Alabama AD Greg Byrne receives a contract extension into 2031 that will pay him a base salary of $1.56M to start with incremental raises to $2.3M in the final year of the deal. Byrne would owe Alabama $5M if he leaves on or before June 30, 2027. That figure decreases to $3M for the following two years, after which point it drops to $1M for the remainder of the deal; however, the buyout is waived if Byrne accepts a job as commissioner of a Power 4 conference. AL.com’s Matt Stahl: “Under the terms of his previous contract, signed in 2022 and set to run through 2029, Byrne was to start out making $1.49M in base salary and end with $1.91M. All told with bonuses, Byrne made $2.042M in 2023, $1.943M in 2022, $1.882M in 2021, $1.843M in 2020 and $1.658M in 2019.” (link); CollegeAD breaks down Byrne’s salary year by year and notes that if Alabama lets Byrne go without cause, he would be owed 1/12 of the salary in that contract year. The school will also contribute $400K to Byrne’s retirement plan for the current contract year, $425K next year and $450K each remaining year. (link)

Texas A&M officially introduced AD Trev Alberts, who described the decision to leave Nebraska: "Yeah, very difficult and emotional, frankly. That was a difficult part of this whole transition. I wasn't looking to leave. I've been associated with that university for a long, long time, and as I said in the previous press conference, that's a place that changed my life. Other than my faith in my family, most everything I have today I owe to the University of Nebraska. And so very challenging, emotional and difficult. But at 54 years old, you see opportunities. And Texas A&M is a pretty remarkable place with a remarkable trajectory, with remarkable leadership.” Alberts also discussed the myriad ongoing litigation facing the NCAA: “Slowly over time, because we're batting a thousand in terms of losing lawsuits in the NCAA, is more and more of the revenue that we've been using to fund athletics is going directly to student athletes started with cost of attendance. … If you model some of the numbers, depending on how it gets allocated, you're looking at between a $15-20M number, not one time, annually going forward, that'll be a new expense category that athletics are going to have to deal with.” (link, link)

The new College Football Playoff contract is “ironclad,” but “what’s causing angst in some quarters of the business is the fact that these deals don’t have any kind of out clause that would protect the conferences should the business of college football change materially during the next eight years, as everyone knows it will,” according to Puck’s John Ourand. “The fear is that if universities start paying players—and if players unionize, as they recently did at Dartmouth—the conferences will be stuck in fixed long-term deals with escalating cost structures.” One executive tells Ourand: “These deals are based on the way college sports have looked in the past. Colleges don’t have any way to get out of it if their costs increase materially.” (link)

Speaking of Dartmouth, the university will refuse to bargain with the men’s basketball players’ union, SEIU Local 560, if the NLRB “refuses to overturn” last month’s decision. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich: “The news was expected, and it is yet another step in a lengthy, two-pronged appeals process through which Dartmouth will fight varsity player unionization. That process could take several years and go all the way up to the Supreme Court.” As such, Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the “college’s pledge to refuse to bargain will likely soon provide grounds for an unfair labor practice charge. … The NLRB would then instruct Dartmouth to bargain—Dartmouth’s statement is an admission it won’t bargain. The agency would seek a court order to enforce that instruction. Dartmouth might believe it would fare better with a federal court deciding whether it must bargain than waiting for the agency’s board—which already rejected by a 3-1 vote the school’s attempt to stay the vote.” McCann also explains the players could sue the school under the FLSA and argue they are owed wages and backpay. From Dartmouth’s statement: “While we continue to negotiate in good faith with multiple unions representing Dartmouth employees, our responsibility to future generations of students means we must explore all our legal options for challenging the regional director’s legal error.” (link, link)

The NCAA is facing yet another antitrust lawsuit, this one filed by North Carolina women’s tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier, who, on behalf of a proposed wider class, is challenging the NCAA's prohibition on college athletes playing in outside competitions with prize money. In the complaint, Brantmeier argues that the NCAA is essentially allowing pay-for-play via collectives while restricting student-athletes in sports that do not generate massive revenues from accepting prize money at outside events. “The NCAA’s farcical and anachronistic justification for such restrictions on payments is that the acceptance of money by student-athletes would destroy the NCAA’s concept of ‘amateurism.’’ As a result of her performance in the 2021 U.S. Open, Brantmeier was entitled to over $49K in winnings but was only able to accept $10K under NCAA bylaws. Despite that, the NCAA still refused to certify her as an amateur for her freshman season in 2022 on the grounds that some of the expenses she incurred were not “actual and necessary.” Included in those cost deemed not “actual and necessary” were 50% of the cost of the hotel room she shared with her mother – despite the fact that Brantmeier was 16 years old – and the purchase of a portable scanner to “track and catalog receipts incurred during competitions solely for the accurate accounting of expenses to the NCAA.” More from Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich. The Big East has released a statement on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections which reads, in part: “We have great respect for the NCAA men's basketball committee and the time and effort that goes into selecting and seeding the teams for the NCAA tournament. It is a very challenging job, and we have been advised that this year’s upsets added to the complexity and contributed to the committee's final bracket selections. Given the high level of play in our league, we are understandably very disappointed that some worthy Big East teams were not selected to participate. We will be working closely with our schools in the coming months to best position the Big East next year and to ensure that we continue to be represented in March Madness in a manner befitting our stature as one of the best conferences in college basketball.” (link); Meanwhile, The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman points out the “Big East had 6 schools (per source) that pay out $2 million-plus for NIL this season. Only 3 got into the NCAA tournament.” (link)

CBS led all networks with an average of 1.32M viewers for its men’s basketball telecasts this season, flat compared to last season, but up 5% from 1.25M in 2021-22, per SBJ’s Austin Karp. Meanwhile, Fox was down 3% YoY, averaging 933K viewers (down from 963K) but is up from its 858K average two seasons ago. Karp also reports The CW in its first season with a package of ACC games averaged 294K viewers. On cable, FS1 averaged 200K viewers, marking its best men’s season yet and up 17% from 171K last season. BTN similarly saw a 17% increase for its games (222K vs. 190K). Fox had the most-watched regular-season game, drawing 5.2M viewers for Arizona-Michigan State on Thanksgiving. That game had the benefit of an NFL lead-in. Duke-North Carolina again took No. 2 and No. 3 with 3.199M and 3.076M viewers, respectively. Rounding out the top five was a pair of Kentucky-Tennessee games, which averaged 2.610M and 2.525M viewers, respectively. Overall, UK played in 10 of the 25 most-watched games of the season. UNC, Michigan State, Tennessee and Purdue each had four in the top 25. ESPN had yet to respond to a viewership request. (link)

More compensation updates from Alabama as new Football HC Kalen DeBoer’s 8-year deal starts at annual base compensation of $10M & increases incrementally to $11.75M in the final year. Per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, 90% of the DeBoer pact is guaranteed with no duty to mitigate & no offset. Crimson Tide Men’s Basketball boss Nate Oats’ new contract will start at $5M annually, plus, “Oats' 6-year contract is fully guaranteed if he is fired without cause. If Oats leaves between now and 3/31/26, he would owe a buyout of $18 million. That drops to: $10M on 4/1/26, $4M on 4/1/27, $0 on 3/15/28.” New Football DC & former South Alabama HC Kane Wommack’s agreement with the university is of the 3-year variety & averages $1.7M annually. Tide Dir. of Sports Performance David Ballou will make $950K this season, up $225K from last year and according to Berkowitz puts him in second place behind Oklahoma State’s Rob Glass for highest paid S&C coaches. Memphis has released details of the renovation to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, which will begin this spring and is expected to be completed in time for the 2026 season. The first phase, set to launch in May, includes the renovation of the existing East Side Suite Level Two to accommodate the relocation of media and gameday operations from their current West Side location. Phase 2 involves the “transformation of the stadium’s West Side to dramatically improve the look of the stadium and provide several modern-day premium seating options (including Founders’ Suites, Founders’ Loge Boxes and additional private suites), create a unique interior ‘party plaza’ area for all fans and begin initial perimeter and halo upgrades to create a hospitality space around the stadium.” Phase 3’s potential elements include locker room expansion and upgrades, any remaining perimeter, halo and concourse upgrades and more. Memphis is committing to a $220M investment in the project with the first two phases estimated to cost $195M. Tigers AD Laird Veatch: “The experience over the next two seasons is going to be different, and there may be some growing pains for a short period of time, but this renovation truly represents transformational growth.” Renderings inside. More from NCAA President Charlie Baker’s sitdown with AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer, as Baker talks about the project to build a fan database, which he says has 6.5M fans in it now. “Hopefully, 10M by the convention in January and 25M over the next couple of years. … I really do believe that if we have 25M fans and we know where they live, what sports they are interested in, what teams they follow and what conferences they’ve chased – that sort of thing – and we’re in a position to just constantly, hopefully not overly do it, but just constantly give them information in a consumer-centric way around the teams and the sports and the stuff they’re interested in, I think they’ll respond.” Baker goes on to note he “couldn’t understand why the same athletes who participate in the Olympics and the World Games, which are basically college students representing the United States, get huge visibility in the trials and the games, whether it’s the Olympics or the World Games. They do fine on TV and they do fine on broadcast and they do fine in terms of who shows up for their events, but [the coverage of college events in those sports is] nothing like it is in the trials and the World and Olympic Games and that says to me that that’s because people can’t find them.” On separating the highly resourced DI institutions from everyone else, Baker says he wants them to have more flexibility concerning out-of-season tournaments, roster management and compensation. He reiterates that he doesn’t want student-athletes to become employees, “but you can certainly do compensation agreements without doing employment. In fact, the courts have ruled on this several times that student-athletes are kind of what they call a special status class.” Check out the full interview on ADU. (link)

In the wake of Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts’ departure from Nebraska, a “power shift occurred,” according to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, who observes that Huskers Football HC Matt Rhule “holds a more powerful hand than a week ago” and adds: “If Rhule had an inkling that [former NU President Ted] Carter and Alberts would leave less than 16 months into his time in Lincoln, the coach likely would not have considered accepting the job” and “in this tenuous moment, it’s relevant to note that if Rhule leaves Nebraska to accept another job in football, Nebraska is to receive $6M in liquidated damages…nothing that would stop a major program from pursuing Rhule if he’s seen as an attractive candidate.” Meanwhile, “going back to square one is not a viable option” for the Huskers as the landscape continues to shift, and Sherman writes: “Alberts’ successor will inherit plentiful resources and a lineup of programs under the Nebraska flag poised to continue on upward trajectories. The importance of football to the long-term success of the department is massive. Rhule’s strong feelings for the school and the state aren’t enough to keep him entrenched. But his relationship with the next AD will factor in the attractiveness of Nebraska as a place to coach.” (link)

With restrictions on player movement largely lifted, men’s basketball coaches expect a record amount of activity in the transfer portal. One ACC AC tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “The pre-portal scuttlebutt has been insane, hearing an insanely high number of kids entering.” Meanwhile, Nakos cites sources who indicate high-majors aim to field rosters with payrolls between $1M and $3M, with the top spenders investing over $4M. One agent with several clients who plan to enter the portal contends: “You can buy a really good lineup, five players, between $800K to $1M.” However, another agent disagrees, telling Nakos: “I don’t think you can buy an NCAA tournament team. Some of these programs with the biggest NIL collective budgets bought teams that aren’t making the NCAA tournament.” Also from an agent: “The most valuable positions are generally productive bigs because there just aren’t that many tall enough people in the world, so having productive bigs are harder to come by. I think even backup bigs are hard to come by at the high-major level – guys who can play 10 to 15 minutes and produce. There’s just not that many competent, high-major bigs out there. There’s a premium for that.” Meanwhile, the price range for point guards varies from $200K to $400K depending on the amount of funds available. Ultimately, a source tells Nakos: “There are a lot of big-time programs looking to get back to relevancy fast and the free agency window is officially open. This transfer portal window will be the most intriguing one yet.” (link)

Authentic Brands Group has agreed to a long-term deal to license Sports Illustrated’s publishing rights to Minute Media, which owns the Players’ Tribune and Fansided. The deal is for 10 years with the option to stretch it out to 30, and according to the New York Times’ Benjamin Mullin, “both companies expect the deal, which also includes Sports Illustrated’s Swim brand, to last for the full 30-year term. The companies declined to disclose financial terms but said that Authentic Brands Group was taking a stake in Minute Media as part of the deal.” Minute Media CEO Asaf Peled, who says the company plans to continue publishing the print edition of SI: “In the current era of digital, it’s still not trivial and quite difficult to build your own brand and get people to know and admire it. So once you get the opportunity to work with and grow an iconic brand like Sports Illustrated, you take it.” Additionally, Peled says Minute Media plans to expand publishing operations globally and rehire some of the employees laid off by Arena Group. + The law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King could not fully substantiate several allegations against Fresno State Men’s Basketball HC Justin Hutson and his staff, including claims of abusive and demeaning behavior toward players in practices and games. The report, however, did cite three “elements of consideration” that played a role in “creating pressure on Hutson and his staff, and might account for some of the conduct of staff and players,” according to the Fresno Bee’s Robert Kuwada. One factor involved a deteriorating relationship between Hutson and Bulldogs AD Terry Tumey due to the pressure for Hutson to recruit despite having only two years remaining on his contract. The law firm also found there was a lack of communication inside and outside the program, adding: “None of these three elements of consideration are determinative of any wrongdoing, misconduct, or negative behavior; but each of these elements played a role in shaping the atmosphere and environment within the men’s basketball program making it conducive to compromise.” Also from the report: “The allegations made against the men’s basketball program appear to have little support from those closest to the program. … From the outside, the program appears to be similar and consistent with those in its conference and other peer institutions. There is no neglect for NCAA rules among coaches, student-athletes or administrators. For the most part, the student-athletes liked their coaches. Everyone agreed that the year was filled with negative setbacks that are simply a part of a collegiate athletics program.” (link)

On3’s Eric Prisbell suggests the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament could be the “main attraction. From South Carolina’s undefeated season and LSU’s quest to repeat as national champion to Caitlin Clark’s irrepressible offensive repertoire, the women’s bracket has monopolized the most compelling storylines. From Angel Reese and JuJu Watkins to Clark, it features a bevy of recognizable faces much like the men’s game did a generation ago.” Former CBS Sports President Neal Pilson believes this is more than just One Shining Moment for the women’s game and tells Prisbell: “I think it’s sustainable. Women’s sports and the TV networks have finally seized on the promotion value of the athletes similar to how the NBA features its stars when promoting key games – ‘Lebron v. Steph,’ for example. Such promotion is very effective with the viewers.” What is not duplicable after this year is the transcendence of Iowa star Caitlin Clark, about whom Kosner Media President John Kosner says: “She is that most unusual of athletes who brings fans who might not care about the sport to watch. In my lifetime, that’s a short, short list – including Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.” In fact, if Clark and the Hawkeyes reach the championship game, Kosner expects the TV rating to match that of the men’s championship and adds: “I believe it would exceed the men’s if ABC was carrying the game in prime time – like the men’s – and not at 3 p.m. ET.” More. Iowa fans bought every ticket to the Hawkeyes’ opening round NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament games in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in under 30 minutes. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman notes tickets on the secondary market “are soaring as well. As of Monday morning, a single ticket for Saturday’s two-game session started at $524 (including service fees) on StubHub.” Counting the two likely games this weekend, Iowa has sold out 34 of 36 possible games this season, with the only two non-sellouts taking place during an “exempt Thanksgiving tournament in Florida.” (link)

The Pat McAfee Show will host a live show from the Iowa campus on Friday, March 22, and The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch points out that “ESPN women's college basketball execs told me for years one of the biggest challenges they had was getting other ESPN programs in-house to talk about the women's Tournament. That's changing.” (link)
