Compensation terms for new Washington AD Pat Chun include base pay starting at $1.3M with $100K increases annually through the first five years of the six-year pact. There’s also $75K per year in deferred comp that vets after five years. If Chun were to exit for another gig before the end of June of 2025, he’d owe UW $1.5M, a figure that decreases by $500K twice through June of 2028, then down to $300K for 2028-29 & to $0 in the final year of the deal. New Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich: “We are now in as good of a position as we've ever been in the modern era of college football to be independent. You see all the conference realignment, you see everything that's happened, I think our position as being independent in football quite frankly is certainly more unique than ever, but also more valuable than ever. [...] Our dollar figure that's derived from the CFP for us is quite strong, plus the fact we have the ability to earn additional revenue in the instances where we make the CFP, which puts us in an even stronger position. So when you step back and look at the totality of those three elements -- the NBC relationship, the ACC Network relationship and the CFP -- we're in an incredibly strong position relative to the rest of the college sports world.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the latest NCAA legal challenge, Brantmeier v. NCAA, which was brought forward by North Carolina Women’s Tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier & argues to allow current student-athletes to maximize prize earnings in the face of an industry marked by unregulated NIL deals. McCann’s take: “In the coming weeks, the NCAA will answer the complaint and raise counterarguments. The NCAA will likely contend its rules are reasonable restrictions to oversee college sports. The association could argue tournament prizes are qualitatively different from NIL payments. The former reflects the labor of athletes in arguably professional settings whereas the latter is supposed to reflect the commercial use of an athlete’s identity. [...] Antitrust threats against NCAA rules governing tennis, skiing and other lower-profile college sports (relative to football and basketball) might not seem like grave threats to amateurism. But the reality is quite different. Each case against the NCAA builds on others, and successful cases create favorable precedent for other parties to use against the NCAA.” (link)

More from Jay Bilas’ interview with Athletes.org founder Jim Cavale, as Bilas points out the transfer portal was the NCAA’s own idea. “They chose to do this, but they did it because they were fighting over money in court and losing and they knew how bad the transfer rule made them look. It was basically a non-compete provision in an employment contract for a non-employee. How can you restrict someone's movement when they're an unpaid student to be treated like any other student. They knew that was making them look bad, so they came up with this, then they wound up losing those cases anyway.” Bilas also points out the illogical concept of telling a player “who was recruited as a mid major player out of high school that because you were identified at this level out of high school, you are relegated to that level for your entire career. That’s absurd. And if you prove yourself better, you have to give up a year of your life to sit out because of how you were evaluated in high school. None of that makes any sense, and they know it.” Bilas believes the transfer portal won’t disappear altogether but will be “greatly diminished in importance once players are paid. Once you can sign them to a contract, you'll be able to negotiate” terms agreeable to both parties. (link)

Stanford Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer does not like the change to a two-regional site format, which debuted for the sport last season. “I think personally it would be nice to be spreading this regional out. I think that women's basketball, sometimes we make decisions, making them for two, three and four years out, then we're not in that same place. I think that four teams here would be great.” The NCAA WBB Selection Committee is slated to review the championship format after the 2025 tournament, but NCAA VP for WBB Lynn Holzman wants to expedite that: “That review would include the First Four, first and second rounds and also an evaluation of the two-site regional format. We want to look at the preliminary rounds of the championship, and with the growth we've had the last few years I think we should move up that review to start in 2024.” VanDerveer is in favor, however, of a units program for the women’s side, similar to the men’s one. “I think that'd really show how far women's basketball has come. I'm someone that is in favor of that ... I think we're right there. It's evidenced by the support in this room, the national coverage of women's basketball, the ratings on television.” (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin questions whether the transfer portal is actually good for student-athletes in the long run. He stops short of mentioning Alabama-to-Iowa-to-Alabama student-athlete Kadyn Proctor by name but says: “Maybe it just happened with a high-profile player [who might have decided] 'I'm going to go somewhere in January. I'm going to get their money. I'm going to have never played a down as a transfer, and I'm going to go back in right after spring ball into the portal and go somewhere else and get their money.’ So, I mean, you can say yeah, good for the players, but is it?" Football Scoop’s John Brice cites “multiple personnel sources throughout college football” who say discussions are underway to have players who commit to a program from the portal sign binding paperwork for at least one year, and Kiffin notes: “I brought (having a binding agreement) up in meetings when they first went down this second (portal calendar opening). I’m like, ‘You better make something where they've got to sign for a year’ so all these portal players that after last season go in, at least they’re signed for one year. Not one semester without playing in the offseason. Would that happen in the NFL? Go sign in the offseason, get a contract, get paid and before you ever play go somewhere else. I have these rants on this thing, but because it’s really a (crappy) system. We’re going to utilize it just like the players. I’m not mad at the players, they’re going to utilize it. We’re going to make the best roster that we can, but it’s not good.” (link)

The Tennessean’s Melissa Brown reports that the 10-member Tennessee State University board has been completely replaced. “Gov. Bill Lee signed the legislation into law by Thursday evening, an unusually fast move that comes as TSU actively interviews presidential candidates this week, and appointed eight new members to the board. A faculty appointment and a non-voting student member will round out the board.” There was a $2M external forensic audit that was released yesterday and while it found no instances of fraud or malfeasance, it noted a 250% increase in scholarships at the school between 2019-23 is not sustainable. A statement from the school: “This is unprecedented, unfortunate, and uncharted waters for any public university in the state. We believe this legislation will disrupt our students’ educational pursuits, harm the image of the University, and remove a Board that had achieved success in its enhanced governance of TSU.” (link)

Heitner Legal namesake Darren Heitner: “Expect #NIL collectives to include ‘buyout’ language in agreements and increasingly post a big compensation number that is backloaded and/or partially non-guaranteed (i.e. based on collective unilaterally deciding if/when athlete performs deliverables + only pay when performed).” NBA Agent Daniel Poneman offers some tips for NIL collectives, saying it is possible to sign college athletes to multi year deals with buyouts. Poneman uses the example of giving a three year, fully guaranteed deal that starts at $125K in year one, goes to $150K and then $200K in subsequent years. “Each of these years are essentially player options, because he can always enter the portal. The player’s value is protected, but the school isn’t. To remedy that, add a clause in the NIL collective deal along the lines of “If student athlete transfers to outside of a 15 mile radius of (collective location) they must reimburse the collective for 50% of previous year’s NIL income.” (link)

Fanatics is teaming up with rapper Travis Scott to launch a new line of college sports apparel. The partnership will feature apparel for 28 different schools, including nine in the SEC, seven Big Ten and four HBCUs. Per Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams: “The clothing will be designed and produced by Scott’s Cactus Jack brand and Fanatics-owned Mitchell & Ness. It will be sold on the Fanatics website, at Fanatics-owned Lids locations, via athletic department e-commerce shops run by Fanatics and at on-campus bookstores operated by Barnes & Noble College, with whom Fanatics and Lids have a long-term operational partnership. It’s a double-licensor set-up—Mitchell & Ness has secured licenses with the colleges and Cactus Jack, both of whom will receive a royalty on product sales. This structure is similar to NFL collabs that Mitchell & Ness has done with Rihanna’s Fenty brand or Usher.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand reports on Netflix’s interest in grabbing a piece of the NBA’s media package: “Netflix has expressed interest in a smaller package of games, akin to the new In-Season Tournament or the play-in games that commence the playoffs. (No formal negotiations yet; the exclusive window with current partners Disney and WBD runs through April 22.) Netflix is particularly interested because it can acquire worldwide rights to these contests.” (link)

New Washington AD Pat Chun was at the podium today in Seattle: “This is a unique moment in time for UW and college athletics. As college sports continues to go through dynamic change, Washington and the Big Ten Conference should be leaders, not followers. We will not take a back seat to anyone, and we will ensure that our voices are heard at the highest levels of college athletics.” Interestingly, UW President Ana Mari Cauce reached out to Chun when former AD/current USC boss Jen Cohen left Montlake, but Chun was not interested at the time because of the open AD chair at Ohio State. More Chun: “This was not the Big Ten school we thought maybe we’d be at, but the reality is the Good Lord works in different ways. This is where we’re at, this is where we’re supposed to be, and we’re excited about that opportunity. It happened fast, and I don’t know if this would have happened if it didn’t happen so fast.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers his thoughts on the Washington State AD search: “President Kirk Schulz plans a national search — a commendable goal, for sure. But WSU would be wise to regionalize the process. The school’s uncertain athletic future is the woolly mammoth in the room, a massive complicating factor that assuredly will scare off many otherwise qualified candidates. The Cougars need candidates who are willing to take on the challenge and understand the state of play in Pullman.” Wilner’s candidate pool to fit his regionalized search would include interim AD Anne McCoy, San Diego State AD and former Wazzu Assoc AD John David Wicker (although Wilner is “deeply skeptical of Wicker’s interest,” asserting “there is zero difference between the ‘Pac-2’ schools and a top-tier Mountain West athletic program”), Western Michigan AD and former Oregon State Deputy AD Dan Bartholomae, Toledo AD and former Wazzu Deputy AD Bryan Blair, Montana AD Kent Haslam, Northern Arizona AD and Wazzu alum/former Deputy AD Mike Marlow, and Texas A&M Deputy AD and former Wazzu Deputy AD Chris Park. The NCAA and Power 5 leagues could face over $939M in damages from the Hubbard case that seeks repayment of Alston payments dating back to 2019-20, with the class-action suit penalty to triple the $313M estimated for that period. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Steve Gardner noting: “The NCAA is arguing that the Hubbard case should not be granted class-action status because the ‘highly varied and diverse ways in which ... schools implemented Alston awards present inherently individualized issues.’ It draws a distinction between those and the class-wide damages that are mostly uniform and can be determined in a manageable way. Added to possible damages from another pending case, the NCAA and its largest conferences could be on the hook for a total of $5.1 billion. The Hubbard case and the other pending case are proceeding in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California’s Oakland Division. That's the same venue through which other antitrust suits against the NCAA related to college-athlete compensation have proceeded over the past 14 years.” (link)

As UConn gets set to tip in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s Sweet 16 tonight against San Diego State, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says her league’s media negotiations “are in a very active stage.” In comparison to surging Power 4 budgets, Ackerman adds:, “We expect there’s going to be a growing revenue gap between the conferences we consider peers in basketball and us, because of the football money. That challenge is real for our schools.” More from Ackerman, this time on potential Big East expansion: “At least for now, we think we're in the right place.” (link)

Clemson & North Carolina are also on tap this evening in the Sweet 16, followed by Duke & NC State tomorrow. On the ACC’s March Madness success, USA Today’s Jordan Mendoza writes: “Only five ACC teams made the tournament this season, tying last season for the fewest teams sent in the past decade. Virginia was among the last four teams to make the tournament and had to play a First Four game, which it lost in resounding fashion to Colorado State. So the conference only had four teams in the first round for the first time since 2013. But it's been perfection for the ACC since.” Clemson HC Brad Brownell on the potential changes to the conference slate: “I’ve been a head coach for 22 years. I know when I’m playing against good teams, well-coached teams. And so I’m not surprised in the least that our teams are doing so well. […] I’ve been outspoken about disagreeing with some of the metrics and how the way teams are judged. I don’t know the best way to do it. I don’t have the answers. But I know … you’ve got to hold up the banner of your league a little bit.” (link, link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock chats with The Roanoke Times’ Mark Berman about the Women’s Basketball program and HC Kenny Brooks’ exit for Kentucky. “Our resources were good enough to get to the Final Four and be one quarter away from playing for a national championship. If all it was [was about the] budget, then Ohio State and Texas would be in that thing every year. Having said that, … I guess Kentucky’s budget may be $30- or $40-million more than ours. Yeah, they can push some more into it. I don’t think it’s an automatic path to the Final Four or maybe Kentucky would’ve been there previously on the women’s side. But it does make things easier. And if Kenny was looking for a challenge at the highest level and you can have those resources, certainly it helps. […] He certainly knows we could do more, and he certainly knows we have limitations.” On NIL: “We have been very successful through corporations and donations and fans with NIL for women’s basketball. Even Kenny remarked at how impressive it was and how much of a great opportunity it gave us.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes says she’s focused on designing “ways to generate revenue for the department more holistically” in coordination with the National Alumni Association. At this summer’s National Alumni Association Convention, Sykes noted a key goal: “...we hope to be one of the outcomes…to present the necessary needs for athletics and the true cost of operating.” Sykes also points to the need for fundraising for women’s programs: “We always have a lot of energy and support for our men’s sports. But sometimes, [women athletes] get overlooked. They practice the same number of hours, are on the road, and compete as much as their male counterparts. So, I appreciate that you found it appropriate and think of them as deserving enough for you all to rally around and create a specific program to support and recognize everything they need.” (link)

The Kentucky-focused The 15 Club has launched 500 Strong, which is aiming to generate $4.5M to $7.5M in NIL funding for football in Lexington. Here are the details from On3’s Pete Nakos: “To gain membership, boosters will make a three-year commitment with an annual fee of $15,000 for admission to at least three exclusive events throughout the year. The 500 Strong club announced its inaugural event Thursday, featuring Grammy-winning artist John Legend.” (link)

The Athletic’s Austin Meek pens on the trend of hiring NIL GMs, with Michigan set to be the latest to hire for this role through its partnership with Altius Sports Partners and a $255K salary allocation. Hail! Impact collective Founder Chin Weerappuli on the impact that could have: “We want Michigan to be on the cutting edge of NIL and know what others are doing and continue to push the envelope. Altius is going to, from what I’ve heard, really assist with that.” Arizona State NIL GM Rachael Bacchus, who is a lawyer by trade, on the fallout from NIL changes: “Programs that have opened the doors and allowed these (GM) roles, it allows them to be nimble, because we’re prepared. That’s what this job is, to make sure our counterparts at the programs we’re serving know, ‘This is coming.’ […] We’re providing that guidance, hands on, real time. Other programs that don’t have that national landscape view? God bless them, honestly. I can’t imagine.” (link)

Jordan Bender of JMP weighs in on what a college prop bet ban could mean: “We believe nearly $200M of gaming revenue could be at risk based on 2023 revenue. At the end of the day, bettors will find a way to wager on events and players, and we believe the effort to ban individual player betting will likely only push players back offshore, while we estimate over 50% of wagers today are in the United States.” (link)
