NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley takes AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer behind the scenes of the association’s efforts to lobby Congress for support on issues such as NIL transparency and outcomes, the codification of health and wellness standards, the possibility of student-athletes being deemed employees and the creation of a revenue-sharing model for athletics. Buckley explains the NCAA would like to bring “some order to the NIL world by working with Congress on some of the things we just can't do ourselves, like changing state laws. The other thing we'd like to work with Congress on – just about everybody agrees we need some basic rules around competition eligibility. Right now, when some of those rules are put in place, they're challenged. We’re taken to court weekly over some of these things. We can't do anything about that on our own, but by working with Congress, we can empower the association and conferences to set reasonable rules around eligibility and fair competition.” Asked how the NCAA is preparing for the potential of a revenue-sharing model, Buckley cites Project DI and says that concept, in conjunction with some help from Congress, would hopefully provide a way to deliver enhanced benefits to student-athletes without them having to be classified as employees. “We think it’s an important signal that the NCAA put forward…to show that there is a way to do this, there is a way to deliver more benefits to the student-athletes and do it in a way that that keeps intact that opportunity for Divisions III, II and all of I who may not be in a position financially to do the same thing.” Full interview on ADU. Nova Southeastern AD Michael Mominey chats with BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott about the future of the industry, key challenges and much more. Mominey identifies the biggest challenge facing the industry is the transfer portal, stating: “What is that really doing to our business and I think it's hurting it tremendously, because kids see that you can go into the portal, I mean, it's free agency at the end of the day. Some of its DI-to-DII or DII-to-DI stuff, but that is probably the biggest thing affecting us. I just hope we're getting to a point where we understand those parameters have to come back into play. I personally hope we get back to the one time transfer because what nobody's talking about is how is this gonna affect the education? Isn't this about higher education? I want to win as bad or more than the next guy, trust me. I'm a pretty competitive guy, but what affects are the transfer portal going to have on education, kids getting their degrees. To jump around to four schools in four years, you and I know that you're not going to get a degree. It's hard enough to get it as a four year student-athlete at the same institution, so what is that saying about our business and higher education? So I hope the NCAA comes in quickly and puts some parameters around the transfer portal, and gets back to some of the old school stuff where it's a one-time transfer type situation, or you have to sit out. The free-for-all is just not going to be good for anybody in the end.” On the prospect of realignment: “I think where we're going is alignment of bigger conferences, even at the DII, DIII, NAIA level. Of course, we're always looking at regionalization because there's some cost savings and travel and things like that, but there's strength in numbers. Garry Rosenfield, Coaches Agent for Coaches Inc., discusses his process for valuing coaches contracts and why he believes agents are an asset in terms of representation.

For the first time in the history of DII, three schools will have their Men’s and Women’s Basketball squads compete in the Elite Eight: Gannon, Ferris State and Minnesota State Mankato. Gannon is just the third program since 2014 to place both of its teams on the one-seed line. (link)

After a second-straight second round NCAA Tournament loss, Fort Lewis Men’s Basketball HC Bob Pietrack sounds off about the regionalization of the DII bracket: “I think I speak for all Division II coaches that we'd like to see more like Division I tournament. I don't think there'll be any coach in the country that would say no. But it’s not and this is what it is. These games are great. That was a great college basketball game. … Would we like it the other way? Yeah, but will we pout or blame it? No, we won’t. It's not who we are.
