The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker catches up with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to get more color on Sankey’s March Madness expansion and access positions: “We send 11 seeds to Dayton because that was an agreement to start. But some of those 11 seeds have proven that they go a long way in the tournament. So we do have, I think, a healthy need for review. I understand access, I understand the special nature (of Cinderellas) and certainly respect that, but right now in college athletics, nothing is static. [...] The first time I made a comment, within two minutes, people said, ‘That’s the worst idea.’ Well, that’s actually not an intellectual exercise. I hope there’s some effort to think through things. You have to give credit to teams like Saint Peter’s a couple years ago, Florida Atlantic’s run. There are great stories and we certainly want to respect those great stories, but things continue to change. There’s nothing wrong with a review, and again, I think that’s the healthy kind of conversation that should take place. No time pressure, no expectation among teams. Should we be looking at how we’ve allocated teams for 30 years? Are there other things that should be considered? Sure. That doesn’t predict only this or not that. Iowa State AD & DI Men’s Basketball Committee member Jamie Pollard via X last night: “This is my fifth year doing this - never have enjoyed Sat night because of how hard it is to select the final teams. This year is harder than all my previous years combined. Just gut wrenching knowing some very good teams will unfortunately not be dancing.” (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel reiterates his position that the College Football Playoff negotiations are a far bigger threat to the future of college sports than NIL or student-athlete employment. “If the Big Ten and SEC are able to set a playoff up in direct contrast to how college sports have always operated — codifying more guaranteed access, more guaranteed on-field competitive advantages (including a bye) and more guaranteed money — then the operation may be passing the point of no return. This isn’t just about hoarding power — although that’s part of it. It’s about eliminating other teams and leagues from being able to compete on the field, therefore further destabilizing other conferences. We just saw the century-plus-old Pac-12 perish for no particularly good reason. The ACC and Big 12 might be next.” Wetzel calls the SEC and Big Ten’s maneuvering “particularly preposterous” because given their track record, they would’ve likely dominated the number of spots in the CFP anyway. He goes on to write: “This is what Congress should be focused on, not whether players only care about money these days. They might. If so, they learned some of it from the ADs and commissioners who are willing to transfer portal entire athletic departments after another league tampered and offered a better NIL package via ESPN or Fox.” (link)

Former Nebraska AD Bill Moos comments on the exit of Trev Alberts from Lincoln: “I’ll point out in my book that at Nebraska, the regents are elected. That means they have a constituency from their respective districts. So, when there’s a perceived issue, one of their constituents can call the regent, and then it’s like any other elected position in that he or she wants to keep their jobs, so they stick their noses in it. Many times a regent would pick up the phone and get after me themselves. Meanwhile, most of the 90,000-plus fans are content. They’re happy. They just want to win games. [...] You know what else creeps in and takes a foothold? It’s the attitude of, ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ I used to say, ‘Well, you haven’t done it right since 1997.’” Former Huskers AD & legendary Football HC Tom Osborne also chimes in: “As I’ve told you before, the fan base is extraordinary. The facilities right now are in pretty good shape. We obviously don’t have a huge population base. But we’ve been able to attract good athletes. You have to work hard at it because there aren’t large numbers of so-called four- and five-star athletes. There are some, and you have to make sure you keep them here. + According to the contract for NC State Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Keatts, winning the ACC tournament results in more than $5.5M in extra money headed his way thanks to an automatic two-year contract extension being triggered (now runs through April 15, 2030), an automatic $400K pay bump that begins next season and stays in place for the remainder of the deal and a $100K bonus for winning the ACC tourney plus at least a $10K bonus for the automatic bid to the big dance. + Earlier in the week Long Beach State and Men’s Basketball HC Dan Monson agreed to mutually part ways at the conclusion of the season, and yesterday the Beach captured the Big West Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. ESPN has assigned longtime reporter Holly Rowe as the beat reporter specifically for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark for the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Rowe: “We have had a presence on the ground covering the special moments with Caitlin this year, and I have been at every one of her games where she set a record. I see it as an extension of the dedicated coverage we have had with Caitlin all year. I think there is an intrigue and appetite for all things Caitlin.” ESPN VP of Production Sara Gaiero: “(Holly) has been on the Caitlin Clark beat, if you will, tracking and following her and being present with her when she broke records earlier in the year. That level of coverage is needed and necessary and warranted this year. It’s not something we’ve done for the previous first and second rounds for a specific player.” (link)

SBJ’s Terry Lefton reports from the Licensing Summit in New York, where women’s sports was among the main topics. Sports & Fitness Industry Association President Tom Cove observes that the popularity of Caitlin Clark and Alex Morgan notwithstanding, grassroots athletic participation by girls and women is the most noteworthy trend. “Flag football for girls is now a varsity sport in a lot of high schools. In 10 years, 45 states will have that.” In discussing Clark specifically, he tells Lefton: “The question going forward is whether the Caitlin Clark effect can take the WNBA. We think the platform is there now, but it probably wasn’t 20 years ago. … We’ll be interested to see if her shoe becomes ‘the shoe’ for women basketball players. Now, a lot of them are wearing LeBrons or KDs.” To that end, WNBA Growth Strategy Lead Caiti Donovan remarks: “Everything that we are doing, the wholehearted focus is on translating that 3.2M viewership from Sunday night (when Clark broke the NCAA scoring record) into 3.2M viewers for Caitlin Clark’s first game. We are wholeheartedly focused on what and how and where and why the NCAA [women’s basketball] fan is and how we are translating them into our business.” Another high-profile topic was the amount of effort teams and leagues are putting into fan engagement, and NFL VP of Football Development Strategy Roman Oben says: “Every fan wants more content now and I’ve seen it evolve from when players sat behind a table and signed autographs, because that’s what they were getting paid for, to today’s player, who has brand identity and is coming into the NFL with a bunch of NIL deals and social media following. … Today’s former athlete has a way better platform of engagement and walks away from the game with fans of their own brand and a social following.” (link)

Earlier this month, the Conference Commissioners Association voted to move the early signing period for football from the third Wednesday in December to the Wednesday before the conference championships earlier in the month, a move designed to put signing day before the transfer portal opens in late December. The traditional first Wednesday of February signing day would remain and there is discussion of a third signing day in June, but the Alabama Football Coaches Association wants none of that, releasing this statement: “There is a proposed early June signing period for high school players. This would mean that athletes would sign with colleges prior to their senior football season. We believe this is not good for high school football as it would lead to possible re-classifying, senior opt-outs and other issues. Therefore, the ALFCA stands strongly against this proposal. We hope that the decision makers will honor our concerns as a coaches association and urge other state associations to share their concerns about the June signing period.” Auburn High School HC Keith Etheredge is among those opposed: “I think a lot of seniors won’t even play their final year if they are already signed. They’ve hurt high school football with all this. It also adds work for the college coaches and puts even more on these high school kids, who are already dealing with a lot. I don’t think they are even thinking about that.” (link)

JohnWallStreet examines why sports properties spend so much time and effort trying to attract people they think might become fans instead of focusing on the core fan base, and New York Mets Head of Data and Analytics Craig Swaisgood notes the core fans are “the ones who prioritize the team or sport with their discretionary income. … The narrative is typically how do we expand the pie, how do we bring more people in? And you need to keep your eye towards that. But if you’re talking about maximizing revenue, that’s not going to be the most lucrative play.” While the Mets may have as many as 5M fans worldwide, Swaisgood points out that “we have deeply valuable data on about 150,000 to 200,000 fans. Those are the people that we have real insights into. That’s where we make our money. … Run any model you want. Extracting more from the core fanbase is the most efficient way to grow the top line.” Those fans, Swaisgood continues, “have self-selected. They’re choosing what they like with their wallet. Getting them to do more of that is an easier sell.” JWS notes the “other 4.8M can be useful when selling (or upselling) a sponsorship package, or in generating broader exposure for the franchise. Those fans may also consume team-related media. Michigan Football AC Greg Scruggs was arrested around 3 a.m. Saturday morning on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The new defensive line coach has been suspended indefinitely while details of the incident are reviewed. Wolverines HC Sherrone Moore: “Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions.” (link)

Our condolences to the Washington community as former AD Mike Lude has passed away at the age of 101. Lude led the Huskies from 1976-1991 and also served as AD at Kent State (1970-76) and at Auburn (1992-94). Current Huskies boss Troy Dannen: “Mike Lude's contributions to both University of Washington athletics, and to college athletics as a whole, were innumerable. The energy, enthusiasm and intellect Mike brought to his work and to his life set a great example for everyone he encountered. On behalf of the department and Huskies everywhere, I offer our deep sympathies and condolences to all who knew and loved him.” (link)

CollegeAD reports Ohio AD Julie Cromer received a contract extension back in the summer of 2023 that could keep her in Athens through August of 2026. There was no change to Cromer’s base pay of $295K, but there were changes to bonus opportunities that now range from $500 to $15,000, including incentives tied to Bobcat Club growth (10% = $2,500, more than 10% = $5,000), attendance increases for football or either hoops program (up 10% = $2,500 for FB, $1,000 for either hoops), any conference championship is worth $5K & winning the league’s Reece/Jacoby Cup could bring home $7,500. Also pretty notable, there’s no buyout for Cromer if she gives 30 days notice before exiting for another opportunity. (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NCAA Convention to share his perspective on all of the trending topics in college athletics. Frazier specifically dives into the importance of protecting DEI and discusses the transfer portal, solutions to bowl game opt-outs and what his message would be regarding higher resourced institutions breaking away. Frazier cites Title IX as one of his biggest concerns regarding the establishment of a new division: “It’s important to make sure we have equity and fairness, and when you start going down the road with some institutions doing one thing and other institutions not doing that, regardless of whether it’s permissible legislation or not, you create an opportunity and a microscope on saying we allow inequities. You might not say it that way, but you allow inequities. … So I think it’s important to say okay, if you want to have educational enhancements, go do it if you can financially support that. But understand this: We’re not going to get in the way of gender equity and Title IX because that’s something that is inherently a way of life of how we do things here.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake notes the fate of the Pac-2 was a hot topic during last week’s WCC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, where a couple WCC ADs asked Wilner “what the Beavers and Cougars are up to: A straight rebuild? Some kind of merger? Something else?” One AD told him: “We’re trying to elevate our men’s basketball program and commit our best resources to it. The thinking is, that we have to position ourselves as the next most attractive school should the Pac-12 try to take Gonzaga.” Canzano subsequently observes that “it’s possible, I suppose, that the Cougars and Beavers could poach a group of the top WCC schools and form a basketball entity, then rebuild the football conference with a half-dozen Mountain West Conference schools. It’s also possible that the Big Ten and SEC are about to cause chaos by splitting from the rest of college athletics. OSU and WSU are wise to explore options but might benefit more from further realignment. … WSU president Kirk Schulz called it a ‘fine balance.’ He said the Pac-12 needs to avoid strutting in and acting like they’re better than the WCC and MWC. But he added that ‘both of those conferences know that we’ve got a multi-year window here where there’s got to be some final landing spot for (our) two schools.’” (link)

Currently, there are 18 Women’s Basketball HCs earning at least $1M per year, and Indiana HC Teri Moren tells USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell that’s not enough: “You compare it to men’s basketball and it’s not even close. We have to keep closing that gap, especially with women head coaches. We need to get more women in the million-dollar club.” Schnell notes the number of WBB HCs in the $1M club has risen to 18 from 11 in 2022 despite two coaches who were making over $1M retiring (Rutgers’ C. Vivian Stringer and Texas A&M’s Gary Blair). Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff/SWA Chris Plonsky tells Schnell: “We all know what pays the bills right now under the current model and it's successful football. But I also know that when football is unsuccessful and people continue to be paid for not coaching and universities are having payouts for non-performers, the irony of that has flipped around where leaders, presidents have said, 'If we're going to invest money (let's invest) in people whose work we can watch.' Dawn (Staley) and Kim Mulkey and Vic Schaefer, they’ve earned every penny." Southern Utah sports economics professor David Berri notes TV deals are one major factor in holding down WBB HCs’ pay. “The TV deals people make for them, they’re really lousy. In women’s basketball, one thing that holds back women’s revenue is the NCAA is run by men, who don’t try very hard” to sell women’s sports. More from Schnell. (link)

The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee and the Association's office of inclusion have recognized three individuals as 2024 Champions of Diversity and Inclusion. Thomas Harris (Sr. Assoc. AD for Belonging and Engagement at Arizona), Doug Knuth (Southern Utah AD) and Richard Zhu (Patriot League Asst. Commissioner for Sport Management and Engagement) were selected for their work throughout the community and on campus in supporting ethnic minorities and other underrepresented populations in intercollegiate athletics. Oklahoma Assistant Professor Daniel Springer and Arkansas Assistant Professor Molly Harry pen a piece called ‘Faculties’ Contradictory Perspectives of Intercollegiate Athletics’ for the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport, an adapted version of which has been included in AthleticDirectorU. They got responses from 216 faculty members from a Midwestern, public, R1 institution that is a Power 5 school and divided responses into four groups: general perceptions of athletics; athletics as education; athletics as art; and athletics as a business. Former NCAA President Myles Brand suggested that faculty members hold either a “standard view” of athletics as simply extracurricular activities with minimum educational value, or an “integrated view,” which recognizes athletics as an integral component of the educational experience. Spring and Harry: “One particularly prominent finding was how strongly faculty disagreed with the notion of viewing coaches as educators in the same light as themselves, a key component of the integrated view. … Faculty also viewed the athletic department as a business operating within the broader campus community, wishing for its finances to be handled like many other departments across the university. Yet, they also believed the department should stand on its own financially, reflecting mixed feelings about how closely athletics should be integrated into academic life.” The duo’s suggestions for ADs: 1) highlight connections between academics and athletics and 2) redefine athletics’ role in higher education to reshape athletic departments to align more with academic standards or foster partnerships that bring educational and athletic goals closer together. Former Arkansas State Football student-athlete Blaise Taylor, who was recently named as an analyst on the Texas A&M staff and is the son of the Aggies AHC Trooper Taylor, was arrested in Utah on Thursday after being indicted by a “grand jury and charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the poisoning deaths of his girlfriend and her five-month-old fetus” in 2023, which Taylor is alleged to have fathered. Texas A&M announced Friday night that Blaise Taylor is suspended “pending an investigation.” Aggies HC Mike Elko released a statement: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this heartbreaking situation, including the family and friends of the victim. It’s essential to allow the courts to handle this situation with the diligence and fairness it demands. We also would like to extend our prayers and support to Coach Trooper Taylor, Dr. Evelyn Taylor and their family as they navigate this extremely difficult time.” (link)

Puck’s Julia Alexander takes a shot at unpacking Netflix’s live sports strategy and notes the median age for individuals watching live events has gone up in recent years, “topping 50 for the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and Golden Globes—an increase of 10 years since 2000.” For MLB, the average viewer is 55, while the average NFL and NBA viewer is 48 and 37, respectively. It makes sense, then, that Netflix pointed out in its WWE Raw deal that Raw has the youngest audience in the 18-49 audience demographic for advertisers, and Alexander notes: “If Netflix wants to get into sports, but isn’t willing to pony up for the pricey rights (NFL, NBA, etcetera), it needs partnerships like the WWE deal. … [Co-CEO Ted] Sarandos and Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria will almost certainly attempt to buy other rights packages at some point, but in the meantime, gathering audience data from one-off events is very much The Netflix Way to determine product-market fit. … Events like WWE also provide enough predictive behavior—not just who comes in for the event, but what they watch after—to better build a strategic plan around that group of customers. The more that Netflix can create different ecosystems for these events, the more it can keep those customers engaged after an episode of Raw. So if the goal is reducing churn and making more revenue per user, live events—and their ability to create a less risky slate—are basically perfect puzzle pieces.” Full article. (link)
