Dakota State AD Jeff Dittman will retire, effective Tuesday, after a dozen years leading the Trojans. President José-Marie Griffiths: “Jeff has had a distinctive impact on athletics at Dakota State, both as a coach and as athletics director. We have seen growth in the number of student athletes, the number of programs offered, and major upgrades to the facility.” Volleyball HC Amy Veenhof and Cross Country/Track HC Anthony Drealan will split Interim AD duties while a search is conducted. Dordt secured the program’s first Women’s Basketball National Championship by topping Providence on Tuesday night, 57-53. (link); On the men’s side, Freed-Hardeman earned the program’s initial Red Banner by rallying past Langston to win the Men’s Basketball National Championship, 71-67. (link)

Andscape's Mia Berry profiles the success Langston and Men’s Basketball HC Chris Wright have had in two years, as the Lions reached their first championship game in program history. AD Donnita Drain-Rogers says Wright differentiated himself in the interview process by selling a vision of winning immediately, not a multi-year build. “He’s got great players, but Coach Wright is just phenomenal with building a culture, and it has been amazing to sit there as athletic director and just see how he’s created this masterpiece in two years. The support has grown for the men’s basketball [team], [and we’re] getting good [attendance] numbers for regular-season games. Our fans are traveling well. We have a lot of people that believed in them.” Wright: “Our players take a lot of pride in being able to represent HBCUs across the country on the stage and this platform,” Wright said. “It’s extremely hard I think for anybody to get here, but when you’re at an HBCU, it really is an uphill battle. … It’s really cool to see the respect that we’ve gotten from so many people across the country.” (link)
