New Washington AD Pat Chun was at the podium today in Seattle: “This is a unique moment in time for UW and college athletics. As college sports continues to go through dynamic change, Washington and the Big Ten Conference should be leaders, not followers. We will not take a back seat to anyone, and we will ensure that our voices are heard at the highest levels of college athletics.” Interestingly, UW President Ana Mari Cauce reached out to Chun when former AD/current USC boss Jen Cohen left Montlake, but Chun was not interested at the time because of the open AD chair at Ohio State. More Chun: “This was not the Big Ten school we thought maybe we’d be at, but the reality is the Good Lord works in different ways. This is where we’re at, this is where we’re supposed to be, and we’re excited about that opportunity. It happened fast, and I don’t know if this would have happened if it didn’t happen so fast.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers his thoughts on the Washington State AD search: “President Kirk Schulz plans a national search — a commendable goal, for sure. But WSU would be wise to regionalize the process. The school’s uncertain athletic future is the woolly mammoth in the room, a massive complicating factor that assuredly will scare off many otherwise qualified candidates. The Cougars need candidates who are willing to take on the challenge and understand the state of play in Pullman.” Wilner’s candidate pool to fit his regionalized search would include interim AD Anne McCoy, San Diego State AD and former Wazzu Assoc AD John David Wicker (although Wilner is “deeply skeptical of Wicker’s interest,” asserting “there is zero difference between the ‘Pac-2’ schools and a top-tier Mountain West athletic program”), Western Michigan AD and former Oregon State Deputy AD Dan Bartholomae, Toledo AD and former Wazzu Deputy AD Bryan Blair, Montana AD Kent Haslam, Northern Arizona AD and Wazzu alum/former Deputy AD Mike Marlow, and Texas A&M Deputy AD and former Wazzu Deputy AD Chris Park. The NCAA and Power 5 leagues could face over $939M in damages from the Hubbard case that seeks repayment of Alston payments dating back to 2019-20, with the class-action suit penalty to triple the $313M estimated for that period. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Steve Gardner noting: “The NCAA is arguing that the Hubbard case should not be granted class-action status because the ‘highly varied and diverse ways in which ... schools implemented Alston awards present inherently individualized issues.’ It draws a distinction between those and the class-wide damages that are mostly uniform and can be determined in a manageable way. Added to possible damages from another pending case, the NCAA and its largest conferences could be on the hook for a total of $5.1 billion. The Hubbard case and the other pending case are proceeding in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California’s Oakland Division. That's the same venue through which other antitrust suits against the NCAA related to college-athlete compensation have proceeded over the past 14 years.” (link)

As UConn gets set to tip in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s Sweet 16 tonight against San Diego State, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman says her league’s media negotiations “are in a very active stage.” In comparison to surging Power 4 budgets, Ackerman adds:, “We expect there’s going to be a growing revenue gap between the conferences we consider peers in basketball and us, because of the football money. That challenge is real for our schools.” More from Ackerman, this time on potential Big East expansion: “At least for now, we think we're in the right place.” (link)

Clemson & North Carolina are also on tap this evening in the Sweet 16, followed by Duke & NC State tomorrow. On the ACC’s March Madness success, USA Today’s Jordan Mendoza writes: “Only five ACC teams made the tournament this season, tying last season for the fewest teams sent in the past decade. Virginia was among the last four teams to make the tournament and had to play a First Four game, which it lost in resounding fashion to Colorado State. So the conference only had four teams in the first round for the first time since 2013. But it's been perfection for the ACC since.” Clemson HC Brad Brownell on the potential changes to the conference slate: “I’ve been a head coach for 22 years. I know when I’m playing against good teams, well-coached teams. And so I’m not surprised in the least that our teams are doing so well. […] I’ve been outspoken about disagreeing with some of the metrics and how the way teams are judged. I don’t know the best way to do it. I don’t have the answers. But I know … you’ve got to hold up the banner of your league a little bit.” (link, link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock chats with The Roanoke Times’ Mark Berman about the Women’s Basketball program and HC Kenny Brooks’ exit for Kentucky. “Our resources were good enough to get to the Final Four and be one quarter away from playing for a national championship. If all it was [was about the] budget, then Ohio State and Texas would be in that thing every year. Having said that, … I guess Kentucky’s budget may be $30- or $40-million more than ours. Yeah, they can push some more into it. I don’t think it’s an automatic path to the Final Four or maybe Kentucky would’ve been there previously on the women’s side. But it does make things easier. And if Kenny was looking for a challenge at the highest level and you can have those resources, certainly it helps. […] He certainly knows we could do more, and he certainly knows we have limitations.” On NIL: “We have been very successful through corporations and donations and fans with NIL for women’s basketball. Even Kenny remarked at how impressive it was and how much of a great opportunity it gave us.” (link)

Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes says she’s focused on designing “ways to generate revenue for the department more holistically” in coordination with the National Alumni Association. At this summer’s National Alumni Association Convention, Sykes noted a key goal: “...we hope to be one of the outcomes…to present the necessary needs for athletics and the true cost of operating.” Sykes also points to the need for fundraising for women’s programs: “We always have a lot of energy and support for our men’s sports. But sometimes, [women athletes] get overlooked. They practice the same number of hours, are on the road, and compete as much as their male counterparts. So, I appreciate that you found it appropriate and think of them as deserving enough for you all to rally around and create a specific program to support and recognize everything they need.” (link)

The Kentucky-focused The 15 Club has launched 500 Strong, which is aiming to generate $4.5M to $7.5M in NIL funding for football in Lexington. Here are the details from On3’s Pete Nakos: “To gain membership, boosters will make a three-year commitment with an annual fee of $15,000 for admission to at least three exclusive events throughout the year. The 500 Strong club announced its inaugural event Thursday, featuring Grammy-winning artist John Legend.” (link)

Meanwhile, the Florida State affiliated Battle’s End NIL collective is set to offer Noles fans an opportunity to “purchase Doak Campbell Stadium bricks, seats, signs and bleachers” with a portion going to NIL efforts. Doak Campbell is undergoing sizable renovations with Battle’s End CEO Ingram Smith noting: “This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of FSU football’s rich history while also making an investment in its bright future.” CollectibleXChange will handle the processing. The Athletic’s Austin Meek pens on the trend of hiring NIL GMs, with Michigan set to be the latest to hire for this role through its partnership with Altius Sports Partners and a $255K salary allocation. Hail! Impact collective Founder Chin Weerappuli on the impact that could have: “We want Michigan to be on the cutting edge of NIL and know what others are doing and continue to push the envelope. Altius is going to, from what I’ve heard, really assist with that.” Arizona State NIL GM Rachael Bacchus, who is a lawyer by trade, on the fallout from NIL changes: “Programs that have opened the doors and allowed these (GM) roles, it allows them to be nimble, because we’re prepared. That’s what this job is, to make sure our counterparts at the programs we’re serving know, ‘This is coming.’ […] We’re providing that guidance, hands on, real time. Other programs that don’t have that national landscape view? God bless them, honestly. I can’t imagine.” (link)

Jordan Bender of JMP weighs in on what a college prop bet ban could mean: “We believe nearly $200M of gaming revenue could be at risk based on 2023 revenue. At the end of the day, bettors will find a way to wager on events and players, and we believe the effort to ban individual player betting will likely only push players back offshore, while we estimate over 50% of wagers today are in the United States.” (link)

Warchant’s Ira Schoffel: “While Florida State and ACC officials wait for a North Carolina judge to rule on whether their case should proceed there, FSU’s attorneys on Wednesday filed a new response in Leon County Circuit Court accusing the conference of several ‘misrepresentations’ to the court and also making it plainly clear that the Seminoles are planning to leave the league. In three different paragraphs in the 10-page filing, which was obtained by Warchant late Wednesday, the attorneys use a version of the phrase, ‘after FSU exits the ACC,’ as if it is a foregone conclusion. In the Seminoles’ original complaint and amended complaint, both filed in recent months, that language was not used.” FSU’s response cites several examples where it states the conference has been “loose” with the facts, including when Virginia President Jim Ryan explained why the league filed its preemptive lawsuit before FSU filed its own, with the legal team pointing out Ryan’s “legerdemain” citing of “commercially reasonable efforts.” Florida State also accuses the ACC of fudging the truth when arguing the right of Commissioner Jim Phillips to unilaterally grant ESPN four additional years. The most substantial misrepresentation concerns whether the ESPN Agreements reach the disputed property (in this case, the TV rights for FSU home football games) at all. Attorneys for the ‘Noles: “Five words explain why the Motion should be denied: to get to the truth.” Lots more. (link)

New Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua joins the Irish Illustrated Insider podcast to discuss his desire to lead the Fighting Irish, the importance of being “progressive and aggressive” while still honoring what makes Notre Dame Notre Dame, the current landscape and more. Bevacqua explains it was former AD Jack Swarbrick who first planted the seed of Bevacqua potentially succeeding him. “I’m not going to sit here and say the thought never crossed my mind because it's actually always crossed my mind.” Talks with Swarbrick and President John Jenkins became more serious the closer the time came for Swarbrick to announce he was stepping down, and Bevacqua says: “I wish I could say I went home and took out a legal pad and kind of did the column of the positives and a column of the negatives, but I didn't. I mean, I knew in my heart immediately that this was something I wanted to do, something that I had to do. … It’s not as though I was thinking I wanted to be an athletic director anywhere else. That is not the case. This was the one athletic director role that I would ever have been interested in.” As far as capital projects go, Bevacqua says a new football facility is a priority but notes: “[We’re] not at the point where I can talk about the definitive timelines, but it's a priority I feel really good and confident about the fact that that will get there and hopefully get there in short order.” On balancing donor funding for facilities upgrades and NIL, Bevacqua says the main selling point will continue to be balance of athletic and academic success the school can offer, “and, sure, facilities are great, facilities are important, and we have to have some of the best facilities in the country. But our real selling point…is everything else you get here.” Full podcast. (link)

Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs joins The Knight Report podcast to discuss NIL, the facilities master plan, where things stand with a new Adidas deal and more. Hobbs says his colleagues in the department know there’s “not a day where I wake up and I'm not thinking about NIL and how do we do that for our student-athletes. In our conversations with our sponsors we're always mentioning that we love the sponsorship, we love the support of Rutgers, but there's also things that you can do with our student-athletes.” Hobbs mentions an event at a local ShopRite featuring women’s basketball student-athlete Destiny Adams and men’s basketball student-athlete Jeremiah Williams and says: “That’s something that I had pitched to the folks at ShopRite when we tried to work our deal together. … So I've been pretty intentional behind the scenes in trying to make and promote our student-athletes and the value that they can have.” As the landscape continues to change Hobbs says he’s looking for a set of rules and establishing balance to preserve what makes college sports special. “I don’t want to end up in a situation where folks are screaming down at our athletes on the field because of some, in their view, poor performance and they're thinking, ‘Well, we're paying them. … They’re not Eli Manning. When Eli Manning played for the Giants, yell at him all you want because he was making however much he was making a year.” Hobbs posits that “with Caitlin Clark out there on the court, they don't see her as an employee of Iowa, they see her as a really talented young woman who is inspiring a lot of young women to get into sports…and that's what's really special to me about college.” Hobbs also confirms Rutgers has extended its partnership with Adidas and the contract is being finalized. Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart and Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari sat down for a joint interview with BBN Tonight’s Keith Farmer to discuss their relationship and the state of the program. Barnhart insists there’s some “misinformation” about their working relationship: “I say this jokingly, but seriously: he’s been married 40+ years and I’ve been married 40+ years. We know how to manage relationships, and I think we’ve been together for 15 years, so we’re sort of like semi-married. … This notion that we have no relationship and stuff like that is garbage. The way we’ve gotten through 15 years – it’s been pretty good. We’ve had our highs and lows, and we’ve had some things that haven’t gone exactly the way we wanted to, but by and large, I’m sitting next to a guy that I brought here 15 years ago and we’ve been together just fine.” Barnhart went on to explain that “I’m not a guy that gets in any of my coaches’ business, and they’ll all tell you that. We let them do their work and try to stay out of their way. Do I wish I could be around more? Yeah, and I’ll work at that. That’s on me. But at the end of the day, I trust him to do his job and we always want to make adjustments to get better. Let’s put the notion of no relationship out the door.” Calipari added: “There are so many things out there that aren’t accurate. You can’t defend all the stuff. You just have to let it go and hopefully people (use) logic, look at it and say, ‘Look, they’ve done a lot of good together.’ And like you said, there’s been some really high highs, and there have been some low lows, but that’s part of athletics.” (link)

Howard AD Kery Davis talks with the Washington Informer’s Ed Hill about his time leading the Bison and the importance of sitting in the AD chair. “When I left HBO after 17 years, I thought long and hard whether my obituary would reflect my time there as my contribution. However, once I got to Howard, that all changed. I felt that I was on the shoulders of those who came before me.” Davis acknowledges there were some challenges when he walked in the door and tells Hill: “I think the blueprint for our success started with the women’s volleyball team. My first year, the team played at Penn State in the NCAAs and we were outclassed. They came back the next year and went to Wisconsin for the tournament. Then the third year, they went to Penn State again and were more competitive this time. I was convinced after talking to the volleyball coach, Coach (Shaun) Kupferberg, that if we could put some resources into the program, we could have something. … You have to have belief in a mission and follow it through.” Looking toward the future, Davis believes that “we have a great opportunity as a program for growth. We have a good team and staff, and we will continue to make Howard University a formidable force in athletics.” (link)

ESPN men’s college hoops analyst Jay Bilas covers several topics on the inaugural episode of Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale’s Now It’s Legal podcast, including the potential for student-athletes to become employees. Bilas posits that the big changes coming will be stabilizing, but “what I hear are administrators complaining because they know what’s going to happen. The athletes are going to get their fair share because they deserve it, and that's the efficient place to put money – is talent on the floor. And a lot of these needless sort of government-type jobs on college campuses are going to go away. You’re not going to see 20 athletic directors at a school that are like bank vice presidents. … They're going to put the money where it's most efficient, and that scares some people.” Bilas also notes collective bargaining can be problematic for public v. private institutions, telling Cavale: “It can be done, but I don’t think it’s necessary. There’s no collective bargaining for athletic directors or coaches or presidents. And most people don't pay attention to this and I don't blame them, but if they're worried about poaching, what about poaching of coaches? Coaches are under contract and other competitors are trying to take them away through backchannel negotiations to leave a job. It happens with presidents, it happens with athletic directors all the time. Trev Alberts went from Nebraska just like weeks after signing a new contract and went to Texas A&M, and nobody claims tampering or poaching. And it's no different than with the player.” Bilas goes on to wonder how an unpaid student-athlete can be tampered with in the first place. “You can't. That student can get up and leave whenever he or she chooses – and people don't know this either: athletes transfer at a much lower rate than non-athlete students do.” (link)

Clemson Men’s Basketball HC Brad Brownell supports NCAA President Charlie Baker’s call for state legislatures to prohibit prop bets on college games. “People are extremely aggressive these days. We get phone calls in our office sometimes. When things, obviously, don't go a bettor's way, we get some nasty calls.” Brownell hasn’t seen any of his players experience harassment from sports bettors but says he wouldn't be shocked if it happens on social media. “It's a really unique time with everything going on in college athletics, and now the gambling piece is a whole other log on the fire.” (link)
|
Speaking of social media harassment, North Carolina Men’s Basketball student-athlete Armando Bacot says he has experienced plenty of it at the hands of angry bettors. “It's terrible. Even at the last game, I guess I didn't get enough rebounds or something. I thought I played pretty good last game, but I looked at my DMs, and I got, like, over 100 messages from people telling me I sucked and stuff like that because I didn't get enough rebounds. I think it's definitely a little out of hand. But at the same time too, I get the point of it. Like, if you bet a lot of money on something, and you're, like, one pick away and somebody messes it up, I understand the part of fans being mad. But it's annoying, too, at times.” (link)
