+ Minnesota State Mankato became the first DII program to win both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships in the same season since Central Missouri in 1984. (link)

+ The Women’s program knocked off Texas Woman’s for its second title in program history. HC Emilee Thiesse: “So much fun. What great national buzz going around for Minnesota State University. Just such great support between the two programs, great connections between the players, the staffs. It's just been so much fun to see the type of energy that their team plays with that mimics our team's so much. There's just so much fun around Maverick basketball right now.” (link)

+ The Men’s team beat defending-champions Nova Southeastern with a last-second three to win 88-85. HC Matt Margenthaler: “How about the last 24 hours for Minnesota State University? … It's a basketball school. It's a basketball town. It's a lot of fun. I'm proud of our women, proud of our men, and we're going to enjoy this one. […] It's been unbelievable, really the last month and a half or so of the season, it sort of blew up. ... Coming here [to Evansville], people continued to follow. It got bigger from Tuesday to Thursday to Saturday. We had a bunch of people come over last night from the women's championship game.” (link)

Lincoln (MO) taps Asst. AD for Administration Tim Abney as its Interim AD, starting today. President John Moseley: “Under his leadership, we have seen the reintroduction of baseball and soccer, and he has also helped guide us through the process of joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference. […] Tim has a longstanding history with Lincoln University Athletics from all aspects–as a student, coach and administrator. His experience and genuine love for our University and our students are key factors in his selection for this role. I know he will lead well.” (link)

NE10 Commissioner Julie Ruppert sits down with D2.ticker/Connect’s Anthony Grassi from the 2024 NCAA Convention to discuss key DII issues, membership challenges and the future of media rights for the league. As a new member of the Strategic Vision and Planning Committee, Ruppert believes student-athlete well-being and an excellent championship experience “should be the two hallmarks that we focus on moving forward, whether that translates into regular opportunities to examine championship bracket sizes or the way we seed teams. So much of what we do and the way our institutions can afford college athletics and 24 sports is around the regional concept and so I don't think that goes away, but I think it would be irresponsible for us to not study ways to make that better, especially in the bracketing. My commissioner colleagues, we've talked started to talk long and hard about what those bracketing principles could look like – could you try and avoid teams playing not only in the last regular season game but then in the conference championship and then one week later in the NCAA first round, so are there ways to take a look at that.” Ruppert says the league’s thinking around monetizing the conference network “has to evolve,” noting that no formal decision has been made. Further: “If there’s even any thought that we could generate revenue back to the schools to offset the ability to do more on the broadcasts, hire professionalized positions within the department to assist in that because everybody’s come to expect that you are going to be able to sit on your couch and watch your son or daughter in a game, home or away. I think that’s going to be an important next step of our evolution as a conference is evaluating how do we get there, with making sure people are comfortable with it, but that’s going to be an important next step for us.” Check out the full conversation only on Connect. Carol Bonner, Associate Registrar for Athletic Certification and Eligibility at Texas Tech, explains her role on campus and how it supports athletics by being housed outside of the department. 

• Manage the process of determining eligibility for student-athletes
• The role is different on every college campus
• Decisions are very objective - no subjectivity

Bonner's office is also responsible for managing the research for the NCAA Graduation Success Rates and Academic Progress Rates at the school. Northwest Missouri State Men’s Basketball HC Ben McCollum is headed to Drake (DI) in the same capacity. McCollum led the Bearcats to four DII national titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances in 15 seasons. President Lance Tatum: “Coach McCollum’s dedication, leadership and passion have been instrumental in shaping our men’s basketball program into what it is today. Fayetteville State removes the interim tag in naming Tyreece Brown as Women’s Basketball HC. AD Todd Bennett: “Coach Brown has consistently demonstrated the utmost professionalism throughout the season and during this process. His unwavering commitment to the team has been truly remarkable. The positive impact he has had on our players as a leader and mentor cannot be overstated. We are fortunate to have him as an invaluable member of our team.” (link)

An Inside Higher Ed survey of 380 college and university presidents found that campus leaders by and large see race relations improving on campus; 83% of respondents rated the state of race relations at their institution campus as good or excellent, up from 78% last year. Another 16% described race relations as fair and just 1% perceived them as poor. Meanwhile, 66% of presidents expressed concern about the decreasing public confidence in higher ed. They cited the top reasons for public skepticism as affordability (36%), concerns about workforce preparation (27%), and perceived ideological bias (16%). And more than half of presidents (57%) believe there is validity to the cost concerns. Despite those worries, 82% indicated they were confident about their institution’s financial stability over the next five years. Even when the timeline was expanded to 10 years, 80% of presidents expressed confidence in their institution's financial health. Another survey question involved how likely respondents were to encourage/discourage their peers from pursuing a campus CEO position, 32% said they were more likely now than in 2020 to discourage talented colleagues from taking the job of president. They identified the greatest pressures on the presidency to be financial constraints (25%); enrollment challenges (20%); too many responsibilities and not enough time (12 percent); external political pressures (9%); personnel challenges and management (7%); and a lack of appetite for the changes they want to make (7%).” Full report.
