 attendance figure is college football's highest since 2017, based on official NCAA records. In fact, FBS attendance has risen across consecutive seasons for the first time since 2008. Not since the all-time record of 46,971 fans per game that same year has the sport been more popular in the stands and the living room. TV ratings last season were arguably the highest ever, depending on preferred metrics.” Houston experienced the nation's largest attendance increase by percentage (+45.3%) and second-largest increase by game (+10,626) last season. Meanwhile, the Pac-12 led the FBS with a 9.7% attendance increase per game; the SEC and ACC each posted their highest average attendance since 2016; Michigan led the country in attendance for the ninth straight year and 26th out of the last 27 seasons; the top 13 programs in attendance were all in the SEC or Big Ten; and USF led all Group of 5 teams with a 28% YoY uptick. Austin Peay announces the addition of women’s lacrosse as the Governors’ 17th athletic team, with competition set to begin in the Atlantic Sun in the spring of 2026. Governors AD Gerald Harrison: “Lacrosse is the fastest-growing women's sport in the NCAA, and we are excited to have the first Division I women's lacrosse program at a public university in the state of Tennessee! This is an exciting time for Austin Peay and the entire Clarksville community, and I can't wait to watch an entirely new group of Governors student-athletes fulfill the 'Total Gov Concept' while also competing for championships on the field!" Colorado has reported a record number of applicants for the fall 2024 semester and a 50.5% increase in Black applicants. As for whether this is a direct product of Football HC Deion Sanders’ impact, CU Director of Communications/Chief Spokesperson Steve Hurlbert says: “It’s really hard to say if this is in any way related to Coach Prime. The exposure that CU Boulder has received since Coach Prime was hired has been tremendous and certainly being showcased in a number of national media outlets is helpful for attracting applicants, but it’s difficult to draw a direct causational line between Coach Prime and this increase. Many of our peer universities have also noted higher application numbers this year, so CU Boulder is not an anomaly among other institutions of higher education.” Overall, CU saw a 29.3% increase in non-white applicants. Texas AD Chris Del Conte took the stage for a SXSW panel and said of private equity firms potentially investing in UT or college sports writ large: “I don’t know enough about it, but I do know enough when private equity gets in, they’re not giving you money for the heck of it. They’re going to get something out of it. It’s usually 10, 15, 20%. That 10, 15, 20% is critical to me to support our entire athletic program. I’m not trying to pay anybody else. I’m trying to get our student-athletes all the money they need.” Asked by Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams if that means the Longhorns are unlikely to take PE money anytime soon, Del Conte responds: “Factual.” (link)

Army West Point Deputy AD/CRO Tom Theodorakis sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to reflect on his experience as part of an NCAA men’s lacrosse championship at Syracuse and how he learned to push past his comfort zone during his time as a student-athlete. Theodorakis, who was recently elevated to the Deputy AD position, also discusses the evolution of ‘fit’ as he has progressed through his career, why he embraces feedback, how he ‘manages the clock’ when overseeing various external units and the importance of empowering staff. Theodorakis on evaluating and addressing any potential gaps in his skill set or work experience: “I’m very fortunate even in my current role at Army West Point to have great leadership there, and Mike Buddie’s a great example of that. I can be very candid and direct with him, whether that's a performance review or just our weekly one-on-one meetings, to say how am I doing and I think he not only comes from a place of caring and support, but will also say: ‘Hey, have you thought about this?’ or ‘What do you want to do? What are you missing?’ And I feel like he's helped me be prepared to, number one, answer that question and, number two, help provide a roadmap for me to get those types of experiences.” Theodorakis also says receiving feedback, including critical feedback, means people care. “It might sting a bit, but, wow, how great is it that someone is willing to…think thoroughly about your career? … I’ve always looked at that as a sign of love and care.” Full Q&A on ADU. The end of yesterday’s SEC Women’s Basketball Championship was interrupted by a fracas that resulted in the ejections of six players, leaving LSU and South Carolina with five and six players, respectively, to finish play the last two minutes. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes there are “conflicting reports about the impact of the game ejections on the eligibility of the players to play in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Participating in an on-court fight often leads to a suspension. However, according to reports, only USC’s Kamila Cardoso is expected to miss her team’s first NCAA tournament game. ESPN states her involvement in a fight makes her subject to a suspension that can be enforced in postseason play.” (link); Following the game, which South Carolina won, Gamecocks HC Dawn Staley said: "I just want to apologize to the basketball community. When you're playing in championship games like this, in our league, things get heated. No bad intentions. Their emotions got so far ahead of them that sometimes these things happen. So, I want to apologize for us playing a part in that. That's not who we are & not what we're about." (link); Tigers HC Kim Mulkey also addressed the incident and said: "What I saw, Flau'jae [Johnson] intentionally fouled Fulwiley because she stripped her. Great move because she was going to get a layup right there. And then some jawing went on with her and another player. Then the next thing I know Cardoso just waylaid her. So I ran out there because somebody came out of the stands, and I think it was Flau'jae's brother, trying to keep him from doing anything crazy. … It's ugly. It's not good. No one wants to be a part of that. No one wants to see that ugliness. But I can tell you this: I wish she would've pushed Angel Reese. Don't push a kid — you're 6-foot-8 — don't push somebody that little. That was uncalled for in my opinion. Let those two girls that were jawing, let them go at it." (link, link)

College Football Realignment publisher Bill Farley takes an in-depth look at Colorado’s contract with the Big 12 and finds that the “difference between Colorado’s and Utah’s ‘Current Conference Affiliation’ language is much different. Colorado agrees to ‘immediately provide notice to its current conference…of its departure.’ While Utah, with the advantage of knowing the ‘notice of intent to leave’ was a contentious topic, does not agree to notify the Pac 12 of its pending departure.” Additionally, Farley finds that “in the rush to sign Colorado, the Big 12 Conference also missed a detail. It allows Colorado to simply warrant it has ‘institutional control of athletes.’ After some time to consider this section more fully, it expands the language, asking Utah to warrant that it is ‘not currently under investigation by the NCAA for any major violations, including allegations of lack of institutional control.’” Finally, Farley notes Utah’s contract includes a provision that it must adhere to bylaws except for a 99-year membership term while Colorado’s contract contains no such exception. Clemson Executive Senior Assoc. AD Natalie Honnen and Iowa State Director of Sports Medicine/Assoc. AD Mark Coberley join Kitman Labs CEO Stephen Smith and AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz for a conversation about the changing landscape of student-athlete care, including the impact of the NCAA Transformation Committee’s updated guidance on health and wellness requirements. They also discuss how NIL and the transfer portal play a role in the shifting needs and expectations of student-athletes and how these changing expectations have led to advancement in health and performance technology, including data portability and data aggregation. Honnen also talks about the importance of making sure she’s taking care of herself first, especially with so many things happening at once. “I can’t be my best if I’m not taking care of myself. I try to lead by example and let staff see that – that it’s okay to understand the ebbs and flows and take the time when you need it.” Coberley agrees and talks about being selective in filling out your staff. “If you hire pros and let them be pros, it frees your mind up to be able to handle things as they come unexpectedly like it happens to both of us every day.” Lots more in the full video on ADU. Spulu is “not close to being ready,” several former executives from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery tell Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, who notes: “The most serious issue is that the deal could entirely collapse. The three partners are still working off a nonbinding term sheet. According to a source with direct knowledge, they’re in the process of drafting definitive agreements, but it’s not a done deal yet.” Sports attorney Dan Wallach tells McCarthy: “Term sheets generally are not binding unless all the essential terms are agreed upon. They’re like agreements to agree.” One of the former execs adds: “They don’t have a contract. They don’t have a name. We don’t know who’ll run it. All they have is a press release. Somebody caught wind of this—and they all scrambled.” The distribution of ad revenue may prove to be a particularly tricky issue, as McCarthy wonders: “Will WBD, with no NFL rights, pocket some of ESPN’s Monday Night Football ad dollars?” A source with direct knowledge of the strategy says the partners will separately sell and retain all of the ad revenue generated by their content, but, as Puck’s Julia Alexander recently asked: “Why are the companies owning this equally when Disney and Fox bring the NFL and Warner [Bros.] Discovery does not?” McCarthy ultimately concludes: “There is a reason why in the face of all these difficulties, the partners are persisting: There is enormous potential reward here. If the super-streamer does take off, it could mark the beginning of the end for the traditional cable TV bundle and the birth of the streaming bundle—an innovation perhaps on par with Silicon Valley’s invention of the bus.” (link)

Major pay-TV operators, including Comcast, Charter, Altice and others, lost 5.035M subscribers in 2023, according to an analysis by Leichtman Research Group, bringing the total net losses in the past five years to over 20M. The firm estimates the companies ended the year with roughly 71.3M video customers, compared to 91.5M at the end of 2018. Charter currently has the most subscribers (14.122M) among cable companies, followed by Comcast (14.106M) and Altice (2.26M). Other traditional pay-TV services, which include DirecTV, Dish TV, Verizon Fios and Frontier, reported a total of 21M subscribers. The companies collectively lost more than 3.1M video customers in 2023, compared to a loss of 2.72M in 2022. Leichtman estimates that DirecTV led that group with 11.3M subscribers, followed by Dish (6.4M) and Verizon Fios (3M). The report also found that vMVPDs such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV and Fubo reported a total of 16.2M subscribers, an uptick of nearly 1.9M YoY. YouTube TV reported a total of 8M subscribers in February. Hulu + Live TV reported a total of 4.6M subscribers, while Sling TV and Fubo reported 2.055M and 1.618M, respectively. (link)
