The AAC has selected former Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti as its next commissioner, according to the AP’s Ralph Russo, who notes sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was still being finalized and no official announcement by the conference was scheduled yet. Several outlets previously reported the conference has zeroed in on Pernetti, who currently serves as the president of IMG Academy. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger broke the news yesterday evening. (link)

Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. tells the OU Daily that if the Norman City Council does not approve the proposed $1B entertainment district that would feature a new arena for OU athletics, then the university, alongside donors, would look to other cities to build an arena for which its basketball and women’s gymnastics teams would be anchor tenants and possibly the entertainment district as a whole. “I’m very hopeful and do everything I can to keep it here in Norman. But if this isn’t approved by the city council for whatever reason, then we’re going to be looking at other (cities), Oklahoma City, Moore, surrounding areas, and figure out where is there a group that wants to do this.” Harroz goes on to note that Norman has invested in OU in the past and needs to do so again. Harroz also says four variables must be solved in order to secure college sports’ long-term future: antitrust, complying with Title IX, settling the question of whether athletes are employees and ensuring that non-revenue-generating sports survive. “I think that a lot of people want to say, ‘Well, if you just fix NIL and the transfer portal, then your problems are solved.’ It's not. You’ve got to solve for all four of those. … Part of what we have to do is preserve college athletics and not just the revenue side, because the lifting of all women and supporting our Olympic teams is critical and it won’t happen with the market acting as the market.” (link)

Monday’s Iowa-LSU women’s basketball Elite 8 matchup brought in 12.3M viewers to ESPN to lead the way for the most-watched WBB Elite 8 on record. The game peaked at 16M. Meanwhile, Connecticut-USC averaged 6.7M viewers on ESPN and Oregon State-South Carolina averaged 3.1M and NC State-Texas averaged 2.5M on ABC. Overall, the games averaged 6.2M viewers, up 184% YoY. (link, link); The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch: “If you want some insane context, this viewership for Iowa-LSU number tops every World Series game in 2023 and all but one NBA Finals game in 2023. (link); SBJ’s Austin Karp adds the game also eclipsed the viewership numbers for the 10.4M who tuned in for the Purdue-Tennessee men's hoops Elite 8 matchup; the 9.5M viewers for the 2024 Golden Globes, and the 12.1M for the final round of the Masters last year. (link); ESPN also reports the WBB Sweet 16 was the most-watched on record, with Iowa-Colorado bringing in 6.9M viewers for ABC and LSU-UCLA bringing in 3.8M. On ESPN, Indiana-South Carolina drew 2.1M viewers while Duke-Connecticut brought in 2M. Overall, the Sweet 16 averaged 2.4M viewers, up 96% YoY. (link); More March Madness viewership numbers from CBS, which reports Sunday’s men’s tourney games averaged 12.8M viewers, a 30% YoY increase. The Purdue-Tennessee matchup peaked at 15.3M. (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen says the Tigers are “in a very, very positive place right now” in regards to the next apparel sponsorship. “I think our fanbase (and) everyone connected with Auburn is going to be very pleased with where we are. Just not ready to release because not all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. ... We got a lot of input from student-athletes, we got a lot of input from fans, we got a lot of input from our coaches and staff members. Everyone across all the stakeholders of Auburn University. We listened. ... At age 57, you realize that listening is a very valuable tool." (link)

The influence of shoe companies on men’s basketball appears to be waning, according to Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel, who wonders if the “confluence of NIL, the FBI and the transfer portal combine[d] to finally break the decades-long stronghold Nike and Adidas had on college basketball?” One “connected basketball middle man” tells him it’s “nothing like it was. The shoe companies have become second fiddle to NIL thinking.” One college coach adds: “Way less influence than pre-NIL.” However, Wetzel goes on to acknowledge the sample size so far is small, and “it would be foolish to say the ‘blue bloods’ will never win again or dominate again. They still have massive resources and fanbases. They can and will adapt. And maybe this is just a blip, programs from major conferences to mid-majors who never had much of a chance at Final Fours before suddenly do. Barriers have come down. This is no longer about collecting top-10 recruits and pretending they all came because they were impressed with the campus architecture.” Ironically, as coaches continue to decry NIL and the transfer portal as a vehicle for the rich to get richer, Wetzel contends it’s been the other way around. “Roster construction is undoubtedly more chaotic. More players are making more money. Change is constant. Yet, was it somehow better when a few shoe companies had their fingers on the scale? Wasn’t that the rich staying richer?” (link)

Fitzgerald is seeking more than $130M in damages, and a statement from his attorneys reads, in part: “Because the entire motion to dismiss was denied today, our plan is clear and straightforward – we are going to move this case forward and expeditiously to trial. … We will take all steps necessary to pursue Coach Fitzgerald’s serious claims and to protect his rights, name and reputation.” (link)

The initiative is being spearheaded by a $1M matching commitment from Glow Brands co-owner Rick Kueber, and as of Tuesday afternoon fans had contributed $382K. Kelsey: “We’re all aware that there was a seismic shift in our industry in the last few years with the advent of name, image and likeness. From the very beginning I was a huge proponent of it. … There’s no question in my mind. This is America, this is enterprise, this is capitalism. The young men and young women who participate at a high level of collegiate athletics deserve their share. It’s the absolute lifeblood of a program at a really high level that has national championship aspirations.” (link)

Alabama State becomes the first DI HBCU to add a women’s flag football team, which will begin competition in the 2024-25 academic year. Hornets AD Jason Cable: “We look forward to doing our part at The Alabama State University to assist in growing the sport locally and regionally. We can't wait to see the impact of women's flag football as one of our sports offerings for the Hornet Nation's student-athletes. We're enthusiastic that Alabama State University is breaking new ground by launching a highly competitive women's flag football program. The University recognizes the immense interest in women's flag football at the collegiate level and is proud to offer its students a valuable opportunity to excel in the sport.” President Quinton Ross adds: “Adding this program to our institution allows Alabama State University to align its sports offerings to the global standard and to the future of an emerging sport. The addition of women's flag football will provide both current and incoming students a valuable opportunity to further their education while participating on the gridiron." (link)

Daps has already worked with several student-athletes set to compete in this week’s men’s Final Four, including NC State’s DJ Burns, Purdue’s Zach Edey, Alabama’s Mark Sears and Connecticut’s Alex Karaban. Daps Co-Founder Jake Klores tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that “what we're building is the technology, the toolkit, to enable athletes to run their direct-to-fan businesses. We're in the middle of a really significant shift in fandom, where kids are growing up now, more so than ever, [as] superfans of individual athletes as opposed to teams. And because of that, sports commerce is evolving.” While Daps, which splits revenues 80/20 between the player and company, is similar in nature to Cameo, Portnoy notes one difference is in Daps’ focus on deliverables like autographed trading cards, game-worn items and experiences designed to engage fans more closely with their favorite athletes. So far, the company is focused on basketball, but Klores says there are plans to expand “into all different sports.” (link)

UMBC will hire a new AD as President Valerie Sheares Ashby says AD Brian Barrio is “no longer serving in the role.” Assoc. AD for Compliance/SWA Whitney Ames and Senior Assoc. AD for Business & Finance Rich Franchak will “take on temporary co-leadership of the department.” Sheares Ashby on leadership transitions at the university: “These transitions are significant, and they follow other changes in our senior leadership personnel and structure since I arrived at UMBC in August 2022. I understand some may worry that such transitions will be destabilizing for UMBC, and I know the impact of these transitions is in many cases felt personally, not just operationally or institutionally. I assure you that we will work to move UMBC as swiftly as possible through this period while attending thoughtfully to stability, continuity, and care for the community. Universities, many of them centuries old, have a remarkable capacity to endure and evolve through all manner of demands, challenges, and opportunities. UMBC may be younger than many of its peers, but it is no less remarkable in its ability to grow, adapt, renew, and rise to any challenge.” (link)

SEIU Local 560, the union representing Dartmouth’s men’s basketball players, has filed a 54-page response to the school’s request for a review of NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks’ original decision, and Sportico’s Michael McCann explains: “Under labor law, the standard of review is high: The board should only grant a request when there are ‘compelling reasons’ and either the regional director decided a substantial factual issue that is ‘clearly erroneous’ and such a mistake ‘prejudicially affects’ Dartmouth’s rights or a ‘substantial question of law or policy is raised’ because the regional director’s decision departs from NLRB precedent. Dartmouth, in other words, has to clear two bars to win at the NLRB. The school must convince the board to grant the request and then side with it. “ The board’s decision, McCann continues, will likely have a significant impact on how quickly the process plays out. If the request is granted, “many months will likely pass before the board rules on whether the players are employees.” If it isn’t, “the school would likely then immediately pursue federal court review—kicking off a timeline that could eventually land in the U.S. Supreme Court. A denial would accelerate the timeline by perhaps a year or more since it would remove the board’s review.” (link)

The MAC Council of Student-Athletes has drafted a white paper to submit to Congress that explains the council’s perspective and aspirations for the future of college athletics. The council indicates it rejects the idea of student-athlete employment for reasons including healthcare, academic support, workforce development, contract implications, tax obligations, inequitable resource distribution, the impact on international student-athletes, and the loss of opportunities for the next generation of high school athletes. From the letter: “Classifying student-athletes as employees would profoundly impact all aspects of the NCAA student-athlete experience. … We ask for federal action as the patchwork of state policy does not adequately protect the student-athlete experience. A national association requires federal policy to navigate the differences of state governments. We urge you to protect the best interest of the general student-athlete population and opportunity, as well as the American love of amateur athletics.” MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher: “The paper drafted by our student-athletes reflects their engagement and thoughtful consideration of this critical issue. It also highlights the vital role that student-athletes play in shaping the future of college athletics. Their commitment to advocating for their welfare and experience is commendable and serves as a testament to the importance of their voice in these discussions." (link, link)

Sunday’s NC State-Duke men’s basketball Elite 8 matchup brought in 15.4M viewers to CBS, making it the most-watched Elite 8 matchup since 2019, per SBJ’s Austin Karp, who also reports: “Heading into the men's Final Four, the NCAA Tournament across CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV is averaging 9.44M viewers,” up 4% YoY. (link, link); Meanwhile, Saturday’s Iowa-Colorado women’s basketball regional semifinal averaged 6.87M viewers on ABC, trailing only last year’s LSU-Iowa final (9.92M) as the most-watched women’s tournament game since 1995. Iowa-Colorado was the second-most watched sporting event of the day, topping Connecticut’s win over Illinois in the men’s Elite Eight on TBS and truTV (6.48M). The Alabama-Clemson men’s Elite Eight game was the most-watched with 7.79M viewers. According to Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis, the LSU-UCLA women’s matchup earlier in the day averaged 3.83M viewers, more than double South Carolina-UCLA on ESPN in the same window last year. UConn-Duke averaged 1.98M viewers and USC-Baylor averaged 1.7M on ESPN. Overall, Saturday’s regional semifinals averaged 3.57M viewers across ABC and ESPN, up 133% in viewership from last year’s 1.53M. The full Sweet 16 averaged 2.45M, up 96% YoY. South Carolina-Oregon State averaged 3.07M viewers on ABC in Sunday’s regional final, and NC State-Texas drew 2.47M. (link)

With at least 17 teams reportedly opting out of the NIT this year, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt tells Sportico’s Eric Jackson: “This is just a new reality in the short term for our business. In my position, you can’t overreact to things. We’re also not going to underreact. I’m not dismissive that there were more opt-outs than maybe we anticipated, but we did anticipate there would be some. … We look forward to breaking it all down after this year’s tournament and having active discussions with our conferences, coaches and ADs. We’ll continue to navigate how we best structure it going forward.” Gavitt goes on to acknowledge that “we still don’t have the answers to [how to keep the NIT relevant in a changing landscape]. We still don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with the Fox event. We still don’t know the real impact of opt-outs and transfer portal, but I’m more optimistic and bullish than not.” Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez believes that for “this next generation of events we’re going to start seeing will cover expenses or even offer financial incentives. With all the financial pressures to provide NIL, it’s really important to our schools.” Meanwhile, viewership was up 33% for this year’s quarterfinals on ESPN with two games topping 1M. From a viewership standpoint, Jackson reports NCAA leaders are “weighing whether it’s best financially to find a permanent home or strike annual deals with schools like it has done with UNLV and Butler.” (link)

The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil shines a light on the impact gambling is having on men’s basketball players on the end of the bench. For instance, Purdue student-athlete Carson Barrett, who tore his meniscus earlier this year, elected not to have surgery until after the season in hopes that he’d at least have a shot of getting on the court in his senior season. He’s played a total of 21 minutes and scored six points this season, including a baseline three against Grambling State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with the game well in-hand. After the game, Barrett was greeted with several messages on social media, including: “You sure are a son of a b—. Hope you enjoy selling cars for the rest of your life.” And: “I hope you f-ing die.” And: “Kill yourself for taking that 3 you f-ing worthless loser. Slit your f-ing throat you f-ing f– that was completely uncalled for. I hope you f-ing kill yourself.” All because Barrett’s three meant the Boilermakers covered the 27-point spread by winning 78-50. To a certain extent, high-profile players are more immunized to such messages. As Boilermakers star Zach Edey puts it: “People have been hating on me since my sophomore year. What do I care if Billy who put 30 bucks on the game is mad at me?” But for walk-ons or players who don’t often see the floor, the experiences can be daunting. Connecticut student-athlete Andrew Hurley, HC Dan Hurley’s son, says end-of-game experiences can be scary. “I’m in the locker room after we’ve broken it down and I’m like, ‘Oh man, I really hope nobody is jumping on me for something I did out there.’” More from O’Neil. + Kennesaw State extends its apparel partnership with Adidas through June 30, 2026. The deal includes all 18 KSU teams. Owls AD Milton Overton: "Over the years, Adidas has been a great partner for KSU and will join us into a new era as members of Conference USA this July. + The newly formed LSU economic development district, which will funnel tax revenues from businesses on and around the LSU campus to projects within the district – including a proposed $400M on-campus arena – will be overseen by a board of commissioners appointed by LSU’s president. The Advocate’s Lara Nicholson and Andrea Gallo note the setup precludes taxpayers from having a vote over how the money is used since no registered voters live within the district’s borders. Baton Rouge Councilwoman Shauna Banks: “Any time you’re dealing with taxes, but the person paying the tax doesn’t have the privilege of knowing the details — everything about it sounds like we’re going back to before there was law, constitution, fairness and equity. I’ve just never seen anything like it.” Attorney Charles Landry, who helped draft the legislation for the district and is now shepherding the arena project, insists there has been public input through meetings with the mayor and local organizations like the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. He also says the “whole project, starting from the ground up” will need approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors before it can move forward. LSU officials also maintain the arena would be privately financed and wouldn’t cost taxpayers any money. (link)
+ Private equity firm Silver Lake is acquiring Endeavor for $27.50 a share and an equity value of $13B. Through the purchase, Silver Lake will acquire 100% of the shares it did not already own, and Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel says: “We believe this transaction will maximize value for all of Endeavor’s public stockholders and are excited to continue to unlock and invest in the growth opportunities ahead as a private company.” TKO Group Holdings will remain public. From the press release: “Silver Lake believes that when consolidating all of TKO’s value into Endeavor, the combined total enterprise value of $25B will make this the largest private equity sponsor public-to-private investment transaction in over a decade, and the largest ever in the media and entertainment sector. On the unaffected date, the equity value was $8.2B, and the premium to be paid by Silver Lake represents $4.6B more equity value to all Endeavor stockholders.” (link, link)
