News Dakota’s Ryan Cunningham reports on the latest movement around Mayville State and Valley City State, with MSU in conversations with the UMAC (NCAA DIII) about its exploratory year of membership as the Comets evaluate a possible NCAA DIII or DII move. AD Rocky Larson says moving to the Frontier is still a possibility, adding: “The concern with the Frontier is that they do not offer baseball and softball.  We have 60 baseball athletes and 30 softball athletes, and we need to find a home for them.” VCSU met with a consultant this week to discuss what operational and facility changes would need to be made for a NCAA move. AD Dennis McCulloch says a DII move is driving this exploration, pointing to the connections and expertise of former AD/current Minnesota State Moorhead (NCAA DII) AD Doug Peters. “Ten years ago, we’d just blow over the question, saying there’s no way we can afford to make the move to Division II.  But we never really got the answers.  We may be able to afford it, but we need someone to show is, in real terms, what it costs and what we have to do, so we can decide what our direction is. […] Doug can get access to NSIC leadership with his experience, and also knows Valley City State well. He can help us get information we need during the process of deciding what we can do.” VCSU has also been in contact with the UMAC and Frontier about membership. (link)

William Woods has begun renovations on its Firley Soccer Field to support its incoming Football and Flag Football programs. AD Steve Wilson: “One, we don’t have to worry about the weather. … We were often going 20 or 30 miles down the road to play a home game on a turf field. So, we don’t have to do that anymore. … You know truthful this helps. Seeing this activity out here, seeing that we are well on our way to what’s going to be a first-class small college, football-playing facility. That makes young people excited.” Upgrades are set to be complete by June. (link)
