Minot State VP of Student Affairs and Athletics Kevin Harmon chats with KXNET about his new role, noting: “What has occurred over the last 90 days has been difficult, and there are some question marks, and the only way that we can move forward from that is a dialogue between the university and our stakeholders, community members being present, answering questions. NCAA Legal Matters:

+ The NCAA and Power 5 leagues could face over $939M in damages from the Hubbard case that seeks repayment of Alston payments dating back to 2019-20, with the class-action suit penalty to triple the $313M estimated for that period. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Steve Gardner noting: “The NCAA is arguing that the Hubbard case should not be granted class-action status because the ‘highly varied and diverse ways in which ... schools implemented Alston awards present inherently individualized issues.’ It draws a distinction between those and the class-wide damages that are mostly uniform and can be determined in a manageable way. Added to possible damages from another pending case, the NCAA and its largest conferences could be on the hook for a total of $5.1 billion. The Hubbard case and the other pending case are proceeding in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California’s Oakland Division. That's the same venue through which other antitrust suits against the NCAA related to college-athlete compensation have proceeded over the past 14 years.” (link)

+ Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the latest NCAA legal challenge, Brantmeier v. NCAA, which was brought forward by North Carolina (DI) Women’s Tennis student-athlete Reese Brantmeier & argues to allow current student-athletes to maximize prize earnings in the face of an industry marked by unregulated NIL deals. McCann’s take: “In the coming weeks, the NCAA will answer the complaint and raise counterarguments. The NCAA will likely contend its rules are reasonable restrictions to oversee college sports. The association could argue tournament prizes are qualitatively different from NIL payments. The former reflects the labor of athletes in arguably professional settings whereas the latter is supposed to reflect the commercial use of an athlete’s identity.  [...] Antitrust threats against NCAA rules governing tennis, skiing and other lower-profile college sports (relative to football and basketball) might not seem like grave threats to amateurism. But the reality is quite different. Each case against the NCAA builds on others, and successful cases create favorable precedent for other parties to use against the NCAA.” (link)

Facilities & Fundraising:

+ Wayne State (NE)’s $30M facility project is underway and will upgrade Rice Auditorium and its recreation center, while adding two new spaces. Work on the Wildcats’ facilities are set to be complete in January 2025. (link) 

+ Texas Woman’s has received a gift from the TWU System Board of Regents to establish the Ellen Amirkhan Athletics Program Endowment. (link)

Following a five-year hiatus, Wheeling announces the return of Women’s Lacrosse as a varsity sport with competition slated to begin with the 2025 season. (link) 

Gannon’s Men’s Basketball turnaround from 3-23 to 32-3 capped off the largest improvement in NCAA basketball history, far outpacing the previous record 18.5 games. (link)

The NCAA and USOPC have partnered to release a second video highlighting the connection between college sports and the U.S. Olympic team. The 30-second spot is set to run during March Madness and future NCAA championship broadcasts. USOPC Chief of Sport and Athlete Services Rocky Harris: “Team USA will feature more than 850 athletes representing over 50 sports in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris this summer, and the majority of these athletes will also be proudly representing their colleges back home. March Madness and the upcoming NCAA championship season provide the perfect stage to honor Team USA's collegiate ties, which are essential to growing and keeping sport strong in our country." (link)

After 33 years of service in various capacities to the university, Albany State Women’s Basketball HC Robert Skinner is transitioning into a role focusing on university-wide wellness initiatives while also serving as Assoc. AD for Facilities, Operations and Community Engagement. President Marion Ross Fedrick: "Coach Skinner's impact on Albany State University cannot be overstated. His passion for the success of our student-athletes and his dedication to the university's mission have been evident throughout his career. Emporia State hires long-time Augustana Men’s Basketball HC Tom Billeter in the same capacity. AD David Spafford: "Hornet basketball has had very good success in the past few years which led to a tremendous pool of highly qualified candidates from all levels of basketball.
