The settlement between Washington State and Oregon State and the outgoing Pac-12 schools is now final and states that “no departing member shall have any claim to distribution of any amount of conference revenues earned, due to be paid or, [with exceptions], actually received” in FY25, FY26 or any subsequent year. Revenue received by the conference at the end of FY24 that “was due to be paid or expected to be received by the conference” in FY24 or a prior fiscal year is a “refund payable to the conference” for FY24 or a prior fiscal year. Delayed revenue is not future revenue; therefore, 1/12 will be distributed to each departing member on the last day of the quarter in which it is received. The settlement also includes the following on withholding revenue: “Notwithstanding the distributions described above, the conference shall withhold $5M from the [FY24] financial distributions to each of the departing members for a total of $50M.” The revenue will be withheld in the following amounts per school: $1M in the first FY24 distribution, $2M in the FY24 April distribution and $2M in the FY24 June distribution. Additionally, the conference will be entitled to a $1.5M payment from each departing member. (link, link); The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points out that the revenue WSU and OSU are earning via NCAA Tournament units this season is contingent on the Pac-12 surviving as a league. “If the conference dissolves or becomes a different legal entity, a source said, the revenue earned this month would revert to the 12 current schools, regardless of future conference affiliations. Also, any additional members of the Pac-12 — if we assume WSU and OSU pursue expansion in some form — might attempt to negotiate access to a portion of the NCAA units. And it’s unclear how the CFP would handle revenue distributions if a Pac-8 or Pac-10 were to emerge in a few years, with schools from the Mountain West or other conferences.” (link)

UTRGV has officially accepted an invitation to join the Southland Conference, effective July 1, 2024. Vaqueros AD Chasse Conque: "The Southland Conference is positioned in a tight footprint between Texas and Louisiana. This will allow our student-athletes to spend less time traveling cross-country and more time at home training, recovering, and preparing for competition and will significantly reduce missed class time. With significantly reduced travel, there will be cost savings that allow our department to reinvest in the student-athlete experience in ways we haven't been able to before." Southland Commissioner Chris Grant: "In an era where too many college athletes are pushed beyond reasonable limits by travel related to away games, we are proud to add another great institution to our 'gas tank league' featuring rich competition that is easily accessible to our student-athletes, families, and fans.” (link)

Stanford AD Bernard Muir, in his last quarterly meeting with C-House, an organization with representatives from all 36 sports who meet with administration, was asked to start thinking about what student-athlete employment models may look like, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Marisa Ingemi who notes some Cardinal student-athletes are skeptical the athletic department will keep up with the changing times. Stanford law professor William Gould, who served as an NLRB chairman in the ‘90s, tells Ingemi: “You’d like to think that the leadership here at Stanford would take the initiative in recognizing that the employment relationship exists, and that they are not opposed to athlete initiatives to reap the benefits of the employment relationship. I will hope for that but I don’t know that the past record holds much promise on that.” At the same time, women’s soccer student-athlete Elise Evans: “Some of us are also concerned because we’re still such a diverse community how this affects international students as employees, and things like that. And so I think there’s concern from both sides, but it also excites some people in terms of how they’re going to start making more money. So yeah, I think it kind of varies.” Schools around the country have warned that putting student-athletes on the payroll would result in the loss of sports, and Gould says that “scare tactic could be real because Stanford itself has tried to eliminate a bunch of sports. So I think that it’s quite possible that some universities may say they will cut back or discontinue so as to put the fear of God into the athletes.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann sits down with Jake Krupski, the labor attorney representing the Dartmouth men’s basketball team, who says he was approached by SEIU Local 560 to see if he’d help the players form a union. Krupski believes college-age workers increasingly view unions as crucial to ensuring their voices are heard. “There is a move for younger generations to want more say. They’re not willing to work for $7.25 an hour. They demand higher wages. They demand insurance. They demand time off.” Krupski says more Americans, especially younger ones, are recognizing that life shouldn’t be about working all day every day. “That shouldn’t be necessary to be a middle class American. You shouldn’t have to work 100 hours a week to make a decent living.” Krupski also understands how terrifying presidents and ADs find the prospect of student-athletes unionizing. “People are often comfortable with the status quo, particularly if they’ve excelled under it.” The NCAA’s nomenclature and messaging over the years, Krupski continues, are the reasons people are shocked to see them viewed as employees: “The question that matters” is whether the players “provide services under the direction and control of another in exchange for consideration. Everything else is white noise.” More from Krupski, including how a CBA could potentially protect international players. (link)

Second-round games Saturday and Sunday also drew well, with 131,073 fans buying between 97% and 100% of the available tickets at seven of the eight sites. ESPN starting this week will be integrating links to video feeds from regional sports networks into its main app and website. The rollout will start with NESN with Washington, D.C.’s Monumental Sports Network set to follow this spring and Pittsburgh’s SportsNet Pittsburgh expected to be added down the line. The links will be geotargeted and only available to subscribers of the RSNs. VP for ESPN Strategy Tim Bayus: “This is about improving discoverability of people’s favorite teams and who’s carrying their games.” Bayus also notes that internal research has indicated that avid sports viewers are confused and frustrated by the difficulty in finding games: “What we’re trying to do is solve those consumer pain points. This is a first step in trying to figure that out. We know it’s a meaty one to tackle.” (link)

Iowa AD Beth Goetz joins the Front Office Sports podcast to discuss the experience of watching Caitlin Clark and this year’s women’s basketball team and how the Hawkeyes plan to seize that momentum moving forward. Goetz explains that “anytime you're trying to attract fans it's always intentional, whether in football or baseball or women's basketball. So there's work you do around the outside to showcase what you have coming in. But how can you not watch the game and be entertained? I mean, they've seen an incredibly high level of basketball here at Iowa. There are other stars across the country right now and so those games are really intriguing. You’re seeing upsets. This is probably the deepest women's basketball NCAA tournament we're going to have an opportunity to see. And I think people are going to be excited about that. … And I think we've invited others in, and they've seen what you have to offer and they're going to want to continue to support the game.” Goetz also discusses the Dartmouth men’s basketball team’s unionization vote and it’s important to continue elevating student-athletes’ voices, “and the question just is in what format is that going to look? So, we're all anxiously following and engaging in those conversations and we're excited that we're going to be able to find some resolution.” Full podcast. (link)

New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez Q&As with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer as the two discuss the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee, which Nuñez chairs, and how he communicates with university leadership and coaches on the scope of that project. Nuñez also talks in depth about the process of making a coaching change in football, the evaluation process leading up to that and the metrics for evaluating a good fit for New Mexico. Nuñez on how he positioned UNM to Football HC Bronco Mendenhall: “I'm very straightforward. I don’t sugarcoat it in any way. I try to tell everybody what to expect, what we're about, what the challenges are, because I don't want anyone to come in a month later to say I didn't know. … I want to express to them my expectation, I want to express to them the alignment and what opportunities weren’t taken advantage of in the past that he or she can. I think people always ask, ‘Eddie, are you going to be there for the duration of this coach?’ And I don't sugarcoat that answer either. I'm very straightforward with them.” Full interview now live on Connect. (link)

Learfield EVP for NIL Growth & Development Solly Fulp sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at 2024 PACnet to discuss the company’s approach to NIL based on its longstanding relationships with brands and collegiate partners. As the caretaker of all commercial IP rights for hundreds of institutions, Fulp asserts that Learfield is the largest in the landscape in terms of corporate engagement activity and has the “people power” to support sales, activation and fulfillment needs on the ground, making it an attractive partner in the development of an NIL deal. Fulp notes NIL partnerships are far more impactful when student-athletes are permitted to use their schools’ marks and IP, and he believes brand loyalty and the value of universities’ IP will be unaffected by any potential changes in governance models. “Even with all these transactions you can never take away those experiences that you have at your respective university. Now, you're going to see more transitions and transfers happening with the student-athletes, but I think that the university fanbases will still be entrenched in their universities and I think that brands recognize that.” More from Fulp, including his thoughts on the power of storytelling and the importance of securing the right brand when marketing and promoting a student-athlete’s personal story via an NIL partnership. Pac-12 schools posted a 3-0 record on Thursday of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament to go along with two units Colorado collected by winning its First Four and opening round matchups. All told, Washington State and Oregon State will receive $18M over the next six years, money that JohnCanzano.com’s namesake notes will be added to a “growing war chest that the two schools could use for a rebuild.” That money could be particularly important following last week’s initial reports indicating WSU and OSU would only receive $360K each in the new College Football Playoff deal; however, Canzano notes: “That’s where Commissioner Teresa Gould went to work. The new Pac-12 commissioner spent the subsequent 72 hours convincing the other parties that her two-member conference was worth $3.6M per school (in the first three years of the agreement).” Canzano points out that “subsequent distributions depend on what shape the conference takes in a rebuild or where the two schools land. And lots of people wonder if college football will even look the same by then. There is a provision in the new CFP contract, I’m told, that allows ‘Power 4’ members who move to another league to take their revenue share with them. If the ACC splinters, it could be beneficial for the Pac-12, but wouldn’t necessarily guarantee an increase in playoff TV money.” (link)

Inside Lacrosse’s Terry Foy makes the optimistic case for the sport’s future despite worries about what the myriad challenges facing the industry may portend for sports outside of football and basketball. Foy starts with the premise that FBS will “privatize” and move out of the existing athletic department structure where the players are employees and not required to attend the institution. And “in a world in which football players are not part of a tax-exempt athletic department, they may not count toward proportionality with respect to Title IX compliance. And in that world, all the athletic directors I’ve spoken to over the years who’ve said, ‘If I were whiteboarding my department, I would absolutely have men’s and women’s lacrosse,’ would finally have the ability to do so. And in a world in which driving male enrollment is increasingly important and the appeal of, on average, 37 tuitions being paid from the men’s lacrosse team has greater and greater value, they would have the incentive to do so, as well.” Foy acknowledges, however, that it’s not a given that football players in this scenario would, in fact, exist outside Title IX requirements. Therefore, Foy concludes: “The future of college lacrosse, specifically Division I lacrosse (and more specifically men’s Division I lacrosse) may be very grim. But it may also be brighter than it currently is. I don’t know.” (link)

UCF’s proposed expansion of FBC Mortgage Stadium is scheduled to begin in December and be completed before the start of the 2026 football season, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, who also reports the UCF Board of Trustees has planned a retreat for this week to discuss the project’s financials and updated plans. Also from Murschel: “According to documents, the Roth Tower renovations will include 1,236 club seats, 34 loge boxes, 34 skybays and 25 luxury suites. The project, which involves expanding approximately 58K square feet, is estimated to cost $88M. The club seating area will increase by 40% to approximately 16K square feet as it grows from 900 to 1,236 seats. Luxury suites will increase from 25 to 59 and the school plans to offer a level of ‘sky cribs’ that will provide fans with an open-air patio suite with upscale food, beverage, beer and wine. The expanded premium seating options will help the school generate $2.4M in new revenue annually.” Design and development are projected to be complete by September. (link)

Buffalo Wild Wings, which has some experience in executing fast NIL deals during March Madness, did so again last week by signing Grambling State men’s basketball student-athlete Jimel Cofer Jr. to an agreement less than 24 hours after the Tigers beat Montana State in the First Four. Sportico’s Dylan Manfre points out the one common element among these NIL deals is overtime. “The company has made overtime a critical piece of its college sports advertising and is connected to the company’s Overtime Wingtime promotion, which gives fans six free wings if a tournament game goes into overtime. According to chief marketing officer Tristan Meline, in addition to Cofer, the company signed Kansas women’s guard Zakiyah Franklin to an NIL deal four hours after the No. 8 Jayhawks defeated No. 9 Michigan in overtime, and No. 9 Northwestern guard Brooks Barnhizer six hours after his Wildcats defeated No. 8 Florida Atlantic in overtime.” The deals last for the duration of the tournament and are offered to men’s and women’s student-athletes who make big plays in OT or to send a game to OT. The players are offered financial compensation, apparel and wings. The company did not provide financial details or specifics on how they reach the players after the game. (link)
