Manhattan President Milo Riverso insists the school is not closing, though he acknowledged in a meeting yesterday that “I’m here to assure you there’s nothing to be nervous about. I don’t want you to be nervous about the fiscal happening at the school. We’re out of the woods. … We have no intention of seeing anything happen to this great institution other than to continue to provide the same high-quality education and opportunities for the future as it has for our entire 170-year history.” (link)

Winston & Strawn Co-Executive Chairman/NCAA foil Jeffrey Kessler recently told Puck’s Eriq Gardner that “we’re maybe halfway down the road” in redefining the economic model of college sports. When Gardner asked Kessler what college sports will look like in five years, Kessler responded: “It’ll keep evolving, but it reminds me of the fact that when I started practicing law, there was no free agency in the NFL and there was no free agency in the NBA. It was just barely starting. All the owners said then, ‘Oh, if you allow this, it’s going to destroy the game. Fans won’t like it.’ Guess what? I suspect you don’t even remember the sports without free agency. It’ll be the same thing in college sports.” (link)

Los Angeles Times columnist Ben Bolch pens an apology for his recent article on LSU’s women’s basketball team. It reads, in part: “Words matter. As a journalist, no one should know this more than me. Yet, I have failed miserably in my choice of words. In my column previewing the LSU-UCLA women’s basketball game, I tried to be clever in my phrasing about one team’s attitude, using alliteration while not understanding the deeply offensive connotations or associations. I also used metaphors that were not appropriate. Our society has had to deal with so many layers of misogyny, racism, and negativity that I can now see why the words I used were wrong. It was not my intent to be hurtful, but I now understand that I terribly missed the mark. I sincerely apologize to the LSU and UCLA basketball teams and to our readers. UCLA, a school I have covered for nearly a decade, champions diversity and is known as a leader in inclusivity. However, I have not upheld that standard in what I wrote, and I will do much better. I am deeply sorry.” (link)

Learfield Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Talent Acquisition Ian Moses joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at 2024 PACnet to discuss the impact of DEI work on corporate culture. Moses breaks down the specific systems he’s created for implementing DEI work within the organization and discusses his methods for evaluating the effectiveness of his efforts. Moses: “It is becoming more of an executive role in that you’re shaping and helping support the culture of an organization. … There are moments where I feel great about where we’re going and there are moments where I’m like ‘We’ve got a lot of work to do.’ But if not me, then who? So I keep on sawing wood, and I keep on working with leaders to continue to help them to see maybe their blind spots, see how they can be more inclusive as leaders so that we can continue to create that culture of inclusion, and so that we can continue to assess and get to where we are trying to get to. At the end of the day, I'd like to work myself out of a job.” Full interview on ADU. (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Valparaiso Softball HC Meaggan Pettipiece has resigned, and AC Laney Jones will serve as Interim HC for the remainder of the season. (link)
+ Texas has named Arizona State Swimming & Diving HC Bob Bowman as Director of Swimming & Diving. (link); Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde: “Obvious question: what happens to Bowman’s powerhouse current training group, which includes WR holder Leon Marchand and Olympian pro swimmers Regan Smith, Simone Manuel, Chase Kalisz, etc. The expectation is that Bowman will keep coaching them through Olympic Trials and Paris. But it may require some juggling of locations — Bowman likes to do a long Colorado Springs camp before Trials, for instance. Eddie Reese is going to keep coaching the Texas men through the Olympics, I’m told.” (link)
+ Arizona State has promoted AHC Herbie Behm to Swimming & Diving HC. (link)
+ Louisville and former Men’s Basketball HC Kenny Payne have reached a buyout settlement of $7.25M, which Payne will receive in payments of $201K per month through March 31, 2027. WDRB’s Eric Crawford observes the agreement puts Louisville in the “unusual position” of paying its former coach more than its current coach. Payne will earn $2.5M per year not to coach while new Cards HC Pat Kelsey will receive $2.3M before incentives. Furthermore, Crawford notes UL will be paying basketball coaches (two former, one current) $526,387 per month through January of 2025, when [former HC Chris] Mack’s agreement ends. Payne’s agreement also includes a non-disparagement clause whereby Payne, “agrees that he will not make any disparaging statements or remarks about (the U of L Athletic Association) or the University of Louisville.” Though Crawford explains Payne may respond truthfully to regulatory agencies, law enforcement or in response to a court order. Full separation agreement. (link); In addition to his $2.3M salary, Kelsey can earn bonuses ranging from $25K to $500K, including $50K for making the NCAA Tournament, and an additional $50K each round the team advances. He would earn a $500K bonus for winning a national championship. If either party terminates the contract without cause, the other would owe 95% of the remaining guaranteed compensation.” (link)
+ New James Madison Men’s Basketball HC Preston Spradlin will earn $600K per year plus incentives. Spradlin is eligible for bonuses ranging from $2,500 to $100K, including $10K for an NCAA Tournament berth, $50K for reaching the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, $75K for making the Final Four and $100K for cutting down the nets. If Spradlin were to resign before April 2, 2026, for a job in the SEC, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or Big 12, he would owe JMU $1M. If he were to leave for an Atlantic 10, AAC, Conference USA, Mountain West, MAC or Sun Belt school, Spradlin would owe the Dukes $450K. Those figures decrease to $500K and $250K, respectively, starting April 3, 2026. It is also “specifically agreed” that Spradlin may only resign once the season is concluded. If JMU parts ways with Spradlin between now and January 31, 2026, it would owe him 75% of his remaining salary. During the next calendar year that figure increases to 85%. On February 1, 2027, and beyond, Spradlin would be owed 100% of his remaining salary. His deal runs through 2030. (link)
+ Iowa Women’s Basketball HC Lisa Bluder will receive a $100K bonus for reaching the Final Four. According to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, Bluder now has a two-year extension, $150K raise, beginning next season (the combination of the extension and the raise add nearly $3.7M to the current value of her contract, with $2M guaranteed) and $310K in bonuses this season.” (link)

George Mason will not move forward with the Washington Freedom on negotiations to build a temporary baseball and cricket stadium on the West Campus. GMU President Gregory Washington: “After hard work and due diligence from the team at Mason, we have concluded that this opportunity does not meet the strategic objectives and interests of our campus and community and the Washington Freedom. … Moving forward, the university will maintain a dialogue with all stakeholders and improve opportunities for feedback. We remain committed to working together to grow the university and build a strong and sustainable infrastructure, including our athletics facilities, for everyone who participates with Mason.” (link)

A group of Fairfield alumni have launched the Red Sea Rising collective in partnership with Student Athlete NIL (SANIL). As college athletics evolves at a rapid pace, it is imperative to continually position Fairfield Athletics for success while providing a championship caliber student-athlete experience. Red Sea Rising, along with assistance from SANIL, will be an effective vehicle for our student-athletes to engage in opportunities to maximize their NIL while building their personal brand." (link)

LSU has settled a lawsuit with a group of 10 former students who allege they were sexually abused by LSU football players. Terms were not immediately disclosed, and the court record indicates the parties "settled all of their claims and have agreed to amicably resolve this dispute." The case was dismissed without costs and without prejudice but can be reopened if the settlement isn’t finalized in a reasonable amount of time. (link)

Former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says the NBA needs a streaming firm or firms to save the league from a future potentially fraught with uncertainty: “If streamers come in and are as big as I think they are going to be, it won’t be an issue. But even if I’m 80% confident, there’s always that 20% chance. So it’s hard to peg it exactly. I don’t think we’re going to have a problem for the next 10 years. After that, who knows what the world’s going to be like from a technology, streaming, AI, multimedia (standpoint).” Cuban also tells Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green he would like to see the NBA work harder to monetize its social media presence in the face of potential decreases in broadcast fees. “The NBA is huge on social media. Guys in the NBA are, other than maybe soccer overseas, the biggest athletes on the planet. And that carries a lot of value. So I’ve pushed hard and continue to push hard that we’re under-monetizing that. So even if those (media rights) deals aren’t where I expect them to be, I think the social media side will pick up the slack at some point. Maybe not next year, but five, 10 years, whatever it is.” (link)

Nebraska Executive Assoc. AD/CFO Doug Ewald tells the Husker Doc Talk podcast the NU athletic department went through the stages of grief in the days following former AD Trev Alberts’ departure, and by Friday, “everybody was just pissed off around the office because I’m sitting there going, ‘Damn, this dude brought me here two and a half years ago.’ … No warning whatsoever. Don’t know what the tipping point was. The only conversation I had with him on that Thursday morning was, ‘You know, Trev, as big of a guy as you are when it comes to honesty, integrity,’ when that was leaked from somebody in Houston or wherever it was, I said, ‘That was your chance to walk it back. You could have walked it back at that point in time, and what he told me was when that happened, when that leaked, he had no offer – none.” Ewald says Interim President Chris Kabourek tried to convince Alberts to stay and asked him not to make the trip to College Station to meet with Texas A&M officials, but “for whatever reason [Alberts] was compelled to make the trip.” While he’s yet to meet new Huskers AD Troy Dannen one-on-one, Ewald says Dannen is “straightforward” and “not afraid to make a decision. Sets expectations. So, [I’m] anxious [to get] more time with him and sort this thing out. I want to be here. I'm one of the people that believes that you need to come to work every day and show your value, prove your value. I'm not afraid of that. I'm not afraid of my track record. I’ll let that speak for itself.” Lots more from Ewald, including his thoughts on membership in the AAU, the future of NIL and more. (link)

More on the three-point lines at the Moda Center in Portland as The Athletic’s Grace Raynor reports: “Officials asked Texas HC Vic Schaefer and NC State HC Wes Moore how they wanted to proceed. If both coaches agreed to play on, the game would tip off as scheduled. There was an option, Schaefer said, to bring somebody in to correctly re-mark the lines, but it would have taken about an hour. Coaches wondered if such a delay would cost the players their coveted television slot on ABC, in addition to the potential impacts it might have created on their team’s rhythm and routine.” Schaefer was hesitant to play at first but says: “Wes wanted to play, and we played. I wasn’t gonna be the guy that goes, ‘No, I don’t want to do it.’ … I hate to say this, but I have a lot of colleagues who would say, ‘Only in women’s basketball.’ It’s a shame, really, that it even happened.” Raynor observes this is one of many hiccups that have occurred this tournament, along with Utah players having to switch hotels after being to target of racial epithets and the removal of an official at halftime of NC State’s opening round game against Chattanooga. “It’s time for the embarrassing moments to stop overshadowing what has become an incredible time in women’s basketball, both from a competitive standpoint and the star power in the game. The NCAA says the error was made by its vendor, Connor Sports, and “while the NCAA’s vendor has apologized for the error, we will investigate how this happened in the first place. The NCAA is working now to ensure the accuracy of all court markings for future games.” (link); The AP’s Ralph Russo reports the discrepancy between three-point lines was nine inches and that Connor Sports has corrected the error for tonight’s USC-Connecticut game. (link); NCAA VP of Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman explains that a review of the court setup found the “center-of-basket” hole under the basket where the arc was measured incorrectly was punched in the wrong place. Specifically, it was off-center by nine inches, but Holzman notes the sides of the three-point line were accurately painted. “We apologize for this error and the length of time for which it went unnoticed. Simply put, the court did not meet our expectations, and the NCAA should’ve caught the error sooner.” (link)

With the Men’s Basketball Final Four set, all NCAA Tournament units have been distributed, and the ACC has earned 17 for roughly $34M, followed by the SEC (~$32M), Big Ten and Big 12 (~$30M), and Big East (~$22M). The Mountain West and Pac-12 are expected to earn around $20M each while the Atlantic 10 and WCC are slated to net $8M per conference. All remaining leagues earned two units or fewer. (link)

In the lead up to tonight’s showdown, LSU women’s basketball star Angel Reese is aware how her rivalry with Iowa star Caitlin Clark is perceived but explains: “I don’t think people realize it’s not personal. Me and Caitlin Clark don’t hate each other. I want everybody to understand that.” That said, Reese is also aware that the storyline involving the two is helping to grow the sport and says: “I’ll take the villain role. I’ll take the hit for it, but I know we’re growing women’s basketball. If this is the way we’re going to do it, then this is the way we’re going to do it.” For her part, Clark says there’s “definitely that competitive fire” between her and Reese. “Both of us want to win more than anything, and that’s how it should be when you’re a competitor and you get into a situation like this.” Reese agrees and adds: “Once I get between those lines, there’s no friends. I’m going to talk trash to you. I’m going to do whatever it takes to get in your head the whole entire game, but after the game, we can kick it.” Meanwhile, Sportico’s Anthony Crupi believes it’s safe to assume ESPN will draw 8.5M to 9M viewers for tonight’s matchup. Sports Illustrated owner Authentic Brands Group has filed a lawsuit against The Arena Group, SI’s erstwhile publisher, seeking the $48.75M Arena owes Authentic plus compensatory and other damages. The suit also seeks “an injunction requiring Arena to comply with its post-termination contractual obligations and prohibiting Defendants from continuing to violate ABG’s rights.” The suit highlights the behavior of Arena owner Manoj Bhargava, who ABG claims “demanded the negotiation of a new deal on terms more favorable to him and signaled that he planned to use any termination of the Licensing Agreement by ABG as grounds to fire Arena’s unionized SI staff. In response, ABG insisted that Bhargava honor Arena’s contractual obligations under the Licensing Agreement, while also negotiating with him to protect the SI brand and mitigate any damages. … Bhargava behaved more like a gangster than a trusted business partner and good-faith counterparty, threatening to rip up the Licensing Agreement, and essentially burn everything down and destroy the SI brand, unless ABG entered into a new agreement on completely new terms.” Awful Announcing’s Andrew Bucholtz notes the biggest takeaway from this lawsuit is more than a simple fight over money. “Absolutely, the almost-$50M Authentic says Arena owes it is significant for both companies. But for media consumers in particular, the Authentic and Arena bottom lines aren’t as notable as what happens with SI. And this Authentic lawsuit’s request for an injunction to stop Arena interference with Minute’s operation of SI is particularly notable there. That could seemingly make things much smoother for SI if it’s granted, and have implications for both Minute and Arena’s sports efforts.” (link)
