Nebraska Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Doug Ewald tells the Husker Doc Talk podcast the NU athletic department went through the stages of grief in the days following former AD Trev Alberts’ departure, and by Friday, “everybody was just pissed off around the office because I’m sitting there going, ‘Damn, this dude brought me here two and a half years ago.’ … No warning whatsoever. Don’t know what the tipping point was. The only conversation I had with him on that Thursday morning was, ‘You know, Trev, as big of a guy as you are when it comes to honesty, integrity,’ when that was leaked from somebody in Houston or wherever it was, I said, ‘That was your chance to walk it back. You could have walked it back at that point in time, and what he told me was when that happened, when that leaked, he had no offer – none.” Ewald says Interim President Chris Kabourek tried to convince Alberts to stay and asked him not to make the trip to College Station to meet with Texas A&M officials, but “for whatever reason [Alberts] was compelled to make the trip.” While he’s yet to meet new Huskers AD Troy Dannen one-on-one, Ewald says Dannen is “straightforward” and “not afraid to make a decision. Sets expectations. So, [I’m] anxious [to get] more time with him and sort this thing out. I want to be here. I'm one of the people that believes that you need to come to work every day and show your value, prove your value. I'm not afraid of that. I'm not afraid of my track record. I’ll let that speak for itself.” Lots more from Ewald, including his thoughts on membership in the AAU, the future of NIL and more. (link)

More on the three-point lines at the Moda Center in Portland as The Athletic’s Grace Raynor reports: “Officials asked Texas HC Vic Schaefer and NC State HC Wes Moore how they wanted to proceed. If both coaches agreed to play on, the game would tip off as scheduled. There was an option, Schaefer said, to bring somebody in to correctly re-mark the lines, but it would have taken about an hour. Coaches wondered if such a delay would cost the players their coveted television slot on ABC, in addition to the potential impacts it might have created on their team’s rhythm and routine.” Schaefer was hesitant to play at first but says: “Wes wanted to play, and we played. I wasn’t gonna be the guy that goes, ‘No, I don’t want to do it.’ … I hate to say this, but I have a lot of colleagues who would say, ‘Only in women’s basketball.’ It’s a shame, really, that it even happened.” Raynor observes this is one of many hiccups that have occurred this tournament, along with Utah players having to switch hotels after being to target of racial epithets and the removal of an official at halftime of NC State’s opening round game against Chattanooga. “It’s time for the embarrassing moments to stop overshadowing what has become an incredible time in women’s basketball, both from a competitive standpoint and the star power in the game. The NCAA says the error was made by its vendor, Connor Sports, and “while the NCAA’s vendor has apologized for the error, we will investigate how this happened in the first place. The NCAA is working now to ensure the accuracy of all court markings for future games.” (link); The AP’s Ralph Russo reports the discrepancy between three-point lines was nine inches and that Connor Sports has corrected the error for tonight’s USC-Connecticut game. (link); NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman explains that a review of the court setup found the “center-of-basket” hole under the basket where the arc was measured incorrectly was punched in the wrong place. Specifically, it was off-center by nine inches, but Holzman notes the sides of the three-point line were accurately painted. “We apologize for this error and the length of time for which it went unnoticed. Simply put, the court did not meet our expectations, and the NCAA should’ve caught the error sooner.” (link)

With the Men’s Basketball Final Four set, all NCAA Tournament units have been distributed, and the ACC has earned 17 for roughly $34M, followed by the SEC (~$32M), Big Ten and Big 12 (~$30M), and Big East (~$22M). The Mountain West and Pac-12 are expected to earn around $20M each while the Atlantic 10 and WCC are slated to net $8M per conference. All remaining leagues earned two units or fewer. (link)

In the lead up to tonight’s showdown, LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese is aware how her rivalry with Iowa star Caitlin Clark is perceived but explains: “I don’t think people realize it’s not personal. Me and Caitlin Clark don’t hate each other. I want everybody to understand that.” That said, Reese is also aware that the storyline involving the two is helping to grow the sport and says: “I’ll take the villain role. I’ll take the hit for it, but I know we’re growing women’s basketball. If this is the way we’re going to do it, then this is the way we’re going to do it.” For her part, Clark says there’s “definitely that competitive fire” between her and Reese. “Both of us want to win more than anything, and that’s how it should be when you’re a competitor and you get into a situation like this.” Reese agrees and adds: “Once I get between those lines, there’s no friends. I’m going to talk trash to you. I’m going to do whatever it takes to get in your head the whole entire game, but after the game, we can kick it.” Meanwhile, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi believes it’s safe to assume ESPN will draw 8.5M to 9M viewers for tonight’s matchup. Sports Illustrated owner Authentic Brands Group has filed a lawsuit against The Arena Group, SI’s erstwhile publisher, seeking the $48.75M Arena owes Authentic plus compensatory and other damages. The suit also seeks “an injunction requiring Arena to comply with its post-termination contractual obligations and prohibiting Defendants from continuing to violate ABG’s rights.” The suit highlights the behavior of Arena owner Manoj Bhargava, who ABG claims “demanded the negotiation of a new deal on terms more favorable to him and signaled that he planned to use any termination of the Licensing Agreement by ABG as grounds to fire Arena’s unionized SI staff. In response, ABG insisted that Bhargava honor Arena’s contractual obligations under the Licensing Agreement, while also negotiating with him to protect the SI brand and mitigate any damages. … Bhargava behaved more like a gangster than a trusted business partner and good-faith counterparty, threatening to rip up the Licensing Agreement, and essentially burn everything down and destroy the SI brand, unless ABG entered into a new agreement on completely new terms.” Awful Announcing’s Andrew Bucholtz notes the biggest takeaway from this lawsuit is more than a simple fight over money. “Absolutely, the almost-$50M Authentic says Arena owes it is significant for both companies. But for media consumers in particular, the Authentic and Arena bottom lines aren’t as notable as what happens with SI. And this Authentic lawsuit’s request for an injunction to stop Arena interference with Minute’s operation of SI is particularly notable there. That could seemingly make things much smoother for SI if it’s granted, and have implications for both Minute and Arena’s sports efforts.” (link)

Liberty Media will acquire 86% of MotoGP in a deal valued at around $4B. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of the year. New Notre Dame boss Pete Bevacqua continues the media rounds, this time with Irish Illustrated’s Tim Prister & Tim O’Malley. Bevacqua on how he’ll be different from former Fighting Irish AD Jack Swarbrick: “I won't do things exactly the same way Jack did them because quite frankly, if he was in this role now and in the future, he wouldn't do them the exact same way he's done them in the past because it just wouldn't make sense anymore. [...] So you have to stay current, you have to have that north star of what makes Notre Dame special. Obviously, our Catholic tradition, our Catholic heritage, and as I say to our current student-athletes and recruits, regardless of the sport, you have to come in here with eyes wide open.” Bevacqua also touched on NIL: “We believe firmly that more and more of the operations of NIL are going to move in-house in some form of decree from the NCAA or Congress. I think that will happen sooner than later and we're going through the process now of making sure that we're ready to stand that up and move as soon as that switch is flipped because you can't take a deep breath and figure it out once the switch is flipped. You'll sit on your hands for six months while you're figuring it out. You've got to be ready to roll as soon as that happens.” More. (link)

The two three-point lines on the court of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Portland regional were painted at different distances, a mistake discovered after four regional semifinal games had been played on Friday and Saturday. Coaches from Texas and NC State decided to proceed with their game Sunday, despite the discrepancy. Texas HC Vic Schaefer: “I have a lot of colleagues who would say, ’Only in women’s basketball.’ It’s a shame.” Sportico’s Jacob Feldman: “The NCAA said it will be measuring all court lines and markings on the court. While the NCAA said its vendor has apologized for the error, the organization said it will investigate how this happened and will work to ensure the accuracy of all the court markings for future games.” ESPN reported that the 3-point percentage for all teams on the end with the deeper arc was 3% lower, heading into Sunday’s game. The issue has been corrected for tonight’s UConn vs. USC tilt. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann does not think the Washington Post story about LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey will spark a defamation suit. McCann: “Although Babb’s story adds new details to a preexisting perception of Mulkey as insensitive toward LGBTQIA+ community members—specifically her players—and writes she is estranged from her father and sister, Tammy, much of the story draws from previous publications, including Mulkey’s 2007 autobiography, ‘Won’t Back Down,’ or from statements made on the record by interviewees. That approach largely insulates the Post from legitimate claims of defamation. It could empower the Post, should Mulkey sue, to invoke anti-SLAPP protections, which guard journalists from intimidation designed to suppress their First Amendment rights, to not only defeat her case but force her to pay legal fees and costs … The Post also says Mulkey and LSU also declined multiple opportunities to comment. Those denials would make it harder for Mulkey to claim there was actual malice since repeated requests for comment implies the publication did care about whether the statements were true or false.” If Mulkey does sue the post, it would likely be in Louisiana, which has an anti-SLAPP statute, explains McCann. Oral Roberts AD Tim Johnson talks to Front Office Sports about the long tail impact of a deep Men’s Basketball March Madness run, like the 2021 Sweet 16 berth for the Eagles: “ It changed this university for the next 50 years, that three-week period. [...] Hopefully one day we’ll be a case study. So that in five, six years, people are saying, ‘Man, how did ORU do that?’” Davidson AD Chris Clunie also chimes in on how the Wildcats’ 2008 streak to the Elite 8 led to a conference move & greater visibility: “That ability to have more teams in the tournament, to have more TV revenue because of that, because of NCAA units and distribution, that’s a game-changer.” Clunie also says high-profile non-conference matchups have become a key differentiator that were historically buy games: “If you only have a handful, then it puts more pressure on you. You gotta win those. That win (over Alabama in 2021) helped solidify us as an at-large team. We were 15–3 in conference and had a really good season, but that was our opportunity.” (link)

The San Diego State-focused MESA Foundation tells the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler it had a $700K NIL budget for the Aztecs Men’s Basketball program this season. MESA Foundation co-founder Jeff Smith indicates the kitty will be closer to $1M for the 2024-25 campaign, though there are fundraising plans in place to push the budget to $1.3M - $1.5M. Smith: “We will be in a good position, but we won’t be in a position that I think all of us would like to be in, which is not to be a reason why some players simply decide they’re not going to come here. It happened to us a year ago.” Smith also says he’s been involved in conversations about the NIL-driven MTE in Las Vegas next year that could bring another seven digits to the collective: “I feel like it’s going in the right direction. But it isn’t done, and there’s a lot of stuff that has to happen before it’s done and we can feel comfortable about it.” (link)

Key social & digital media voices around the sports industry chime in on the impact of a potential TikTok ban. Toledo AD Bryan Blair: “In some ways, TikTok is a trendsetter because the music, the singalongs … I think we’d be smart to bring [those] into our in-venue experience to give our students and some of the younger fans something they can relate to, [like] a TikTok dance as a promotion during a timeout. I think there’s some relatability. There’s been a lot of studies that show the correlation between what somebody sees on TV and in-venue and what they see on TikTok and their phone. … [It’s] just one more tool, but I think you’ve got to be really targeted with how you use it and what you put on it.” Former Clemson Head of Creative & Digital/founder of Gantt C.S. Jonathan Gantt: “From an NIL perspective, there are a decent amount of college student athletes who have used the monetization tools in order to generate revenue. That is, to me, something that may get lost a little bit. The obvious thing is teams and leagues not having it from a marketing function anymore, but there are also these college athletes, maybe not the biggest-name stars necessarily, but a lot of college athletes from Olympic sports teams who have been able to cultivate a following on TikTok. This could have a pretty big impact on their earning ability, because they were using the monetization tools directly in ways that big leagues and teams probably didn’t need to.” More from SBJ. An Inside Higher Ed survey of 380 college and university presidents found that campus leaders by and large see race relations improving on campus; 83% of respondents rated the state of race relations at their institution campus as good or excellent, up from 78% last year. Another 16% described race relations as fair and just 1% perceived them as poor. Meanwhile, 66% of presidents expressed concern about the decreasing public confidence in higher ed. They cited the top reasons for public skepticism as affordability (36%), concerns about workforce preparation (27%), and perceived ideological bias (16%). And more than half of presidents (57%) believe there is validity to the cost concerns. Despite those worries, 82% indicated they were confident about their institution’s financial stability over the next five years. Even when the timeline was expanded to 10 years, 80% of presidents expressed confidence in their institution's financial health. Another survey question involved how likely respondents were to encourage/discourage their peers from pursuing a campus CEO position, 32% said they were more likely now than in 2020 to discourage talented colleagues from taking the job of president. They identified the greatest pressures on the presidency to be financial constraints (25%); enrollment challenges (20%); too many responsibilities and not enough time (12 percent); external political pressures (9%); personnel challenges and management (7%); and a lack of appetite for the changes they want to make (7%).” Full report. According to workforce analytics firm ActivTrak, which analyzed 75K workers across North America, the average worker now signs off an hour earlier on Fridays, at 4:03 pm, than in 2021. That’s also an hour earlier than the average quitting time the rest of the week. Founder/CEO of Interactive learning platform Albert, Luke Liu, who moved to a half-day Friday police in 2022, says of his all-remote staff’s productivity: “On paper, it’s a 10% loss of time. In reality, it’s a 2% to 5% loss.” The Wall Street Journal’s Vanessa Fuhrmans “Friday, of course, was always the day we might dress down or cut out early for Happy Hour. The difference now is that it’s become a repository for all the ways we—and our employers—want to fix work life. Welcome to the meeting-free zone of Focus Fridays. Need a respite from the grind? More bosses are instituting year-round Summer Fridays as an antidote.” More data around the shift in the Friday schedule. (link)
