Congrats to Penn State, which took home its third straight and 11th national championship under Head Coach Cael Sanderson since 2011. The Nittany Lions claimed four individual championships in Kansas City, bringing the all-time tally to 59, 38 of which have come under Sanderson’s leadership. (link)

Congratulations, as well, to the Virginia Women’s Swimming & Diving team, which defended its national title for a fourth straight year, becoming the third program to ever do so. Head Coach Todd DeSorbo: “I’m not sure I can put it into words. It’s really hard to digest even that we won. I told the girls before the session tonight that there are only nine teams, I think, that have ever won one national championship, and we are one of nine. And when you have 70 teams at a national championship, you know, that’s pretty impressive in and of itself. So it’s just wild. I really can’t put words to it. I’m just really proud of them and happy for them. And this one was a lot of fun.” (link)

Vanderbilt AD Candice Lee joins the Two Percent Podcast to discuss her 20+ years with the Commodores, following in the footsteps of former AD David Williams, the challenges associated with overseeing an athletic department today and lots more, including the university’s decision to change its logo. The change caused some uproar among fans, but Lee explains the decision was made within a larger context – uniting the entire university under one visual identity – which she acknowledges the school could’ve done a better job explaining. “This is important to me as the athletic director that whether it is the athletics version of the V or it’s the V you get when you got your diploma, we’re all the same and we're all worthy of the Vanderbilt brand. And athletics is not separate, athletics is a part of it.” Lee also discusses her leadership style and philosophy on engaging with coaches: “You can be the kind of athletic director that's just not going to really have personal relationships or kind of be at arm's length with your coaches because maybe that makes it a little easier if you need to be objective. Or you’re going to be relationship-oriented, but you’re going to know that when it comes time to do what you think is right for the university, you’ve got to trust yourself to do it.” Lee says she identifies with the latter and adds: “That relationship between AD and head coach is paramount to me, and I spend a lot of time cultivating those relationships because I know their positions are hard, and it's lonely, and if nobody else understands, I want them to know that I do.” Full podcast. Fiesta Bowl Executive Director/CEO Erik Moses sat down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2024 NCAA Convention. Moses shares his thoughts on bowl opt-outs, NIL, the impact of the expanded College Football Playoff on the Fiesta Bowl and more. Moses acknowledges that opt-outs are a big deal and tells Fischer: “Very difficult for us to have any way to weigh in on that process. We’re kind of waiting around for players and coaches and teams to tell us who's going to play and who's not. I think as an enterprise of college football we need to think about ways to curb opt-outs. It’s no different than we talk about load management in the NBA. You’re taking your kid to see his favorite team play, and his favorite player is not going to play because he's doing load management. The fans want to see the players that they've watched all season, and while I understand that players will make individual considerations about their future and playing on the next level, I think the data will show that you're no more likely to be injured in a bowl game than you are in any other game.” Should bowls be allowed to offer NIL deals in the future, Moses isn’t sure how much it will impact opt-outs. “I'm not certain that if a player has decided, ‘I'm going to go high in NFL draft and that's worth $40M in the contract to me,’ what's the number we have to wave in front of them for him to play one more game. And I'm not certain that we can ever get on top of that.” (link)

The NCAA swapped one of the officials at halftime of the Chattanooga vs. NC State women's basketball game on Saturday because of a "background conflict." The NCAA statement on the situation: “There was a switch of game officials at halftime of the Chattanooga-NC State first-round game because it was learned after the game had started that Umpire 2 Tommi Paris had a background conflict that, if known, would prevent her from working that assigned game.” The NCAA asks all officials who are being considered for the NCAA tournament to disclose school affiliations to avoid potential conflicts, but Paris’ master’s degree from Chattanooga was not disclosed. Paris was replaced by Angelica Suffren, who had worked the session’s earlier game in Raleigh, despite Danielle Jackson being listed as the game’s standby official. The decision to use Suffren was made “because it provided the most on-court experience and allowed the game to maintain a full officiating crew, plus standby,” per the NCAA. (link)

LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey has threatened legal action against The Washington Post, saying the paper has spent two years pursuing a “hit piece” about her and gave her an unreasonable deadline this past week to answer questions. Mulkey: “The lengths [Post reporter Kent Babb] has gone to try to put a hit piece together. After two years of trying to get me to sit with him for an interview, he contacts LSU on Tuesday as we were getting ready for the first-round game of this tournament with more than a dozen questions, demanding a response by Thursday, right before we're scheduled to tip off. Are you kidding me? This was a ridiculous deadline that LSU and I could not possibly meet, and the reporter knew it. It was just an attempt to prevent me from commenting and an attempt to distract us from this tournament. It ain't going to work, buddy. … I'm fed up, and I'm not going to let The Washington Post attack this university, this awesome team of young women I have, or me without a fight. I've hired the best defamation law firm in the country, and I will sue The Washington Post if they publish a false story about me. Not many people are in a position to hold these kinds of journalists accountable, but I am, and I'll do it.” More, including Mulkey accusing Babb of tricking her former assistant coaches into speaking with him and former players saying Babb offered to make their comments anonymous if they would say negative things about Mulkey. Prosek Partners Managing Director/Head of Sports Jon Schwartz makes the case for private equity’s involvement in college sports and insists the image of “corporate raiders taking stock of blue-chip programs, replacing athletic directors with their lackeys, paying student-athletes in the non-revenue-generating sports minimum wage, and selling off lacrosse and hockey equipment for quick and easy returns” is not an accurate portrayal of what PE can achieve in the industry. Rather, “these investors can assist universities in developing policies and programs that promote fairness, transparency, and compliance. PE investment represents a potentially transformative force in collegiate athletics—one that offers a strategic and sustainable approach to addressing longstanding questions and embracing emerging opportunities. … By helping the colleges and universities that choose to leave their respective conferences cover those associated costs (as well as funding student-athlete salaries should this become inevitable), these businesses can add a certain steadying professionalism to these efforts, lessening the unintended consequences of NIL and the transfer portal.” Schwartz acknowledges PE firms wouldn’t be doing this as a philanthropic exercise: “There’s real money to be made in this business. The numbers surrounding TV contracts for conference rights are immense, and the potential returns that can be generated from long-term media rights agreements, ticket sales, licensing, and sponsorships are promising. Embracing PE involvement in college sports may feel antithetical to the spirit of the student-athlete. But the current state of play is unsustainable.” (link)

ESPN’s Michael Fletcher examines the epidemic of basketball coaches leaving the coaching box, noting that the problem became so noticeable this season that NCAA National Coordinator of Men’s Basketball Officiating Chris Rastatter issued a memo “strongly reminding them that coaches should not venture out of the coaching box or onto the court for any reason during live play.” Collegiate Basketball Officials Association Executive Director Tom O’Connor tells Fletcher: "When I officiated, I would lean more toward leniency. … I think there are other parts of the game that officials feel like they want to control. As long as we respect the game, I think everybody wants to coexist." Fletcher notes social media has made it easier for coaching box violations to circulate and cites a video of Texas A&M MBB HC Buzz Williams nearly colliding with a Tennessee player as he ventured onto the “middle of the court” to call a timeout. After the game, Vols HC Rick Barnes remarked: “I guess what I will start telling my players is if somebody's on the court just run over them so that way it's an obvious technical foul. But you don't want to do that. I don't want anybody to get hurt. But it just can't happen." Williams was issued a warning but no technical; however, SEC officials reached out to UT after the game to acknowledge the play was handled incorrectly by the referees. With enforcement of the rule likely to be under scrutiny during March Madness, one former official tells Fletcher that “those [officials who ignore it], you don't typically see deep into the tournament." Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart dismisses the idea that coaches are trying to bolt the college ranks and says of former Alabama HC Nick Saban’s retirement: “I think there’s been a lot of media portrayal that [the changing landscape] had something to do [with him retiring]. The man was in his 70s.” Smart adds: “I don’t have a lot of coaches complaining, saying they want to get out of the profession. They enjoy the profession. They want the profession to be about relationships, developing talent and rewarding positive performance, both on and off the field. … There’s certainly higher stakes and higher pay than there’s ever been for college coaches, across the board. I mean the guys making money and making livings that coordinators can retire now, they don’t have to get a head job. You look back even 10 years ago and how much it’s changed for coaches. There’s no crying out there from my end. I want what’s best for the student-athlete.” Smart questions the system currently in place because “it’s not necessarily best for the sophomore, junior or senior. It may be best for the freshman. But it may not be best for the sophomore, junior or senior. I would love to see a little more fair system for the players in terms of within the players.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: When should a coach or administrator hire an agent?
Garry Rosenfield, Coaches Agent for Coaches Inc., discusses his process for valuing coaches contracts and why he believes agents are an asset in terms of representation.
• Football sets the standard for contracts across sports • Women's Volleyball has the biggest potential • Process for valuation varies across schools • Counsel can be necessary beyond negotiating contracts
While many people think agents are only hired for money, jobs, and contracts, Rosenfield believes representation is also necessary for counsel on many of the things required that allow a coach to focus on being a successful coach. 🎧Spotify or Apple Podcasts

St. Bonaventure AD Joe Manhertz has resigned after two and a half years, according to multiple sources. The Bona Venture's Allie Elkins reports the move was due, in part, to the Bonnies' decision to preemptively opt out of the NIT, a decision that SBU did not think would become public as it did during an NIT game earlier this week. Manhertz telling the BV Thursday: “For alumni and fans that the NIT means something to, that’s a dichotomy that I didn’t appreciate. What I learned is that [the NIT] means a lot more to the Bonaventure alumni than it does to the Bonaventure players.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman reports on how Nebraska landed Washington AD Troy Dannen: “In a search that lasted less than one week, interim University of Nebraska system president Chris Kabourek first spoke to Dannen about 96 hours after Trev Alberts exited Nebraska as AD for Texas A&M. Dannen, the athletic director at Washington since October after he spent eight years at Tulane, reached an agreement with Kabourek around 4 a.m. CT on Wednesday.” Kabourek: “I knew Troy was the guy because as we were going through the terms sheet, I said, ‘What do you want your start date to be?’ He said, ‘Today.’ He’s hit the ground running. That’s the Midwestern work ethic that Nebraskans are going to like.” Dannen’s intro presser in Lincoln is set for Tuesday. (link)

Penn State AD Pat Kraft, who has worked closely with both Nebraska AD Troy Dannen and Huskers Football HC Matt Rhule, believes the tandem will work well together. “They’ll be great. They know each other. Troy is very strategic. He understands how to lay out a plan. In this world, you’ve got to know what’s coming around the corner or you’re going to get caught and left behind. I think this is great for Matt and Nebraska football, but it’s also great for all of the Nebraska teams.” Kraft says of Dannen’s abrupt departure from Washington: “It wasn’t a Washington thing. It was a Nebraska thing. It was about Nebraska. It was a great move for his family. That I know was the draw, but I know he struggled. Sometimes timing isn’t always the best, but that’s a perfect fit for him and the family. Troy is really smart. People will see fast, he’s strategic. He understands the shifting landscape.” On his time with Rhule: “I have learned and continue to learn a lot from Matt. I know his relationship with Trev was good, but Matt is cool as a cucumber. (Rhule and Dannen) will get their cadence very quick. I’m just excited for both of them, because I know what Matt needs.” (link)

Thursday’s opening round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament averaged a combined 8.5M viewers per window across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV, per Nielsen fast-nationals — up slightly from last year (8.4M) and the highest opening day average since 2015. The Oakland vs. Kentucky game was the most-watched game of the day with a 3.4 rating and 6.21M viewers on CBS, the largest audience for an opening round game since Duke vs. North Dakota State in 2019 (6.22M) and second-largest under the television format that began in 2011. The full window averaged a combined 10.71M across the four networks, up 5% from last year (10.16M) but down slightly from 2022 (10.81M). On cable, Kansas vs. Samford led the way with an average of 1.61M on TBS, down from last year’s Penn State vs. Texas A&M mark of 1.85M. truTV was up 71% YOY, with 1.2M for Washington State vs. Drake compared to 703K from UCLA vs. UNC Asheville last year. That full window averaged 8.88M, up 4% YOY. (link); Speaking of Oakland, ESPN’s John Gasaway: “Welcome to a pretty wacky round of 32. Since 1985 the average number of remaining teams seeded 11 or lower is 4.7. This year there are seven: Duquesne, NC State, Oregon, James Madison, Grand Canyon, Yale, and Oakland.” (link)

The eight SEC Men’s Basketball programs that made the NCAA Tournament went 3-5 in the second round with notable losses by 3-seed Kentucky (to Oakland), 4-seed Auburn (to Yale) and 6-seed South Carolina (to Oregon). Given SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey’s recent comments concerning March Madness access, USA Today’s Dan Wolken responds: “The SEC, through expansion and its fan base and its financial commitment to win, has stacked the deck in pretty much every sport for 330-plus days a year. But for the three weeks in March and April, they have to prove it on the basketball court like everyone else. Asking for more than that is akin to throwing up a pair of middle fingers at those who have built and sustained this national treasure that always — always — delivers the goods. Hopefully the SEC’s disastrous weekend teaches Sankey a lesson: Stop trying to make this tournament your personal plaything.” (link)

Yale’s aforementioned victory over Auburn is yet another data point in an improving overall hoops profile for the Ivy League as Sportico’s Lev Akabas dives into the numbers: “On the men’s side, the Ivy League was ranked 11th out of 32 Division I conferences in 2024, according to the metric RPI. That’s the league’s second-best ranking in the past 25 years, with its best result occurring in 2019 and its third-best in 2023. [...] The quality of women’s basketball has been even higher, with the conference ranked 7th in RPI this year. After maxing out at 15th between the years of 2002 and 2014, the Ivy League has been one of the top 10 women’s basketball conferences in the country for most of the past decade.” Non-conference scheduling is a notable challenge for both men’s & women’s programs as Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris notes: “[The Duke women] came to Levien Gym to play Columbia in November because [Duke coach] Kara Lawson was coming to help grow the game. The men don’t do that. They just don’t do it.” (link)

Mercer Ad Jim Cole goes with Mississippi State AC/Asst. AD for Women’s Basketball Michelle Clark-Heard as the new WBB leader in Macon. She previously served as HC at Kentucky State (2005-06), Western Kentucky (2014-18) and Cincinnati (2018-23). (link)

Incarnate Word will not have to pay a $2M exit fee to the WAC as Texas Western District Court Judge Fred Biery has ruled in favor of the institution in a lawsuit involving the parties. Here’s why per the San Antonio Express-News’ Greg Luca: “The ruling stated that UIW qualified as a ‘new member institution’ rather than a ‘member institution’ under the WAC bylaws, and the university is therefore not subject to the exit fees assessed to member institutions upon departure. [...] Though Biery noted that the WAC bylaws are ‘not a model of clarity,’ the document repeatedly makes a distinction between ‘new member institutions’ and ‘member institutions.’” (link)

With Bitcoin trading at a new all-time high, SBJ’s Terry Lefton wonders whether to expect another round of sports sponsorship from the industry, and NHL CBO/EVP for Global Partnerships Keith Wachtel says: “We were just discussing that. There are still some regulatory issues and concerns. Of course, we’ll continue to do our due diligence. We don’t see anything yet at the league level we are imminently or proactively pursuing. And it’s not just regulation — it’s how comfortable anyone is with those companies now, even if and when there is further regulation.” Excel Head of Properties Jason Miller says he is expecting a comeback: “A lot of those are funded or at least supported by their Bitcoin wallets, and so with Bitcoin way up, they’ve got full packets again. Certainly, there will be caution from larger properties, but I still expect a fair number of new deals in the space from brands seeking visibility.” Meanwhile, UEFA last week issued an RFP soliciting bids from crypto exchanges for the Champions League, and CAA Sports Co-Head Mike Levine says he’s expecting a relatively active market, especially in the second half of this year: “The story never told was that a lot of these companies with big sponsorships actually made it through multiple crypto winters before this latest run-up. The market should come back relatively quickly, but the 2.0 version of blockchain and sponsorship will be one in which functionality is more central to those brand’s successes; for NFTs, it’ll be utility over collectability.” Lots more from Lefton. Cleveland Cavaliers HC J.B. Bickerstaff reveals that he has been contacted and threatened by gamblers: “They got my telephone number and were sending me crazy messages about where I live and my kids and all that stuff. So it is a dangerous game and a fine line that we’re walking [with gambling] for sure. … It brings added pressure. It brings a distraction to the game that can be difficult for players, coaches, referees, everybody that’s involved in it. And I think that we really have to be careful with how close we let it get to the game and the security of the people who are involved in it.” Bickerstaff also says there have been multiple times “where I’m standing up there and we may have a 10-point lead and the spread is 11 and people are yelling at me to leave the guys in so that we can cover the spread, it’s ridiculous. “But again, I understand the business side of it and the nature of the business of it. But I mean, it is something that I believe has gone too far.” (link)
