St. Bonaventure AD Joe Manhertz has resigned after two and a half years, according to multiple sources. The Bona Venture's Allie Elkins reports the move was due, in part, to the Bonnies' decision to preemptively opt out of the NIT, a decision that SBU did not think would become public as it did during an NIT game earlier this week. Manhertz telling the BV Thursday: “For alumni and fans that the NIT means something to, that’s a dichotomy that I didn’t appreciate. What I learned is that [the NIT] means a lot more to the Bonaventure alumni than it does to the Bonaventure players.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman reports on how Nebraska landed Washington AD Troy Dannen: “In a search that lasted less than one week, interim University of Nebraska system president Chris Kabourek first spoke to Dannen about 96 hours after Trev Alberts exited Nebraska as AD for Texas A&M. Dannen, the athletic director at Washington since October after he spent eight years at Tulane, reached an agreement with Kabourek around 4 a.m. CT on Wednesday.” Kabourek: “I knew Troy was the guy because as we were going through the terms sheet, I said, ‘What do you want your start date to be?’ He said, ‘Today.’ He’s hit the ground running. That’s the Midwestern work ethic that Nebraskans are going to like.” Dannen’s intro presser in Lincoln is set for Tuesday. (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft, who has worked closely with both Nebraska AD Troy Dannen and Huskers Football HC Matt Rhule, believes the tandem will work well together. “They’ll be great. They know each other. Troy is very strategic. He understands how to lay out a plan. In this world, you’ve got to know what’s coming around the corner or you’re going to get caught and left behind. I think this is great for Matt and Nebraska football, but it’s also great for all of the Nebraska teams.” Kraft says of Dannen’s abrupt departure from Washington: “It wasn’t a Washington thing. It was a Nebraska thing. It was about Nebraska. It was a great move for his family. That I know was the draw, but I know he struggled. Sometimes timing isn’t always the best, but that’s a perfect fit for him and the family. Troy is really smart. People will see fast, he’s strategic. He understands the shifting landscape.” On his time with Rhule: “I have learned and continue to learn a lot from Matt. I know his relationship with Trev was good, but Matt is cool as a cucumber. (Rhule and Dannen) will get their cadence very quick. I’m just excited for both of them, because I know what Matt needs.” (link)

Thursday’s opening round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament averaged a combined 8.5M viewers per window across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV, per Nielsen fast-nationals — up slightly from last year (8.4M) and the highest opening day average since 2015. The Oakland vs. Kentucky game was the most-watched game of the day with a 3.4 rating and 6.21M viewers on CBS, the largest audience for an opening round game since Duke vs. North Dakota State in 2019 (6.22M) and second-largest under the television format that began in 2011. The full window averaged a combined 10.71M across the four networks, up 5% from last year (10.16M) but down slightly from 2022 (10.81M). On cable, Kansas vs. Samford led the way with an average of 1.61M on TBS, down from last year’s Penn State vs. Texas A&M mark of 1.85M. truTV was up 71% YOY, with 1.2M for Washington State vs. Drake compared to 703K from UCLA vs. UNC Asheville last year. That full window averaged 8.88M, up 4% YOY. (link); Speaking of Oakland, ESPN’s John Gasaway: “Welcome to a pretty wacky round of 32. Since 1985 the average number of remaining teams seeded 11 or lower is 4.7. This year there are seven: Duquesne, NC State, Oregon, James Madison, Grand Canyon, Yale, and Oakland.” (link)

The eight SEC Men’s Basketball programs that made the NCAA Tournament went 3-5 in the second round with notable losses by 3-seed Kentucky (to Oakland), 4-seed Auburn (to Yale) and 6-seed South Carolina (to Oregon). Given SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s recent comments concerning March Madness access, USA Today’s Dan Wolken responds: “The SEC, through expansion and its fan base and its financial commitment to win, has stacked the deck in pretty much every sport for 330-plus days a year. But for the three weeks in March and April, they have to prove it on the basketball court like everyone else. Asking for more than that is akin to throwing up a pair of middle fingers at those who have built and sustained this national treasure that always — always — delivers the goods. Hopefully the SEC’s disastrous weekend teaches Sankey a lesson: Stop trying to make this tournament your personal plaything.” (link)

Yale’s aforementioned victory over Auburn is yet another data point in an improving overall hoops profile for the Ivy League as Sportico’s Lev Akabas dives into the numbers: “On the men’s side, the Ivy League was ranked 11th out of 32 Division I conferences in 2024, according to the metric RPI. That’s the league’s second-best ranking in the past 25 years, with its best result occurring in 2019 and its third-best in 2023. [...] The quality of women’s basketball has been even higher, with the conference ranked 7th in RPI this year. After maxing out at 15th between the years of 2002 and 2014, the Ivy League has been one of the top 10 women’s basketball conferences in the country for most of the past decade.” Non-conference scheduling is a notable challenge for both men’s & women’s programs as Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris notes: “[The Duke women] came to Levien Gym to play Columbia in November because [Duke coach] Kara Lawson was coming to help grow the game. The men don’t do that. They just don’t do it.” (link)

Mercer Ad Jim Cole goes with Mississippi State AC/Asst. AD for Women’s Basketball Michelle Clark-Heard as the new WBB leader in Macon. She previously served as HC at Kentucky State (2005-06), Western Kentucky (2014-18) and Cincinnati (2018-23). (link)

Incarnate Word will not have to pay a $2M exit fee to the WAC as Texas Western District Court Judge Fred Biery has ruled in favor of the institution in a lawsuit involving the parties. Here’s why per the San Antonio Express-News’ Greg Luca: “The ruling stated that UIW qualified as a ‘new member institution’ rather than a ‘member institution’ under the WAC bylaws, and the university is therefore not subject to the exit fees assessed to member institutions upon departure. [...] Though Biery noted that the WAC bylaws are ‘not a model of clarity,’ the document repeatedly makes a distinction between ‘new member institutions’ and ‘member institutions.’” (link)

With Bitcoin trading at a new all-time high, SBJ’s Terry Lefton wonders whether to expect another round of sports sponsorship from the industry, and NHL CBO/EVP for Global Partnerships Keith Wachtel says: “We were just discussing that. There are still some regulatory issues and concerns. Of course, we’ll continue to do our due diligence. We don’t see anything yet at the league level we are imminently or proactively pursuing. And it’s not just regulation — it’s how comfortable anyone is with those companies now, even if and when there is further regulation.” Excel Head of Properties Jason Miller says he is expecting a comeback: “A lot of those are funded or at least supported by their Bitcoin wallets, and so with Bitcoin way up, they’ve got full packets again. Certainly, there will be caution from larger properties, but I still expect a fair number of new deals in the space from brands seeking visibility.” Meanwhile, UEFA last week issued an RFP soliciting bids from crypto exchanges for the Champions League, and CAA Sports Co-Head Mike Levine says he’s expecting a relatively active market, especially in the second half of this year: “The story never told was that a lot of these companies with big sponsorships actually made it through multiple crypto winters before this latest run-up. The market should come back relatively quickly, but the 2.0 version of blockchain and sponsorship will be one in which functionality is more central to those brand’s successes; for NFTs, it’ll be utility over collectability.” Lots more from Lefton. Cleveland Cavaliers HC J.B. Bickerstaff reveals that he has been contacted and threatened by gamblers: “They got my telephone number and were sending me crazy messages about where I live and my kids and all that stuff. So it is a dangerous game and a fine line that we’re walking [with gambling] for sure. … It brings added pressure. It brings a distraction to the game that can be difficult for players, coaches, referees, everybody that’s involved in it. And I think that we really have to be careful with how close we let it get to the game and the security of the people who are involved in it.” Bickerstaff also says there have been multiple times “where I’m standing up there and we may have a 10-point lead and the spread is 11 and people are yelling at me to leave the guys in so that we can cover the spread, it’s ridiculous. “But again, I understand the business side of it and the nature of the business of it. But I mean, it is something that I believe has gone too far.” (link)

Arizona State President Michael Crow says the Sun Devils are “done with the historical model of athletics being an auxiliary, adjunct enterprise institution where…the athletic department has borrowed money from the University in support of our athletes. We want ASU athletics to be as much a part of the University as any other part of the University – that is, operating the way everything else operates. We’re doing away with a legacy in the design that we think is counterproductive to our success." Crow says ASU’s department will more closely resemble those at Stanford, Vanderbilt and Northwestern, and only after that system is established will the Sun Devils bring in a new AD. “What we're doing is we're changing the financial structure of athletics in the University so that when the new athletic director comes in, the old system won't exist anymore – and we're just about done.” Crow also notes the women’s basketball team loses the most money (roughly $5M) out of any program on campus and remarks: "We have to look at the finances of everything. We're not going to make an immediate assessment. We have to see what’s the solution for…other sports that are emerging. Where we have our most significant issue, relative to the specifics of the issue of sports, is delivering competitiveness at a level that…other fans want to watch. That's really, really important, and then trying to figure out how to pay for it." (link)

NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley takes AthleticDirectorU’s Jason Belzer behind the scenes of the association’s efforts to lobby Congress for support on issues such as NIL transparency and outcomes, the codification of health and wellness standards, the possibility of student-athletes being deemed employees and the creation of a revenue-sharing model for athletics. Buckley explains the NCAA would like to bring “some order to the NIL world by working with Congress on some of the things we just can't do ourselves, like changing state laws. The other thing we'd like to work with Congress on – just about everybody agrees we need some basic rules around competition eligibility. Right now, when some of those rules are put in place, they're challenged. We’re taken to court weekly over some of these things. We can't do anything about that on our own, but by working with Congress, we can empower the association and conferences to set reasonable rules around eligibility and fair competition.” Asked how the NCAA is preparing for the potential of a revenue-sharing model, Buckley cites Project DI and says that concept, in conjunction with some help from Congress, would hopefully provide a way to deliver enhanced benefits to student-athletes without them having to be classified as employees. “We think it’s an important signal that the NCAA put forward…to show that there is a way to do this, there is a way to deliver more benefits to the student-athletes and do it in a way that that keeps intact that opportunity for Divisions III, II and all of I who may not be in a position financially to do the same thing.” Full interview on ADU. Attorneys for the ACC and Florida State were in a Charlotte court this morning to argue two motions before a judge: FSU’s motion to dismiss the ACC’s suit in North Carolina and the ACC’s motion to seal documents related to its deal with ESPN. According to ESPN's David Hale, FSU lawyer says the ACC “jumped offsides, which is a penalty, and shouldn’t get them home field.” Hale also notes that “FSU’s basic argument is that the ACC did not have standing to file its lawsuit in December since they did not have a vote of membership until Jan. That would nullify the ‘first to the courthouse’ advantage the ACC is asserting.” FSU also argues the ACC constitution should require a 2/3 vote by membership before suing a member institution, as the league did before suing Maryland in 2012 and Clemson this week but did not do prior to suing FSU in December. The judge subsequently pointed out that ACC’s initial filing was to enforce the GOR and did not seek monetary damages against FSU until amending the complaint later. Also from Hale: “Judge asks why a Florida court, a state for which just two members reside, decides contracts signed in NC and governed by NC law in the state where the ACC is headquartered. FSU: sovereign immunity, unreasonable restraint of trade, NC contract law similar in Fla. … Judge asks interesting question: Who is the “true plaintiff?” Both are suing each other for mirror opposite judgements. ‘Usually the plaintiff incurred damages and defendant caused. So who is the true plaintiff? Don’t both parties [make that claim]?’” In its arguments, the ACC “came out swinging” with its attorney noting, per Hale: “FSU says they never held a board vote to approve the GoR. ‘Well, why have we been sending them all this money?’” Lots more from Hale. St. Bonaventure AD Joe Manhertz confirms the school did not inform the men’s basketball team of the decision to decline a bid to the NIT. He explains: “Considering the logistics of what would have been an NIT road game, we made the proactive decision Sunday afternoon to inform the NIT selection committee of our concerns regarding roster uncertainty given injury and the transfer portal that would have left us at a competitive disadvantage. Together, athletics department administration and the coaching staff made the decision in the best interest of our student-athletes.” Four student-athletes have entered the transfer portal since the season ended, and Manhertz notes the players communicated their plans to the coaching staff on Sunday. “If they tell us they’re leaving and then we say, ‘Guys, we got one more game so suit up,’ that’s rolling the dice on what kids are going to do. How much are they going to give?” Manhertz goes on to acknowledge that “I think the aspect that I learned the most is to get the [players] in on the decision early, and if there’s something we’re doing, notify the right people. I made decisions that some were good and some were bad. I got to be better next time. Every decision I make is to make sure the student athletes and, as an institution, can get better at being competitive.” (link)

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley talks about his yearly reassignment along with his NBA on TNT team of covering March Madness and says: “The Olympics are the greatest sport I’ve ever been a part of in my life, and this is a close second. It’s amazing. Every year, something happens that you’re like ‘Wow, I’m glad I was a part of watching that.’ And I’ve said, even Republicans and Democrats can’t screw up March Madness. That’s how awesome this product is.” He also compliments the CBS crew: “These guys work so hard. Anybody that claims they know every game going on, they’re full of s***. It’s a lot of moving parts. You kind of glance at every game, but you have to make a lot of your assumptions off the stats, and these guys do such an incredible job with the stats. We can ask them any basketball question and they can have it to us in a couple seconds. … But when you’re trying to sit there and you’ve got four games on at a time and your head is on a swivel, like, ‘Charles, you’re going to talk about this game, Kenny, you’re going to talk about this game, Clark, you’re going to talk about this game. And thank God we’ve got a great research crew. But the first two days of March Madness, man, they are a lot of work. … But man, nothing can screw up March Madness. It’s just incredible.” (link)

The rise in women’s hoops popularity is attributable to more than just Iowa star Caitlin Clark, ESPN VP for Brand Strategy and Content Insights Flora Kelly tells Sportico’s Jacob Feldman, who observes: “Increased TV time has contributed to the growth, and been a result of it. The same holds for structural changes in how fans watch sports today.” According to a Seton Hall poll, four out of the six most recognizable athletes playing in either NCAA Tournament are women. Even taking Clark out of the equation, Similarweb data shows online search volume for high-profile female players jumped 54% from January to February, compared to a 10% jump for top male athletes. Feldman notes that prescient advertisers “have played a key role in boosting women’s sports, seeing the value in those properties and demanding more supply in more appealing time slots. Google worked with ESPN to expand the WNBA’s primetime inventory and SportsCenter coverage. Ally pushed for the NWSL’s championship to be moved into the evening (where viewership jumped 71%). Traditionally advertisers flow to where fans are. This time, they moved to where the fans would be.” The change in how sports are consumed also positions women’s sports for a continued upward trajectory, as Feldman points out: “Sports—with its lifelong fandoms and IRL roots—might be one of the last sectors to be upended by today’s sensation creation industry,” and Kelly adds: “The ability of pop culture to drive audience—I’ve never seen that to the extent that I’ve seen it the last few years. We’re really now—post-pandemic and post-TikTok when sports are on all cylinders—starting to see the impact of social media creating hyper awareness of characters and events for sports.” (link)

Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes weighs in on the College Football Playoff-ESPN deal and says he wasn’t surprised ESPN ended up as the lone rightsholder, especially with major digital media companies such as Apple and Amazon still cautious about entering the market. “The reason why the expectations aren’t getting met is because the economics and ability to monetize these large, tier one properties, it’s just becoming impossible to do it, unless you’re already heavily invested in it. In the case of Fox, would Fox like to have this? I suppose, but at the end of the day they’ve got plenty going on in December and January.” (link)

UTRGV is naming its newly acquired football stadium after longtime benefactors Robert and Janet Vackar in recognition of their history of support from the earliest stages of establishing a football program as well as a new $20M gift. UTRGV President Guy Bailey: "Their visionary contributions, which started just a few months after our university's opening, not only provided financial support but also bestowed instant credibility upon our institution. Their early investments helped put UTRGV on the map and set the stage for our ongoing growth and impact. Their ongoing dedication continues to shape the trajectory of our university." (link)

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams breaks down which athletic departments receive the most in student fee subsidies, and James Madison tops the list with $53.3M coming via student fees in FY23. The Dukes are followed by Old Dominion ($30.3M), Charlotte ($25M), FIU ($23.5M), UCF ($23M), Georgia State ($20.9M), Texas State ($19.4M), Miami (OH) ($17.6M), USF ($17.4M) and Virginia ($16.1M). Novy-Williams notes: “Not only is [JMU’s] $53.3M tops in 2023, it’s also the highest total Sportico has seen in six-plus years of sourcing annual revenue/expense reports for every public athletic department in college football’s top division. It’s bigger than the total 2023 athletics operating budget for more than 40 FBS schools, and almost equal to James Madison’s entire athletics budget the prior year ($57.8M).” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Fischer catches up with Prep Super League Founder/CEO Brian Woods to get a sense of where things stand after Woods initially indicated a target start date of April 2024. Woods says he expects 400 players to participate this year with “no less than 8-10 teams” and notes he may table some markets with hopes of adding them next season. This year, the season will last five weeks instead of six, and Woods says he’s swapped out Phoenix for Las Vegas on the list of markets. Fischer points out that “strategically, a key issue for the PSL is when states will permit high school students to do NIL deals,” without which, participants in states without it would have to choose between high school eligibility and the PSL. Woods expects Florida’s prep NIL legislation to pass this spring, but Texas remains unclear. “We can’t have a national high school league without Texas, just because of the immense talent that comes out of that state.” (link)

Overall, quarterly sales totaled $12.43B, outpacing analysts’ estimate of $12.28B. Nike execs expect sales to decline in the first half of the fiscal year and grow about 1% for the full year. (link)
