Arizona State President Michael Crow says the Sun Devils are “done with the historical model of athletics being an auxiliary, adjunct enterprise institution where…the athletic department has borrowed money from the University in support of our athletes. We want ASU athletics to be as much a part of the University as any other part of the University – that is, operating the way everything else operates. We’re doing away with a legacy in the design that we think is counterproductive to our success." Crow says ASU’s department will more closely resemble those at Stanford, Vanderbilt and Northwestern, and only after that system is established will the Sun Devils bring in a new AD. “What we're doing is we're changing the financial structure of athletics in the University so that when the new athletic director comes in, the old system won't exist anymore – and we're just about done.” Crow also notes the women’s basketball team loses the most money (roughly $5M) out of any program on campus and remarks: "We have to look at the finances of everything. We're not going to make an immediate assessment. We have to see what’s the solution for…other sports that are emerging. Where we have our most significant issue, relative to the specifics of the issue of sports, is delivering competitiveness at a level that…other fans want to watch. That's really, really important, and then trying to figure out how to pay for it." (link)

NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley takes AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer behind the scenes of the association’s efforts to lobby Congress for support on issues such as NIL transparency and outcomes, the codification of health and wellness standards, the possibility of student-athletes being deemed employees and the creation of a revenue-sharing model for athletics. Buckley explains the NCAA would like to bring “some order to the NIL world by working with Congress on some of the things we just can't do ourselves, like changing state laws. The other thing we'd like to work with Congress on – just about everybody agrees we need some basic rules around competition eligibility. Right now, when some of those rules are put in place, they're challenged. We’re taken to court weekly over some of these things. We can't do anything about that on our own, but by working with Congress, we can empower the association and conferences to set reasonable rules around eligibility and fair competition.” Asked how the NCAA is preparing for the potential of a revenue-sharing model, Buckley cites Project DI and says that concept, in conjunction with some help from Congress, would hopefully provide a way to deliver enhanced benefits to student-athletes without them having to be classified as employees. “We think it’s an important signal that the NCAA put forward…to show that there is a way to do this, there is a way to deliver more benefits to the student-athletes and do it in a way that that keeps intact that opportunity for Divisions III, II and all of I who may not be in a position financially to do the same thing.” Full interview on ADU. Attorneys for the ACC and Florida State were in a Charlotte court this morning to argue two motions before a judge: FSU’s motion to dismiss the ACC’s suit in North Carolina and the ACC’s motion to seal documents related to its deal with ESPN. According to ESPN's David Hale, FSU lawyer says the ACC “jumped offsides, which is a penalty, and shouldn’t get them home field.” Hale also notes that “FSU’s basic argument is that the ACC did not have standing to file its lawsuit in December since they did not have a vote of membership until Jan. That would nullify the ‘first to the courthouse’ advantage the ACC is asserting.” FSU also argues the ACC constitution should require a 2/3 vote by membership before suing a member institution, as the league did before suing Maryland in 2012 and Clemson this week but did not do prior to suing FSU in December. The judge subsequently pointed out that ACC’s initial filing was to enforce the GOR and did not seek monetary damages against FSU until amending the complaint later. Also from Hale: “Judge asks why a Florida court, a state for which just two members reside, decides contracts signed in NC and governed by NC law in the state where the ACC is headquartered. FSU: sovereign immunity, unreasonable restraint of trade, NC contract law similar in Fla. … Judge asks interesting question: Who is the “true plaintiff?” Both are suing each other for mirror opposite judgements. ‘Usually the plaintiff incurred damages and defendant caused. So who is the true plaintiff? Don’t both parties [make that claim]?’” In its arguments, the ACC “came out swinging” with its attorney noting, per Hale: “FSU says they never held a board vote to approve the GoR. ‘Well, why have we been sending them all this money?’” Lots more from Hale. St. Bonaventure AD Joe Manhertz confirms the school did not inform the men’s basketball team of the decision to decline a bid to the NIT. He explains: “Considering the logistics of what would have been an NIT road game, we made the proactive decision Sunday afternoon to inform the NIT selection committee of our concerns regarding roster uncertainty given injury and the transfer portal that would have left us at a competitive disadvantage. Together, athletics department administration and the coaching staff made the decision in the best interest of our student-athletes.” Four student-athletes have entered the transfer portal since the season ended, and Manhertz notes the players communicated their plans to the coaching staff on Sunday. “If they tell us they’re leaving and then we say, ‘Guys, we got one more game so suit up,’ that’s rolling the dice on what kids are going to do. How much are they going to give?” Manhertz goes on to acknowledge that “I think the aspect that I learned the most is to get the [players] in on the decision early, and if there’s something we’re doing, notify the right people. I made decisions that some were good and some were bad. I got to be better next time. Every decision I make is to make sure the student athletes and, as an institution, can get better at being competitive.” (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley talks about his yearly reassignment along with his NBA on TNT team of covering March Madness and says: “The Olympics are the greatest sport I’ve ever been a part of in my life, and this is a close second. It’s amazing. Every year, something happens that you’re like ‘Wow, I’m glad I was a part of watching that.’ And I’ve said, even Republicans and Democrats can’t screw up March Madness. That’s how awesome this product is.” He also compliments the CBS crew: “These guys work so hard. Anybody that claims they know every game going on, they’re full of s***. It’s a lot of moving parts. You kind of glance at every game, but you have to make a lot of your assumptions off the stats, and these guys do such an incredible job with the stats. We can ask them any basketball question and they can have it to us in a couple seconds. … But when you’re trying to sit there and you’ve got four games on at a time and your head is on a swivel, like, ‘Charles, you’re going to talk about this game, Kenny, you’re going to talk about this game, Clark, you’re going to talk about this game. And thank God we’ve got a great research crew. But the first two days of March Madness, man, they are a lot of work. … But man, nothing can screw up March Madness. It’s just incredible.” (link)

The rise in women’s hoops popularity is attributable to more than just Iowa star Caitlin Clark, ESPN VP for Brand Strategy and Content Insights Flora Kelly tells Sportico’s Jacob Feldman, who observes: “Increased TV time has contributed to the growth, and been a result of it. The same holds for structural changes in how fans watch sports today.” According to a Seton Hall poll, four out of the six most recognizable athletes playing in either NCAA Tournament are women. Even taking Clark out of the equation, Similarweb data shows online search volume for high-profile female players jumped 54% from January to February, compared to a 10% jump for top male athletes. Feldman notes that prescient advertisers “have played a key role in boosting women’s sports, seeing the value in those properties and demanding more supply in more appealing time slots. Google worked with ESPN to expand the WNBA’s primetime inventory and SportsCenter coverage. Ally pushed for the NWSL’s championship to be moved into the evening (where viewership jumped 71%). Traditionally advertisers flow to where fans are. This time, they moved to where the fans would be.” The change in how sports are consumed also positions women’s sports for a continued upward trajectory, as Feldman points out: “Sports—with its lifelong fandoms and IRL roots—might be one of the last sectors to be upended by today’s sensation creation industry,” and Kelly adds: “The ability of pop culture to drive audience—I’ve never seen that to the extent that I’ve seen it the last few years. We’re really now—post-pandemic and post-TikTok when sports are on all cylinders—starting to see the impact of social media creating hyper awareness of characters and events for sports.” (link)

+ Michigan Football DC Wink Martindale’s three-year deal with the school includes a base salary of $2.3M, which would make him among the highest, if not the highest-paid AC in the country. Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes weighs in on the College Football Playoff-ESPN deal and says he wasn’t surprised ESPN ended up as the lone rightsholder, especially with major digital media companies such as Apple and Amazon still cautious about entering the market. “The reason why the expectations aren’t getting met is because the economics and ability to monetize these large, tier one properties, it’s just becoming impossible to do it, unless you’re already heavily invested in it. In the case of Fox, would Fox like to have this? I suppose, but at the end of the day they’ve got plenty going on in December and January.” (link)

UTRGV is naming its newly acquired football stadium after longtime benefactors Robert and Janet Vackar in recognition of their history of support from the earliest stages of establishing a football program as well as a new $20M gift. UTRGV President Guy Bailey: "Their visionary contributions, which started just a few months after our university's opening, not only provided financial support but also bestowed instant credibility upon our institution. Their early investments helped put UTRGV on the map and set the stage for our ongoing growth and impact. Their ongoing dedication continues to shape the trajectory of our university." (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams breaks down which athletic departments receive the most in student fee subsidies, and James Madison tops the list with $53.3M coming via student fees in FY23. The Dukes are followed by Old Dominion ($30.3M), Charlotte ($25M), FIU ($23.5M), UCF ($23M), Georgia State ($20.9M), Texas State ($19.4M), Miami (OH) ($17.6M), USF ($17.4M) and Virginia ($16.1M). Novy-Williams notes: “Not only is [JMU’s] $53.3M tops in 2023, it’s also the highest total Sportico has seen in six-plus years of sourcing annual revenue/expense reports for every public athletic department in college football’s top division. It’s bigger than the total 2023 athletics operating budget for more than 40 FBS schools, and almost equal to James Madison’s entire athletics budget the prior year ($57.8M).” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Fischer catches up with Prep Super League Founder/CEO Brian Woods to get a sense of where things stand after Woods initially indicated a target start date of April 2024. Woods says he expects 400 players to participate this year with “no less than 8-10 teams” and notes he may table some markets with hopes of adding them next season. This year, the season will last five weeks instead of six, and Woods says he’s swapped out Phoenix for Las Vegas on the list of markets. Fischer points out that “strategically, a key issue for the PSL is when states will permit high school students to do NIL deals,” without which, participants in states without it would have to choose between high school eligibility and the PSL. Woods expects Florida’s prep NIL legislation to pass this spring, but Texas remains unclear. “We can’t have a national high school league without Texas, just because of the immense talent that comes out of that state.” (link)

When it comes to the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament seeding, NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris tells Sportico’s Lev Akabas: “If you give me a 16 seed, frankly I’d rather be a 16 seed in Dayton with that opportunity to win a game and get the extra unit. … The financial benefit of that extra unit is significant for a league our size.” Akabas notes that this year, the conference upgraded the schools’ LED scoreboards thanks in part to money the league received from units earned by FDU in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Wagner, which won its First Four game this week, had men’s basketball expenses of $1.58M for the 2021-22 academic year, meaning the Seahawks’ share of the NEC’s 2025 unit payout will be nearly 10% of the team’s annual budget. Morris does say that if given the choice between a First Four game and a No. 15 or No. 14 seed, she would take the latter, but Akabas points out those seeds “have won just 11% of their first-round games since 1985, while play-in teams have a roughly 50-50 proposition of winning another unit and the corresponding cash prize.” (link)

The Coloradoan’s Kevin Lytle Q&As with Colorado State President Amy Parsons and Interim AD John Weber, who discuss the impact of March Madness, what it’s been like working together, retaining Men’s Basketball HC Niko Medved and lots more. Parsons says of the decision to bring Weber in that “when I first took this job and got to know John, he had been working seven days a week for more than a year-and-a-half as a volunteer for CSU athletics. Watching someone like John with his great background and success in business paired with his passion for the Rams and how hard he’s already worked for CSU athletics as a volunteer, it was a pretty easy choice to bring him in and continue that passion and application of his expertise in so many ways into the athletic department.” Weber on what’s next and whether student-athletes will be classified as employees: “There’s no end to models that I’ve seen and opinions that I’ve seen. The thing I can guarantee you is that it’s going to be different than it is today. We need to be prepared for any number of those different things to come to fruition but there’s so much that happens at the conference level, there’s so much that happens at the NCAA level that both of us are plugged into that we’re going to have plenty of time to make sure that we’re in a position to really put this university and this athletics program in the right position going forward." More in the full Q&A. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner breaks down the three components of hiring a replacement for former Washington AD Troy Dannen, which include hiring a search firm, establishing the hiring model and developing a candidate pool. Wilner notes that Parker Executive Search handled the Huskies’ selection process that led to Dannen’s hiring and was also the search firm of record for Nebraska when it hired Dannen. “At that point, it became easy enough for Dannen to let his Parker pals know he’d listen to any offer that came his way.” Wilner, who notes Dannen “wasn’t well received on Montlake, according to sources,” believes UW should identify candidates for both the AD and men’s basketball coaching vacancies who have “worked for the Huskies, lived in the Pacific Northwest or, at the very least, experienced the lifestyle of the West Coast.” While some candidates will likely worry about President Ana Mari Cauce’s commitment to athletics, Wilner still asserts the “selling points have not changed: Washington is a terrific school with a passionate, wealthy donor base and a premier football program that, most importantly, will enter the Big Ten this summer.” He also lists six candidates he believes UW should focus on: Washington State AD Pat Chun, Houston AD Chris Pezman, Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe, Virginia Deputy AD Ed Scott, former Fresno State AD Terry Tumey and San Diego State AD John David Wicker. While women’s college basketball continues to gain popularity, the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman notes the opening round games of the NCAA Tournament remain beset by relatively low viewership and a lack of drama. “The most glaring absence in the women’s early rounds is a lack of mind-melting upsets. The men’s tournament had 26 upsets by No. 13-or-lower seeds in the first or second round over the past decade, according to Stats Perform. The women’s tournament had one.” Bachman attributes this to, in part, the 15-player scholarship limit. “In a sport where elite talent is more concentrated than the men’s game, that makes it possible for the biggest programs to hoard more top players.” Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman has proposed reducing the limit to 13 but to no avail so far. Looking toward the future, NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman understands it’s time to capitalize on the momentum. “We will not be stagnant. We cannot be stagnant. So every part of this championship, including how we look to grow those early rounds for broadcast viewership, all of those things, are going to continue to be on the table.” (link)

Sportico’s Anthony Crupi examines Disney’s success selling ads for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament and provides the following context: Former NCAA President Mark Emmert in 2016 “revealed that while the men’s hoops tourney was the only postseason event that makes the NCAA money, ‘women’s basketball loses $14M by itself.’ … Per media agency estimates, last year’s women’s basketball tourney generated some $19.4M in advertising revenue for the ESPN networks and their broadcast sibling, ABC.” Companies, Crupi continues, have come to understand the popularity of the women’s game and the marketing opportunities it presents. “The top spenders were all but indistinguishable from the backers of the men’s tournament, as blue chippers such as Buick, Nissan, AT&T, Capital One and State Farm generated some 3.5B ad impressions among fans in the adults 18-49 demo.” Disney’s “advanced advertising platforms and programmatic buying interface” has also helped sell ads by enabling “marketers to target the highly sought-after college hoops audience across the company’s entire portfolio of linear TV and streaming outlets, thereby increasing the value of their sports buys. Disney VP of Programmatic Sales Matt Barnes notes the programmatic interface allows clients to capitalize on those surges around those moments you can’t plan for. When a brand has the ability to activate in real time around a moment where everyone is riveted to their screen, that’s a lightning-in-a-bottle thing that everyone is looking for.” Lots more. (link)

The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings and her colleagues catch up with 35 women’s basketball HCs “from power conferences and high mid-majors” to hear their thoughts on topics ranging from the transfer portal to the greatest college basketball player of all time. 69% of the coaches said the portal was “more bad” with one saying: “I don’t like it, but I think complaining about it is the worst thing any of us can do. Give me the rules and we’ll adapt and adjust.” Another comments: “Honestly, to me the basketball is better overall at the higher levels. The bad, to me, is that the fans struggle with it. They want to see loyalty and people they love for four years.” Meanwhile, 54% say the recent changes in the industry have shortened the amount of time they think they’ll spend in coaching while 46% say their feelings are unchanged. One coach remarks: “Between the lack of security and having to now re-recruit your own kids at a higher level, with NIL, the time it takes to recruit the transfer portal — it already was an all-consuming job but it’s now unsustainable under the current landscape.” Another adds: “I didn’t get into this to be a CEO. It has just changed so much in the last four years. It’s a completely different job.” The coaches were asked what one change they would make if they could do so by waving a magic wand and responses included various rule changes, increased media coverage, adjustments to NIL and the transfer portal and this from one (and only one) coach: “This is unpopular: lower the rim by a foot. Go to a kid’s thing, like a halftime show. And they roll out the little rims, and people get to do a dunk contest. How f—ing excited does everybody get? They get pumped up.” (link)

All the discussion regarding whether to expand the NCAA hoops tournaments has yet to address whether doing so will come with an uneven revenue distribution model, similar to that which the College Football Playoff has employed, JohnWallStreet observes. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has already suggested such a change may be forthcoming, positing that the “schools performing at the highest levels should receive more of the at-large opportunities” and “those that create meaningful value should have a meaningful say. That’s the world we live in.” JWS acknowledges that it’s “hard to make the case Grand Canyon, McNeese, or Samford units should be worth the same as those earned by Arizona and Kansas. They’re not the ones driving TV viewership, and in turn revenue for the networks and Tournament. JWS also notes: “Adding basketball units of increasing worth could help the Big 12 (and others, like the ACC and Big East) begin to reduce the financial gap with B1G and SEC. That line of thinking may spur further realignment.” To further illustrate that point, JWS cites Yormark’s past comments regarding how the league plans to extract more value for its media rights. “Not to say we’re going to do it, but we have the opportunity to bifurcate basketball from football in our next TV cycle. That certainly provides optionality for us.” (link)

Despite reports and speculation to the contrary, NFL Chief Media and Business Officer Brian Rolapp doesn’t see a streaming-only Super Bowl in the near future. “I don’t think I’ll be working there when that happens. I think we’re a long way off from that. We had 200M people watch the Super Bowl. I think the Internet could handle that technically, but we’re not quite there yet.” Speaking at the Washington Post’s Futurist Summit, Rolapp also explained: “I think the NFL specifically, but sports in general, is really the reason why people are showing up to linear television. It serves our purposes very well: The vast majority of our games are still on linear television and even the games we stream exclusively, like the Amazon games, are on over-the-air television for free in the local markets of the participating teams. … We have made our bet for the next seven-to-11 years that linear television will still play a very important role in our distribution, and I don’t think it’s going to zero.” The NFL’s ventures into streaming thus far have been targeted at recapturing younger fans who have cut the cord, and Rolapp notes: “We add digital distribution to [TV] to maintain our reach.” (link)
