Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has released a statement regarding Nebraska AD Trev Alberts’ decision to take the same job at Texas A&M: “The University of Nebraska has existed as an institution for more than a century and a half. It is immeasurably bigger than any one person. But leadership matters, and the long-term success of our University depends immensely on having committed public servants as its leaders. I am deeply disappointed by Trev Alberts’ decision to leave so soon after restating his commitment to Nebraska and I don’t fully understand or know his reasons why. I do know that the time for reflecting on the failures of University leadership, which led to his decision, must come later. Now is the time to act. This morning, I am issuing a call to action to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. It has been 206 days since Ted Carter announced his departure as president. It is unacceptable that the University’s elected leaders have failed during this time to appoint permanent leadership. It is imperative that they act urgently and decisively to end this uncertainty. Without any delay, they should support Interim President Chris Kabourek’s efforts to immediately appoint a new permanent athletic director.” (link)

The NCAA has updated its memo concerning two-time transfers ahead of the basketball and spring football windows, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who explains: “Similar to the language dispersed by the governing body two months ago, multi-time transfers who enter the portal this spring will be eligible to play at a new school in the 2024-25 year without securing a waiver.” As it did in December, the memo also states that “as long as the undergraduate student-athlete transfers to another Division I institution during the 2023-24 academic year, the student-athlete will not be subject to Bylaw 14.5.5.1 during the 2024-25 academic year.” (link)

After hearing from multiple sources that midday tomorrow is the “drop-dead” deadline for FBS conferences and Notre Dame to inform the College Football Playoff whether they are on board for 2026 and beyond, ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports that each league and Notre Dame “are expected to sign a legal agreement by midday on Friday. It’s a memorandum of understanding that lays out broad terms of what the next contract will look like. The G5 commissioners have been in a difficult position without any negotiating power, but sources indicate they won’t choose being excluded from the CFP. ‘It’s like the Godfather’s offer you can’t refuse,’ one Group of 5 athletic director told me.” (link, link)

According to a poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 55% of American adults believe NCAA athletes should not be permitted to form unions that would allow them to collectively bargain with their schools as employees. However, younger Americans, Democrats and Independents are more open to unionization. About 6 in 10 adults under the age of 45 support allowing college athletes to form unions. That figure drops to 36% among those between the ages of 45-59 and 23% among those 60 and older. Across party lines, 56% of Democrats and about half of Independents say athletes should be permitted to form unions. Only 23% of Republicans are supportive. Additionally, 55% of non-white adults support college athletes being allowed to unionize, compared to 34% of white adults. The survey also found that 53% of U.S. adults say colleges and universities with major athletic programs should provide athletes with a share of any revenue received from broadcast rights. However, less than half support giving athletes additional spending money, a salary or exemptions from certain academic courses that they need to graduate. (link)

Ad inventory for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is “very well-sold,” according to a Disney spokesperson. According to Ad Age’s Jon Springer and Parker Herren, demand has “grown substantially” following last year’s record viewership, as has pricing. A 30-second spot for the championship game costs around $500K, up from less than $100K within the past few years, according to one buyer. Springer and Harren also point out that in past years, it was “easy to grab ad inventory à la carte" for the women’s tournament; however, this year, ESPN asked for a $1M "minimum commitment to advertise during the tournament, and a dollar-for-dollar spend match across other women’s sports properties.” (link)

Former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski would like the NCAA to hold off on making any decisions on expanding March Madness and tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel: "You don't change something now not knowing – is there going to be an NCAA? If there will be an NCAA, what will it be? Before you start messing around with [the tournament], understand what it is. It's a treasure. It's not something where you flippantly say, 'Let's go to 96 [teams].' Everyone, just keep quiet and recognize the treasure we have." VCU AD Ed McLaughlin adds: "It worries me every day of my life. Not only because we're so focused on men's basketball and women's basketball and how important the sport is for our institution. But it's the single greatest sporting event in our country. More people get involved in March Madness as casual sports fans, really, than anything else." For the most part, college sports leaders seem to understand and agree that any changes to the tournament should be minimal. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt, for instance, says: “There's very good reason to believe the tournament should stay relatively similar to what we've been used to." Lots more from Thamel, including “current NCAA tournament multimedia rights deal is considered by many around the television industry as one of the most imprudent financial decisions in the history of major televised sports.” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell contends that in men’s basketball the “era of the larger-than-life coaching icon is over.” Prisbell observes that “the days when many of the prominent coaches were recognizable to even casual fans – identifiable by a mere stare (John Thompson), sleep-deprived eyes (John Chaney), a sweat-soaked shirt (Gary Williams), a sweater (Lou Carnesecca), perfectly positioned silver hair (Lute Olson), unrelenting irascibility (Jim Boeheim), towel chewing (Jerry Tarkanian) and chair tossing (Bob Knight) – stand in sharp contrast to the cast of coaches who star in March Madness these days.” Former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese adds: “I don’t know if I remember another time where so many iconic coaches announced they were stepping down so quickly. The bigger question: Are coaches going to stay at the same school as long as they used to? I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Plus, the whole game is changing because of the transfer portal and NIL – it’s having an incredible effect.” (link)

East Tennessee State AD Doc Sander joined the Inside the Dome podcast and revealed that : “...there are issues in the Southern Conference that we're not thrilled with, to be perfectly honest. We want to be proactive; we want to be forward thinking and the Southern Conference is very much stuck in the past. The private schools do not want change; they want to operate like they did 25 years ago. The Southern Conference is the only conference that doesn't allow interconference transfers because, 'Well, we've never allowed them in the past; why should we allow them now?' That's the mentality we deal with on a daily basis." (link)

Tennessee Tech has received a “major gift” from supply chain company Averitt to support the rebuild of Tucker Stadium. Our new stadium and football operations center are central to this effort and will deliver an all-new experience for players and fans alike.” (link)

A total of 16 former female student-athletes have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA “challenging NCAA regulations allowing male athletes to compete in women’s sports. This suit follows in the wake of a legal demand letter, sent by ICONS (The Independent Council on Women’s Sports) in 2023. The lawsuit seeks to change the NCAA’s policies that allow male athletes who identify as transgender to participate in women’s sports. The plaintiffs, representing a broad coalition of female athletes across multiple sports, argue the NCAA’s regulations compromise the fairness and integrity of women’s competitive sports and discriminate against women, violating Title IX’s core principles.” ICONS, the press release continues, is providing “exclusive funding” for the suit. ICONS Co-Founder Marshi Smith: “This lawsuit against the NCAA isn’t just about competition; it’s a fight for the very essence of women’s sports. We’re standing up for justice and the rights of female athletes to compete on a level playing field. It’s about preserving the legacy of Title IX and ensuring that the future of women’s sports is as bright as its past.” (link)

Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded Arizona’s bond rating to negative as the university continues to address a $177M budget shortfall. “The revision of the outlook to negative is driven by uncertainty around the pace of the university’s operating performance recovery following identification of a structural imbalance along with continued integration risk associated with University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC). Inability to right size operations in a relatively short period of time would further narrow the university’s already thin liquidity profile.” Moody’s also cited concerns about “turnover in management, recent evidence of weaker financial monitoring, and ongoing governance scrutiny” in its decision. Texas A&M has officially announced Nebraska AD Trev Alberts as its next AD. Alberts: "From my perspective, there has never been a more consequential time in history for higher education and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Leadership matters now more than ever before. My interest in Texas A&M is not only due to its prestigious reputation but also because of President Welsh's compelling vision in which, I believe, Athletics can play a small but important role in helping Texas A&M achieve unprecedented success." (link); Alberts’ departure from Lincoln has left most in the state wondering why, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, who notes that when Alberts signed an extension with Nebraska four months ago he said: “I love this place. I love the state of Nebraska. I don’t want to be anywhere else.” So, what happened? Sherman contends that “foremost, this departure was about leadership. The fact that Nebraska doesn’t have the viable infrastructure in place above Alberts to responsibly hire his replacement says everything about the situation. The campus chancellor in Lincoln, Rodney Bennett, came on board in July 2023 after Ronnie Green retired and the school handed guidance of Nebraska athletics to the university system president, Ted Carter. But then in August, Carter announced plans to leave for Ohio State.” Meanwhile, frustration is mounting over a delay in hiring a new president as well as the “possible reasons for it, including a divisive political landscape marked by breadcrumbs that lead to the doorstep of the governor’s mansion. … If Nebraska couldn’t find a path to harmony with the unified leadership in place less than a year ago, the task in front of it without Alberts is monumental.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports presidents in the ACC and Big 12 “voted to authorize their commissioners to adopt the future framework related to a new [College Football Playoff], including a new revenue model and concepts around a playoff format — all of which will be part of a new contract with ESPN.” Dellenger notes the difference in distribution between the two sets of conferences, per the figures he reported last week, could exceed $300M. The SEC and Big Ten stand to earn $700M+, while the ACC and Big 12 would net ~$400M. Roughly $115M is slotted for the Group of Five. Additionally, there is not expected to be a participation-distribution concept, as the current model calls for participating teams to earn revenue by qualifying and then advancing through the field. A format for the playoff itself is further from being settled, but Dellenger notes the “contract is expected to include several guaranteed protections related to a format. The champions of the four major conferences and the highest-ranked Group of Five champion will earn an automatic qualifying spot into any playoff. Notre Dame is expected to have its own protections related to a format. Other details of the formula are expected to be finalized after the leagues reach an agreement with ESPN on the television deal.” While a 5+9 14-team format is “gaining traction,” Dellenger notes a 2-2-1-1-1+7 that would grant two auto berths each to the SEC and Big Ten, one each to the ACC and Big 12, one to the highest-ranked Group of Five, with seven at-large spots is also under consideration. Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NCAA Convention to talk about the work of the DI Strategic Vision and Planning Committee, what message should be communicated to Congress on behalf of the Ivy League and lots more. Harris also discussed the possibility of student-athletes becoming employees, though it should be noted this was before the NLRB regional office’s decision in favor of Dartmouth’s men’s basketball student-athletes. Harris: “I can’t even envision how that would work because what we are providing is an opportunity for student-athletes to truly pursue the sport that they've been playing and that they love to play and to provide them all the benefits that come through college sports: the leadership skills, the learning, how to bounce back from failure and losing, team building and setting a goal, working hard and achieving that goal or surpassing that goal – maybe not meeting that goal and what do you do to adjust. So, for us it really is about the student-athlete experience. It’s not an employer-employee relationship in any way, so I don't even know what that would look like.” Check out the full interview on Connect. (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham sits down with Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes to discuss what’s next for college sports and acknowledges he doesn’t know “where we're going from a national governance standpoint. Right now, you have to have a minimum of 16 sports to be at the highest level. [NCAA President] Charlie Baker has a proposal out there that we want to enhance some of the benefits to students, we want to ensure that they graduate, we want to make sure they have great health care. But the financial component of his proposal I don't think has really been fully developed. I think that'll have some impact on the future, whether or not the ACC schools can really compete at the highest level.” Former UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz last year said the $572M Florida State would have to pay to exit the league was “pretty accurate,” but Cunningham tells Barnes: "If Florida State thinks that they have greater value than our league and want to leave, wouldn't we ask to share in the upside of that greater value? So I'm not sure that $500 [million] is going to be enough. So maybe it's $600M or $700M to get out of the league. I don't know." Cunningham remains solid in his opposition to the ACC’s recent expansion: “If you want to schedule a nonconference game occasionally on the West Coast, I think that's wonderful. But to be required to go out there on an annual basis, I don't think that's in our best interests for our student athletes. Having said that, we'll do everything we can to make it a positive experience for the incoming schools. … But I also believe that if you have an opinion, or a thought, you should express it, even if you don't get unanimity in a vote.” More from Cunningham. A 277-page congressional commission report released this month envisions wide-scale changes to the USOPC movement. Recommendations include a greater role for government and oversight, governance changes for the USOPC, and greater independence for athletes and the U.S. Center for SafeSport. However, USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland tells SBJ’s Rachel Axon the committee is not content to wait for Congress to put the recommendations into action: “With the amount of time and the practical realities of getting anything to happen in the government, it would be irresponsible of me to sit back and hope. We’re going to work on the things we can influence.” University of Baltimore law professor Dionne Koller, who co-chaired the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics: “I believe in all the recommendations. I think they’re all doable because they were a result of a bipartisan commission that came to consensus as we studied the issues and saw where the facts led us.” Anthem Engineering Chief Engineer/Commission Co-Chair Han Xiao adds: “We’re cautiously optimistic right now. We’re really encouraged that because of our really bipartisan process, that’s being reflected in bipartisan interest in Congress to be able to draft legislation. We understand it’s an election year. The window is short to be able to get anything done.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit profiles Michigan State Assoc. AD for Strategic Initiatives & Conference Planning Kevin Pauga, whose sports scheduling platform Faktor “now contracts with about two-thirds of Division I conferences…in addition to several DII and DIII conferences. Under the umbrella of a related company, Optimal Schedules, Pauga has also ventured into the pro ranks, with clients that include the NFL.” All told, Pauga says his scheduling work is generating close to $1M in revenue each year, “though it is unclear exactly how much of this he pockets.” Pauga began the project to assist MSU with its nonconference scheduling in basketball. He then offered to help the Big Ten with its volleyball slate following the addition of Rutgers and Maryland. Within a few years he began taking paid jobs and even though the platform continues to grow, Pauga has no plans to leave campus, where Spartans Assoc. AD for Communications Matt Larson says Pauga didn’t necessarily invent his current role, “but if you look at the different kinds of things he does, it is something that is unique to him. If he would leave, I don’t envision there would be somebody coming in and filling that spot.” Pauga: “I am very mindful of needing to be able to balance the two in the current iteration of what my Michigan State responsibilities are as well as the success that has grown the last few years. It is something I am mindful of and intentional about making sure my integrity is at the forefront.” Lots more, including Pauga’s thoughts on scaling the business and Faktor’s role working with the Big Ten during expansion. Ad inventory for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is all “basically sold out,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery EVP of Ad Sales Jon Diament, who says: “This will be the best revenue tournament we’ve ever had.” Sportico’s Anthony Crupi reports CBS and Turner can likely expect over $1B in ad revenue after last year’s March Madness drummed up $968.6M. Diament says the volume for the tourney was “up high-single-digits, in terms of dollars,” while pricing is up over last year’s rates by mid- to high-single-digit percentages. Crupi also notes that “among the categories that have invested the most in this year’s tourney are insurance, quick-serve restaurants, automotive and financial services. While neither media partner makes a practice of disclosing their going rates for in-game inventory, buyers said the early rounds priced out at a few hundred-thousand dollars per 30-second spot, while the cost of buying a unit in the title game ranges between $2.3M and $2.4M a pop.” (link)

Leaders of the ATP and WTA are attempting to secure an investment of at least $1B from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), according to The Athletic’s Matthew Futterman. Altogether, the investments could “immediately increase the total revenues and investment in tennis — which are between $2.5B and $3B — by roughly a third. According to people familiar with the proposal, who remain anonymous to protect relationships. The bulk of the money will go toward purchasing a license for a new top-level mixed event in Saudi Arabia. There is also money for additional sponsorships.” Futterman also notes the proposal “accounted for Saudi Arabia’s pending deal to host the WTA Tour Finals, which is yet to be announced but is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.” Whether a deal with the PIF is ever executed remains to be seen, as Futterman notes there remains disagreement between ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi and leaders of the Grand Slams, particularly Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley and UTSA CEO/Executive Director Lew Sherr. The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill that would ban TikTok from operating in the U.S. or force a sale. The legislation calls for ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok or the platform will be banned from app stores and web-hosting services in the U.S. ByteDance would have six months from the enactment of the bill to comply. President Biden has said he would sign the bill if it makes it to his desk, and the White House yesterday said it hoped the Senate would act swiftly. Opponents of the bill are raising concerns that the legislation was rushed and voiced reservations about bills limiting what information Americans could see. (link)
