Congratulations to Arizona State for claiming the school’s first NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship. Head Coach Bob Bowman: “I'm so incredibly grateful for all of the people who just believed when there was nothing to believe in. For me telling them one day we could do it, a lot of mistakes made, a lot of good times, a lot of sad times and frustration. Through it all, everybody just kept on growing, the program kept on growing.” (link)

The highly anticipated story on LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey by the Washington Post’s Kent Babb finally hit newsstands yesterday before the Tigers faced (and defeated) UCLA in the Sweet 16. It’s a super long recounting of Mulkey’s professional path, personal relationships both on & off the court, overall providing some insight on what makes her tick. (link)
|
Mulkey responded to questions about the article after the Tigers’ win in Albany, said of the timing of its release: “Imagine that. Must have thought y'all would look at it, get some clicks or be a distraction. No, ma'am, I haven't read it and I probably won't read it. I probably will have my attorneys communicate with me to see if there's anything in there that we need to be concerned about.” Mulkey talked more about a LA Times article by Ben Bolch from Friday that described her team as “dirty debutants.” Mulkey: “You can criticize coaches all you want. That's our business. You can come at us and say you're the worst coach in America. I hate you, I hate everything about you. We expect that. It comes with the territory. But the one thing I'm not going to let you do, I'm not going to let you attack young people, and there were some things in this commentary, guys, that you should be offended by as women. It was so sexist, and they don't even know it. It was good versus evil in that game today. Evil? Called us dirty debutants? Take your phone out right now and Google dirty debutants and tell me what it says. Dirty debutants? Are you kidding me? I'm not going to let you talk about 18 to 21 year old kids in that tone. It was even sexist for this reporter to say UCLA was milk and cookies. Now, you women sit there and you keep your mouths shut if you want. I'm in the last third of my career, but I'm not going to let sexism continue. And if you don't think that's sexism, then you're in denial. How dare people attack kids like that. You don't have to like the way we play. You don't have to like the way we trash talk. You don't have to like any of that. We're good with that. But I can't sit up here as a mother and a grandmother and a leader of young people and allow somebody to say that.” (link - Mulkey’s comments, link - LA Times article)
|
UCLA Women’s Basketball HC Cori Close apologized for retweeting the LA Times article in question: “I made a huge mistake in reposting without reading it first, and I am very sorry for that. I would never want to promote anything that tears down a group of people in our great game. I do not condone racism, sexism or inflammatory comments aimed at individuals in our community. I hope that I have proven over time with my behaviors and choices this was an isolated mistake and not the intention of my heart. My sincerest apologies for anything that communicated otherwise.” (link)

Baylor Women’s Basketball HC Nicki Collen got in on the action after Babb said the program in Waco had “withered” since Mulkey’s departure: “I'm not afraid to say I was really offended by the article that came out. I didn't read any of it. Don't know what happened, but nothing's withering in Waco. Nothing is withering in Waco... We are not not a first tier team and you can't say we are. You can't get to the Sweet 16 and take a #1 seed down to the wire in a one possession game and say anything is withering in Waco... There's some stuff blooming in Waco. If he wants to come do an article and come to Waco and write about it next year, he's welcome.” (link)

USA Today headliner Nancy Armour argues Mulkey is “subjected to a harsh lens that no male coach is.” Here’s her thesis: “There are plenty of male coaches with documented records of doing terrible things or being unlikable people who have not been put under the microscope like Mulkey has. [...] Plenty of other coaches appear to be having rage strokes on the sidelines. Have blistered their players publicly. For them, it’s dismissed as ‘passion’ or praised as ‘tough coaching.’ Nothing to see here or look at further. Yet it’s somehow fair game to detail the coach’s decades-long estrangement from her father, presenting as a sympathetic figure a man who devastated his daughter by cheating on her mother and walking out on his family, suggesting instead that it’s Mulkey who is the heartless one. [...] Without evidence of any wrongdoing, a disagreeable personality has been deemed an unforgivable sin. It’s now a given she’s homophobic. A COVID denier. A MAGA devotee. Her players a discredit to the game. None of us know if any of that is true, though. But minds were made up long ago about Mulkey, facts and fairness be damned.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner does the math on how much Washington State and Oregon State will have leftover to rebuild the conference, breaking it down into four primary revenue buckets: $65M remains after $6.5M is withheld from conference distributions to the 10 departing schools; $6M in College Football Playoff payments per school for two years totals $24M; $50M for two years from Rose Bowl revenue is $100M; and NCAA Tournament revenue amounts to 50 units at $350K each in the spring of 2025 is $17.5M, and 43 units at $360K each in the spring of 2026 is $15.5M — for a two-year total of $33M. Wilner: “The grand total during the critical 24-month window: roughly $222 million. It guarantees them nothing, except a fighting chance.” (link)

While Pepperdine’s Men’s Basketball team has not made it to the NCAA Tournament in more than two decades, the school continues to play host for the tournament’s West Regional at Crypto.com Arena. This is the fifth time in the last 12 years the Waves athletic department staff has hosted the event. The NCAA honorarium was $400K back in 2008 when Pepperdine first hosted, with AD Steve Potts quipping: “We thought, gosh, this is the biggest fundraiser we will have all year.” Despite the fact that the sum is now $200K for those hosting not at their own venue, “for a school (Pepperdine’s) size, that is a good number,” per former Waves Deputy AD/SWA Karina Herold. Pepperdine has put in its bid for the 2027 and 2028 editions, applications for which were due in February. Potts: “People in Indianapolis may not want to admit it [publicly] but they will admit to us that ours is the best run regional in the country.” (link)

West Virginia was one of the many Power 5 programs to hire a midmajor men’s basketball head coach to fill its own vacancy during this coaching cycle. Mountaineers AD Wren Baker sheds some light on why that trend was the popular choice this year: “There’s always a risk when you hire a (Power Five level) assistant. The job has become so much harder and so much more complex today with the transfer portal and NIL. There’s probably more weight given to the people who have actually managed the portal and NIL, right? If you’re an assistant, you don’t really know (as an athletic director making a hire) how much they actually managed those. That’s probably part of it. … There are times when you’re willing to take that risk. But there are times when you feel like when your program needs someone a little more experienced.” Further, new WVU MBB HC Darian Devries’ salary will average $3.05M if he qualifies for the one-year extension, compared to former HC Bob Huggins average of $4.15M and Baker notes: “I want our coach to feel secure. But I don’t want that security to be so much that it puts us in a (bad) place, especially moving into the future. When there is a revenue share with student-athletes, and it’s going to happen, there’s going to be increased benefits for student-athletes. I didn’t want to put us in a place where we’re not prepared to do that.” (link)

Baseball America reports that with nine former student-athletes on Opening Day MLB rosters, Louisville leads all colleges on that front. Arizona State, Florida and Vanderbilt each have eight active players; Arkansas, Mississippi State and Texas A&M have seven; Arizona, Cal State Fullerton, LSU, Oregon and Virginia have six; and Florida State, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Ole Miss have five each. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich examines the online subculture of Big East fans, noting that following the release of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bracket “hundreds of anonymous accounts, fan blogs, and full-time s***posters, as they’re vulgarly known on social media, started a chain reaction against the committee for awarding bids to only three Big East teams.” They echoed the sentiments of Providence HC Kim English, St. John’s HC Rick Pitino and Seton Hall HC Shaheen Holloway, and Christovich notes that “U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT.) weighed in with a string of angry tweets of his own. One of those: a quote-tweet from a Big East burner account.” One such poster, Blue Demon Degenerate, who refused to reveal his true identity and is responsible for the Divine Providence documentary on Georgetown HC Ed Cooley earlier this season, explains Big East Twitter’s ethos: “The personality that the Big East was founded on is alive in spirit, on [Big East Twitter]. Rollie Massimino, Big John Thompson, Pitino, those guys were/are basketball psychos and they talked s***. That’s what this conference is for.” Journalist/Connecticut fan Russell Steinberg adds: “It’s a phenomenally weird environment of people who hate each other, but in a loving way—and who loathe everyone else.” The culture is not all bad, however, as Christovich points out many of the personalities have met and become friends in real life. They’ve also directed their passion into charitable purposes, such as donating money to The Husky Ticket Project, which donates UConn tickets to local children. That particular campaign even garnered inclusion from Huskies Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley, Women’s Basketball HC Geno Auriemma and Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT). More. (link)

CNBC’s Alex Sherman takes an in-depth look at ESPN’s future as it continues to navigate the balance between linear and streaming, and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro believes it might not be necessary for a strategic partner to gain a small stake in the company. “It’s not about equity. It’s not about these partners taking an ownership interest in ESPN. This is about partnership and accelerating the launch or the adoption of ESPN flagship.” Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, however, says: “It’s possible that maybe that cash itself is what they’re after. But strategically I don't really see a benefit in bringing on yet another minority partner into ESPN.” As sports ratings continue to increase and drive up the cost of media rights, ESPN continues to experiment with new formats, such as the Monday Night Football Manningcast, to bring in viewers who may be less interested in traditional broadcasts. Meadowlark Media Co-Founder/CEO/former ESPN President John Skipper: “I had experience building studio content around games. I'm like let's build some studio content, let's do pregame, postgame. [In the] streaming world, people don't care much. They come in right before the kickoff starts and they leave pretty quickly after the [game] ends.” Sherman notes that could portend trouble for ESPN’s studio shows, including SportsCenter; however, both Pitaro and EVP for Programming and Acquisitions Rosalyn Durant insist studio programming will continue to be a major part of the network. Pitaro: “If you look at our studio programming today, it is pretty much across the board our daytime lineup is up and to the right.” Lots more. (link)

KETV in Omaha gets text message records between former Nebraska AD/current Texas A&M boss Trev Alberts & key Huskers leaders as Alberts was in discussion with the Aggies. UNL regent Robert Schafer to Alberts: “Let me know if you want to visit yet tonight. Regardless, please give me a call before finalizing any decision. We are going to make this work.” More, from regent Timothy Clare: “I'd just like you to consider that we changed our structure so that you'd report directly to the President; we approved every project you brought before us. We have a void at President, but that will be filled soon. Give us a chance...please call. [...] If you stay at NU, I would pledge to work with you and our new President to provide you with what you're looking for from a structure/operational/leadership standpoint.” Also, from Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen: “Hey Trev. Just so you know I simply respect you (and) your decision. Hope you understand that I tried to do everything ... to try and fix things.” A bit more. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken says the success of the ACC in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament comes “when it needed it the most.” With the various legal battles between the league, Florida State and Clemson, plus the College Football Playoff revenue distribution disparity, as well as receiving only five bids to the men’s tourney, the fact that three of them are in the Elite 8 has made “many of those big problems seem a little smaller.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “Some of the narrative to me gets completely distorted from the reality of what’s actually happening in our conference. There’s a tension to certain areas of it, and I understand that. But to me, that hasn’t kept us from continuing to perform.” Wolken: “The ACC doesn’t just have a lot to celebrate this weekend, it has every right to pound its chest toward the critics who thought all season that the league had lost a step in its signature sport.” (link)

The numbers are in from Sports TV Ratings and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament game between Clemson and Arizona did 6.526M on CBS, while Alabama vs. North Carolina did 7.797M. On cable, Illinois vs. Iowa State pulled in 3.3M (2.714M on TBS + 586K on truTV) and San Diego State vs. UConn did 2.8M (2.303 on TBS + 529K on truTV). For comparison, the MLB’s Chicago Cubs vs. Texas Rangers opener on ESPN did 1.6M. (link)

USC Women’s Basketball HC Lindsay Gottlieb calls the Ivy League’s post-grad transfer rule “the best rule in the history of rules” as her squad features three key contributors who came from Ivy institutions as the Trojans ready to tip against Baylor today in the Sweet 16. Gottlieb, who played at Brown, adds, “That's an Ivy League principle. That league obviously maintains a different kind of philosophical barometer than anyone else. That's great for that league. Certainly these players have shown with an extra year, they have their Harvard degrees, Columbia degrees, Penn degrees. Now they have a year to experience something different.” (link)

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball standout Hannah Hidalgo missed the opening minutes of yesterday’s second quarter against Oregon State after referees asked her to remove her nose ring, an adornment she’s played with all season. Hidalgo: “I thought it was B.S., because I'm on a run, I'm on a roll. I scored two baskets and then having to sit out for all that time, I was starting to get cold. I think [the officials] were worried about the wrong things. They should have reffed the game.” After the game, the NCAA pointed to a rule prohibiting jewelry. Fighting Irish HC Niele Ivey: “She's had a nose ring the entire season. Just wish we would have known beforehand. Can't control it, so we had to move on. But yeah, stoppage of play is never great when you're trying to have flow.” (link)

In year one of the WBIT, 176 Women’s Basketball programs signed agreements to participate if selected, with a committee of five coaches and three former administrators selecting the 32-team field. Sportico’s Dylan Manfre also notes: “Participating schools in the WBIT are not paid, nor is there any prize money for the winner—and the same is true for the WNIT. However, there are some financial differences in terms of how the models are structured. The WBIT retains all ticket revenue and will reimburse host schools for all approved operation-related expenses.” Conversely, WNIT participants do keep their net ticket revenue and “pay a game guarantee of $15,000 to host the first and second rounds ($5,000 for Round 1 and $10,000 for Round 2).” (link)

Looking to take advantage of a “massive moment” in collegiate women’s basketball, per WNBA CMO Phil Cook, the league will roll out a ‘Welcome to the W’ campaign tonight during ESPN broadcasts. Cook notes today’s college stars have “a brand identity already established. That gives us all a great head start because it comes with an audience. So we're getting the advantage of having baked in audiences with these athletes who fans are going to continue to follow.” (link)

Eastern Michigan’s football team has completed its last spring opportunity on the gray turf, affectionately known as “The Factory” and beginning next week, Rynearson Stadium will undergo renovations that include the removal of the track and installation of a new playing surface. The new “Maxx Crosby Field,” is on schedule to be completed by late May. A new outdoor track & field complex will be built thanks, in part, to a $2M gift from former EMU student-athletes Dan McClory and Keith Moore. Renderings inside. (link)

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, whose podcast is sponsored by FanDuel, downplays the hype around recent sports gambling controversies, asserting there is a decades-long history in sports. More recently, “I remember when this happened with fantasy 20 years ago when people were like, ‘fantasy’s going to ruin the game. People care more about their fantasy teams than real teams.’ And we had to go through that whole stretch. Guess what, it’s just a different muscle when you’re following sports. I think we’re going to get there with the gambling thing. But what’s going to happen is a lot of people are going to latch onto this. You know how the internet goes. This is something they can go nuts about. To me, it’s like we’re in the 1.0 era of all this stuff. Just because Jontay Porter, if he did that, is an idiot, doesn’t mean we’re heading toward the 1919 Black Sox scandal… I look at it like, this has been a part of sports forever.” (link)
