Mountain East Commissioner Reid Amos joins D2.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 NCAA Convention to talk about membership changes, key issues facing DII and more. Looking back to the beginning of the academic year, the abrupt closure of Alderson Broaddus led Amos to his shortlist of potential institutions that ultimately led to the addition of Point Park, pending their membership application. Further: “I think in ways my job is a little bit different than some of my colleagues because I have to be much more concerned than some of my colleagues about supporting the missions and visions of our institutions as opposed to it just being an athletics alignment. We have to be concerned about trying to contribute to the overall health and longevity of our Institutions.” On the passed and potential changes to the football schedule: “Hopefully this new television contract is going to open the door for a week 12, which I think will go a long way in helping to stabilize Division II membership. The more options you have to choose to play games, you can solve non-conference scheduling problems and even conference scheduling problems and then the benefit that we could ultimately see from it is I think that you would see enhanced viewership of a Division II championship game in football that would occur later. We saw ratings fall off significantly when we were shifted from ESPN2 to ESPNU with our DII football championship. […] I think you can get later in the television schedule. We won't have to worry about playing our championship game on the same day the bowl season opens and there's five other football games on the same day. It's always better to be the only game in town so to speak and if we could get into a time slot where we're the only game I think there's a lot of potential benefit for that for the division.” Check out the full conversation only on Connect. NCAA CMO Brian Hainline announces his retirement, effective May 31. Hainline, who was appointed as the NCAA’s first chief medical officer in 2013, also founded and oversaw the NCAA Sport Science Institute. (link)

The NCAA announces Home Depot as its newest corporate partner in time for March Madness. Through the three-year partnership, Home Depot will have rights across all 90 NCAA championships, including the DI women's and men's basketball tournaments. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt: "We are thrilled to welcome The Home Depot, one of the most recognized brands in college sports, to the NCAA Corporate Champions and Partners Program. We appreciate Home Depot extending its support of college student-athletes to NCAA Championships, which includes March Madness. The ATF is investigating vandalism and fires that damaged the press box at Fort Lewis’ Ray Dennison Memorial Field and a pair of FLC Police vehicles set on fire Sunday. President Tom Stritikus: “I am unnerved, and I am angry that someone would do this to our amazing campus. But I do take solace in the fact that multiple law enforcement organizations are on scene right now, investigating. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has rescinded the state's NIL Executive Order to "preserve the competitiveness of North Carolina post-secondary institutions in college athletics,” calling it “no longer necessary” in light of Tennessee vs. NCAA. (link)

The NAACP published an open letter yesterday urging Black college athletes to “reconsider their decisions” to attend a public university in Florida after the University of Florida (DI) dismantled its DEI department pursuant to the state’s Stop WOKE Act. From the letter: “Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made no effort to conceal his administration's devaluation of Black America. … This imbalance of power and profit demands a response, particularly because these institutions reap considerable financial benefits from the very individuals they fail to stand by in matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion." NAACP President/CEO Derrick Johnson: "Florida's rampant anti-Black policies are a direct threat to the advancement of our young people and their ability to compete in a global economy. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are paramount to ensuring equitable and effective educational outcomes. The value Black, and other college athletes bring to large universities is unmatched. If these institutions are unable to completely invest in those athletes, it's time they take their talents elsewhere. The NAACP will remain unwavering in our efforts to hold Governor Ron DeSantis, and all oppressive elected officials accountable for their attempts to unravel our democracy." (link)
