Outgoing Nebraska AD Trev Alberts tells the Omaha World-Herald’s Sam McKeown that he didn’t apply for the Texas A&M job and “wasn’t trying to leave” Lincoln when the Aggies reached out. As for why he ultimately decided to take the position, Alberts says TAMU President Mark Welsh made a strong pitch: “These are hard jobs — they’re even harder now than they’ve ever been — and leadership is just really critical. Maybe not to everyone, but it really is to me. So Gen. Welsh sold me on a really compelling vision. It’s compelling, and he’s a compelling person. That was the reason. Everybody’s looking for some crazy (reason) but you don’t have to run to do that. It’s a unique opportunity at a great school with defined leadership.” Asked about NU’s ongoing presidential search, Alberts tells McKeown: “I’m not going to say anything bad about my alma mater. I love Nebraska. But I think it’s fairly obvious there are some challenges. I think the layperson can probably figure that out. I think some of the challenges are reflective of where we are as a society as far as divisive things that are part of our everyday culture. It is what it is.” While the $450M upgrade to Memorial Stadium is no longer his project to shepherd, Alberts believes it should go forward. “I think it’s going to be critically important to Nebraska’s future. A lot of people are invested in it. It’s a really good plan. I would be really surprised if it didn’t move forward.” (link); Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek says he spoke with Alberts several times in recent days about Alberts’ opportunity at Texas A&M and notes Alberts did not ask for anything in those discussions, nor did he express frustrations with his current job. “You’ll have to ask Trev in terms of why he felt this opportunity had his name on it, was the right time for him to make this move at this point.” (link)

In discussing potential March Madness expansion with ESPN’s Pete Thamel, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey remarked: “Nothing remains static. I think we have to think about the dynamics around Division I and the tournament.” Sankey pointed to UCLA’s run from the First Four to the Final Four in 2021 and Syracuse's run to the round of 16 beginning with a play-in game in Dayton in 2018 and said: "That just tells you that the bandwidth inside the top 50 is highly competitive. We are giving away highly competitive opportunities for automatic qualifiers [from smaller leagues], and I think that pressure is going to rise as we have more competitive basketball leagues at the top end because of expansion." (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich and Pete Thamel update their reporting on the College Football Playoff revenue and ESPN deal talks: Dinich: “After another set of calls and meetings today, sources told ESPN both the internal memorandum of understanding between the leagues and ND and the TV agreement w/ ESPN are now in the final stages, with signatures expected on the deal in the next 24 hours.” (link); Meanwhile, SEC Commissioner Sankey said there is no agreement yet to expand the CFP to 14: “People have talked about 12 and 14. Let’s set those maybe as bookends to the conversation, put them on the shelf, where bookends belong, for a moment, get this 12 thing right, get it locked in, and then we’ll go forward.” (link)

More reporting on a group of the “most powerful figures in sports business,” including North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Tennessee AD Danny White, Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, Philadelphia 76ers owner David Blitzer, Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud, and several others who have created an informal “think tank” with the “expressed intent of fixing college football,” according to Puck’s John Ourand. Led by TurnkeyZRG Chairman/CEO Len Perna, the group hopes it can “find a way to professionalize college football at a time when the cost of losing lawsuits, combined with the possibility of unionized players, will cripple most athletic departments, which can simply no longer afford the costs of competing at the highest levels,” Ourand adds. The think tank’s plan focuses on the creation of a single league that includes all FBS schools. “It wouldn’t be an equal revenue share for all the schools. Rather, the system would split the schools into different tiers, with the schools in the highest tiers getting the biggest cut of the revenue. But even with the schools occupying different tiers, the structure would create a counterpart to a players association that they believe is likely to form. … After all, it’s simply not sustainable to have 10 conferences doing their own collective bargaining deals. Schools would find that they have much more leverage as one large entity.” More from Ourand. (link)
|
Ourand continues with news the Big East is likely to extend its media rights deals with Fox and CBS, with a key added detail that the conference is “holding out one more package for a third media partner. Fox signed the Big East to a 12-year, $500M deal back in 2013 that gave the network rights to men’s basketball games. About five years ago, CBS signed a deal for 20 basketball games, agreeing to carry at least four on its broadcast network. CBS is expected to increase its number of games once these negotiations come to a close.” Ourand also notes the collapse of the Pac-12 has given Fox more windows to fill, and “Fox has loyalty to the Big East, which was among the first groups to commit to its then-fledgling ESPN competitor. The relationship between Fox Sports and Big East executives is said to be among the strongest in the business.” The Big East’s media rights deals with Fox and CBS are up following the 2024-25 season. Tulane AD David Harris sits down with the Tulane Hullabaloo student newspaper and notes he’s still in the process of gathering information and “meeting with everyone on the staff, one-on-one, and the questions that I asked each of them to come in prepared to answer is, ‘Tell me something we should stop doing, tell me something we should start doing and tell me something that we should continue to do.” While he may still be gathering information, Harris says he’s also staying on top of facilities updates: “We’re still in the planning process of what we’ll call a Sports Performance Center that’ll be located here within our facilities that will do a number of things, including providing additional needed space for football…additional weight rooms, training rooms, equipment area, as well as a connection with the football stadium to be able to give us some new premium seating opportunities.” (link)

The Oklahoma Senate has passed a bill that would allow universities in the state to pay student-athletes in the event federal lawmakers or the NCAA change the current rules prohibiting universities from hiring athletes as paid employees. Senator Dave Rader (R-Tulsa), a former QB at Tulsa: “I don’t want to put our universities at a disadvantage. We’re talking about a lot of money here, and I take pride when our schools win. But I’m sorry to see something that was really, really good come to an end and be replaced, with the honor of pursuing an education being replaced with a paycheck.” The bill will now go to the House. USF’s men’s basketball and football teams are the most improved in the nation, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, who cites 10 numbers to support his position. The football team’s win total increased by six YoY, second only to Northwestern, whose total increased by seven; the basketball team has already won nine more games than it had last season, which, as of Tuesday afternoon, that was tied for the 17th-largest YoY jump in the nation; football attendance increased by 28%, good for second in the country; average men’s basketball attendance increased by 1,990, good for seventh nationally; and Baker points out USF is the only “FBS school with at least a 5,000-person bump in average football attendance and 1,500-person bump in average basketball attendance. … Colorado is the only school that came close (1,178 more fans in basketball and 10,333 in football).” More from Baker. Speaking of the Buffs, Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has conducted a total of zero off-campus recruiting visits, according to USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, who notes Coach Prime has also not utilized the private air travel service budgeted for him in his contract. By way of comparison, Schrotenboer points out former Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh had 145 off-campus contacts from December 1, 2022, until his departure from Ann Arbor. While the contrast appears striking, Schrotenboer points out that Sanders “arguably didn’t need to go on the road to recruit and has had physical mobility issues since 2021 because of blood clots in his legs and pain in his foot. He also didn’t recruit very many high school players and instead mostly has recruited transfer players – older players who already have moved out of their family homes and might not need to be wooed by a home visit from another prospective new coach.” Meanwhile, CU’s assistant coaches have had more than 90 off-campus, face-to-face conversations with recruits or their family members during this time period. While Coach Prime has had success recruiting, former Washington State/Pittsburgh/Texas A&M/Mississippi State HC Jackie Sherrill insists there’s something to be gained by visiting a recruit in his home: “If he was not respectful to his mother, then I would not recruit him. I signed a lot of players because the mother would say you are the first head coach to come to my house or that you are the only head coach that has come to my house. I could tell more about the recruit's character in front of his mother in five minutes than talking to all the coaches and teachers." (link)

March Madness Live, the men’s basketball streaming app managed by TNT Sports in partnership with the NCAA and CBS Sports, is introducing a new vertical video feed that is compatible with the Apple Vision Pro VR headset. Fans can log in with TV service provider authentication or a Max B/R Sports Add-On and be able to view all the live games airing on the TNT, TBS and truTV. SBJ’s Joe Lemire also notes the “vertical video feature — common on social platforms such as Instagram and TikTok — will provide shortform shoulder content. Multi-game viewing returns as one of the app’s most popular features, which will surely be a hit for those watching the action in Apple Vision Pro.” (link)

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has released a statement regarding Nebraska AD Trev Alberts’ decision to take the same job at Texas A&M: “The University of Nebraska has existed as an institution for more than a century and a half. It is immeasurably bigger than any one person. But leadership matters, and the long-term success of our University depends immensely on having committed public servants as its leaders. I am deeply disappointed by Trev Alberts’ decision to leave so soon after restating his commitment to Nebraska and I don’t fully understand or know his reasons why. I do know that the time for reflecting on the failures of University leadership, which led to his decision, must come later. Now is the time to act. This morning, I am issuing a call to action to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. It has been 206 days since Ted Carter announced his departure as president. It is unacceptable that the University’s elected leaders have failed during this time to appoint permanent leadership. It is imperative that they act urgently and decisively to end this uncertainty. Without any delay, they should support Interim President Chris Kabourek’s efforts to immediately appoint a new permanent athletic director.” (link)

The NCAA has updated its memo concerning two-time transfers ahead of the basketball and spring football windows, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who explains: “Similar to the language dispersed by the governing body two months ago, multi-time transfers who enter the portal this spring will be eligible to play at a new school in the 2024-25 year without securing a waiver.” As it did in December, the memo also states that “as long as the undergraduate student-athlete transfers to another Division I institution during the 2023-24 academic year, the student-athlete will not be subject to Bylaw 14.5.5.1 during the 2024-25 academic year.” (link)

After hearing from multiple sources that midday tomorrow is the “drop-dead” deadline for FBS conferences and Notre Dame to inform the College Football Playoff whether they are on board for 2026 and beyond, ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports that each league and Notre Dame “are expected to sign a legal agreement by midday on Friday. It’s a memorandum of understanding that lays out broad terms of what the next contract will look like. The G5 commissioners have been in a difficult position without any negotiating power, but sources indicate they won’t choose being excluded from the CFP. ‘It’s like the Godfather’s offer you can’t refuse,’ one Group of 5 athletic director told me.” (link, link)

According to a poll from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 55% of American adults believe NCAA athletes should not be permitted to form unions that would allow them to collectively bargain with their schools as employees. However, younger Americans, Democrats and Independents are more open to unionization. About 6 in 10 adults under the age of 45 support allowing college athletes to form unions. That figure drops to 36% among those between the ages of 45-59 and 23% among those 60 and older. Across party lines, 56% of Democrats and about half of Independents say athletes should be permitted to form unions. Only 23% of Republicans are supportive. Additionally, 55% of non-white adults support college athletes being allowed to unionize, compared to 34% of white adults. The survey also found that 53% of U.S. adults say colleges and universities with major athletic programs should provide athletes with a share of any revenue received from broadcast rights. However, less than half support giving athletes additional spending money, a salary or exemptions from certain academic courses that they need to graduate. (link)

Ad inventory for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is “very well-sold,” according to a Disney spokesperson. According to Ad Age’s Jon Springer and Parker Herren, demand has “grown substantially” following last year’s record viewership, as has pricing. A 30-second spot for the championship game costs around $500K, up from less than $100K within the past few years, according to one buyer. Springer and Harren also point out that in past years, it was “easy to grab ad inventory à la carte" for the women’s tournament; however, this year, ESPN asked for a $1M "minimum commitment to advertise during the tournament, and a dollar-for-dollar spend match across other women’s sports properties.” (link)

Former Duke Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski would like the NCAA to hold off on making any decisions on expanding March Madness and tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel: "You don't change something now not knowing – is there going to be an NCAA? If there will be an NCAA, what will it be? Before you start messing around with [the tournament], understand what it is. It's a treasure. It's not something where you flippantly say, 'Let's go to 96 [teams].' Everyone, just keep quiet and recognize the treasure we have." VCU AD Ed McLaughlin adds: "It worries me every day of my life. Not only because we're so focused on men's basketball and women's basketball and how important the sport is for our institution. But it's the single greatest sporting event in our country. More people get involved in March Madness as casual sports fans, really, than anything else." For the most part, college sports leaders seem to understand and agree that any changes to the tournament should be minimal. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt, for instance, says: “There's very good reason to believe the tournament should stay relatively similar to what we've been used to." Lots more from Thamel, including “current NCAA tournament multimedia rights deal is considered by many around the television industry as one of the most imprudent financial decisions in the history of major televised sports.” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell contends that in men’s basketball the “era of the larger-than-life coaching icon is over.” Prisbell observes that “the days when many of the prominent coaches were recognizable to even casual fans – identifiable by a mere stare (John Thompson), sleep-deprived eyes (John Chaney), a sweat-soaked shirt (Gary Williams), a sweater (Lou Carnesecca), perfectly positioned silver hair (Lute Olson), unrelenting irascibility (Jim Boeheim), towel chewing (Jerry Tarkanian) and chair tossing (Bob Knight) – stand in sharp contrast to the cast of coaches who star in March Madness these days.” Former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese adds: “I don’t know if I remember another time where so many iconic coaches announced they were stepping down so quickly. The bigger question: Are coaches going to stay at the same school as long as they used to? I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Plus, the whole game is changing because of the transfer portal and NIL – it’s having an incredible effect.” (link)

East Tennessee State AD Doc Sander joined the Inside the Dome podcast and revealed that : “...there are issues in the Southern Conference that we're not thrilled with, to be perfectly honest. We want to be proactive; we want to be forward thinking and the Southern Conference is very much stuck in the past. The private schools do not want change; they want to operate like they did 25 years ago. The Southern Conference is the only conference that doesn't allow interconference transfers because, 'Well, we've never allowed them in the past; why should we allow them now?' That's the mentality we deal with on a daily basis." (link)

Tennessee Tech has received a “major gift” from supply chain company Averitt to support the rebuild of Tucker Stadium. Golden Eagles AD Mark Wilson: "Under the leadership of Coach Wilder, and with the generous support of partners like Averitt, Tennessee Tech University is building a championship-grade football team that is poised to win on and off the field. Our new stadium and football operations center are central to this effort and will deliver an all-new experience for players and fans alike.” (link)

A total of 16 former female student-athletes have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA “challenging NCAA regulations allowing male athletes to compete in women’s sports. This suit follows in the wake of a legal demand letter, sent by ICONS (The Independent Council on Women’s Sports) in 2023. The lawsuit seeks to change the NCAA’s policies that allow male athletes who identify as transgender to participate in women’s sports. The plaintiffs, representing a broad coalition of female athletes across multiple sports, argue the NCAA’s regulations compromise the fairness and integrity of women’s competitive sports and discriminate against women, violating Title IX’s core principles.” ICONS, the press release continues, is providing “exclusive funding” for the suit. ICONS Co-Founder Marshi Smith: “This lawsuit against the NCAA isn’t just about competition; it’s a fight for the very essence of women’s sports. We’re standing up for justice and the rights of female athletes to compete on a level playing field. It’s about preserving the legacy of Title IX and ensuring that the future of women’s sports is as bright as its past.” (link)

Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded Arizona’s bond rating to negative as the university continues to address a $177M budget shortfall. “The revision of the outlook to negative is driven by uncertainty around the pace of the university’s operating performance recovery following identification of a structural imbalance along with continued integration risk associated with University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC). Inability to right size operations in a relatively short period of time would further narrow the university’s already thin liquidity profile.” Moody’s also cited concerns about “turnover in management, recent evidence of weaker financial monitoring, and ongoing governance scrutiny” in its decision.
