NCAA SVP for Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon joins AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer to discuss his new role, the challenges and opportunities facing the NCAA and more, including how to build consensus, and Lennon explains: “It isn't easy and candidly, in earlier days, I think there was more homogeneity around all of our institutions, whether they be in Divisions I, II and III. The size of budgets, the way they operated and that is clearly changed and that has exacerbated a little bit of the problem. How, within this big tent, if we were just to focus on Division I where the budgets are, there’s so much disparity…how do you have them come together to do something that's for the best for the whole thing? I think part of that answer is we need to make sure that we're allowing those who have the highest resources to make decisions in ways that are appropriate for them. And the more homogeneity you can get around the decisions – and if that means consolidating some of those around different sets of high-resource institutions – I think you make better decisions moving forward with change.” Lennon also says he’s “encouraged” by the SEC and the Big Ten taking the initiative to lead by forming a joint advisory group, telling Belzer: “This is an opportunity to provide some leadership at this critical point in time within our association, so I applaud them for that. Their profile of those institutions, the platform that they have, puts them in a position of leadership, and so I'm really encouraged that they're kind of taking these issues on directly in that regard.” The board members from both conferences, Lennon adds, “supported the holistic model that, you know, raise the boats in support for all of the institutions within Division I, not just the things that they’re doing.” When asked what he believes the NCAA will look like in five years, Lennon notes that evolution is what is occurring now, “but I do think there will always be a need for a national organization. You can't have national competitions among highly competitive people, highly competitive schools without some set of national regulations. So that will exist. It’ll simply be where our membership, where Congress, where others want us to spend our time… and that may cause some reevaluations of things that we don't need to be involved in.” Full interview on ADU. Maryville will add STUNT as its 17th varsity sport, starting in 2025-26. AD Sara Quatrocky: “We plan to attract a great coach and mentor who will build this program from Day 1 by providing a great culture to compete on the mats and in the classroom. The model of success that we've built here comes from the daily work that focuses on academics, health and wellness, mental health, and sport performance to go along with the DIII philosophy.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown points out that one underreported component of a potential federal solution to NIL is the makeup of Congress itself. Democrats currently hold a small majority in the Senate while Republicans hold a slim edge in the House. With it becoming increasingly unlikely a bill will get passed by this Congress, Brown looks ahead to the bicameral makeup of the next Congress and notes it’s possible, if not probable, that the GOP will retake the majority in the Senate and slightly expand its majority in the House. In the event that former President Donald Trump wins reelection in November, Brown posits there’s still “no guarantee that a GOP sweep would lead to college athletics legislation. Democrats may still be able to filibuster, or the House majority may be too narrow to pass laws on partisan grounds alone. But I believe it will make it much more likely that the NCAA could secure an antitrust exemption, or perhaps laws to explicitly declare college athletes as non-employees.” Concerning the conversation around paying players leading to the elimination of Olympic sports, Brown contends: “The choice should not be ‘let the NCAA control all the FBS football money or women’s volleyball gets it!.’ The choice should be: We cannot continue to fund volleyball the way we have before if the business model around FBS football changes. We all agree that funding college opportunities around volleyball and the development of world-class volleyball athletes is important. What are other ways we can continue to provide this experience?’ Every congressional hearing or pow-wow that does not attempt to engage with that question in a meaningful way is another lost opportunity.” (link)

Alma Football student-athlete Carter St. John has launched QBs vs. Cancer, a nonprofit that helps DIII student-athletes raise money for cancer charities through camps and training sessions. 30 QBs have signed up to host $25 training sessions with all proceeds to go to the charity of the QB’s choosing. St. John: “I give a lot of credit to the quarterbacks who are participating in this. We are all working hard in our classes and a lot of us are playing spring ball. Some of us have jobs outside of school. Still, they’re making time to give back to their communities, which says something about their character, and about DIII athletics as a whole, I think.” (link)

The NCAA recently debuted "Change," a 30-second video highlighting important reforms underway at the Association. The spot premiered on Selection Sunday and will run throughout the men’s and women’s hoops tournaments. The spot will also remain in rotation over the next year in broadcast, at NCAA championships and on NCAA-owned social platforms. (link)
