Texas A&M has officially announced Nebraska AD Trev Alberts as its next AD. Alberts: "From my perspective, there has never been a more consequential time in history for higher education and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Leadership matters now more than ever before. My interest in Texas A&M is not only due to its prestigious reputation but also because of President Welsh's compelling vision in which, I believe, Athletics can play a small but important role in helping Texas A&M achieve unprecedented success." (link); Alberts’ departure from Lincoln has left most in the state wondering why, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, who notes that when Alberts signed an extension with Nebraska four months ago he said: “I love this place. I love the state of Nebraska. I don’t want to be anywhere else.” So, what happened? Sherman contends that “foremost, this departure was about leadership. The fact that Nebraska doesn’t have the viable infrastructure in place above Alberts to responsibly hire his replacement says everything about the situation. The campus chancellor in Lincoln, Rodney Bennett, came on board in July 2023 after Ronnie Green retired and the school handed guidance of Nebraska athletics to the university system president, Ted Carter. But then in August, Carter announced plans to leave for Ohio State.” Meanwhile, frustration is mounting over a delay in hiring a new president as well as the “possible reasons for it, including a divisive political landscape marked by breadcrumbs that lead to the doorstep of the governor’s mansion. … If Nebraska couldn’t find a path to harmony with the unified leadership in place less than a year ago, the task in front of it without Alberts is monumental.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports presidents in the ACC and Big 12 “voted to authorize their commissioners to adopt the future framework related to a new [College Football Playoff], including a new revenue model and concepts around a playoff format — all of which will be part of a new contract with ESPN.” Dellenger notes the difference in distribution between the two sets of conferences, per the figures he reported last week, could exceed $300M. The SEC and Big Ten stand to earn $700M+, while the ACC and Big 12 would net ~$400M. Roughly $115M is slotted for the Group of Five. Additionally, there is not expected to be a participation-distribution concept, as the current model calls for participating teams to earn revenue by qualifying and then advancing through the field. A format for the playoff itself is further from being settled, but Dellenger notes the “contract is expected to include several guaranteed protections related to a format. The champions of the four major conferences and the highest-ranked Group of Five champion will earn an automatic qualifying spot into any playoff. Notre Dame is expected to have its own protections related to a format. Other details of the formula are expected to be finalized after the leagues reach an agreement with ESPN on the television deal.” While a 5+9 14-team format is “gaining traction,” Dellenger notes a 2-2-1-1-1+7 that would grant two auto berths each to the SEC and Big Ten, one each to the ACC and Big 12, one to the highest-ranked Group of Five, with seven at-large spots is also under consideration. Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NCAA Convention to talk about the work of the DI Strategic Vision and Planning Committee, what message should be communicated to Congress on behalf of the Ivy League and lots more. Harris also discussed the possibility of student-athletes becoming employees, though it should be noted this was before the NLRB regional office’s decision in favor of Dartmouth’s men’s basketball student-athletes. Harris: “I can’t even envision how that would work because what we are providing is an opportunity for student-athletes to truly pursue the sport that they've been playing and that they love to play and to provide them all the benefits that come through college sports: the leadership skills, the learning, how to bounce back from failure and losing, team building and setting a goal, working hard and achieving that goal or surpassing that goal – maybe not meeting that goal and what do you do to adjust. So, for us it really is about the student-athlete experience. It’s not an employer-employee relationship in any way, so I don't even know what that would look like.” Check out the full interview on Connect. (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham sits down with Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes to discuss what’s next for college sports and acknowledges he doesn’t know “where we're going from a national governance standpoint. Right now, you have to have a minimum of 16 sports to be at the highest level. [NCAA President] Charlie Baker has a proposal out there that we want to enhance some of the benefits to students, we want to ensure that they graduate, we want to make sure they have great health care. But the financial component of his proposal I don't think has really been fully developed. I think that'll have some impact on the future, whether or not the ACC schools can really compete at the highest level.” Former UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz last year said the $572M Florida State would have to pay to exit the league was “pretty accurate,” but Cunningham tells Barnes: "If Florida State thinks that they have greater value than our league and want to leave, wouldn't we ask to share in the upside of that greater value? So I'm not sure that $500 [million] is going to be enough. So maybe it's $600M or $700M to get out of the league. I don't know." Cunningham remains solid in his opposition to the ACC’s recent expansion: “If you want to schedule a nonconference game occasionally on the West Coast, I think that's wonderful. But to be required to go out there on an annual basis, I don't think that's in our best interests for our student athletes. Having said that, we'll do everything we can to make it a positive experience for the incoming schools. … But I also believe that if you have an opinion, or a thought, you should express it, even if you don't get unanimity in a vote.” More from Cunningham. A 277-page congressional commission report released this month envisions wide-scale changes to the USOPC movement. Recommendations include a greater role for government and oversight, governance changes for the USOPC, and greater independence for athletes and the U.S. Center for SafeSport. However, USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland tells SBJ’s Rachel Axon the committee is not content to wait for Congress to put the recommendations into action: “With the amount of time and the practical realities of getting anything to happen in the government, it would be irresponsible of me to sit back and hope. We’re going to work on the things we can influence.” University of Baltimore law professor Dionne Koller, who co-chaired the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics: “I believe in all the recommendations. I think they’re all doable because they were a result of a bipartisan commission that came to consensus as we studied the issues and saw where the facts led us.” Anthem Engineering Chief Engineer/Commission Co-Chair Han Xiao adds: “We’re cautiously optimistic right now. We’re really encouraged that because of our really bipartisan process, that’s being reflected in bipartisan interest in Congress to be able to draft legislation. We understand it’s an election year. The window is short to be able to get anything done.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit profiles Michigan State Assoc. AD for Strategic Initiatives & Conference Planning Kevin Pauga, whose sports scheduling platform Faktor “now contracts with about two-thirds of Division I conferences…in addition to several DII and DIII conferences. Under the umbrella of a related company, Optimal Schedules, Pauga has also ventured into the pro ranks, with clients that include the NFL.” All told, Pauga says his scheduling work is generating close to $1M in revenue each year, “though it is unclear exactly how much of this he pockets.” Pauga began the project to assist MSU with its nonconference scheduling in basketball. He then offered to help the Big Ten with its volleyball slate following the addition of Rutgers and Maryland. Within a few years he began taking paid jobs and even though the platform continues to grow, Pauga has no plans to leave campus, where Spartans Assoc. AD for Communications Matt Larson says Pauga didn’t necessarily invent his current role, “but if you look at the different kinds of things he does, it is something that is unique to him. If he would leave, I don’t envision there would be somebody coming in and filling that spot.” Pauga: “I am very mindful of needing to be able to balance the two in the current iteration of what my Michigan State responsibilities are as well as the success that has grown the last few years. It is something I am mindful of and intentional about making sure my integrity is at the forefront.” Lots more, including Pauga’s thoughts on scaling the business and Faktor’s role working with the Big Ten during expansion. Ad inventory for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is all “basically sold out,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery EVP of Ad Sales Jon Diament, who says: “This will be the best revenue tournament we’ve ever had.” Sportico’s Anthony Crupi reports CBS and Turner can likely expect over $1B in ad revenue after last year’s March Madness drummed up $968.6M. Diament says the volume for the tourney was “up high-single-digits, in terms of dollars,” while pricing is up over last year’s rates by mid- to high-single-digit percentages. Crupi also notes that “among the categories that have invested the most in this year’s tourney are insurance, quick-serve restaurants, automotive and financial services. While neither media partner makes a practice of disclosing their going rates for in-game inventory, buyers said the early rounds priced out at a few hundred-thousand dollars per 30-second spot, while the cost of buying a unit in the title game ranges between $2.3M and $2.4M a pop.” (link)

The WAC announces an NIL initiative with University Credit Union (UCU) through which UCU will select one men’s and one women’s basketball player at the conclusion of their respective tournaments to serve as UCU ambassadors. We are fortunate to have a partner that shares our vision of innovation and passion for enhancing the student-athlete experience. We look forward to continuing to build on our relationship with UCU for years to come.” (link)

Leaders of the ATP and WTA are attempting to secure an investment of at least $1B from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), according to The Athletic’s Matthew Futterman. Altogether, the investments could “immediately increase the total revenues and investment in tennis — which are between $2.5B and $3B — by roughly a third. According to people familiar with the proposal, who remain anonymous to protect relationships. The bulk of the money will go toward purchasing a license for a new top-level mixed event in Saudi Arabia. There is also money for additional sponsorships.” Futterman also notes the proposal “accounted for Saudi Arabia’s pending deal to host the WTA Tour Finals, which is yet to be announced but is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.” Whether a deal with the PIF is ever executed remains to be seen, as Futterman notes there remains disagreement between ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi and leaders of the Grand Slams, particularly Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and UTSA CEO/Executive Director Lew Sherr. The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill that would ban TikTok from operating in the U.S. or force a sale. The legislation calls for ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok or the platform will be banned from app stores and web-hosting services in the U.S. ByteDance would have six months from the enactment of the bill to comply. President Biden has said he would sign the bill if it makes it to his desk, and the White House yesterday said it hoped the Senate would act swiftly. Opponents of the bill are raising concerns that the legislation was rushed and voiced reservations about bills limiting what information Americans could see. (link)

Texas A&M is expected to tap Nebraska AD Trev Alberts for the same role, according to multiple reports. The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman believes Alberts’ departure would be a “disaster” for NU. In addition to hiring Football HC Matt Rhule and Men’s Basketball HC Fred Hoiberg, Alberts launched a $450M renovation project for Memorial Stadium, and Sherman writes: “All of it, without Alberts in charge, is at risk.” No official word from Texas A&M yet. (link); According to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, Alberts would owe NU $4.12M if he leaves the school now. (link); ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Alberts is expected to agree to a five-year deal with the Aggies that will put him near the top of the SEC and among the top 10 athletic directors nationally in terms of salary. Alberts’ current contract with Nebraska pays him $1.7M annually with a scheduled bump to $2.1M in 2026. (link)

A new subdivision similar to that which NCAA President Charlie Baker outlined in Project DI could occur naturally as a result of the myriad court cases facing the organization, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes that even if the cases are all settled, they could cost Power 5 schools eight figures each. One P5 AD tells him: "If there is a settlement in that [House] case, that's going to define the new subdivision." Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: "A settlement for House and all the others, it could almost be like what a collective bargaining agreement would sort of look like in terms of, 'Here's what the rules are going to be going forward, NCAA. You're going to share it with the athletes.'" As far as paying for settlements goes, Altimore Collins & Company strategy consultant Tony Altimore tells Dodd: "Universities, because they're big enterprises, actually have access to really cheap debt. Universities are zero-risk [for lenders]. The University of Michigan isn't going anywhere." More from Dodd. (link)

The new venue will create spaces for student-athletes, increase the stadium's seating capacity and elevate the fan experience. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion anticipated by spring 2026. The softball team will continue playing home games on the current field during construction. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey agrees with Alabama Men’s Basketball Coach Nate Oats’ assessment that the SEC is now a strong basketball conference because it decided to be. Sankey cites Selection Sunday in 2016 as the impetus for the turnaround: “It was a bad day. We had three teams picked, and that’s my first year as commissioner. I had been thinking about some changes that might be needed, but that day clarified it for me.” Sankey subsequently hired former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese as a consultant and appointed former Hartford MBB HC Dan Leibovitz as the czar of SEC men’s basketball. Tranghese: “They had lost for so long that everybody was beaten down. When I talked to coaches, they’d say, ‘Nobody cares about us. We’re in a football conference.’ I told them that was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. … You got everything you need. You got money, you got incredible fan bases, got a television partner in ESPN that is the No. 1 outlet for college basketball, and you got your own television network. And you’re telling me we can’t be better in basketball? You have so much more than the Big East, in terms of just pure resources, and look what they’ve accomplished.” In evaluating what needed to be done, Trangese says he told Sankey: “You can’t get this league to be good and I can’t get this league to be good. There’s only one core of people who can get this league good, and that’s the coaches. So Danny Leibovitz and I began to spend an inordinate amount of time on coaching. Every time there was a coaching change, all we asked our ADs to do was to listen to what we had to say. All we wanted to make certain was that people weren’t making bad hires. … Sometimes I thought a guy’s reputation wasn’t good. I told one president, ‘You can’t hire this person. You hire him and you’ll end up on probation.’ And that’s what Greg wanted me to do.” Lots more on the rise of SEC hoops from The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker and Joe Rexrode. (link)

Kentucky Sports Radio Founder Matt Jones reports an official Kentucky Basketball NIL Fund is set to be formally launched tomorrow “for the purpose of making UK Basketball the top NIL destination in College Basketball.” Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari and others are scheduled to be part of the launch.” Also from Jones: “As part of the new Kentucky Basketball NIL Fund, fans will be able to participate in ways that include donations but also being active in non-financial ways.” (link)

+ Western Carolina will hire Gardner-Webb Men’s Basketball HC Tim Craft for the same post, according to The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. (link)
+ Oregon State Men’s Basketball HC Wayne Tinkle will return for another campaign in Corvallis. (link) + Louisville AD Josh Heird says he won’t be using a search firm for his Men’s Basketball hiring process. (link)
+ West Virginia is moving ahead with a national Men’s Basketball HC search. (link)
+ Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick, who is also a founding member of the West Virginia-focused Country Roads Trust, is adamant that former Mountaineers Men’s Basketball HC Bob Huggins will not return to Morgantown: “I think WVU and their handling of the Bob Huggins debacle probably were too lenient with him. Had he worked for me, he would have not had a job after he engaged in this series of homophobic remarks back in the spring and then was retained under very difficult circumstances and then lost his job as a result of a drunken stupor, I will call it. And it's the second time he lost a job because of drunkenness. It may not be remembered by many, but it is by me, he was let go by Cincinnati for exactly the same reason. I think he has no place in the lives of young men who deserve quality leadership, so I would be one that would wonder about the mental capacity of any leader of any university who would consider hiring him for a coaching position. … His future with WVU sports is totally at an end.” (link)
+ Ole Miss Men’s Basketball HC Chris Beard has agreed to a six-year contract extension through the 2029-30 season. (link)
+ A year after Arizona State and Men’s Basketball HC Bobby Hurley announced a contract extension through the 2025-26 season, an enforceable agreement has yet to be signed. The new contract includes a $2M buyout should Hurley leave for another program, and USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Jason Wolf note the term sheet both sides are working off of now is non-binding. Meanwhile, Hurley’s current contract expires June 30, after which point Hurley could leave ASU and owe the Sun Devils nothing. Hurley’s agent, Matthew Kelly of Excel Sports Management, tells USA Today: “We should have this thing done in the next couple of days. I’d say that getting stuff done at Arizona State, and not just [former AD] Ray [Anderson] but a lot of the folks there sometimes, it’s just a challenge, to say that in the nicest way.” Marquette National Law Institute Founder Martin Greenburg says this situation is “extraordinarily unusual,” adding: “Most term sheets say, ‘good faith negotiation,’ they put a drop-dead date on it, which is important, and basically there is a contract that comes out of that. Even with some of the most recent hires in college football, with the jumping going on, there were term sheets and they were followed by contracts. Signed contracts.” (link)

Murray State has received $1.4M in gifts from the Jim Bob Kevil estate and the former Racer Foundation to support the capital campaign initiatives to enhance the athletics footprint. Racers AD Nico Yantko: "Mr. Kevil was an avid supporter of Murray State Athletics and we cannot thank him enough for this incredibly generous investment into our athletics department during his lifetime. These transformational gifts will have a major impact on our future plans as we continue to make significant progress around our facilities and the student-athlete experience." (link)

LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey downplays the kerfuffle that occurred at the end of the SEC Championship game against South Carolina: “When you have two tough teams that play so hard that are so good and compete, those kinds of things happen. And it’s so out of control with the media right now. You don't get this much attention when men do it, so why do you keep writing it about the women? It really comes across, and I'll just say it, it comes across as a little bit sexist. … Nobody got in a fight. There were no punches thrown. There was nobody choked. It was a shoving match. Whoop-dee-doo.” (link)

Extra Points’ Matt Brown reports that while bowl games are expected to be included in EA Sports College Football 25, bowl stadiums “that are NOT NFL stadiums or campus sites will not be included in *this year's game*. Financial Times’ Olaf Storbeck profiles Adidas’ ascension under CEO Bjørn Gulden, who took over at the beginning of 2023, and notes the company, “which was originally bracing for an annual loss of up to [$765.4M] last year, is expected on Wednesday to confirm operating profit of [$293M]. Meanwhile, shares of Adidas are up 48% since Gulden took over while Nike and Puma are both trading down. During his first year, damage control was Gulden’s top priority after the company ended its partnership with Kanye West. As a result, Adidas lost 5% of its annual revenue and more than a quarter of its overall operating profits. Gulden’s solution was to sell Yeezy shoes and donate parts of the proceeds to charities fighting hate speech. Storbeck: “Adidas dodged a whopping financial hit while being able to argue it was doing good with the remaining stock.” Gulden has also rekindled the company’s relationships with retailers, and Intersport Deutschland COO Frank Geisler tells Storbeck: “We can already see a much improved focus on client’s needs. We have seen the first new products which will be in stores next winter. I’m really looking forward to them.” Challenges remain, including what some employees consider to be an “erratic” managerial style in which he sometimes picks favorites. Gulden pushes back, saying that rather than “discussing with 100 people of which 90 don’t have a clue, I try to find the 10 who really matter.” (link, link)

And now the results: Adidas’ revenue for 2023 QB fell 8% to $5.2B, leaving the company with a net loss of $393M. According to Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen, “North America, which is the second biggest market for the brand, was the worst performer with revenue down 25% to $1.3B. Business in Europe (-10%), Asia-Pacific (-6%) and Latin America (-12%) all declined. The lone bright spot was Greater China, up 29% to $730M.” For the full year, revenue dropped by 5% to $23.3B with a net loss of $82M. It was the company’s first annual loss since 1992. (link)
